FEUD: Maria Anna of Austria & Mariana Victoria of Spain

- Maria Anna of Austria and Mariana Victoria of Bourbon were both queens of Portugal for best part of the 18th century. More than that, they were family, mother and daughter in law.
For a quarter of a century, they lived in the court of Lisbon in a proximity that went from love to hate in just a few years. Maria Anna of Austria controlled every aspect of her daughter in laws life, and Mariana Victoria resented her dippy for it.
But their relationship is much more complex than that, not only did they come from extremely different backgrounds, one was Austrian and the other one Spanish, their experiences in the Portuguese court were a clear contrast, just like their personalities.
But in the end, they had more in commune than they might have thought.
So, on this video, I am going to try to find out what was the relationship between these two women like and the causes for their feud.

Let me know what you think about the relationship between these two, I´m very curious!
This was super interesting! loved to know about their feud. Mariana seems to be a realy interesting character, a real human being with qualities and flaws, she has her own motivations but she is also influenced by others. Loved to see a movie about her 😊👑
It´s interesting to know the stuf that hapend behind closed doors. They look loke normal famalies
Loved Maria Anna, she sounds like a boss
On the relationship of these two it’s hard to say but Her mother in law didn’t sound too nice really. I guess over bearing.
Maria Anna was too difficult a personality I think. But I guess in those days they were stricter and firm but it sounds like maybe she didn’t like her daughter in law too much.
I love this channel a lot because you talk about people not many english-speaking channels make content about. Thank you so much, excellent work
Thank you very much
If you can't find this stuff on UA-cam you might have a mental problem
@@tysonclark5974 Well that was an unnecessarily unkind comment.
As a bit of a classical music buff I would like to point out that Maria Anna of Austria employed the great Italian composer and harpsichordist Domenico Scarlatti (considered to be the greatest keyboard player of the eighteenth century)as her children's music teacher -specifically he taught Barbara who later became queen of Spain.Scarlatti himself moved to Spain from Portugal and continued his musical activities there.
There is a French movie named ''the princess exchange''
Where Maria Victoria and a French princess exchange each others in the same way. If it is a true story it is pretty sad that the same little girl lived the same thing twice...
That movie was so beautiful, so many scene looked like painting in it.
Very interesting, thank you. People tend to think ‘they’re royal, they’re rich, they have such good lives’ but they obviously don’t , do they. Poor little daughters , sent away at such young ages to foreign lands, probably to,never see their parents again. 👵👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Totally agree
So agree ,
Still better than the lives of the poor back then. Better to be sent away at 11 than dead in the streets at 5. Even if you lived to adulthood (50% of people did not) most poor people's parents died while they were still children.
I really appreciate your channel. My French isn’t, Spanish isn’t great, and my Hungarian is nearly non-existent. Your channel fills so many fun gaps that are tough to parse out in English. One historian to another, you’re wonderful!
Thank you very much!
I'm Finding Your Channel On Spanish And Portuguese Royalty FASCINATING!!! 👑👑🇪🇸🇵🇹
I loved the "Queen Nun" part....i almost spit out my drink!
Mistress Nun
@@teachasse6114 yeah, but he said she lived like a queen....i just found it hilarious to visualize a Queen nun.
@@veronicaguyader9997 Even funnier to visualize a Mistress Nun
@@teachasse6114 sorry, i think we aren't understanding one another. I am laughing at Queen Nun bc she got called that bc she was his mistress. I guess i am not explainin myself right bc the mistress part is implied in the moment when i almost spit my drink out that her importance as his mistress made her much looking like a Queen...nun.
The Austrian was obsessed with religion omg poor Bourbon princess, her family was more into funny and artistic activities than church like the Habsburgs did, your videos are amazing, i find a lot of facts that I didn't know about before, greetings
I´m glad you like the channel, cheers!
She was very beautiful, poor little princesses....pawns of power.
First to comment! Super interesting story. Funny to discover the etiquette in the time of José was strict, I had an image of the Bragança court and family as a very... sloppy - that's how things seemed to be under Mariana's grandson's regency and reign as king João IV.
Thank you!
The Bragança family already had a solid court ceremonial, even before becoming a royal house. When they where just dukes living in Vila Viçosa, etiquet was already present as a social mechanism.
On the other side, the court of Lisbon was a litle disorganized, especially in terms of hierarchy. On the day Maria Anna arrived in Lisbon for the first time, her new portuguese ladies where on "strike" because of precedences.
"She dramatized everything"....... NOOOO!!!!! a girl, especially a young girl, would never do that!!!!! I refuse to believe she was a whiny and entitled brat...lol
I’ll have to read some more about her. I’ve always been fascinated reading about kings and queens since I was in my teens
Super interesting theme.I had already read that Mariana Vitória and her Mother in law weren't on the bestof terms but I didn't know all the details. One of my favourite Queens of Portugal. She had to go through rather difficult Times especially the 1755 earthhquake, the execution of The Távoras and the enormous influence of Pombal Over the King her husband which she resented.
I'm glad you liked it!
The ironic thing about Mariana and the marquis de Pombal was that in one of her letters, when she was still a princess, she said that her husband was not prone to be influenced by others... little did she know.
in other words, it sounds like our dear little princess was slightly spoiled.
The classic case of daughter in law vs in laws family
This is the best video about this two queen, your job is amazing!!
Tkank you :)
I stumbled on your channel and I've been binging
You're doing an amazing job and you have a new subscriber 😊
Thank you 😀
Excellent work! Thank you for this update
Really liked this video, keep up the great work!!
Thank you😁
I really enjoy your videos because you include not many heard of kings and queens. I love all the different pictures too. It’s like watching a movie. I liked the Marie Antoinette one . Are you going to continue to use lots of pictures in your upcoming videos? I was wondering what you meant when you said changing the format
Thank you. I will continue to do videos with the images, dont worry :) I did the Marie Antoinette one because I wanted to try doing something freestyle. I liked the technical side of it but i didn't ́t think it was good enough, so I deleted it.
Great story. I truly enjoyed this very much.
I am so enjoying your videos they are so informative
a channel that can actually pronounce names in english, french, portuguese and spanish..
Very true, although surprisingly his Italian was a bit wonky (i.e. 'Farnese') (o;
This was a very interesting story! Keep it up, and greetings from Brazil!
OMG!! This channel is magnificent!! Keep it up!! 👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Ruined reputation of a SIX year old!!!
Great video!😉
Another wonderful video. It’s interesting to hear her story . I hadn’t heard of her before. Beautiful pictures too
i'm glad you liked it :)
I just subscribed right now, bravo on an enjoyable presentation.
Thank you and welcome!
Fantastically interesting, so glad l subscribed. I often wonder how history will be discovered in the future without letters as correspondence. ✉
It was great to know about the relationship between these two.
Very interesting 🧐 thanks 🙏🏻
They stole her babies ! No wonder she was in a distressed state and deppression. No wonder at all.
I love the history you give us about Marianna victoria and her mother-in-law. But can we know where did you found the letters of the young princess?????
The letters were published in 1936 (Cartas de Rainha D. Mariana Victória para a sua Família de Espanha e que se Encontram nos Arquivos Históricos de Madrid e Geral de Simancas, apresentadas e anotadas por Cetano Beirão, vol. 1 (1721-1748), Lisboa, Empresa Nacional de Publicidade, 1936.). I got access to excerpts of them in the recent biography of the Queen by the historian Paulo Drumond Braga, that source and others used in the making of the video are listed in the description.
Have to take my beloathed colonizers side on this one. The Rainha didn't want the wedding to be consumated because she didn't want the spoiled Princess of Brazil (lmao) to die giving birth as a child.
could you make the following themes on videos: the relationship between João v and madre paula, the abdication of afonso vi and the baker of Aljubarrota?
8:10 so cute! i can't
Me encanta la historia del periodo Renaissance. Especialmente de la realeza. Lo encuentro todo fasinante. Mi favorita reina creo que es Maria Carolina.
She looks so pretty ❤
Please! Let us know how Mariana’s story follows, we so interested in her story
How old was she when she had her first child??
She was 16 years old.
... The princess carry almost the same name as me... Sounds awkward listening to her story while always mishearing my name repeated a lot... As if I am the one being talked about...
But what happened after?!?! Don’t leave us hanging!!!!!!!!! 😫
And five years after Mariana Victória became queen of Portugal Lisbon was destroid destroyed by a massive earthquake.

## 18 THE SANTORE ##
Wait….Maria Anna vs Mariana Victoria. Oh my god that’s so funny to me.
Why do all old princesses look exactly the same ?
Well, in part is because they wear similar fashions, and also partly because all the royal families were related in some degree.
The homogeneous fashions (especially the wigs) and pale skin tone/makeup definitely contribute to similarity, and keep in mind that the royal portrait-painters presented idealised versions of the sitters so we're not really seeing them as they truly were, "warts and all".
