1. Older gentleman admitted that he liked the instruments but not the vocals. Who’s to say he wouldn’t develop a taste for it?
2. Girlie is already on her way.
3. Younger gentleman is at least tolerating it and being receptive. Maybe he’ll get into it someday.
Metal and jazz exposes how most people are actually pretty close-minded to music, which is fine, most people seem to only really like 1 to maybe 3 genres of music, but so many people like to say or think "I like everything" when you ask what types of music they like. Diverse pools and extreme forms of music seem to mostly be for audiophile musician types.
I used to be that way. I would only listen to metal and electronic music. Somewhere along the way I wanted to discover music and just started listening to anything I enjoy. I’m very open with genre but I’m pickier when it comes to what I download. I honestly just love music.
@@Buswork292 I used to also when i was younger, I only liked classic rock and classic hip hop, and barely dabbled in the beginnings of hard rock, now, even though I mainly listen to extreme death metal 90% of the time cuz that's the genre I write my music in, and is by far my favorite thing on this planet that isn't my girl or a family member, I thoroughly understand why 99% of everything I hear exists, and totally enjoy probably 90% of everything I hear, and partially or mostly enjoy the rest. There are pockets of genres I can't really stand, but most of the stuff I can't seriously get into is polka and yodeling type things, and I hate bubblegum pop, and though I understand it, and can take at least something away from it, I hate how emo and glam metal colors outsiders' perspectives of what metal is. The other day I signaled to a coworker how ridiculous a small group of young emo kids were dressed trying to be extra overly edgy-looking, and he mostly listens to hip hop as far as I know, I know he at least also likes reggae when i have it playing in the back room, but anyway, he said "that's your people right there," and I was compelled to say nooooooo way, metal and emo are extremely different, emo wishes it was metal, pff* lolz! I will personally gatekeep emo from metal forever, it is a disgrace to extreme metal :P they just get lucky with cool riffs sometimes, haha!
I have a lot of trainees come through my job driving shotgun with me, and every single time I asked about music its "I listen to anything bro" but I've learned to probe deeper because nearly every single time what they actually mean is "mainstream rap, radio pop, butt-rock" with the occasional country listener.

I agree with your sentiment, but the level of heaviness they're pushing on him is just retarded. They should've started like 7 levels softer. You don't start with ultra brutal technical death metal, you start with classic heavy metal and move up the ladder.

"i like to be able to understand the lyrics" is one the of the most common reasons i hear for not liking metal, so i tell people to start looking the lyrics up and reading them while the song plays and you start to be able to hear the words more clear.

yeah thats one of the reasons i love metal! at first not knowing what theyre saying but getting the experience of looking it up and gaining more knowledge and context. i don't get why people need to have obvious lyrics at the ready right away.
I can't understand vocals in general until I read the lyrics. It's a bit easier to understand with sung over scrumbed vocals but I am just bad with words so it's not much different.
I don’t understand how people get “distracted” by metal. I fell asleep to Cellar Door by Spiritbox on my flight to the Caribbean the other day😂
I actually only listen to bands, if I can fall asleep to their music. Music has to be able to hype me up, the same way as to relax me and calm me down. And that is the case even with Slaughter to prevail, Darko US or Heaven Shall Burn for example.

The disconnect between metal heads and non metal heads is so fascinating, I truly can’t relate to how people don’t hear the musicality in screaming let alone find it “distracting”.
It’s like were looking at the exact same thing but seeing different colors
When it comes to screaming in particular, I really do think it's a sort of acquired taste. For most who don't listen to metal, the yelling and screaming is probably just distracting because they recognize it as some sort of anger/agitation more than anything else.
Takes time getting used to when I first started listing to metal I was like this is just noise I had to start off with easier songs to listen to and then I would gravitate towards more heavier songs

This type of music used to give me anxiety. It felt both cheesy and abrasive, like someone was yelling at me. Instrumental Prog metal (fusiony) acts like Plini were my gateway into metal and now I get it. But I also get where they are coming from, especially the older gentleman

As a Veil of Maya fan since 2008, it really makes me happy seeing them on here! Incredibly talented group of dudes that I feel are heavily underappreciated for what they bring to the table. Okubo, Applebaum and Hauser write some of the nastiest and most intricate parts in modern metal hands down.

I’m not Christian or religious but good music is good music and I was a huge fan of BTA and Impending Doom from way back when. Also some other great Christian metal notables from back then I remember In The Midst Of Lions had some sick breakdowns, For Today, The Chariot, A Plea For Purging, etc I could go on. Like I said good music is good music regardless of religious differences. I’m glad back then they toured with different types of bands as well. You could run up to a show and hear For Today and an hour later get a set from Whitechapel on the same tour.
I was at one of those tour dates with Whitechapel and For Today! To this day it's one of my favorite shows. For Today absolutely killed it. Whitechapel is actually from Knoxville where we're located, and the bassist was a member here at Armor for years.@@Jin_Raiden

I had never heard of dreamwake and they opened for a concert I went to with night rider. It was easily the craziest show I have ever been to.
