- Thought most of History Royal Weddings had nothing to do with love. Marital alliances were forged and broken based solely on the political needs of the various ruling dynasties.
The men and women born in this families were raised to married whomever their family decided in order to ensure its survival and prosperity. If love ever became a reality between these couples, it as a happy and rare consequence of marriage, not the reason for it.
On the contrary, in his treatise, O Leal Conselheiro, written around 1438, King Edward of Portugal warned married couples to the dangers of love and passion, advising theme instead to pursue marital friendship based on mutual respect and support.
Thought the 16th century the ruling houses of Iberia, the Habsburgs on the Spanish side and the Avis on the Portuguese one, successively married each other generation after generation. These alliances secure the power and continuation of both dynasties, creating complex ties of familiar and political interdependency.
To understand the origins of the marriage alliances between the Aviz and the Habsburgs during the Renaissance is necessary to go back in time, to the so-called age of the Reconquest, the moment the seeds of the Iberian Cristian kingdoms were planted.

This period of the Portuguese history is so interesting and intriguing at the same time. D.Sebastião is certainly part of this mistery. A kingdom without a king and a suitable heir. Another great theme for a film.

Já estava mais do que na hora de tirarem esse crédito deles! Porque eles só continuaram uma política que já acontecia há anos, só subiram um pouco o nível. E mesmo com a extinção dos Habsburgo, os Bourbon Espanhóis continuaram com a mesma política, expandindo para os Bourbon Italianos.

great video i love it! im going to have to watch it a few times to get to know whos who in all the hapsburg family. i know most but not all. its mind boggling because they all married within the family im always working out how so and so is related it can be confusing, its funny i sometimes sit here with pen and paper writing it down . ha ha. its neet ive always been fascinated with their family. i wanted to ask also were maximillion and mary of burgundy related were they maybe cousins and were philip and juanna the mad related? i ask because i wanted to know if the in breeding started with them, or who it started with. you probably cover it in this video im going to watch a few times.
I am glad you liked the video :) I agree, the habsburg family tree is a tough one. Maximilian and Mary of Burgundy were related. They both had common ancestors, but their families weren't particularly close (at least directly). Closer to their life lifetime they both dsecended from John I of Portugal, Maximilian from his mother, Leonor of Portugal (John´s granddaughter) and Mary from her grandmother, Isabel of Portugal (John´s daughter). Isabel was Leonor´s aunt.

I still think that for normal people anglo-centric history of 16th century is dominant, and your work can bring some change to that ☺️
And I know that the views on your channel might not give you so much motivation to keep uploading, but trust me with time people will apreciate your channel more and more. Above all other things...this work will not influence profesjonal historians but general audience...and I just think that is far more important than any univeristy work that is recicved only by few for the few. During Salazar dictatorship in Portugal they ignored Queen Maria II descendants , jumped one generation and gave the title of Duke of Braganza to a descendant of her father's brother but the truth is that Karl von Habsburg , his son Ferdinand and his daughter Eleonore are the most direct descendants of the a Portuguese Monarch are descendants of Both Miguel I and Peter IV, Queen Maria II father.

That was a fascinating account of the incestuous intermarriages between the royal families of Portugal and Spain. I live in Portugal now and it’s enjoyable to get to know his history. All I can say is that they sacrificed a lot of their children for political ambition.
