I'm from Belfast, Dunmurry and the Delorean factoy was in the Dunmurry Industrial Estate. It was just behind my secondary school. As kids we would explore it as it was always left abandoned. We would ride our bikes around the parabolic curve on the test track. I believe it's still there today. This was in 1994ish. People from Dunmurry love telling this story, lol. It's our claim to fame. We built the time machine!! Oh and an Irish hardware store is called B&Q(Block and Quayle), and an Irish name beginning with a 't', Tara for girls or Tiernan for boys.

I own a dmc 12 and did alot of what you are doing. It's part of the fun. Build quality was pretty good on the later cars. But there are alot of great modern updates you would want to do. Billet front lcas (they were weak), solid state relays, borgeson steering shaft with damper. I mean you get the idea. Dpi has alot of great stuff. They were built in Northern Ireland but they had the stainless body panels made at a factory in Carlow that did panels for all kinds of cars. The stainless could not be pressed in one go, so there were 5 stages, 5 giant dies, all weighing 5 tons each. Those dies now hold down a giant tarp at the bottom of Galway Bay. I was in the Carlow factory which is a totally different company today, but they told me that when they bought the place, there were loads of shells and door skins out back which had to be destroyed due to licencing. Ouch! Good luck with the build, delighted for you and feeling the excitement 🎉❤

This is like watching every step of my wife and I with our Delorean. Paid $12,500.00 for ours. It was sitting in a barn for 20+ years. Similar condition but more rust issues than yours. The frame was rusted out. You made some mistakes and had some incorrect info but so didn't I at that stage. The whole time you were cleaning I was saying "Do that later! Focus on getting the car running first!" But...once again I did the same thing. You just can't help yourself!
Not sure why you were doing so much work under the car with it not up in the air. 🤔 I hate laying on the ground.

Great video, Alex, love you bringing this DeLorean back to life! One thing to consider as you’re putting it back together is the potential for galvanic corrosion when different types of metals are touching-like steel bolts, nuts and washers held tightly against the stainless steel skin. If you truly want this to be your “forever” car, some extra effort to protect these from contacting each other (for the most part) or switching to stainless fasteners might give you some peace of mind. I’m sure DeLorean didn’t do this because of cost, but they also didn’t think that they were building a vehicle that could last 100’s of years. -Don

I love the DeLorean DMC. Such a beutifull car and iconic. And YES, it is 100% a direct reflection of the iconic Back To The Future (1985) movie(s).
Sadly the car was marketed as a "sports-car", but DMC installed a very weak V6 engine in it (V6 PRV engine), and a very odd mixed one as well with engine parts from
Volvo, Renault & Peaugot (?) and somehow this mix would be cheaper then the suggested V6 engine, V6 Cologne from Ford (?). The V6 Ford engine was a heavily reliable engine that was well used and delivered good power and durability. Beside this, many DeLorean owners have through the years complained that the electric work on these are its most common issue of problems related to typhical British poor electric installation craft.
If it is possible to switch V6 engines in this car I don't know, but it would be awesome it it is possible. There must be some good fitting V6 engines that could work (?)
I feel this car truly deserves a better engine with more power and speed.

Spent a few hours in the Delorean ‘factory’ in Houston, about 15 years ago, talking to their VP about Porsche 928’s of all things, of which he just bought 6 of. I was showing how mine was from factory, so he could rebuild the ones he bought.
It was great, they essentially bought everything from the original factory in Ireland. There were rows and rows of Delorean parts, including transmissions, doors, hoods, engines, etc. etc. They had jigs to essentially rebuild the rusty frames (which were just regular steel), where they’d take the original VIN plate and graft it on to the ‘new’ frame/car, to make a new/old/original/restored car.
The cars were ‘cool’. The engines were dogs and they knew it. Low HP but still there was the cool factor. They even had a red painted car, that was much lower in $ than an unpainted stainless car, but someone wanted theirs painted from the factory. Good times and I have lots of pics somewhere. Thanks for doing this series!!!!

Anyways... Great Job, Alex. You have the patience of Job, so to speak. Detailing is a tedious job.
Barn finds are sometimes (maybe usually?) not unlike what you found with this DeLorean.
I once tried to buy a barn find from a local fellow who's shop repaired cars. He found a 72 280SE 4.5 in dark green with palomino leather and low miles. It all ran but needed a tune-up, rebuilt trans and a new diff. The fuel system was cleaned out (another tedious job) and the rear half was resprayed in the factory color. Looked gorgeous and I made an offer, which was generous, but he had just received a call from a buddy in LA (a director) and he wanted it along with a Porsche Speedster. Ugh. We'd still have that car if he had accepted my $7k offer. That was back in 1983.

Love the channel buddy. When I initially saw one of your videos it came after a Mat Armstrong video and it seemed similar so I took a gamble and I’m really glad I did. It was the space van, and your dedication to complex investigation and fearlessness to discovery had me hooked. You, like Mat are always positive and that’s refreshing. Now for my one and only complaint from the myriad videos I’ve watched. It’s pronounced New-Clea-Urr, not New-Cue-Lurr!! You’re too intelligent to ever mess this up again. I mean, you are the one to mention Oppenheimer after all. 😀. And as far as this Delorean is concerned, holy hell I’m pretty sure you got the holy grail of barn finds. I haven’t watched the third video yet, but it’s my guess that this thing is going to clean up to be ridiculously clean and the motor runs, and I’d bet it’s actually in good shape. This car find is truly unheard of, and I’m glad it was you that found it as in a way your experience is our experience. Lookin' good! With the interior all stripped down you can take the opportunity to line as many panels as possible with Dynamat to improve noise insulation. I doubt that was even a consideration when it was initially assembled.

Awesome car! So fun to watch it come back. The thought occurred to me while you were cleaning the interior that you need a steam cleaner. Disinfectant and super clean at the same time with even less product.

@legitstreetcars if you’ve never used turtlewax carpet and interior cleaner I highly recommend it. It comes in green cans. It’s the best stuff I’ve ever used to clean carpets. I’ve used it to get coke stains out of carpet. It turns the stuff to look like new. Pretty crazy stuff. I’ve never even used a drill attachment to agitate it. I’ll have to try that.

The way the headliner cover wraps over the structure, then the trim goes on, is almost the exact same way you'd find a Fiero headliner with a sunroof going in. Guess who forgot to leave the extra material once! *cough*
And that seal you're taking off looks REALLY like generic off the shelf D-seal that we used at a trailer manufacturing place I worked at recently. Should be easy to find.

You definitely had me cringing when you were prying on the T panel. It is possible to remove the headlight assembly without taking the front off. The number with the X on the door is the key code. Overall your doing a good job. Fun fact a lot of the little shims were added when they arrived in the states. The QAC guys used cases of them. If your state allows for it, ditch the original exhaust. VIN 3500

Very good to see your attention to detail and getting EVERYTHING out that could be an issue. That front bumper removal was just nuts. I'm sure they went overboard with the fasteners, and it can be done a lot more efficiently going back together. Same with the grille. The 'retainers' are just bogus. All the furry invaders inside were to be expected I guess, after sitting all those years. At least the wiring survived for the most part. Looking forward to the next episode!!😉👍👍

Yeah that PRV is definitely not a very efficient engine, so even with the relatively light body, it does not surprise me that the DeLorean weren't that good on mileage... maybe the manual could be a little bit better.

Really enjoyed this episode. The Delorean is a fascinating vehicle, and it was particularly interesting seeing it disassembled for restoration. With regard to the engine, please resist the urge to LS-swap it. What would be really cool would be for you to add a period correct twin turbo setup (which DMC was developing as an option, but just ran out of time and money before they went bankrupt). This would improve the power issue tremendously, and keep in the spirit of the original car. Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing the next segment.

    • @Frank-Thoresen
      @Frank-Thoresen 11 місяців тому

Replacing the original engine and transmission with a modern boosted V6 with a strong transmission would have been so great. The original engine should be kept in dry storage. I don't think swapping with a LS is good as the sound and look is totally different from the original engine.
