This is a mature band that has worked harder than any other and rose to conquer the entire world. They wrote 5 of the best metal albums of all time before they were 30. However, if they didn't have such a huge past, nobody would sign and market this newer stuff. Trust me, the early stuff is so freaking original and extremely kick ass. I know, I was around then
I'm getting ready for the Metallica concert in Miami, just the best band ever. I saw them the last time 8 years ago at the Panther's Stadium here in Florida and since the black album I think this is one of the best albums they have made. Keep rocking guys!!!!! See you on July 7th!!!!
now that you mention the judas kiss that's one of my favorite metallica songs, hardwired it's a great album and maybe with more from kirk this would've been even better
Not sure what was happening with the guy resting his hand on the bridge of Rob's bass. If you want that muted effect just stick a piece of foam under the strings there.
11:52 I guess you've made it when you get your own personal "Bass Guitar String Muter." I wonder if that guy is the equivalent of the adult film industry "fluffer." Hey guy, what do you do for a living? I'm a bass guitar string muter.
There is a thing called a Jimmi Clip that goes on the string behind the bridge and the nut to mute overtones... but when you're metal gods, you can just hire an actual Jimmy. Lmao
The holding instruments to prevent noises thing reminds me of the time I was an assistant in a studio and had to hold a cymbal stand during a take because it had a bad resonance on that particular song for some reason it worked out great but I had to crouch there for three or four takes
38:49 that whole sequence of James/Lars is a perfect example of why Metallica is successful. The open communication and musicianship used to "solve the problem" is fascinating and awesome to watch
For the 'Kirk is the weakest link" comments: Obviously the brief demos of solos on the BTS are rough, and don't really work. Hence why they're different on the record, he absolutely rips on each song. That's like saying "James' vocals and lyrics suck here'. Does he play AS great live anymore, no, but I bet only 1% in the comments could still ever match him. Is he the greatest guitarist of all time, no. Is he as involved in the writing process as James and Lars, no, but its really never been that way. These guys are each what makes Metallica what they are. Without Kirk you wouldn't have some damn iconic riffs. Trapped Under Ice (verse), Creeping Death (Die), Master (I don't remember which part), Enter Sandman (The main fucking one), Bleeding Me (interlude). Not to mention the solo's nobody complains about from the glory days. I really hate fair-weather fans of a band that makes music for themselves, and not you, so that doesn't even make sense. Don't be ignorant, long live Metallica
I have no questions, but statements. When Metallica was changing their sound, (as well as in years they weren't active) I gravitated towards other bands. And I'm so glad that I did because there's so much awesome Metal out there to be discovered!
It's such a blessing that we get to see behind the scenes footage of a huge band like this. I hate social media and the effect it has on people, but man . . . sometimes I wish they had the stuff we have now back in the 70s, so we could see high quality footage like this of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Motörhead.
people have been saying stuff like this since the Napster days. If you are young, just as the others were in the past, you too will be older, and your comments will simply have excuses to why you say stuff related to age, as if old age is deserved and not going to happen to you
When even haters bother to click and comment on a MetallicA video, you know how great their impact is on music world. You love them or hate them, but you can't ignore them. They're stuck in your head forever.
What I like about this band and their writing process is how open the members are with each other regarding their parts. Each member scrutinizes or analyzes the others parts and tells them if it sucks or if it’s great. No one seems to take shit personally. Nothing is rushed. They work threw everything which is cool. No egos in this band. Amazing what an absence of alcohol does for a group of musicians. All you Lars haters should go back to school. The guys a fucking legend.
I would give my life to live these guy’s life for a month! And they have been living it this whole time! I’m 43 and I was probably 12 when I got And Justice For All and it changed me life. It just amazes me that us normal people only dream and wonder what it must be like to be a rich, famous person who gets to play music in exchange for being rich! I just wish I could even survive just from making music! I love that they are still going!
I'm not gonna jump on the I hate lars train. he isint the best or worst drummer I've heard. he comes across as a total prick here same as some kinda monster. I admire James patients with him but I have to give lars credit he is totally involved in the arrangements of their songs and is never afraid to tell James to try this or that. great to see them getting on well I'm not a metallica fan but respect some of the great work they have done at times. And from this video it's clear to all the lars haters that the man is a huge part in creating metallicas music.
I don't think Lars is nearly as much of a prick as he used to be. I think he's pretty chill now. He's just super annoying sometimes. But, hey, he's the man with a vision.
Sorry, but did you miss the parts in some kind of monster where the band was literally falling apart at the seems, Jason had just left the band, James was in a really dark place in his life with his drinking and his marriage falling apart, Kirk was freaking out about it all. Oh and never mind that they were paying a video crew thousands of dollars to document the making of the album which they had due out soon as well as prepping for the concert tour for it, and paying a shrink thousands more to help the band sort their shit out, that didn't seem to be helping one bit. Lars is not only the timekeeper that keeps that band together while they are playing, but he was also literally doing his damnedest to not let the band self-destruct, which it seemed hell-bent on doing despite his efforts. Oh and nevermind that Napster thing, which was destroying the music industry, that was still hanging like a black cloud over his head. I don't know about you, but that is a lot of pressure to put on one man, and expecting him to not get frustrated and lose his shit from time to time.
Same here pretty much.... Always thought his ego was hella bigger than his drumming skills. But in his older age he seems a lot better than he used to be. A few weeks ago i watched the big 4 doc from 5-6 years ago and was actually amazed at how nice he was during fan meet and greets. He had people smiling during the interaction the whole time.
So, in your own words "I'm not a Metallica fan but..." you still have an opinion which is cool and valid, I just find your point of adding that you're NOT a fan interesting!! 🤔🤘😎
Commenting now because from what I've read recently, James stated in an interview that Kirk was dealing with problems of his own during recording and that he'll be back on his terms, when his ready. Probably dealing with alcohol addiction.
oh you metalheads are happy to see this, I love metal, but I'm not considering myself one, but the amount of Info as a musician, Producer, and sound engineering to learns from this is Gold!!

Amazing !!! Someone knows how have they made it to protect their ears after almost 40 years with those levels of noises everyday??? I can't imagine how much level of sound they or each band has to hear every session, specially the drummers. It is very amazing that practicing, jamming, presentations, shows, recordings and more (for don't mention the natural ageing of the body) and ears still there wealthy. It's awesome how even them "Metallica" still refer back to their early originals for future song writing ideas and inspiration! Fuck... they are truly something special
Amazing to watch a MEGA BAND at work!! The inner workings pf the Metallica Machine!! Super cool to look at and hear all the art that went into their recording
I thought that was the reason there wasn't a making of video for Atlas too. Since its video is already an in studio one, they probably felt there wasn't a need for a second studio video of the song.
I don't know how I'd go about getting it, but I NEED that giant black and white Cliff banner that's there. 33 years later and he's still at the heart of the band with his passed on knowledge.

@@coyotejohn3101 metallicas new 6 CD greatest hits album... Lol
See you on July 7th!!!!
this is basically a Lars and James work
just they
Rene_the young dude Gonzale And Robert in a few songs
yeah I know, I wonder how would have this sounded with kirk's ideas
Rene_the young dude Gonzalez like Death Magnetic, that album was 40% Kirk's riffs, 20% Rob's riffs and 40% James's riffs
Rene_the young dude Gonzalez The Judas Kiss was write by Kirk totally
now that you mention the judas kiss that's one of my favorite metallica songs, hardwired it's a great album and maybe with more from kirk this would've been even better
Let Trujillo loose for a couple tunes. Bring some of that Suicidal vibe.
Yeh, he must love being in Metallica bit imo he's really held back with the amount of skill he has.
or an Infectious Grooves break then JAM!
Totally agree, would be nice to hear Metallica pick up some of that old school punk/thrash vibe again
AGREED! Maybe get Bob Rock to come back in to make them groove again too lol
Metallica is burned out. But they themselves are in denial.
24:45
LARS: Finally finds out the you need to cick the wah to go off ....."Thats F*cking hard"!!!
KIRK: "Ya dude, that's my job!" lmao
Nice to see Kirk playing Gary Moore's Guitar! Greeny
Peter Greene's guitar!
1:28:10 Finally James just sings the lyrics he always wanted.
4:19 Lars is almost about to explode.
Its at 4:20 actually so I guess he went 420 blaze it 😂👌
He puts full force into those drums
I was watching this in Spanish class, I was kicked out for laughing
James and lars write the songs
Kirk just recycles solos
Rob gets 3 people to play his bass
Ha! Robs a great bassist though
Not sure what was happening with the guy resting his hand on the bridge of Rob's bass. If you want that muted effect just stick a piece of foam under the strings there.
James is the riff master, don't evan argue.
Even*
24:22 after 35 years in Metallica, Lars learns how a wah pedal works XD
Someone needs to tell Lars that he looks like Beetlejuice and needs to just shave his head already. LOL
HA! Shit, that's awesome!!! Say his name three times and his hair falls out.
LOL. I SEE IT!!!
Why won't he get a hair transplant? Look at Elon Musk, he was bald as fuck but now nobody can even tell.
He looks like dip revived as a drummer
His hair left the band , IT LEFT THE FAHKING BAND!!!
11:52 I guess you've made it when you get your own personal "Bass Guitar String Muter." I wonder if that guy is the equivalent of the adult film industry "fluffer." Hey guy, what do you do for a living? I'm a bass guitar string muter.
Almost as good as Lars's arm massager.
There is a thing called a Jimmi Clip that goes on the string behind the bridge and the nut to mute overtones... but when you're metal gods, you can just hire an actual Jimmy. Lmao
Almost as good as snare tuner on st. Anger era
For the 'Kirk is the weakest link" comments:
Obviously the brief demos of solos on the BTS are rough, and don't really work.
Metallica is life no questions
I have no questions, but statements. When Metallica was changing their sound, (as well as in years they weren't active) I gravitated towards other bands. And I'm so glad that I did because there's so much awesome Metal out there to be discovered!
I agree with you Metallica is life probably your a Die Hard fan like me
Lars is looking like with Billy Crystal
Lars plays 1 bar...
cool, thank you.
Pro-Tools
DONE
It's such a blessing that we get to see behind the scenes footage of a huge band like this. I hate social media and the effect it has on people, but man . . . sometimes I wish they had the stuff we have now back in the 70s, so we could see high quality footage like this of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Motörhead.
45:32 is the creation of the best riff ever!!!
I would buy this if it were a Blu-ray.
Laserdisk all the way
Lars just looks like an angry old man. I can imagine him being at home and yelling at kids to get off of his lawn.
haha so true!
"Get off moi focking lawn"
God damnit I’m gonna be having dreams about that and just struggling to sleep because I can’t stop laughing at that image in my head 🤣
or his kit!!!!
people have been saying stuff like this since the Napster days.
I grew up in the 80s & 90s when they ruled the world..they will always be a part of me
James Hetfield using the same mic that Micheal Jackson used to record Thriller! Love you James, always have always will!
Shure SM7B 😉
ThrillErAHHH, HeAyAH.
METALLICA ROCKS AWESOME METAL BAND 30 YEARS AND STILL GOING I AM 52 AND STILL ROCKING TO METALLICA
.:[[ 1:38:41 ]:. The moment Metallica made the world a better place. (:
I can’t get past how strange it looks for Hetfield to be wearing a backwards hat and sandals!
9:39 those sandals are not acceptable
Lars bro shave that head LOL
Daniel Baugher in a seriously wierd way i prefer his hairline being nine kilometers back on his noggin that if the geezer was totally chromedomed
Why should he bow to some ridiculous notion of how he "should" look as dictated by some goon in a UA-cam comment section?
You can say what ever you want about Metallica , they made such incredible music .....
I love all the behind the scenes stuff on how songs actually come to fruition. Keep up the great work buddy 👍
Greta to see Lars and James working together so well. The album shows.
Kirk is already just a guest member or what?? The guy didn't say a word in the whole recording sessions...
Total exaggeration
@Περικλής Σίμος, I've heard lars say that, and that's pretty childish....in my opinion.
Commenting now because from what I've read recently, James stated in an interview that Kirk was dealing with problems of his own during recording and that he'll be back on his terms, when his ready. Probably dealing with alcohol addiction.
Love the Volbeat T-Shirt on James :-) He knows what good music is....
Do you think any music will come out as Tripple-xls(like the movie)?
I have not tried any good music that fits my ears snuggly
oh you metalheads are happy to see this, I love metal, but I'm not considering myself one, but the amount of Info as a musician, Producer, and sound engineering to learns from this is Gold!!
lol at the dude muting the strings for him.
James always looks like he is tuning Lars out. LOL.
LonghornInRaiderland I noticed that too. I wonder why that is
That's because he is. \m/
@@TheAceOfSpades1980 I plugged myself into the main cunt once , only wished I used a fork insead of my own gear.. Hope Lars remembers it ... Blew my sockets off with that one..
Ohh well. I remember the times when Dave Cunt invented the spider riff, he has such main-cunt regality that destroys lars's main cunt.. sigh
23:13 the best guitar ever(EET FUK)
I ask because it's rare watch them wearing ears protections, that's it.
I know it has to be tedious to spend days, weeks and months to record an album, but when it's condensed down to 90 minutes or so, its' fascinating.
Do people realise that Lars is a co-writer on almost every Metallica song? At least every one from this album. That's makes him one of the great metal writers. Do 5 minutes research idiots who troll Lars
It's written in his contract. No effort required.
Greatest Metal writers from the 80's and early 90's... Metallica since has been generic at best.... Generic.
Lars got brains n talent.
Not as a drummer
Sit down, Lars, and let the guitarists do their fucking job!
You're in the zone of it getting too fast?
Too fast?
What the hell?! This is Metallica! This is thrash!!
I cringed
The power may not be the same. At a certain point, it'll sound real sloppy.
Yeah there's still a thing called a tempo, and they need to match said tempo.
Yep, fire him.
Every band I've been in or helped in the studio I've always told..SIMPLE IS RUTHLESS..
Only missing "Atlas, Rise!"
yes, it's not exist
Vl1dimir 777 because?
i think because they already have videoclip "Atlas, Rise!" and in this clip we can see studio footage - i think by this logic its dont exist
I thought that was the reason there wasn't a making of video for Atlas too. Since its video is already an in studio one, they probably felt there wasn't a need for a second studio video of the song.
Juan Rezende No missing 2 from the actual album itself, and the bonus LOS so 3 songs
I swear Lars has been eating and toothpicking in like every video over the last 20 years 😂💀
love metallica.......this is awesome watching you make the album...well done
It deserves credits the producer as well ,fantastic studio ,equipment and producer.
I don't know how I'd go about getting it, but I NEED that giant black and white Cliff banner that's there. 33 years later and he's still at the heart of the band with his passed on knowledge.
I didn't know John Lithgow played drums.....
or his body double, Artie Lange
I've been saying he looks like John Lithgow since the 80's. I'm glad someone else finally noticed
😆😆
I thought it was Louis CK looking for a new gig.
lol it is
Mom " fine one more metallica video"
Me "(watch this video)"
25:05 cat in studio
The thing that should NOT be!! I SMELLED cat piss when I saw that! Stuck in a dank studio, stinking ass guys, farting on each other and...cat piss carpet....metal ain't easy! In any event, kudos to the band for a DAMN good album!
Metallicat.
I screamed bc I thought that was so cute HAHA
there are 2 of them)
Session cat
I wish there were videos like this for every Metallica album
Good to see how much work it is to create good recordings. And watch all the administrative work that is done, keeping notes because so much is happening. It is one big team that are creating great stuff.
I must be the only person to think that Load and Reload were awesome albums, with well written great songs! People say they fell after the black album but those two albums were badass!
enharmonic77 not the only one
