With the hard top on, I think we're seeing something like 78" and it fits no problem in our garage with a standard 7' header. With the soft top on, the highest bow is something like 82" and so it's close but it still fits.
While we're typically not into tall lifts, the JL has a 2" longer wheel base and I swear, we could feel it on the rocks. What the extra lift does is help to restore our break over angles and while there is a center of gravity penalty, I think it was worth it. Ride quality is surprisingly nice too especially being that this is more of a budget lift than anything.

The install videos on the 2" lifts are all great - but I don't see any driving feedback. Can you do a compare / contrast / recommend video - or do they all test out about the same?
We have installed and tested multiple 2"-2.5" lifts and made videos of them. In fact, I have links for a few in the description. This one is on the taller side of things.
That lift looks great. I'm doing the 3.5 as well, but using MetalCloak. Nice job. Keep the content coming. You looked a bit perplexed on this video. What's up brother?
HI! Well, I mostly want to know how these lift kits ride on the street since that's where 90% of my riding will me. It's kinda hard to find reviews on that unless I dig into the forums. Simple things like how it handles potholes, or if it rides too soft/too hard, or how the steering is affected compared to stock. I still haven't bought a lift kit for my JL but i'll probably ask on one of the liftkit videos that you made if I made a decision on one! thanks for the reply and keep those videos coming!
I can't say I didn't cringe a bit watching you pull those Fox shocks out to replace them with Ranchos lol. I know you're testing them so i'll just be patient and see how they perform.
LOL!! Don't get me wrong, I DO like Fox shocks but there are specific reasons why. Most people I talk to wouldn't have a clue why they think they're better other than they look cool, cost more and are a brand that everyone recognizes as being "good". Truth be told, the RS9000XL shocks we just installed offer more travel and therefore offer greater flex and being that they're adjustable, can be set to ride SMOOTHER than a set of Fox. Now, I would be the first to admit that there are downsides to them but really, only for my purposes. Most people, I would argue the would be happier with a set of these RS9000XL's especially for a daily driver.
The Ranchos are steel. Basic old school hydro shocks with adjustablility. Great for daily driving and basic off road and very affordable. Where Fox outshines them in bombing across the desert or on really long stretches of rough terrain. In those situations, Ranchos will experience shock fade. Fox being monotubes will not due to the fact that they dissipate heat better and the fact that they have a separate nitrogen filled chamber that helps to prevent cavitation.
LOL!! I've always liked RS9000's being that they're adjustable and that you can set them to where you want. If there is a downside, it's that what's nice for off road isn't always stellar for pavement and having to adjust them all the time can be a pain. This is why I choose a setting somewhere in between so that I can leave it as is.
I was not done on the TJ nor on the JK. It's new to the JL and that's how they come from the factory and to help compensate for the weight of the gas tank being on the passenger side. It's actually kind of annoying being that you end up with a driver side lean instead.
Have always loved Rancho as a brand. Always good quality products. People that know what they are talking about. Is there a reason they didn't include the sway extenders, bump stops, or brake line brackets in this kit? Or did you order a la carte?
LOL!! Since you couldn't tell from the expression on my face, I wasn't expecting to get as much height out of this lift. I thought we might get about 4" but not close to 5". I should note that the coils have settled a bit since then but it's still over 4". That being said, we've been in the process of testing out different lifts and if we installed a long arm kit, that would be the end of that being there's no turning back. However, since running this lift, I can tell you that we haven't found a long arm is actually needed at this height. While one would correct suspension geometry, our ride quality hasn't suffered as much as we would have though.
LOL!! Sure, pick up a set of tall jack stands from Harbor Freight and a good floor jack that goes at least 20" tall. Back before UA-cam, I wrote a lot of installation write-ups. This one might be useful to you. project-jk.com/jeep-jk-write-ups/full-traction-suspension-jeep-jk-wrangler-3-ultimate-lift-installation-write-up
"Have to?" No. But if you don't, your Jeep will feel under powered and you will effectively lose 7th and 8th gear. With 37's, I would recommend 5.13 to bring your Jeep to about stock performance with a bit more power. With 40's, I would recommend a new set of 1-ton axles with 5.38's or at least, if you plan on wheeling your Jeep.
In the past, we've always preferred a soft top being that they were so much easier to remove. This was nice in far away destinations like Moab. However, the JL soft top is just as heavy and maybe even harder to remove and so now, we kind of like the hard top.
Eddie I must say you're awesome man. I wish I had your knowledge. I do work on my jeep, but never chanced it on my suspension. I have a question, I have a 2008 jeep wrangler unlimited sahara with a 6 1/2" BDS long arm with Tom woods front & rear shafts,. Is it possible I can drop it to 3 1/2" long arm no more than 4 1/2". Having many problems with my lower back I guess comes with age lol, it's making it a little uncomfortable getting in & out sometimes. Thank you sir for this awesome video as well.
Holy cow, 6-1/2"?? That's way more lift than I would ever hope to run on any of my Jeeps. Hell, even my JK running 40's is doing it with our coil overs set to about 3-1/2". Needless to say, yeah, depending on what size tires you have, I would install shorter coils but you will most likely need shorter shocks and depending on how much slip you have in your drive shafts, you may need to have them lengthened.
@@wayalife Thank you so much. Well in 2009 I wanted a lift & bigger tires cause I wanted to experience of a new offroading adventure, it was my first jeep, took it to a shop where they convinced me that this will be it, but as years went by I learned more & more about the jeep & the game, watching videos, & then came to conclusion that I do not need this so high to have fun, invested needless of thousands throwing work at it & here I am now hoping to get something like your set up. I ran 40's on 20 wheels with 513 gears & e-locker with stronger axle sleeves, blew my rear 2 times, now I'm running 37s on 17 which turned out better but now hoping on lowering this big boy to a 3 1/2". Only if I knew then what I know now. I can't get rid of my jeep, it's my 2nd wife lol. Thank you so much for your advice & always love your videos man.
Eddie what’s the best compromise between quality and price 2.5 inch lift kit for JL Rubicon? You probably get questions like this one 10x a day!! But there’s so much stuff out there. It’s hard to decide (even after watching your videos).
Well, what I can tell you is that ride quality is 100% subjective. And, based on my experience, you can spend $15000 on a kit and it still ride crappy. Being that budget is a concern, I personally would recommend that you buy a budget friendly lift kit like the Rancho Sport Lift. It'll give you what you are wanting and for about $600. I personally found it to ride exceptionally nice. Add the adjustable RS9000XL shocks and it'll be even better. If you're just wanting to run 35" tires, the Dyantrac 2" lift is a great choice too but it'll be about twice the cost.
The Fox shocks came with the Dynatrac lift we were testing out before. They were specifically made for the coils in that kit. This lift is significantly taller - more than twice as tall and the shocks we're now running were made for them. Hence, why they're called long travel shocks.
LOL - You assume that our other Jeeps all started off the way they look now. We're simply testing out products to help us get a better understanding of what works and what doesn't - what we like and what we don't. In spite of what so many seem to think, an expensive build isn't always as good as you'd think and sometimes, a budget friendly kit is better.
It's definitely on the tall side but with the JL having a 2" longer wheel base, it's kind of nice to have if only to regain lost break over angles. There is a penalty in center of gravity with it though.
Been watching your videos for awhile now and I’m curious what cordless ratchet you’re using and what you have thought of it over the time you have been using it? Otherwise another great video! Felt bad when you had to find out the front spring was to big. And the 40’s comment lol.
You typically need about as much bump stop extension as you have lift. While there are additional benefits to having them such as preventing the rubbing of your fenders at a full flex, the primary reason for having them is to help prevent the over compression of your coils. As in - compressing them so much that they no longer return to their original height.
A lift kits main purpose is to be able to fit a larger tire, tire size is what gets you your clearance since your differentials are your lowest point on your Jeep. The bump stops are a safety measure as Eddie said. If you put a lift, bump stops and stock tires then your “flex” does not change, but with the lift allowing a taller tire even with bump stops you gain axle geometry as the pivot point has changed with tire diameter......sooo bump stops are pretty important
Ummm, they're a fraction of the cost and something I already had and worked just as well for this application? Nothing wrong with installing longer brake lines and I have on all my other JK's but only when needed. Also, to properly bleed the lines on a JL, you need to have a scan tool use the ABS system to do it. That's typically something only your dealership can do and that makes it even more expensive to do. Sure, you can get by without it but your brakes will never be quite the same.
Really looking nice guys I love the white JL, your other rigs, shop and your videos. All top notch. Quick question; So with the 37's and maybe 40's in the future are the axles going to get worked over any time soon?
Well, we've already installed a Dynatrac ProRock 44 and you'll see a videos highlighting it as soon as tomorrow. 40's may have to wait a bit but only because we'll be getting a Gladiator :)
That kit is missing many vital components.. Its more of a set of replacement shocks and coils for an already lifted Jeep. That may confuse some people who are new to this stuff. A 3.5" lift would need at least upper adjustable controll arms as well wouldent it? On top of the extra parts you pulled out. Also drive shafts?
When we filmed this, I never say that this was a "kit", just that we were installing taller coils and longer shocks. However, as we clearly state in the video through the use of text here: ua-cam.com/video/yBCvuLGSHR4/v-deo.html it is now available as a complete kit. Drive shafts are not required but I would highly recommend them. Thus, why we also note with text that we have replaced ours here. ua-cam.com/video/yBCvuLGSHR4/v-deo.html
Now that you've had the Rancho for 4 years, would you buy it again? Is it maintenance free? Do you recommend any maintenance free kits? Does Clayton or MetalCloak make one?
So, in this video, all you're not seeing the complete kit getting installed being that I already had EVO arms and components. This is the video you should be looking at ua-cam.com/video/7EzDf1K_yOk/v-deo.html And, it is maintenance free. Very happy with it.
Better is subjective. What I can tell you is that a set of Rancho RS9000XL are essentially old school hydro shocks that are adjustable and you can set them to be as soft and firm as you want them to be. A good set of Fox shocks are monotube shocks and what you get with them is what you get in terms of ride quality - a bit on the firm side. Depending on what coils you're running, this could make your ride feel quite harsh. With that said, an old school hydro shock will eventually experience shock fade when driving very long stretches of rough terrain. Basically, the oil inside will begin to cavitate and the valve inside will no longer be able to provide the same amount of resistance. A monotube shock has a separate chamber filled with nitrogen that helps prevent this from occurring. Needless to say, if spend most of your time on pavement and maybe just do rock crawling, something like the Rancho shocks may be all you need. If you spend a lot of time bombing across the desert, a set of Fox would be the better way to go.
Very cool. Do you know just put in the lift without directions? Did I see a old Jeep Cherokee in you video? I really liked the look of them back in the day.
To be fair, I've been doing this for well over 20 years. Needless to say, all lifts are pretty much the same and yes, I can do it without looking at any directions.
I know these shocks were tuned for those springs, but if one wanted to get away from the old school hydro style shock, and get into a monotube, do you have any recs of one that would match well with these Rancho progressive springs?
Well, you could always order up a set of Kings and have them custom valved to how you'd like. Otherwise, you're kind of stuck with getting whatever it available off the shelf.
You're looking at KMC XD231 beadlock wheels. Not exactly the kind of wheel you want unless you know what you're getting yourself into. Most shops won't touch them.
I was whispering (he's going to need a spring compressor) each time you tried to fit the springs, then you pulled one out of the back of Jane. Great video!
LOL!! I could have gotten around the need for them had I unbolted the control arms. The jam nuts on the lower arms were binding on the mounts. But, the compressors made things go a lot faster.

Great video thank you!
You bet! Glad you found the video to be useful :)
LOL - perplexed?
When should you use Loctite? I would have figured you'd be using it for all those bolts that you'd expect to stay tightened? I guess not necessary?
You should use it on bolts and nuts that require it. Typically, manufacturers will tell you what needs it and what type to use.
That’s pretty tall LOL. I’d need a ladder to climb into that rig LOL. Great job!!
It's definitely on the tall side and really, not necessary for most people. Their 2" sport lift is more than adequate to clear 37's.
I wish there was full reviews on the previous lift kits rather than just installation videos
LOL!! What is it that you'd like to know? All you have to do is ask :)
Wayalife yeah I understand that. I agree for most people would be just fine a set of those ranchos. Are they steel body or aluminum? I couldn't tell
Checking the crystal ball..........I see 40’s in your future!
LOL!! Clearly you are clairvoyant :)
What’s up Wayalife 🍺🍺 now I’m gonna watch the video lol
Making it harder and harder to wait for next spring to get a JL! After running the JLX and the NY19 run how are you guys liking the shocks?
LOL!! I've always liked RS9000's being that they're adjustable and that you can set them to where you want. If there is a downside, it's that what's nice for off road isn't always stellar for pavement and having to adjust them all the time can be a pain. This is why I choose a setting somewhere in between so that I can leave it as is.
OK another question. What front bumper do you have i like it also. Thank You for your time.
In this video, an LoD Destroyer Shorty
Why is there a left/right difference? I've never heard of this before. I wonder if the same thing is done to Jeep TJ lift kits.
I got this kit as an upgrade to what I already had. You can get the complete kit now though ua-cam.com/video/7EzDf1K_yOk/v-deo.html
Why you didn't go with long arms
Any recommendations on doing a full lift install with no car lift lol
LOL!! Sure, pick up a set of tall jack stands from Harbor Freight and a good floor jack that goes at least 20" tall. Back before UA-cam, I wrote a lot of installation write-ups. This one might be useful to you. project-jk.com/jeep-jk-write-ups/full-traction-suspension-jeep-jk-wrangler-3-ultimate-lift-installation-write-up
No drilling or trimming or cut for this rancho 3.5 lift kit and don't need anything right?
No drilling or cutting is needed to clear 37" tires.
Awesome Job 👌
Thank you :)
How are you liking the rancho shocks? Love my Rs9000xl's
Actually, we like them a lot. Great bang for the buck
Sooner or later i will see king shocks on the jl
Also note to self get shock compressors
LOL!! This is very likely :)
Nice jeep
Thanks 👍
Saw you were using the LOD sliders at the end of the video. How are they holding up?
Holding up great :)
Do have to regear the wrangler rubicon to fit 37s or 40s?
"Have to?" No. But if you don't, your Jeep will feel under powered and you will effectively lose 7th and 8th gear. With 37's, I would recommend 5.13 to bring your Jeep to about stock performance with a bit more power. With 40's, I would recommend a new set of 1-ton axles with 5.38's or at least, if you plan on wheeling your Jeep.
do you like the hard or soft top more? Great lift
Compromise? As in ride quality? Because, most of the kits at that height are all made well enough.
Wayalife compromise as a good kit but not too heavy on the wallet ha ha
Wayalife there are kits out there for anything between 500 to even $5000. How the heck do you pick one? :)
Wayalife thanks so much!!
Rancho or Teraflex suspension? Overall pick ?
Me personally, Rancho and without question.
When did you change out the Rancho shocks for FOX shocks and why. There is no video of that. Which Fox did you buy?
The Fox shocks came with the Dynatrac lift we were testing out before. They were specifically made for the coils in that kit. This lift is significantly taller - more than twice as tall and the shocks we're now running were made for them. Hence, why they're called long travel shocks.
Hi, just wondering if the lift kits are the same for LEFT HAND DRIVE car and RIGHT HAND DRIVE car. ? I know in USA is LEFT HAND DRIVE car.
It is "possible" that they're different. At least, I'm pretty sure that the OE coils are.
Will this system work for the 2019. Can’t seem to find. Thanks Eddie
Yes.
Nice Video! but why run such a budget lift compared to your other builds?
Austin Smith testing different lifts, to provide good information to people.
LOL - You assume that our other Jeeps all started off the way they look now. We're simply testing out products to help us get a better understanding of what works and what doesn't - what we like and what we don't. In spite of what so many seem to think, an expensive build isn't always as good as you'd think and sometimes, a budget friendly kit is better.
wow you're right that is almost too tall but i love it!
It's definitely on the tall side but with the JL having a 2" longer wheel base, it's kind of nice to have if only to regain lost break over angles. There is a penalty in center of gravity with it though.
Hey eddie where did you get the Battle Borm flag you have hanging up??
Bought it from a local flag shop
@@wayalife that was my national guard brigade. We are out of AZ and Nevada. Just caught the eye!!
Eddie what's the highest of your front bumper
Highest what? Cost? Measurement to the top of it from the ground? Sorry, I just don't know what you're asking.
Been watching your videos for awhile now and I’m curious what cordless ratchet you’re using and what you have thought of it over the time you have been using it?
Otherwise another great video! Felt bad when you had to find out the front spring was to big. And the 40’s comment lol.
The springs settled out. This is the ratchet I use. amzn.to/2TzLlMz and I have other tools listed in the description. Works great for my needs.
What do y’all do with the lifts that you take off?
What video did you install the rear shock skids and do i really need them?
They're not really needed.
can someone explain why you need bump stop extensions? im confused as to why you are potentially removing 3 inches of extra travel
Awesome video and yes wholly 🐄 it seats higher 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
LOL! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Curious Why do you use extension brackets for the brake lines rather then getting longer brake lines? Steve
@@wayalife Oh ok did not notice that. Wow a Gladiator great for you guys, I can't wait to see what you have planned for that bad boy.
This is the video you should be looking at ua-cam.com/video/7EzDf1K_yOk/v-deo.html
And, it is maintenance free. Very happy with it.
which is better fox or rancho shocks ??????
How would this rancho look on a sport unlimited 2020 jl 4door they dont make 3and half anymore for it they only have 4.50 inch would it be ok
What you see in this video is the Rancho 4.5" Crawler Suspension System ua-cam.com/video/7EzDf1K_yOk/v-deo.html
How would that work on a sport ? And would the same torque specs apply to the sport same lift kit ?
@@mattbrewer8146 It would work exactly the same way on a sport.
Awesome thank you so much figured it would be the same will be doing this for to long great detailed vedio .
Love the wheels. Anyone know what they are called? I have a white jl Jeep Wrangler Sahara
You're looking at KMC XD231 beadlock wheels. Not exactly the kind of wheel you want unless you know what you're getting yourself into. Most shops won't touch them.
