- Yes, we actually went to prison! With permission and under guard we were able to film what breakfast in a Japanese prison is really like. If you do not attend school to obtain a Japanese chef's license, at least two years of work experience is required, but this prison work is also recognized as experience and can be used to obtain a license.

@@DonaldMcNuGGeT I agree. I hate when people praise for doing basic work. They are prisoners or workers. Do they really think anyone going to act stupid in a prison where guards are watching you're every move or while on camera? You can go to the worst fast food chain and tell them you're going make a video, then watch how fast and clean the place gets while everyone working with a smile. There's no respect or anything. It's either I'm there to do a job or I'm a prisoner that rather work in the kitchen than be out working in the fields.
Prisoners usually don't care about the law or who's watching. The fact they want to go home is a huge factor in being disciplined and going home. If someone is doing life they really don't care. These guards are also modeling the behavior they want to see. Working in there is actually a privilege not everyone can so it is big deal just like if you couldn't work and had to sit in a cell all day @@la8ball

@@josippetkovic389 the government lies about its homeless population for one. Most Japan citizens are making the same wages as the 90’s paid, there also a lot of social issues and a lack of creativity with most citizens.
Also there’s way to many elderly people not even children bring born to take over the next generation.
Just to name a few things
Hell in 2023 Japan makes you bring a stupid stamp around just to file any sort of document when you’re out in public literally anywhere.
They also have a lot of Internet issues in offices, a Way higher level of depression, and then countries in the west.
You need to not watch so much anime and really research what real Japan is like

But going with that extreme level discipline is what I'm kind of interested in pretty much. It's foreign to me - it looks from the outside as a "machine" that does a good job at what it is doing

The fact that a UA-cam channel got permission to film under Japanese penal system is still kinda mind blowing to me. Seen one in Singapore prison but that was produced by a TV network. 👍👍

@@Del-CanadaIDK from what I have seen and experienced on the outside at least Japanese people seem to be a very cleanly people. It would not surprise me that their prisons are just as spotless. Now in America they do not even hide the filth.

Not so. I have designed well over 100 prisons and jails, and the great majority of them are very clean. All of the state prisons in Wisconsin with one exception are as clean as this one.

as an ex corrections officer in the states, THIS IS AMAZING! nobody understands how hard it is to deal with chow, they made a cake walk of it 10/10
This is better than any county jail, CDCR, and BOP.
I’m also ex corrections. I don’t believe this is real, I’ve never seen inmates this structured.
It looked like they were serving the entire population the way they would serve close custody in the US. It's crazy how they pull it off. Definitely a well oiled machine.
im sure, but you know every minute is dicated. they get a rule book the size of a phone book and it tells them when they wake, sleep, eat how to walk where everything is to be placed in your cell ect. compared to the states its like no free time and every min of your day you are expected to to x,y,z

Yeah, this is much better than just "stand in line in front of your cell". Then again, US prisons aren't exactly made for rehabilitation or teaching discipline. They're made to create recurring customers.

This reminds me a lot of military basic training. I appreciate how in Japan it’s truly rehabilitation by giving people a sense of self worth and structure they may not have had previously. Very interesting! Thank you so much for sharing.
Well to be fair they will only show you the nice part of JPN prison as we have seen in other prison documentaries. These are not the violent criminals and those guys are locked up in a more secure section.
@@JerBuster77plus the reason why there’s such a high rate of crimes being solved is that it’s not all too uncommon for someone to get falsely accused and be absolutely forced to admit they done it even if they haven’t. There was a very well done video on that topic here on UA-cam but the title slips my mind.
@@JerBuster77 Actually, your statement is NOT accurate. I am an Officer of the Court from California currently living in Japan for at least 2 more years studying the culture, including the legal system. For the facts, Japan has proportionally far less prisoners than those in the US and Europe, reflecting the much lower crime rate relative to population. As such, compared to the US, Japan has fewer prisons. Accommodations vary from small group dormitory style rooms to individual cells like in this video. Those criminals considered more dangerous are normally housed individually (LIKE IN THIS VIDEO). I don't know how you came up with your conclusion, but the details shown in this video is basically an average Japanese prison that apparently includes severe criminals. It serves no "constructive" purpose to provide untruths, unverified innuendo, etc.
One last point, compared to prisons in the US and other First World countries, the Japanese system is extremely focused on rehabilitation (an element that is supposedly the point of incarceration in the US, but rarely fulfilled if any). This is reflected in the recidivism rate in Japan, which is far lower than in the US or Europe. Based on just this aspect of their criminal justice system, I can only conclude that they must be doing something right.
Not to worry, criminals in the US are rarely prosecuted and given no bail when arrested.

American prison is just like the rest of the country, a business. Rehabilitation of inmates is not their concern, low cost labor is
@@krystal7916 If prison is a business, they would charge the inmates for rent, meals, laundry , and utilities. Living in a gated community with private security, like Black Hawk, is not cheap. The fact that inmates are being asked to do work is rehabilitation. It's not like they are making food which is being sold to the public.
Cooks do not need to be covered head to toe in restaurants. Normally you just want to avoid hair getting into the food. You dont even need gloves. The outfits are probably for the inmate's safety to avoid being splashed by hot water

Work ethics aside, there many kuro companies that take advantage of Japanese honesty and ethics, so many workers jump out the window at 20th floor.

I can only imagine how many meetings were needed before the proposal was approved. I'm surprised it even happened at all. I bet they put the idea forward five years before and it took that long to finally get the go-ahead (unless it was a government endeavour).

So much of the discipline and routine is an elevated form of what all children know from their school days. I imagine the self-discipline is very helpful for these men to give them a sense of purpose in their lives. A very, very interesting video.

Yeah, it's so helpful that Amnesty International has been writing reports about the abuses occurring in Japanese prisons for like 50 years. They're disciplined because they know what will happen to them if they do something like walk the wrong way or sit down wrong.

間に挟まれる所作がやはり刑務所といった感じだが、清掃が徹底されてるというものもあるが施設自体が随分と明るくて綺麗だな。時代で変わっていくものだね。
この施設は刑務所ではありますが、社会復帰促進センターという比較的刑が軽い人や刑期終了が近づいている人が出所後にうまく社会復帰できるように比較的出所後の日常生活に近い状態で生活させる施設です。動画にもあるように個室でテレビもあり、部屋にいる間は基本的に自由に過ごしていいようですし、現金も持つことができるようです。
そういう施設なので余計に明るくきれいに見えるのだと思います。
真面目な国民の税金で雨風しのいで衣食住足りてるんだ。せめて掃除くらい自分たちでしてもバチは当たらないと思う。

I was most impressed when they started weighing out the rice portions. Prisoners can put up with a lot, but perceived food inequality and unfairness can cause a lot of beef with the prisoners.

its honestly not that hard. Rice is easy to make and refrigerates really well in the event you have leftovers. As long as you have a bag of frozen veggies, eggs, and rice, along with basic seasonings, fried rice can be made in a matter of minutes. Add in some chicken nuggets or something from an air fryer and you have a whole meal in under 15 mins
The Japanese still smoke in restaurants and are heavy drinkers.

Prisoners only reflect the society they come from. The Japanese are an orderly people and very disciplined. Even though these guys broke laws against societal norms. They still come from a discipline society, unlike the U.S. or other notorious prison systems ie Mexico.
You're seriously deluded if you think all Japanese prisons and prisoners are like what you see in this video which is probably heavily staged.
America can learn a lot from this. Order and discipline are what criminals need before being released.
It also makes it safer for everyone in prison. Maybe that's where other countries have got it wrong. Do they have riots in prison. I doubt it.

That’s a lot easier to do when you live in a country with a homogeneous culture that is so prominent that even the lowest of society adhere to it. Something like this just wouldn’t be possible in the states, we’re just too culturally diverse. It would also require holding people accountable, something that when mentioned around progressive politicians, strangely induces projectile vomiting.
America and Japan have almost nothing in common and so this statement means literally nothing.

本動画のキャベツ(味噌汁の具)は前日に芯を包丁で切り落とし、フードカッターで細かく切られてると思慮されます

Absolutely agree. Belgium is one of them. Our prisons are overpopulated because criminals have more rights than their victims over here 😡

I think Japanese prisoners eat better and healthier than most student lunches here in the States.
Just scrolled down and expected the first comment to be about american school food, but it was only the second. The 1st comment was about american food in general.

Probably cleaner and way healthier than the food our children eat for school lunches! This process is remarkable! This is what rehabilitation looks like! It looks like maybe everyone gets a chance to prepare and serve the food. People given structure, skills and respect will most likely stay out of the system. Well done!

資格はともかく、不自由承知で三食寝床医療付きの環境が欲しくて出戻ってくる人も少なからず居るのも現実。

Are you insane? Japanese prison is no cakewalk. It's exceptionally hard, disciplined and institutionalised. I suppose it has better food than most US prison's but that's not so high a standard, I've seen what your motels serve!

I have quickly researched on internet about thier staple food.
There are several provisions about food in prison in Japan.
"Rice" is staple food in Japan as many of you know.
The rice in prison is not common rice as we usually eat at home.
Barley is mixed and ration is like Rice : Barley = 7:3.
Polishing rate is also ruled as 93-94% in weight.
That means rice is not white enough.
Most japanese consider that is not tasty.
I think that is very healty and good food, because they contains more dietally fiber than common rice meal.
Food calorie is also classified in A,B,C(1600 -1200 kcal) for different work type basically.
Very interesting.I didn't know none of them before.

It looks like rice mixed with barley, some type of soup (usually miso) with vegetables and a protein source, and pickled radish strips. Very basic actually for Japanese standards

うーん、だから累犯も多くて困ると聞いている。刑期明けでも、迎えに来る人はいないし、頼る人もいないから、むしろ刑務所の方が良いって。特に高齢者。それはそれで問題なんだけどね。
