We All love the cliff flag
James is an endless pit of riffs and Lars is a master of putting them in place. So amazing to see them construct a song.
It's just a musical combination that clicks, nothing else just does not.. Kappa
It's amazing to see them construct a garbage song? Metallica havent written anything good since 1985.
@@ash8298 Holy shit you are ignorant
@@ash8298 Thats a riff of truth
Wait, you find Puppets garbage?
Lars speaks a language only James can understand. That duo is just really good at trusting and understanding each other in the creative process. It seems so easy but it is very difficult for someone to just keep throwing riffs and breaks and bridges while trusting that the drummer is starting to piece it together in his mind.
lars is a fucking genius arranger
@@gnoogie Then why are the songs garbage?
@@ash8298 which ones?

Lars only ate once in a 9 minute video. I'm impressed.
But he had to talk while eating. Classic Lars
At least he's not using the 3000$ couch as a napkin......AGAIN
Twice
And only one arm massage!
Seriously? That's what you took away from this video?.....man get the fuck outta here let the real metalheads review the video
I've come to truly respect Lars for his compositional skills, People rag on him for not "writing" music, and 'humming', and then there's the drummer jokes, but He's got serious skills as a song composer, and that in itself is an art. if you dont have good composition, the notes themselves are flat, and will always fall short. Metallica is, was and always will be the sum of ALL its parts. Best fkn band ever.
See my biggest problem with metallica has always been their song arrangements, I think their songs are good inspite of the arrangements rather than because of them.
A track like spit out the bone has a great main riff, surrounded by 6 minutes of nonsense.
St anger was bad not just because of the production- some of the songs had cool riffs but the arrangements were absolutely insane with a truly ridiculous amount of repetition.
Any band james played guitar in would have been a massive success, I dont think the same is true of lars at all.
People laugh at his humming but he came up with and hummed the intro for Ride the Lightning
I love that Metallica literally documents everything they do. Not many bands do that
It's called marketing

Most musicians: Study theory and use it to compose your music. It’s the only way.
Metallica: WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH GUH GUH GUH
KKK and still sound good haahha
You'd be surprised how many of the biggest bands in history never studied music theory. It's not a necessity at all.
Jacques Nomdefamille that’s the joke
hahaha that's the way you do it
@@Jack655321 Yeah, but it helps a lot
I feel this album process was like "James and me are the band, kirk one and play the solos, Robert come and do what you have to do".
Alex Nv that's how it's always been pretty much
Guess what? That's the way it has always been. James and Lars share the leadership.
I know, but I though this could be like Death Magnetic's process
In my band it was the same thing... i'm the come and do what you have to... -.-
Metallica's career in a nutshell
Love how Lars just conducts things - sitting on the sofa organising and composing so much. I think that’s his other real value he can contribute so much even if his drumming isn’t what it was
You nailed it. There's a reason him and Hetfield write the majority of the music, Hetfield is a goddamn wizard with riffs and Lars knows how to arrange songs to be their most effective. Definitely a great song writing duo.
He is a mastermind of maneging the band as a company as well, marketing ideas, design ideas, strategies for tours, recordings, music videos, since the beginning of the band he is the brain that put Metallica on top of the world.
I love how in every clip where Lars is talking, James is riffing like he's trying to ignore Lars.
I like how every loser on the internet has to interpret any little thing without knowing shit.
@@magnumdong8437 way to fucking true
Imagine being able to play guitar and still listen to someone else talk at the same thing. This foreign concept called “multitasking” that most people are able to do.
He's actually listening to Lars, because Lars is the one arranging the song and helping James write his parts.
@@HarrisonBowman someone finally gets it!
I love their studio. Feels so comfortable.
7:15 after all those years, Lars had the chance to see how wah-wah works.

Rob has really proved himself as a bassist, he filled the shoes and put his own stamp on the Metallica sound, now he's definitely one of my favs!

The dude is super youthful in spirit. Love the guy.
If Kirk is a teenager then James and Robert are his parents and Lars is the creepy uncle.

The riff's in this song is EPIC...👍
This riffs in this song are so freaking good. Best they’ve done in a looong time.
I love when Lars is trying to pump the wah for Kirk and he finds how delicate that action is to do in tempo, and that's not even while you are actually playing! Kirk just moves closer to him as if to say "see? it IS hard what I do for you guys!!" :)

James and Lars have a secret language and way of communicating and it's fascinating to watch these legends put it all together.
1) I love the random things James does when he’s recording/figuring out vocals
2) I really hope they call the cat Metallicat or something
Lars has one beautiful brain! i love how their relationship is, its so perfect! these guys aren't stopping anytime soon!
GenSul bruh
I am biased but the EET FUK guitar still sounds the best!
JAFO-PTY what does eet fuk mean?
Nick Paquette yes
Eet is name of Indonesian Guitarist Eet Syahrani....they were admire n hate each other. Because eet says eddie van halen is the god guitar and kirk is nothing.
It's Justice and Black album guitar for a reason!
or maybe it's just EAT FUCK misspelled, but hey, cool story I guess.
This was a great insight into their process, and luckily it’s a great song, not just some filler. I had always wondered how Lars contributed to the songwriting without playing a melodic instrument. He’s just effective at communicating what he hears in his head and James trusts his input. They’ve sustained their entire career on that partnership. The Lennon-McCartney of metal.
I love how Metallica has “making of’s” videos it’s amazing

Riffs are swapped between songs a lot during recording. That one looks like they came up with it for Moth originally, and decided later it fit Spit better. Keywords being "looks like", I obv have no fucking idea. 100% from Spit though, good pickup!

6:14 it’s nice to see James playing one of his really old guitars from 1986
Its actually from justice tour he got it in 1989 or late 1988 so yeah its the coolest guitar if you ask me
He got that Mx220 "EET FUK" back in 1987
I love watching how these come together, and you can see the difference from early in the song's development to the fine tuning late.
Lars trying to use Kirks wah is hilarious!! He's stamping on it like a spider!!

Death Magnetic was a step in the right direction. Hardwired is amazing with the mixture of the albums they had. It felt Black,Justice,Kill, Load in many songs and I loved it. Why am I not surprised this is how they put a song together. It's more than likely how they've always done it but instead of a garage, they're in their own studio. They may be older and not thrash anymore but damn if they still can't put out some really good stuff. Say what you want about Lars but dude has just got a talent for arranging different pieces into into a finished product. They were my band at 14 years old and they still are at 50. People told me I'd outgrow this but they got me this far, might as well ride this out till the end.

I love seeing how these guys know what sells and what doesn't. To create art that resonates til the end of time is very interesting. Id love to know how they all view creation and how it evolved from a young age until now, since that's essentially the motor of their monster.
