That is great :D I also love "genre hopping" from finnish folk metal to synthwave over 80s pop to Pagan and Middle-Ages music and extremely cheesy Power Metal back to anime theme songs for the nostalgia. I also love "genre mashups" - bands that add new styles to existing ones. I would love more synth metal... And that means you are totally above the "I listen to everything" guys. Because the sad truth is, that this sentence just means "they don't care about music and listen to just whats on the radio".
My favorite concert experiences: Pantera/white zombie/fear factory; Paul Simon/Bob Dylan (played an acoustic set of Johnny cash songs between their sets!!!!); Emerson, lake, and Palmer/Jethro Tull; and my daughter's high school orchestra playing Mozart. People always give me weird looks when my playlist goes from Mozart to Merle Haggard, to Motorhead. I just love good music. If a song is good, then a song is good!
If I hear someone saying "I like metal", I ask them what bands they like, and then show them more underground bands they might enjoy. I've made quite a few friends this way, and lots of them are also more into metal because of me. That's how you do it. ;)

I love metal and I think it's great when someone new or not as seasoned in the metal world listens and supports it. No reason to put them down for not knowing it all. There are way too many bands out there to know all songs by every band anyways. Especially with playlists and streaming these days.
As a teenager I really hated the metal gatekeepers who would accost me with their “name three songs” rubbish. Because a teenage girl couldn’t possibly listen to the band she’d paid good money to see live.
Sad to hear that you had to deal with such a**holes. If you go to see a band live that is dedication, what do they want more - extra points if you don't know them yet but maybe are pleasently surprised afterwards. But the "name three songs" stuff is best played on those "look how cool I am" instagram teens and young adults who wear a bandshirt as fashion accessoire without even knowing the band or even the music genre (!) they are playing. Those people I cannot stand, so it is ok in this regards. My opinion.
@@lindendrache8998 I’ve lost count of the number of times it’s been assumed I couldn’t possibly know the band whose shirt I’m wearing because of my appearance. You also see gatekeeping when people get offended that kids who watched Stranger Things are rocking 'Master of Puppets' now. It is like, dude, they are 15, it is probably their first exposure to Metallica. I think people forget how long ago 1991 was, especially for someone who is a teen now.
I know someone like this. I have every genre under the sun on my phone, but if I'm not playing straight up rock around this dude, he'll complain incessantly lol.
Not only name every song, what/who inspired the songs, but what are the time signatures, chords, notes, when the songs were recorded and what equipment was used to record the songs. I know I forgot some of the other things, but I'm not a real music fan. 🙉
I really feel like a bad person for recognizing all of them. Sometimes people ask me WTf I'm listening to and they just go like "It's not that heavy" like if it's all that matters on casual listening experience... It's basically the same as going to a freezing cold swimming pool and telling people it's kinda warm, just so you feel superior. IDK listen to shit you like and nice video as always
It's not. It's ok to recognize all of them, should I even mention that? What's wrong if you're not trying to convince that other people tastes are bad? I don't understand.
In my experience, metal elitists are those who'll claim that only the aggressive sounding bands are real metal, and if they sing or have some electronic sound or something that isn't "brutal" they say the band sucks or are sell-outs and a bunch of crap. I knew a few of them back in the day, and I know of at least a couple of them that still remain that pathetic up to this day.

As an older dude who has been guilty of this same sort of thing countless times, I can tell you that it comes across to people the same way as a dude who pulls up to the stop light rattling your stomach with his rap music; or the guy who revs his loud engine when passing pedestrians. In his mind, he’s proud of it, but to everyone else just trying to do their thing, it makes the guy seem super obnoxious. In public, I’ve found 70’s-80’s feel-good hits are the way to have everyone feeling groovy. No offense intended though, just an observation. Have a great day!
@augenmaugen As a music lover, Classic Rock is the most universally accepted type of music. Whether its a group of older folk or younger kids. If they don't care for it, there's never a negative or angry reaction.
I am not a fan of elitists of any genre to be frank. There really is no purpose to gatekeeping in a beneficial and/or positive sense. Just enjoy what you listen to, and expand your horizons.
About the only gatekeeping I think is necessary is that you should at least listen to the music if you're going to call yourself a metalhead, punk, etc. Fortunately, I've never really seen this in metal, but the goth community frequently complains of people calling themselves goth yet not listening to a single goth band. The person just likes dressing in black and has a thing for the macabre.
There was a video describing how skrillex killed the dubstep scene. Took the flashy parts and made the genre into the mainstream. Leaving the essence. Bands selling out are similar. Gatekeeping should be essential -inviting people to check below the surface. If you just enjoy what you are listening to, its unlikely that you expand your horizon. If you really like something ask the nerds into it.
Nah, there absolutely is a virtue to gatekeeping. Just look at what happened to the video game industry. The reason metal isn't doing full on lowest common denominator pandering is the fact that its intensity turns many ppl off, and that rebelliousness and grotesqueness are core traits of the genre.
Gatekeeping is one of the most annoying behaviors you can find in a person. I personally don't give a shit if I see someone wearing a band shirt and they don't understand what it means. I don't take it personally because I don't make my passion for metal my entire identity. This girl I worked with wore a slipknot shirt because she thought it was a clothing brand. It was pretty funny and I told her she was lucky it was me she told that to. She ended up being open to hearing some of their stuff and I gave her some songs. She probably would have been put off if I started acting like a twat.
This is the reason i dont' consider myself a metal head anymore and more 'music nerd.' That being said I LOVE promoting new music to friends especially smaller/local artists that rule. Also I was half expecting you to end on something more avant garde like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or Unexpect, but what you did definitely works haha.
I will refer to myself as a metalhead whenever possible. Especially, around gatekeepers. If they have a fucking problem with it, then it's honestly THEIR problem and not mine. The thought about whether I'm a "true" metalhead or a poser can live in their head rent free all goddamn day for all I care.
@@captainshiner42 i dig this response, so yeah to metal heads this works, but honestly it has a LOT of stigma among other genres of music and 'normies' which honestly is most of the world. I wish you could have been in high school in the 80s. The metal-head arguments were epic. I remember two lads arguing about Black Sabbath's "Live Evil" album, where one was arguing it was pronounced as a long-i in "Live" and the other arguing it was a short-i.
I come from the old times of "ahhhhrg that's just noise ñañañaañaaaa" So to hear nowadays that people like all kinds of music, including metal, is so refreshing, and actually speaks great about younger kids

It's like when your just wearing a band shirt and some dude with his phone camera and an inquisitive look comes up to you and starts barraging you with questions like, now many songs do you know by them? How long have you been a fan? Have you ever seen them live?😅 I swear these people have nothing better to do 😅
I never meet these people. But perhaps it also matter that the bands I wear shirts of generally are small and unknown. You don't get shirts of those bands unless you specifically seek them out. For bigger bands though, shirts are often sold at the mall. So if someone wears a Nirvana shirt, there really is a chance he doesn't have a clue who Nirvana is.

The only thing that annoys me is when someone is essentially bragging about how heavy their tastes are and subtly acting as if they know I couldn’t handle it, and their heavy turns out to be Skillet.
But those who usually say they listen to everything listen to almost exclusively radio pop music, so, therefore closer to nothing, really. Something, at best.
This is not only a type of metal fan but a type of person you find everywhere. It happens when you haven't touched much grass and base your whole personality/ego/self worth around the particular thing you're into at the time. It's normal to feel proud about what you like and know but not normal to diminish people for not liking or know it.
I usually hate it when people say "I listen to everything" because when i'm asking about your tastes in music i'm trying to get to know you and get a conversation going about something and you're giving me nothing.

Same. I hate that so much. Or they say "I just listen to anything that sounds good" As if 'good' is objective. I think a better response woulda been something like 'oh i listen to a buncha diff genres' or 'oh my taste is pretty eclectic' and then give a few examples.
That was literally a friend of mine back in school... heard all that mainstream heavy metal stuff and frustrated the heck out of me for not understanding the beauty of a black metal soundwall.
FAS is such an incredible album, I love Deathspell Omega. That said, I listen to some truly unhinged stuff (I make it too), but I completely understand whenever people can't latch onto the things I do. I remember I was into shit like morbid angel, suffocation, deicide, throughout high school, but because I wore designer clothing like diesel, guess, Tommy Hilfiger, etc., short combed hair, and hung out with more of a “normie” crowd rather than alternative, most metalheads at school would call me a poser (unironically) or exclude me completely, I thought the metalhead subculture was all about the music and not the image, and not just that but I thought alternative people would be less judgmental since they’d know it’s like to be judged simply for your appearance…
I listen to all those bands but dress like a 'normie' too, apart from the occasional metal tee. Metal to me is about kickass music, not fashion or lifestyle. Sounds like they were the true posers for caring about superficial shit like that.
Asking people about their musical taste is just a great way to shut down conversation for me. It is hard to find common ground with people. I am a swamper on a truck and the drivers spend all day flipping back and forth through the radio stations trying to find the background noise they desire, all the while avoiding the one radio station that I like that actually digs up cool music ranging from folk to funk to reggae to you name it. They always wind up saying "why is there never anything good on the radio?" And inside I'm just like "I can't imagine why that is". Among my peers, basically everyone I've asked has said "I listen to everything" immediately followed by the list of things they don't listen to (always being the things I like). I know that I am the snob here; it's no one's problem but mine but since you brought it up, Bradley I thought I would speak my piece. Now that the rant is done, I thought your white turtleneck was funny.
Yeah if you make music its important to have an open mind for all genres, and in process of learning, you even learn to like more types of music than just the genre you've been starting with
I actually genuinely like Bach, Mozart an Vivaldi. Some of it is the fault of Swedish telivisions public test image, some of it elderly relatives fault. But I mostly "blame" Bugs Bunny. I like metal best when it has this feeling of monumentalness, and contrast within the song, even if it "goes hard" all the way through the song, regardless of specific type of metal. And I prefer the metal that takes all you anger and negativity, grinds it into black powder and sets fire to it, and "blows you into outer space". Metal should make you feel good, or if not at least give you energy to get the (bleep!) over it. There are DEFINATELY a few genres I DONT LIKE, but I can count those genres on one hand. Kinda like, I like southern gothic and SOME bluegrass, but most country or western I call "horsejazz" (NOT all). Swedish dansband music I have a hard time with, though. Because its just SO (!) MONOTONE. It COULD be done good, it could be the new rockabilly, but it ISNT its just retired peoples "pickup" music (it gets them layed after the dancing is over). And SOME jazz, where the voice sound the same all through the song....bleagh! Like GET ME THE (!) OUT OF HERE! And some.....mainstream music today? like, people AESTETHICS IS NOT ACTUAL GOOD MUSIC!!!! And neither is sitting with a PC clipboard checklist and making THAT a song. Im sure Ive forgotten some genre, but those are the ones that come to mind. I like Enya, ABBA, ACDC, Nirvana, Metallica, The Cure, Tina Turner, Smash Mouth and a lot of other stuff, both poppier or darker, but yeah, Id probs still say this. "I listen to a little bit of everything". heh.
Never met someone like this. Usually I get the "If you don't like the original version of a band or don't know obscure song number 11 you're a poser" type elitists. That or the gatekeepers.
To be fair, I think I've met like, 2 dudes that were actually eclectic in my entire life. For each of those 2, I've met like a 100 that are just actual posers who listen to nothing but whatever was playing on MTV/the radio back then, and now listen to whatever is trending on spotify, and then go on to call themselves "eclectic" because they have a random Metallica or SOAD song lost in some playlist otherwise comprised of "spotify's top 100 international hits" or whatever.
Tbh, people who are like "I listen to all kinds of music" usually are veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee[...]eeeeeeeeeery ignorant of 75% music genres...or, right after that, they will say "yeah, don't like classical or metal or modern jazz or lofi or anaything, cause it's impossible to danse on it"...
my most hated type of metal fans are the ones who think obscurity is synonymous with quality. You can't have a civil music discussion without them posting bandcamp links to stuff nobody has ever heard of or cares about.
I've noticed a weird phenomenon online in recent years where people will say stuff like "are these Metal elitists in the room with us right now?" while literally being a textbook example of exactly what the term refers to.
Totally agree, goes in hand with the spas that quiz people on song titles based on the T-shirt they are wearing as if you need to pass some sort of test to be allowed to wear it.
People who say they "listen to all music" are ten times more annoying, because they never actually DO listen to all music. They just mean they listen to whatever their friends listen to, but will immediately demand you turn the music off whenever they hear something outside of their comfort zone.
People who say they like all kinds of music usually put an "except" at the end of the sentence and then begin to exclude everything until only "country" is left.
Metal isnt just bands who use thorn bush font. Believe it or not, metal includes bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. After all, those type of bands are why the term metal exists.
I listen all musics that give me emotions and goosebumps no matter the genre. I don't hate elitists, I just don't understand them because all genres inspire each other, for example classic music and opera influences are common in rock and metal...
Great! What matters is the MUSIC! So, the emotions being evoked and snd the beauty! Sonically, but at least a decent lyrics (even if i don’t care much mostly about lyrics, just for the sake of knowing), i care first and the most about the sonic experience in a nutshell!
I’m a bit like this but more than anything I just get really excited that I found someone else who listens to metal and want to show them this cool band what I like
It's alot to hate about metal fans and just fanbases in general. If you truly love music you'll divide yourself from the community's they ruin everything.

Metalheads gatekeep sm and I hate it. I consider myself a metalhead, Megadeth, Meshugga, Man'o'war, all stuff I love, but I hate it as soon as you bring up something that isn't metal (especially pop) you get judged so hard for it
Judged by who? Some random person on the internet? I don't get the sentiment in this comment section, why does everyone CARE so much what other metalheads think of them? Isn't it part of the entire metal culture that you don't give a **** about what other people think? What does it matter whether other people think your music is metal or not? Just listen to it and enjoy it, you don't need other people's affirmation to do that.
@@frankvandorp2059 it's frustrating when you're trying to have a conversation about something you enjoy, like music, and you're being scrutinised because of how you choose to enjoy it is all
I was like this as a teenager because so many people said they like all types of music on the internet. Most of them did not like metal because of the screaming vocals. Naturally, it was incredible annoying to find other "lesser," genres receive more traction even though they are easier to produce and quality of music was out the door. Nowadays I've learned to just not care anymore and have met like-minded friends who listen to all the stuff I like plus what I haven't heard before. Yes, I like music, but can't stand certain genres for what they are. So I am specific in my response. Again, no one really cares what I think, so I save it for a music-lover conversation.
To be fair, both sides of this can be annoying. Virtually everyone's answer to "what sort of music do you like" is "oh a bit of everything" and basically what they're saying is "I'm not going to contribute anything to this conversation even though I invariably started it." It is equally annoying though, when you say "I like metal" and people assume you listen to Slayer 24/7 and nothing else...I miss music college, where it didn't matter what you studied, basically everyone listened to a wide variety - with metal seemingly the most popular (musical theatre a close 2nd). The question "what music do you like" inevitably led to a 2 hour debate about why one person liked thrash and the other liked black metal, but in both cases not the other. By debate, I mean 2 hours of Spotify trawling, discussing the musical differences and the psychology/philosophy behind why one person would like one and not the other, analysing the similarities and differences over a cup of dodgily-imported green tea. Then you'd see perform a rap version of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" at an open mic night just before you played a jazz version of an S-Club 7 song at the open mic night. That genuinely happened. ...all that is true, but I left out the violinists. We didn't talk to them, weirdos. The real reason we didn't talk might be because I opened a stage door onto a £20k violin in my 1st year. It was fine...
Every time I’ve met a person who says ”I listen to everything” they’ve always meant ”I listen to the one radio channel playing only top hits and I’m not bothered by it enough to turn it off”. Anything I play (which will not be top hits) will immediately get an ”ew, that sounds weird” or ”that’s not music, it’s just noise and screams”. I did get an interesting answer once though, starting a new job. Me and my old band had just released our debut album and I asked some co-workers about their music taste. Some were interested, gave it a listen etc. and my new boss (also a guitarist) even bought a copy. But one guy straight up said ”no” when I asked if he was into music at all. 😅 don’t think I’ve ever gotten that answer before. I didn’t even bother mentioning I was in a band to him.
I used to be that guy. Eventually I realized that "I listen to everything" people are probably just easy going, well adjusted people who doesn't attach their entire identity to their taste in music.
Not a Metal elitist by any means, but I honestly do hate people that say they listen to "everything". Those people typically gravitate towards 1-2 genres specifically, and think that knowing a few Rock songs here and there means they "listen" to Rock/Metal as a whole. They're just kind of boring.

Sad to hear that you had to deal with such a**holes. If you go to see a band live that is dedication, what do they want more - extra points if you don't know them yet but maybe are pleasently surprised afterwards.

@@vcorkleth Identifying as a "metalhead" is fucking juvenile and probably not something grown adults should be doing 😄
@@vcorkleth I mean, they're two different things. If someone likes the clothing style but not the music, what else are they supposed to do?

My music taste has been all over the place for years, but metal has been a constant 🖤☠️🕷️🖤☠️🖤

To be fair, both sides of this can be annoying. Virtually everyone's answer to "what sort of music do you like" is "oh a bit of everything" and basically what they're saying is "I'm not going to contribute anything to this conversation even though I invariably started it."
It is equally annoying though, when you say "I like metal" and people assume you listen to Slayer 24/7 and nothing else...I miss music college, where it didn't matter what you studied, basically everyone listened to a wide variety - with metal seemingly the most popular (musical theatre a close 2nd).

I spend a worrying ammount of time discovering more music and instead of being a jerk just share some interesting new songs to friends
gotta love deathspell omega
Uh, I don't know it is that death metal stuff? It's ok I guess, a bit harder to follow than the other songs.
@@lopolik Black. But yeah, it's not exactly easy listening even for the genre.
@@perlundgren7797 Yeah, I mostly like the old school and the norwegian ones, so like Dissection, Immortal, Emperor, Bathory, some Enslaved too, and one album from Ulver, and yea just most well known in black metal I guess, I love the mid to late 80s black metal, when it was still kind of different, with early Sepultura, Kreator and Sarcofago stuff, I was checking out more of the other ones, like Marduk, but with black metal I just go back to my favorites, but I will try to listen to some Deathspell Omega.
I don't know much about Metal... but I was listening to Napalm Death and Carcass sessions on John Peel before you were born, so I feel I deserve some kudos for that.
You're not a real metal fan if you don't listen to futuristic-avant garde-doom-sludge-black-expieremental- post-art-prog-heavy-djent-batman-penis metal.
I'm one of those people. My favorite genres are black metal and eurodance :D
BO' 'OL O WO' 'AH and BODUL OF WADUR
I love that you include Deathspell Omega everytime you need something obscure and dissonant. Cocorico et al.
I had to hide my love of "other" music for a long time because of my metal elitist friends 😁
Ahh. So you basically didn't stand up for yourself. Got it lol.
@@jasonbodden8816 Well when you're 15 and your metal taste is already frowned upon (extreme metal) what would you do (and you live in butfuck nowhere and it's the only friends around 🤣
Metal fans I don't like. Can't take any criticism of their favorite band even if they sound terrible live. I have noticed mega fans of Slayer , Iron Maiden and Tool are especially like this. Refuse to accept Nu Metal as a thing and try to poop on anyone who likes it. They are the gate keepers of what REAL Metal is
My favorite styles of music have always been metal and punk but, I listen to a lot of different genres...blues, jazz, folk, country, industrial, and a lot of other types of music too. I don't much care for pop and hip hop but, I can still manage to find the odd artist or songs that I enjoy. I used to call myself a metalhead but I got turned off of the term by elitist pricks. Screw the labels, I'm just a music fan.
Same, I'm just a music fan too 🙂
This would make a good full length film! :D
The "I listen to all types of music" crowd are infinitely more insufferable. What they actually mean is "I listen to Triple J" or whatever mainstream indie radio station you have where you live. They hate the idea of genre crossovers and anything that pushes out of a 4/4 "beat". I don't believe them for a second, they don't like blues, jazz, classical or country. They are more closed minded about music than metal elitists, by a long shot!
I like good music. Doesn't matter what kind.
Techno, death metal, nu metal, classical, piano
I’m admittedly guilty of this. However I wanna see what metal they know not to be a jerk but rather I’m just excited someone likes the same music as me and I wanna know what subgenres they like
Exactly this
