Halo has a very strange history with boss fights, they've been some of the highest highs and lowest lows of the franchise, and with it looking like they're set to return in Halo Infinite, I thought today we'd dive into this strange history and analyse which Halo boss fights worked, which didn't, and some inspiration Halo Infinite should take for its boss fights!

Silent Shadow boss fight in Halo Infinite pls...? 👉😳👈
Yes
Nah you want to find them around the map like bounty hunters hunting you down and every base or fortress you attack more come after you and it forces you to hunt them down or fight all of them at once
HiddenXperia I was here first
Most likely. Jega R'dommnai(correct me if I spelled it wrong) is in the game and then there's of course Okro Vagaduun.
That would be awesome. Like imagine just a bunch of the silent shadows just running at you surrounding you. And then the leader of them fights you with only swords, a energy sword duel.
I love that you can bring a Banshee in to fight Tartarus. Stuff like that is what makes Halo special.
I mean, it's just a simple exploit. Games do have them
Oh yeah, and a Spectre too. Even though it's a glitch I probably should've mentioned it, it adds even more replay value to the fight
Trying a wraith can be really weird
@@HiddenXperia Haha I honestly didn’t know that! Time to look up the tutorial
Agreed john agreed
I'll never get over how traumatized I am from trying to beat the Prophet of Regret on Legendary. Unlimited honor guards that would just melt you instantly. If there was just one that you missed that was left when you dismounted Regret, you were insta-dead and had to start that whole fight over.
*Shudders*
I understand why they didn't, but damn. It would've been really interesting to see a time limit on the Tartarus boss fight. (Though, that probably would've been an even further bitch on Legendary. LMAO)
I loved punching Regret a couple times and then dismounting him and falling into a mosh pit of honor guards that kill me before I even have time to aim.
@@swanqlord3048 RIGHT??? LITERALLY. THE WORST.
@@EluTran I passed it first try on legendary when I did it on solo recently. The honour guards aren’t actually that much of a threat. I didn’t kill a single one and just kept running around back up to the top section and then constantly jumping on Regret each time he appeared back in the level.
That entire section is absolutely awful on legendary, the Elite Honour Guards have Linda-tier aim with their PRs
@@HiddenXperia really? Maybe I got lucky then. I’d have to replay it another time. It’s definitely harder on co-op but I swear it’s not that difficult if you just avoid them. I was close to dying a few times but never actually died by the dual PR elites.
my god, i never knew a beam rifle would break tartarus' shields...
It was so badly designed. There was no way to know beam rifles were uniquely powerful since they aren't available in that part of the mission and they were never shown to be uniquely effective against shields.
Between that and the elites mindlessly throwing themselves at Tartarus the immersion is broken.
It's been forever but I remember fighting him for a frustratingly long time.
Actually when l discovered that back in the day was because l asked myself: "if l bring my own rifle, can l take off his shield like johnson?" Since Ai had infinite ammo l never though johnson's rifle was actually a different wep, l was like 12 at that time
Yeah when I played it as a kid and for years after I never found out and was just running away till I spotted Tartarus without the shields then shot him.
I mean. I don't wanna be that guy, but Johnson does shoot his sheilds with one m8 coulda connected the dots. But ah well.
“Punching an old man in a wheelchair” is probably my favorite way to describe the prophet of regret boss fight on normal and easy lol
I appreciated it for being needlessly brutal in that regard.
The prophets, for all their political and religious sway, are largely helpless old men in hover chairs; they can take a beating, but they aren't fighters. You just hop on and full on beat the twisted bastard to death - as a "fight" its lackluster, but as an execution it's brutal.
@@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger once you know just how messed up the prophets are from the expanded lore then it definitely feels pretty good beating him up
@kryuzaki9862 Honestly the first time I played Halo 2 and I saw you had beat up what was essentially an old man I was laughing my ass off.
Was it a superb boss fight? No, but at least it was funny as hell.
Maybe they could have made his hovercraft become a mini scarab or attach to a hunter or something else would have been leagues better.
CE: blowing up a ship
H2: An elite with stronger shields, an old guy that you had to punch and a brute you had to either wait or take out his invincibility to kill him.
H3: The scarabs which were sandbox puzzles and guilty spark
H4: A quick time even with a forerunner
H5: A robot who you had to fight 7 times with the only change being you had to fight three of him.
I always thought the lich in 4 was a boss fight because they throw 4 wraiths at you on the ground
It’s very sad how little it’s there for 343 to learn how to make good bossfights in Halo, Bungie best efforts weren’t great and what 343 tried in H5 was even worse, Hard to be optimistic about HI there 😓
@@wolfdragox5563 I thought the halo 5 boss was fun the first time then after he was was overused. Should have just used him twice. The first time and once more where you fight 3.
@@slayking2378 I agree, H5 it’s the absolute definition of “great ideas, poor execution”
Reach had the Elite Field Marshal at the end before Six uses the MAC Gun.
I wouldnt really consider Guilty Spark a boss battle, personally. He's more of an "Interactive story moment." Making him into a mechanically complex boss battle would distract a bit from the story moment of blowing him to kingdom come. Same with the Didact
Agreed.
Definitely agree for the most part, although I figured it was still worth mentioning. The same could be said for Regret too, although maybe less so
Agreed craig agrees Also
I agree. Idk if bullet(or laser) sponge moments really count as boss battles.
In my opinion, a boss battle should be something with a unique combat mechanic that forces the player to engage the enemy in a way that they'd otherwise not be compelled to. Attack timing, weak points, phases, etc. I'd say the scarabs and even perhaps the hunters are Halo's most memorable boss battle.
All in all, I love Halo but the 'boss battles' have always been pretty weak.
@@HiddenXperia agreed
I also just realized you missed a boss fight too! There is the one at the end of Halo Reach with the Field Marshall right after his Zealot squad kills Emile. I always count it in my head and i have a theory that the Field Marshall at the end of Halo Reach is actually the same one you see in the beginning of the game as well as the one that killed Kat with the needle rifle. Field Marshalls are very high ranking elites and it would make sense that there wouldnt be a great number of them. Its kindda a subtle thing but i think worth mentioning!
I'd say its more of a mini boss
@@Voltboy1449 No, it was the final boss, the Field Marshall himself was the final boss.
Ardo 'Moretumee was the first boss fight of the game.
I feel like warden would have been more fun if he had some more variety, such as different forms or combat styles.
Bungie literally Regretted the regret boss fight xD. Fits in nicely
HOORAH!
@@Windjammer19 "Regret is a name, Sergeant."
Everything Regret does ends in regret.
The only change is who is regretting it.
Honestly the scarab fights in Halo 3 felt more like boss battles to me. Then Halo 2's Tartarus being second
Edit: Holy shit, i forgot the Warden Eternal was a thing lmao
LOL I don't blame you for forgetting, I wish I could forget too
The elite you have to assassinate in Halo Reach on the mission 'Pillar of Autumn' to get the 'Mister Chief' appearance for the Mariner helmet was a boss fight in itself, hands down.
I'm surprised you forgot about warden haha, considering how much he appears in 5
I hated the didact because I didn't read the books, but why would I need to read a book, (I have ADHD, and cannot read more than five minutes) albeit halo is interesting, I just dont get why I had to do 4 hours of research just to figure out who the hell this guy was and why the chief did the things he did, should be part of the game. Also made me dislike halo more so on the side of I don't know what the hell is going on and the community is not helping me by saying, "just read the books" . I just wanted more substance for killing the didact, not because he doing something blatantly obvious like killing people
@@jacentv plus he was just an ass, I couldn't finish my halo 5 legendary playthrough because I just recently got downed by the warden right? Then I ask for Tanakas help (God help us) she comes and revives me thankfully, but not even right after, the warden shoots me with an explosive, launched me off the WHOLE MAP, and I have to fight him again, I have this very clip btw lol, plus the stupid part about halo 5s weapons in multiplayer were also apart of campaign, that was a curveball
I’ve lost the footage sadly, but one time while doing a legendary run on Halo 3, we’ve had the Scarab on The Ark just walk away from the fight over the hill, and just leave us. The game won’t progress until after the Scarab was defeated, and softlocked us. Probably one of our funniest Halo moments that come to memory
Scarab really just went "ight ima head out"
Did you try to glitch out of the level and kill it?
@@ShadowDragon-cw7wb nah, we just reverted to last checkpoint
I can just imagine the Covenant inside the scarab seeing the Chief coming and saying " Nah. Fuck this" 😂
Shoutout to Reach’s Field Marshall for... existing, I guess.
Bosses in Halo werent made for gameplay, they were made for the memes.
Bosses work better for Destiny anyways. Halo is too...whats the word? Story-focused.

I wonder what would happen to the arbiter if he became a heretic that early
Master Chief taking 4 punches to kill an elderly man who's spent his whole life in low gravity will never not be funny.
Well this a surprising idea for a video.

I feel that this aged well; we can see how a game with such a weak history of boss fights managed to make quite successful and prominent boss fights in Halo Infinite.
Pretty bold move by 343, and it’s success really was necessary for Halo Infinite’s success.
I kinda liked the grunt mech in halo 5…
@@iamMildlyUpsetWithMostOfYouTub Yeah That guy was cool as heck lol
I generally agree with your points. I think it's worth mentioning Hunters too, since I always felt they were essentially mini-bosses within missions. I thought the Warden was fine as a bossfight (bad damage feedback is a good point), but the repetitiveness of him killed the fun. For me, the Scarab stands as the peak of Halo boss fights, because Halo is at its best a sandbox game, and the Scarab is essentially a sandbox-focused bossfight.
I’ve played through halo 2 several times over the years and didn’t know using a beam rifle yourself on him did anything special, fml
I was hoping I wasn't the only one 😂
It’s my favorite pastime, punching old men in wheelchairs
I have no idea why it never even crossed my mind
Everybody gangsta, until you hear boss music.
Every FromSoft game in a nutshell
@@HiddenXperia please don't remind me
"Halo is at its best when it's at the behest of the sandbox, not when the player IS the sandbox." This is perfect.
Hopefully 343 understands that in Infinite.
I love the scarabs. An actual AI that moves on its own with enemies on it.
I loved hitting an old man on his wheel chair in Halo 2 🤜
Yo naww 💀🤣
Man, I’m loving this new intro!
Yeah, it’s pretty awesome
Yeah it's like arbiters voice actor for Halo 2. Amazing
I've had it for like 6 months and I'm still in love with it, IT'S SO GOOD
The best Halo boss battles were the road trips we shared (or didn't share R.I.P. Foehammer) along the way
The Didact has this cool force power right?
So, if he had a “traditional” boss fight, I’d love it if he used it to throw structures and vehicles at you, as if you were trying to fight against your friend chasing you down with a Grid in forge!
Cloud even use it to show how much his hatred of humanity has consumed him, ripping apart his own ship just to get back at them.
If only.
Like xemnas, but less cool
I like how he went from talking about Halo bosses to MGS to Dark Souls.
"What if you miss?"
"I won't"
Hiddenxperia: *Doubt*
8:57 Minor correction for this part. In Halo 3 ODST you fight a scarab in the underground metro. You can choose to bypass it or destroy it.
The Wheatley boss fight from Portal 2 is my favorite. When you look up at the moon that feeling of “no way is this what I need to do” right before you fire the portal gun is so incredible.
Let’s hope Okra Vagaduun has an interesting boss fight. Maybe in the final stage, having to use an energy sword to finish him off.
I really hope so, his character introduction in Sacrifices was so cool, it'd be a shame if his boss fight was lame
@@HiddenXperia
Definitely, a lot of potential with his character and Jega ‘Rdomnai in Infinite.
Imagine a boss fight against a gravemind in halo: infinite
that would be pretty sweet
In halo 3, you would’ve actually been able to fight the gravemind in high charity, but it was cut. The way you would fight it was through a scareb, though how it would work idk
@@yapyapthedestroyer2562 Cortana would've piloted the scarab (probably a Halo 2 variant) and the gravemind would use its tentacles to attack. I think it was scrapped due to animation issues
@@replicarev6heavypoweredarm702 oh, didn’t know that it could’ve been a halo 2 scareb. Still this battle if they were able to make it would’ve been awesome, since we get to fight the gravemind in a scareb, especially since we barely saw the gravemind in halo 3, only it’s tentacles
I can imagine it would follow a resident evil formula
"You had to beat an old man on a wheel chair."
You can also take out The End when he's getting wheeled away after that cutscene
I see why it took me 2 1/1 hrs to complete the last mission on halo 2 legendary, i didnt know you could shoot him with a beam rife and it counts too, i just waited and died a lot :(
You could also get 4 Johnsons and have them snipe him to death
@@Espartanica didn't know about them being able to be multiplied ;-; i waited for 1 johnson to hit him 3 times and died a lot to the brutes that spawn out of nowhere

In Reach, I always treat the Field Marshall (the only one in the game) who killed Emile as an honourable boss fight. Just feels right to end the game taking him head on. Plus he even sort of has a second phase by switching from his fuel rod to energy sword when his shield is low, the only enemy in the game that does this I think.
They could have done some cool things with assassinations in reach, imagine destroying a bosses armor and shields as it changes up its attacks until it is open up for a finishing assassination with a custom animation.
Knowing how good some of the boss fights in destiny are, really goes to show how far Bungie has come in the sense of bosses
I really want to fight Escharum in an arena. I loved it when on halo 3s level the ark has you fight a brute with a gravity hammer while the rest of his team cheers on their captain while he fights you. I hope to see some sort of forerunner arena pop up in the world that the banished brutes are using as a fighting and hunting spot (seeing as they will normally pit different species to fight to the death) and Escharum is in the arena and is fighting other brutes when you walk in, he looks at you and is like "finally the day has come, fight me!" as all of the other brutes and jackals and grunts gather around the arena and cheer for Escharum. then the halo theme plays as Escharum pulls out the blades on his shoulders and you starts to fight him. once you have killed him you can take the two blades that he had and kill the rest of the brutes, jackals, and grunts and keep the blades as a trophy or weapon to keep on you.
CE and 2 felt like they were in development and someone said “wait wait guys don’t we have to make a boss fight? Isn’t that was video games do?” And nobody really knew why they did it
Even after The Didact fell not even that killed him and he was actually killed by Chief in a DAMN BOOK
specifically a comic book and he wasn't killed, only composed. Which leaves the option of a promethean Didact open.
@@blake3631 still they shouldn’t have done that also I’m surprised the pulse grenade didn’t disintegrate him

What my brother and I used to do to defeat the scarabs was one of us would drive a falcon and the other would be a passenger, once the driver got close enough the passenger would jump off and land on the scarab. Whilst the person was in the scarab the driver would shoot the covenant. Once the scarab was starting to blow up the driver would swoop down and pitch up the other person as they jump off the scarab like a epic escape scene.

ah yes beating an old man on his wheel chair . One of halo's memorable boss fights, strange it'n it
Coming back to this video after finishing Infinite on legendary, Yep they definitely nailed the boss fights.
Personally, when it comes to boss fights, and especially those in the Souls series, one of my favorites and one I consider to be a perfect combination of themes and gameplay is the Soul of Cinder. Thematically, it's the culmination of every soul who kindled the flames before you from Gwyn to the former player characters from the other games. You can see it in the gameplay as well in the way the Soul of Cinder switches between all the different playstyles the player is able to choose and the way the music weaves in Gwyn's them in the second phase... Mwah. Chef's kiss. Keep up the awesome videos man.
This aged poorly 😂
Looking back at this now that infinite is out is awesome. They did a darn good job this time around
Senator Armstrong in MGRR was a great boss fight memory I have.
They established he was hard to hurt right away, and then towards the end those little moments we saw him get hurt made the whole room I was in cheer.
Even more amazing which adds on to gail is his backstory is how he's an undead like you who went through soo much to get the blood for the painting he becomes huge cause of the amount of souls he's accumulated and the sword he's using is a broken and rusted version of the sword he once had and when you encounter him its at the end of the world but you sorta get a shortcut there while he literally went through it all. He's like that character you have at ng+ 100 with all stats insanely high where even a broken straight sword is op. So amazing
Very well said, couldn't agree more on Halo 3 scarab battles. The feeling of "you have an obstacle before you that you must eliminate and you can do it in many ways" is incredibly satisfactory and still, to this day, is the most important element of Halo games for me.
My favorite boss fight is Mr. Freeze from Batman Arkham City, the way he adapts to your play style is so interesting.
8:49 except for when the scarab legs clip into the ground, start freaking out, and begin relentlessly killing everything
That intro was amazing!
Riding that chopper onto the scarab was clean as hell
I think the general on the covenant bridge in the halo reach long night of solace legendary should count as a boss
For bosses, my favorite has to be Vergil from Devil May Cry, more so the battles from 3. You have this clearly defined sense of character progression on Dante to the point that you feel OP, bu then comes Vergil and still makes you wish you could be using him instead. I'm not going to go deeper into the character but, just know that beating Vergil 3 also gives you a GREAT feeling of accomplishment.
this is the first timd im seeing this one but i love how he keeps updating the intro
