Generally speaking, Taiwan is a very safe place, ranks right up there as among the safest. But of course, criminals are everywhere. But I wonder if it’s a particular stigma, a stain of dishonor in a country that’s known for its good record? Is rehabilitation a priority? Well, this prison certainly has a certain points system to deal with the prisoners on the inside. Enjoy peeps.
Yes but remember they don't have the same over-population of criminals as they do in let's say America - good systems cost money - tax-money, and there are other things as well to pay with taxes, that is more important than criminals, such as hosptals....police....water....power....farms....infrastructure....and so on - criminals harm the economy they don't contribute to it so why should they expect to get any help if all they do is harm other people and society...? They shouldn't
Compared to the city jails in the Philippines, Taiwan prison system is a luxury place and highly modernized. I can see it very clean and prisoners are well mannered.
The Philippines was bad but I still think Madagascar was the worst. One meal a day of some type of root . No nutritional value and prisoners die of malnutrition. Men sleep sandwiched together on the floor and can’t even turn over unless they all do together! I know prison isn’t supposed to be nice but Madagascar is inhumane.
It’s amazing to see the success of prison systems focused on rehabilitation and helping inmates regain a footing in society versus punishment and humiliation. It shows that there’s a chance for people to make amends in some way and become better people.
I remember teaching English in Taiwan. I was assigned to a rather “tough” school; those where kids come from lower income families. The kids are tamed compared to inner-city schools in the States. The kids in Taiwan acted tough and they were tough but I always envisioned putting them in an inner city school in the States. It would for sure scare them straight.
Even if they were fluent in English, they likely wouldn't even make it through the metal detectors without incident in truly rough places, like Detroit or Baltimore school districts.

This is my hometown, where I live right now. We Taiwanese have no chance to know what is inside the Taichung prison. Thank you for this documentary to explore what the local residents are unable to know about.
I love Taiwan. I've also noticed that the Police in Taiwan are very nice and friendly. They treat everyone with respect. I wish my country had more just like them.
For a prison, it appears to be relatively safe, with professionally courteous interaction between the inmates and their keepers, and without the over-the-top regimentation seen in places like Fuchu prison in Japan.
Its worth noting that one of the reasons prison guards dont carry firearms is because most of the Taiwanese men had mandatory military training/conscription and carrying a gun isn't a great idea with all these tight hallways and cramped spaces.
So clean! After watching the Madagascar episode I was in tears and had nightmares. I’m glad some places keep areas clean to protect the prisoners health and consequently, everybody else in the building.
Its also interesting that the officers inside call the prisoners “classmates”, as in they are in prison to learn and I suppose its a lees derogatory term for them
@@謝政霖-i4l Prisons and schools often resemble one another. This is true in many countries, but it is definitely the case in Taiwan. The design of the facility, the structure of how things work, and routines are all similar to what you can see in schools.
This is what general prisons should be like everywhere. A focus on rehabilitation, life skills, and incentives towards good behavior while still being strict, secure, and thorough.
This is a nice change from the usual horrific prisons we see. It's clean, they have at least 4 dishes to pair with their rice, no one has to lie side by side to each other and almost everybody can buy toilettries because they have jobs. I bet some of them don't want to leave.
i think this is why there are some people who are good at being inmates but not so much being a free person -- the lack of a structured life outside of prison (i.e. the freedom to do anything you want) causes the person to not integrate well and sooner or later they're back in prison, even if they're well-mannered inside.
Il be honest, these videos make me happy to be a Swede, I know that even if I do commit a crime, I do not have to literally SUFFER for the rest of my life, even though I know our two neighbor countries Norway and Finland do it even better
I'm a Swede here in America and they seem to want people to suffer here as part of what is supposed to scare you from wanting to go there or come back (jail or prison) very unpleasant places to be here
Prisons should be made to rehabilitate people and let them know are still welcome and loved in the community. Not torture them like an animal. If you should copy any country, It’s definitely in Europe, or The Nordics
I know. Well, some systems believe in treating people - even the ones who commit crimes - as humans. I like that and believe it's the only way to rehabilitate. Won't always work but it is the only way rehabilitation CAN work.
All I can say is at least the guards pick their stuff up after searching it, in America they'll destroy your cell and walk away and expect you to clean up, regardless if there's a camera in the room or not
It was a bit "nostalgic" to see "Darlie" toothpaste (at 24:10). I've been in Taiwan a couple times, and also visit Asian markets in the US. Back in 1981 during my first trip, I saw "Darkie" toothpaste, and the picture was of a Black man with a wide grin and wearing a top hat. I laughed when I saw it, but the people in Taiwan didn't quite understand why I thought it was funny, so I tried to get them to realize that such a item would be seen as supportive of racial stereotypes. The name was eventually changed to "Darlie" with the man's appearance changed. I bought a tube of Darkie toothpaste back to the US, and when I showed it to a physician, he laughed but then mentioned that of the three main racial groups, the east Asians tend to have the worst dentition while the Black people tend to have the best, so the "marketing message" may be that if a person in Taiwan uses this toothpaste, then this may result in having excellent dentition--like that of a Black person.
Honestly I think Asians by nature are not violent and crazy like Americans. The proof is there are no mass shooting, serial killers are almost non existent.

This place is beautiful and definitely fits some of the criteria I wish more prisons had. Well organized. It makes more sense when prisons operate more like inpatient hospitals or schools (Singapore and other prisons, too.) Every countries culture, method and way of executing it are different, but you can tell when they're trying. I'm such a big fan of prison reform
It’s so tolerant. Look at China😢 When a criminal commits a crime, his parents, friends, and children will also be punished, even if they didn’t commit a crime.Relying on this method to threaten criminals
Structure is key to be successful in Life. You have to have it in all aspects or…you fall for another’s ideals easily. I applaud systems that invoke such practices! Thanks🌸
This almost looks better than living free in America! Regular work, good free food. Structure. Western food. Clean environment. Efficient. It almost seems like a good way to immigrate into the country. You go there, learn the language by getting immersed, work your way without bordem to a good job, and then get out and live in a mostly crime free city. Bam!
As an American I think that's the best way to run a prison, You'd think Our country could do but Our Government is so crooked that it just wouldn't work,
Just because there are worse places, that doesn't mean that this is so good. They shouldn't be so cramped up and endure bad air quality inside their cells, they should be allowed more 'yard time', I didn't see any mentions of educational programs (as in, school), etc. 24/7 surveillance - very questionable. The loss of freedom should be the penalty in itself - adding to that should not be the purpose.
If they had the really bad criminals, then this would be a different story. But since most of them are on the lower end, it is honestly pretty fair. The prison is pretty nice but still has punishments/limitations to correct behavior, the prisoners and guards seem to be on good terms (compared to other places where it's a mini war), etc. The boredom/isolation sucks but is a fair punishment. I think this is a good standard of prison and prisoner. More low threat prisons should be like this.
A tame maximum security prison is evidenced by the guards being able to keep striking weapons on them. Even officers working minimum and medium security facilities in the US feature unarmed guards, except the special operation response teams, lest their weapons be turnt against them. Also, escape from a penitentiary on a tiny, well populated island who's nearest neighbor is super hostile wouldn't be pragmatically possible regardless of the thickness of the walls.
Its tough specially when the world don't give you much opportunity and you resorted on doing crime but prison taught you many things and opportunity while inside
