    • @ithemba
      @ithemba 3 роки тому +2

      @@lo3572 there absolutely are SS amps that can go really loud and do it brilliantly, given they run into a decent cab (most of the amps we tend to think about when thinking SS lack at that certain area). Buuuut I'd say: for certain kind of sounds, say: 60s mid-gain sounds, valve still has a different response and will do a better job than any (non-digital-modelling) SS.
      but it has its reasons why nearly every really important high gain sound on any heavy record was based at least partially on pedals. The differences in "harmonic structure" as rob puts it get less and less pronounced the more gainstages you stag together.
      He obviously was listening for a certain kind of sound which he identified as "valve" (maybe a bit more into overdrive territory than compressed higain) which led him to misidentifying every hi gain amp in the video.

    • @lo3572

      darillio I recently tried a lauded Marshall Valvestate (the one Chuck Schuldiner used) into a H&K 4x12 with V30’s & it was horrible. Sounded just like a remember SS amps to; squishy bottom end & piercing highs with no body at all. The louder it got, the worse it sounded. Compared to even a bad tube amp there was no comparison

    Would be cool if Rob made a video on what he listens for in those blindfold tests. Or instead of a dedicated video, a quick explanation every video would be great. Just like he did in the actives vs passives challenge where he explained to Lee how he listened to the feedback to figure it out. Would work for guitars too, explaining for example the differences in neck shapes from company to company. Not that most of us had any practical use for it, I just think it's interesting to hear how the different stuff works and how that effects things.

    You guys should do an Eric Clapton amp shootout!! Go from a bluesbreaker to tweed champs to musicman to Marshall to slo100 to vibrokings to tweed twins. It would be really cool and I bet lee would love it!!

      Well not exactly 500 guitar 500 mods, they could potentially buy a cheaper guitar and have more money for mods or more expensive guitar and less mods etc

    I wonder how loud it was in the room, valve amps really don't like being played quietly, it kills the tone. A Kemper can do the tone of a loud valve amp at any volume.
