  • Inside Taiwan's Biggest Men Prison | Taichung, Taiwan | Free Doc Bites
    The Taichung Men´s Prison is the biggest and toughest prison in Taiwan. It houses four and a half thousand inmates. Among them are some of the most dangerous criminals in the whole country. Over a hundred life sentences alone and more than a thousand prisoners are serving sentences of twenty years or more.
    Monotony, confinement and around the clock video surveillance everywhere dictate the lives of the inmates. Only one time a week the inmates are allowed to spend time on the yard.
    The prison works with what is known as progressive correctional treatment. This means that prisoners are divided into four levels. The better a prisoner behaves, the higher their level. And this determines, for example, how many packs of cigarettes a prisoner can buy and how often he is allowed to have visitors. The most important thing, however, is that the length of imprisonment is reduced with each level obtained. For most prisoners, this is a good reason to cause as little trouble as possible.

    This is how most prisons should be for less violent crimes. Even though it's a form of slave labor but at least you can get sentence reduce, contribute to society, and some benefits for good behavior. These are smugglers which are very crafty people so I get why the surveillance 24/7.

      Nope. Just a straw mat. No pillow or blanket. I saw that Singapore prison video. It was pretty hard to watch. I felt claustrophobic just watching it. They were surprisingly well behaved though. I think I would lose my mind within the first week. I don’t know how they are able to keep their cool. I don’t think they were even convicted of violent crimes. It’s crazy to me but seems like maybe a cultural thing. In my country that is unheard of. You need to have done something really bad to get so much isolation. Even then they still get a bed and a tv at least

      I think they may put you in solitary confinement too. It may depend on the crime. More space in a Taiwanese cell but you must share it with other people. It seems the Singapore experience is much harder when you factor in the bed issue like no real mattress. I think 2 blankets and no pillow. Maybe no fan or air conditioning?? They give you very little to work with too -- minimal things.

    • @porkcutlet3920
      @porkcutlet3920 9 місяців тому

      @@haydenwilliamson6747 If you're talking about the CNA video, they were convicted for violent crimes. Solitary cells are much better for them. They can sleep better knowing they won't get stabbed in their sleep. I don't think not having beds is that big of a problem. Honestly, the biggest problem is they don't have access to fans in their cells. Singapore is near the equator and it's hot and humid throughout the year.

This small island country the people have a ❤ of gold and this is also i observe as i work here in 5 years i really love taiwan the people is very kind, approchable and one thing very diciplined honest. Sometimes i wonder how far the philippines in order or about attitude because in my country they will not respect you if you are belong to a poor family such i experienced where ever i go..thats why i work very hard to earned more more money to provide my family it hurts to watch any of your family member to harras anybody because of your poor livelihood.

    I don't know anything about US prisons but it's clear Taiwanese prisons are superior to Colombian prisons. Staying busy - having something constructive to do even if it's repetitive - is gold!
    Hanging around in a crowded and uncomfortable concrete yard with absolutely nothing to do all day, day after day, is a recipe for disaster. Ultimately the inmates will create something to do - like fights, extortion, drugs, self-mutilation, suicide, etc.
