Can't believe it only took an hour and 48 minutes to make this album, amazing
ziMikeyy you're dumb it took way more
@Brandon: You're right, it's 1:48:53s so the last minute should have been rounded up to 1hr 49min
Brandon Ceballos You aren't too quick are you?
Brandon Ceballos well, that told me...
Ash Damn it! You're correct thanks for pointing that out for me. ;)
Producer “is the guitar going to play the solo, or are you going to play the solo?”. Kirk “is there a difference?”
Spoken like a true guitarist. Love it
lmao shut up
44:32
@@minnesotajames1 tnx for the timestamp
Greg Fieldman: “Is the guitar going to play the solo, or are you going to play the solo?”
Kirk: "GREG... I AM THE GUITAR !!"
Spoken like a guitarist who ironically didn't come prepared w shit on this album
We need a documentary with what Kirk does with the other 90 percent of his time.
Pretty sure it's spankin' the monkey to old horror films and comic books and playing with an ouija board.
tribunation laughed at this.
@@abelstrd Bahahaha!!! Funny.
he learns the notes in between that are fucking w him
He lives in Hawaii and loves surfing
Music is not about how fast and technical you can be, how amazing you are at your instrument. This is what you practice and get good at. Making albums and songs is what a band is. Some people have it in them, some don't. That's why it doesn't matter if Lars or any of them suck. They left a legacy of songs behind them that will last forever. You can take the best musicians in the world, most technical and they will never make music like Metallica did. That being said, band is about synergy, vision, story, composing. Cheers
Lars should start his own toothpick line.
Steve Sands Drumpicks!
George Marko lol, the dude's always got a toothpick in his mouth.
made from broken drumsticks....
MySpace between my teeth official toothpick
Off-birch
This is a mature band that has worked harder than any other and rose to conquer the entire world. They wrote 5 of the best metal albums of all time before they were 30. They've taken their music to places unheard of in the metal world and continue doing what they do, masterfully, how they want to do it. They've inspired and influenced countless amazing musicians that continue to give us great music. It's great...they've come full circle and are finally influencing THEMSELVES instead of everyone else! You can hear them reference their other albums in this. They have nothing to prove anymore. As a musician inspired by these guys I love to see them enjoying life and doing their thing. They've EARNED it. They've EARNED our respect and I for one will never lose the love for this band of brothers making music.
Chris Williamson 1 year later and your comment still stands.
First 5 albums were ground breaking it can't be argued. Since then...? Hardwired is their best since Ride The Lightning in my opinion of course.
You nailed it ...
I agree entirely!
@vDosc UV7 soooo? They should quit playing music/creating art, because they're older? Or they're too old, so put away the guitars and drums? I don't understand what you're saying. I get it that you don't like their last...idk 7, 8 albums....so that's why they should quit? Please, enlighten us all. What is the proper age to stop making art? Music, painting, writing, etc..
I appreciate the fact that not even Lars knows the names of the songs of St Anger... 12:45
Dont remember any snare hit of that era.
Lmfao!
19:55 - "I like guh-guh-guh-guh....but....gotta get back in guh-guh shape."
Yup. Me, too.
Lol I thought that was hilarious.
Out of all ppl to get a tired hand downpicking
That was hilarious! It's so easy to forget that these guys are in their mid to late 50's. Hell, Kirk is pushing 60! They ain't kids anymore. And they still rock!
i like that James used his kill em all guitar
Pretty bad ass
Kirk was using Greenie.
I dont think that was the legit one because remember their stuff was stolen in 84
@@Onthew4y Cliff's Alembic Spoiler bass, James' Jose modded JMP Marshall, and I think Lars' drumset were all that were stolen to my understanding. That's the original Electra V here. Cliff's Rickenbacker 4001 bass and Kirk's black Gibson V from the KEA days are still around.
I preffer watching this than a normal movie.
Good to see Bruce Banner taking time out of the Avengers to produce a Metallica album.
Ha, awesome!
That brought some much needed discipline to Metallica recording sessions, because you don't want to make producer angry!
I know im young and im only 16 but i think the reason i love James Hatfield and Metallica so much is that James reminds me of my dad before he got super religious. They still are allot alike but James is just the epitome of him and i miss it. i miss my old dad. I still love him with all my heart he's just not what he used to be. But hes a better man.
I never lived in the Era of Metallica but when i think of them and watch there shows i just get this nostalgic feeling like i was there and like lived through it. It makes me feel at home and comfortable watching all there shows from the 1990s and 80s. I dont understand why but i just feel so out of place everywhere i go. Like i dont belong in this Era. and listening to there Music and Watching them play makes me feel like..i dont know..i dont know how to describe the feeling but its defiantly good. Metallica just feels like a family to me. They remind me of my family the way these guys act. maybe thats it.Maybe thats why they make me feel at home. They feel like a second family i never had (yeah i know there all guys but they all signify somebody in my family) i know this is all very very weird and none of you have probably ever had this feeling but i just felt like voicing my thoughts because i felt like i just figured everything out.
Now your probably saying that most of you honestly dont care about this but i know like only 5 people will read this so.

I am way older than you are. I lived through their prime, and have to say it was the best time ever. It was different for me back then, cos I’m this Asian female who loves only Metallica and no other can ever replace that. They had really cool present back then, James singing vocal, the lyrics itself, the drums, the riffs, the bass, everything was phenomenal. I always listen to their older albums cos they created very unique genre that makes me ask for more. I might not know how you feel, cos we are different, but I do understand the feeling that you don’t belong anywhere, cos I still do. For me, it is like every time I go out, I feel like I want to hurry run my errands and get back home, I don’t feel like mixing with anyone for too long, cos I tend to judge that no one gets me, or I’m just this weirdo. It’s like I look totally normal on the outside, I can get along with people ok, but inside, it’s kinda bursting. You just wanna be elsewhere and not thinking of anything. That is when Metallica music helps, for me, their older albums makes me go to sort of unknown journey, drown in the rhythm, and your mind is just going to some imaginary land, make peace with life, with who you are and don’t care about this messy world, and to me that is awesome. If there is time machine, those era is total epic. And if you are on the same page as I am, you are not alone. Their music in 80s and 90s surely are saviour of my soul. That’s my thought.
As long as "super religious" doesn't mean he's going to strap explosives to himself and walk into an embassy, it's ok.
Your expressing emotions that's what Metallica does with every song......enjoy it!!!
1:39:00
Lars may not be the best drummer, but the guy has vision and knows song structure.
Whatever fanboy.
He sure knows Protools.
I've been a Metallica fan for over 30 years, and never knew the extent to which he was a part of the arrangements of their songs. Redemption! \m/ \m/
Nope, He doesn't. soo many songs are all over the shop! nothing simple anymore!
I agree scarsunseen. very influential though, as a drummer myself I can say that he is not the most skilled but he has given us a great, great sound, particularly on the ballads.
It's cool to see the communication between James and Lars. Lars doesn't play guitar, but they bounce ideas off of each other in a language only they understand. It's really cool to see the guys having fun in this process.
Lol, after 30+ years of making music James still calls it a "bendy thing"
That's 30 years of crap music
@@WilliamTONeil-tn3fm Yeah, you're a fool who can't play a damn Metallica lick to save your life. Keep your fool mouth shut.
@@WilliamTONeil-tn3fm Where is your masterpiece?
@@WilliamTONeil-tn3fm Someone tried to play Metallica but failed and is angry
Not being able to play like Metallica doesn't mean you're not allowed to criticize them, what a dumb argument
Be nice if more bands showed how they record. It's not like it's a guarded bit of intel, it is just interesting to see the various ways albums and songs come together through the creative process of individuals.
Maaan... my heart melts as I see these old fucks still having so much fun :')
Brokkoli7hun me too
+Hellenic Macedonian mature?
They're old.
Nick the memory remains
... and the recorded audios
Andrew Mitchell maiden are older Judas Priest are older acdc are older Saxon lots of bands are older
+James Evans nobody is saying who's older than who.
The fact remains the guys of Metallica are old as stated by the original user that commented.
would love to click on something about Metallica jjust once and not read a bunch of negative shit about them, there music,or Lars and his drumming. If you dont like Metallica why are you watching this?
Brian Davis Because some of us have grown up with this band. They changed the way i lived and breed music since i was 12 in 87. it's my fucking right as a human being and put hours upon hours into the band to critisis when they make sloppy bad songs. But the new record is their best since Justice in my opinion.
Tbf, Lars has said himself he's not a talented drummer and doesn't consider himself to be up there with the best. So I ignore the comments other people make.
@@unsainted333 He was excellent in his prime and honestly he seems like a fucking cool person.
@@TC-lk2ev
He was innovative. Not excellent. Sloppy and innovative. My guess is that he has never played to a metronome.
11DNA11 and what have u done? 😂😂😂😂😂 NOTHING
I play mainly classical music and don't listen to Metallica, I own nothing they ever did - but I would NEVER disrespect them and the sheer volume of works, their work ethic and unshakeable belief in spreading music across all divides. People who have issues with musicians who play something different to them need to look a bit closer. Yes - the EARNED everything - often just slogging through the hard times. What an inspiration to any musician of any style. An Opera signer, for example, should have the work ethic this band has...we all should.
The genre is irrelevant. Music would be that little bit more grey if these guys weren't here.
Will B thank you for being open minded
Exactly...
Well said ✌️
Lars needs to stop holding on to those 46 hairs he has left on his head and break out the razor.
I dont get this comments. First its with him, if he likes that hair. Second If I remember he already shaved his hair a bunch of times through the years , it's not like he's holding his long hair for 30 years
with the hat he looks ok
Joeysixtysix thats fucking mean :(
At this moment, it stands at 32.
These guys really seem like they're in a good place right now. This album was amazing, and has me real optimistic about the next one.
Adam Hinesley If there is a next one
Adam Hinesley I heard that they're gonna remaster Ride the Lightning album and do another tour of that album
ClockAngel Vlogs Thatd be fucking epic on some many levels.l!
Watch the St Anger documentary, then watch this one. They're in such a better place right now, personally and musically.
Way too much snare.
Goddamn, lars' drumming is fucking solid in this record, and I thoroughly enjoyed most of kirk's solos. It's a great album overall; I really love it!
yeah man great album and great producers helping them make it, every song is great man. Lars in not putting bad song on album, love hardwired, pure hard rock/metal and pure music.
It’s quite the honor to see the creative process from behind the scenes. Thank you. What a dream it would be to be an onlooker, there, watching and experiencing it all. =)❤️
Lars is a goddamn beast when it comes to recording in the studio. Man this guy really owns with his all. He plans,he analyzes and he gives the main ideas of these songs exactly after James's riffs'. It's the reason their songs are more catchy then all the other bands . Huge respect
Lars looks like he lives in a hollowed out tree.
ok that made me laugh
Spirit Level Studios hahahahaha
he live in a van down by the river eating goverment cheese!!!
Well maybe if Napster didn’t rob them of all of that money he could afford a house!
yep, and its his head
Making of black album was epic, making of load was ok, making of death magnetic is cool but this shit here is just unique to watch.
Hell yeah! Black was epic!
yeah the 2 1/2 years in the life of Metallica ia an Epic Vid
I love all the behind the scenes stuff on how songs actually come to fruition. Keep up the great work buddy 👍
Great doc! Highlight (and probably overlooked)....James and Lars work their asses off, changes, corrections etc....Rob builds the bass; stops;starts....THEN....Kirk just walks in, lays out absolutely killer shreds goes home!....."Kirk adding something" (its like the hockey coaches saying "what do we do with the goalie??")..that's respect!... Kirk is the GOAT!
That second attempt at the 'Now That We're Dead' solo by Kirk sounded like some Justice For All shit right there!
Was thinking the same thing...
Open Vein yeah blackend
I wish they would have kept it. Maybe change a few parts but 95% of that solo was old Kirk in a nutshell.
When?
No Wah Wah.
James plays rhythm guitar like its nothing. Amazing.
Its is extremely simplistic rhythm..
It's is..
he just uses the same riffs over and over.
@@brianmelendy9844 uhhhmmmmmm have you ever listened or played to any Metallica? I've played probably 70 of their songs on rythym and no two riffs are the same 🤦♂️
15:34 Lars, what is your sexual preference?
With so many incredible drumming virtuosos in every Metallica video comment section, one would think there would be nothing but amazing influential bands selling records like hot bread. Weird how it isn't so...
There's nothing like watching your local cover band playing Enter Sandman in some half empty bar, and the drummer is smiling from ear to ear because... he plays it better than Lars. Adorable!
Lars is still a shit drummer. You should AT LEAST be able to play your own songs and he can't.
@@Pauly421 Don't listen. Bb now.
29:45 - 30:16 Lars on beast mode! You can tell he was feeling the heaviness!!
I'm getting ready for the Metallica concert in Miami, just the best band ever. I saw them the last time 8 years ago at the Panther's Stadium here in Florida and since the black album I think this is one of the best albums they have made. Keep rocking guys!!!!! See you on July 7th!!!!
James is the riff master, don't evan argue.
Even*
The language of teamwork….accentuates the contributions of the individuals in proportion to each the others interpretations and talent………..of which you guys possess much ………!
Great video…….
Metallica is life no questions
I have no questions, but statements. When Metallica was changing their sound, (as well as in years they weren't active) I gravitated towards other bands. And I'm so glad that I did because there's so much awesome Metal out there to be discovered!
I agree with you Metallica is life probably your a Die Hard fan like me
love that they are cool enough to share the writing process.....
Don't have a choice
Would have loved to have seen a making of ....And Justice for all
WARWEAPONX would’ve loved too see what Jason’s reaction was to the bass
dooweemama lmao
drums and lead guitar up!!!! But...DOIT!
Lars keeps eating stuff lol
I noticed that too. Lars eats a lot of food in the studio.
He does need to shave the head finally, though.
Newsflash bub: humans need to eat to stay alive.
Drummers bun a lot of callers
That explains the big gut.
Drummers burn calories,try doing a 8,10 or even 12 hour studio session ... It's full on !!
1:28:10 Finally James just sings the lyrics he always wanted.
I really don't get the hate on Lars. Look at him! He's amazing!
This is great! Thank you for posting. Veru inspiring. Cant wait till after work!
Good to see how much work it is to create good recordings. And watch all the administrative work that is done, keeping notes because so much is happening. It is one big team that are creating great stuff.
The holding instruments to prevent noises thing reminds me of the time I was an assistant in a studio and had to hold a cymbal stand during a take because it had a bad resonance on that particular song for some reason it worked out great but I had to crouch there for three or four takes
love metallica.......this is awesome watching you make the album...well done
oh you metalheads are happy to see this, I love metal, but I'm not considering myself one, but the amount of Info as a musician, Producer, and sound engineering to learns from this is Gold!!
44:34 "Is the guitar going to play the solo; or are you going to play the solo"? -Kirk "Is there a difference"? Wow!!! Legendary!!🤘
45:32 is the creation of the best riff ever!!!
Lars is starting to look like a homeless guy you'd see in central park yelling at the ants.
Not that I have room to talk!😆
Lars plays 1 bar...
cool, thank you.
Pro-Tools
DONE
24:45
LARS: Finally finds out the you need to cick the wah to go off ....."Thats F*cking hard"!!!
KIRK: "Ya dude, that's my job!" lmao
this is basically a Lars and James work
just they
Rene_the young dude Gonzale And Robert in a few songs
yeah I know, I wonder how would have this sounded with kirk's ideas
Rene_the young dude Gonzalez like Death Magnetic, that album was 40% Kirk's riffs, 20% Rob's riffs and 40% James's riffs
Rene_the young dude Gonzalez The Judas Kiss was write by Kirk totally
now that you mention the judas kiss that's one of my favorite metallica songs, hardwired it's a great album and maybe with more from kirk this would've been even better
Nice to see Kirk playing Gary Moore's Guitar! Greeny
Amazing to watch a MEGA BAND at work!! The inner workings pf the Metallica Machine!! Super cool to look at and hear all the art that went into their recording
Let Trujillo loose for a couple tunes. Bring some of that Suicidal vibe.
Yeh, he must love being in Metallica bit imo he's really held back with the amount of skill he has.
or an Infectious Grooves break then JAM!
Totally agree, would be nice to hear Metallica pick up some of that old school punk/thrash vibe again
AGREED! Maybe get Bob Rock to come back in to make them groove again too lol
Metallica is burned out. But they themselves are in denial.
I would love too see the recording process on there early records as in KILL'EM ALL RIDE THE LIGHTING and MASTER OF PUPPETS. and then AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. I am sure there's no footage but would be awesome.
Me my opinion Sche didn't have money yet to do it too bad that would be awesome
If you could only go back in time McFly....
Probably the coolest idea I’ve ever heard
Kill'em all probably took 3 days and perhaps their best effort....
Oh hell yeah it would. Especially Master of puppets
1:34:30 "People will headbang!"
Nice to see you guys having fun together
Just nice to see it all just happening, going-on and flowing. Great insight guys. Thank you.
48:58 Sounds like Rob’s planning to leave Metallica to join Slayer. Noodling on some Raining Blood there
Every band I've been in or helped in the studio I've always told..SIMPLE IS RUTHLESS..
Amazing !!! Someone knows how have they made it to protect their ears after almost 40 years with those levels of noises everyday??? I can't imagine how much level of sound they or each band has to hear every session, specially the drummers. It is very amazing that practicing, jamming, presentations, shows, recordings and more (for don't mention the natural ageing of the body) and ears still there wealthy. I ask because it's rare watch them wearing ears protections, that's it.
When even haters bother to click and comment on a MetallicA video, you know how great their impact is on music world. You love them or hate them, but you can't ignore them. They're stuck in your head forever.
James' speaking-voice is awesome.
4:19 Lars is almost about to explode.
Its at 4:20 actually so I guess he went 420 blaze it 😂👌
He puts full force into those drums
I was watching this in Spanish class, I was kicked out for laughing
It deserves credits the producer as well ,fantastic studio ,equipment and producer.
I love how this thing is edited, is so entertaining!
METALLICA ROCKS AWESOME METAL BAND 30 YEARS AND STILL GOING I AM 52 AND STILL ROCKING TO METALLICA
"That's where the most pit starts."
There hasn't been a pit at a Metallica show in decades.
There was a small mosh pit at their show in London this summer when MoP comes on
In Amsterdam there was a mosh pit for MOP
Check latin america
It’s a figure of speech....he didn’t mean it literally!!.....(OY)
Someone would break a hip.
I really enjoy this album. So great to see them all smiling while they work.
It's awesome how even them "Metallica" still refer back to their early originals for future song writing ideas and inspiration! Fuck... they are truly something special
I grew up in the 80s & 90s when they ruled the world..they will always be a part of me
5:52 That's why we're here!
Good Producer. Relaxed and encouraging.
Wow! I honestly hadn't realized until just then that the dudes I jam with and I have a very similar process in writing. ANd with ALL of the studio(joe king)but with more love haha! Always inspired!!!! Thank you for all of the years of Metallica!!
I find the "haters" very interesting. Especially the whole...nothing good since "Justice" or "Puppets" or Mustaine left or Cliff died. At the end of the day, bands with this kind of longevity typically are not writing revolutionary stuff, but songs their true fans like. Rolling Stones, The Who, David Gilmoure, U2, NOFX, Slayer, AC/DC...I could keep going. All of them hit a point that they are releasing songs that the fan base will like, but not much more than that. Then they will sell out every single show they play because they still put on a helluva show and genuinely care about their audience and/or love to perform. Color me one of those "fans" who just like the style Metallica delivers, Load, Re-Load, Death Magnetic, Hardwired all have good songs that I like to listen to. Considering Metallica outsells every other hard rock act by an extremely wide marge (tickets/downloads/albums - statistical fact, not opinion), it's safe to say I'm not alone.
Couldn't have said it better
Amen...people can start calling them old and washed out when they start putting out greatest hits albums and playing casinos.
@@coyotejohn3101 metallicas new 6 CD greatest hits album... Lol
However, if they didn't have such a huge past, nobody would sign and market this newer stuff. Trust me, the early stuff is so freaking original and extremely kick ass. I know, I was around then
Greta to see Lars and James working together so well. The album shows.
Love the Volbeat T-Shirt on James :-) He knows what good music is....
Do you think any music will come out as Tripple-xls(like the movie)?
I have not tried any good music that fits my ears snuggly
What I like about this band and their writing process is how open the members are with each other regarding their parts. Each member scrutinizes or analyzes the others parts and tells them if it sucks or if it’s great. No one seems to take shit personally. Nothing is rushed. They work threw everything which is cool. No egos in this band. Amazing what an absence of alcohol does for a group of musicians. All you Lars haters should go back to school. The guys a fucking legend.
This album turned out great. Love Metallica
I would buy this if it were a Blu-ray.
Laserdisk all the way
Nice that James still uses his original Mesa/Boogie Mark IIc+ from MOP 🤘
love how honest this is. not many band if any, would agree to this
24:22 after 35 years in Metallica, Lars learns how a wah pedal works XD
love this band
+KILLEM43KILLA I got mad love for my bro dog cuz bro bro cuz bro cuz
Am I Savage? is without a doubt the most underrated song on this record. Wish they'd play it live
I would give my life to live these guy’s life for a month! And they have been living it this whole time! I’m 43 and I was probably 12 when I got And Justice For All and it changed me life. It just amazes me that us normal people only dream and wonder what it must be like to be a rich, famous person who gets to play music in exchange for being rich! I just wish I could even survive just from making music! I love that they are still going!
I love these guys so much! Old age won't catch up with you I feel)))
23:13 the best guitar ever(EET FUK)
It's crazy that they're willing to write and structure a song in front of so many people, allowing those other ideas and opinions to influence the song.
So inspiring!💚
Only missing "Atlas, Rise!"
yes, it's not exist
Vl1dimir 777 because?
i think because they already have videoclip "Atlas, Rise!" and in this clip we can see studio footage - i think by this logic its dont exist
I thought that was the reason there wasn't a making of video for Atlas too. Since its video is already an in studio one, they probably felt there wasn't a need for a second studio video of the song.
Juan Rezende No missing 2 from the actual album itself, and the bonus LOS so 3 songs
James and lars write the songs
Kirk just recycles solos
Rob gets 3 people to play his bass
Ha! Robs a great bassist though
Not sure what was happening with the guy resting his hand on the bridge of Rob's bass. If you want that muted effect just stick a piece of foam under the strings there.
One again this metallica film shows that there is a LOT of work behind "even" metal music - and this band (and the producer+technician) obviously strive to have the best quality in all they do. - Regardless of if you like Metallica or not. These guys are experienced hard workers - a stage show seems almost relaxing afterwards..
I wish there were videos like this for every Metallica album
James Hetfield using the same mic that Micheal Jackson used to record Thriller! Love you James, always have always will!
Shure SM7B 😉
ThrillErAHHH, HeAyAH.
11:52 I guess you've made it when you get your own personal "Bass Guitar String Muter." I wonder if that guy is the equivalent of the adult film industry "fluffer." Hey guy, what do you do for a living? I'm a bass guitar string muter.
Almost as good as Lars's arm massager.
There is a thing called a Jimmi Clip that goes on the string behind the bridge and the nut to mute overtones... but when you're metal gods, you can just hire an actual Jimmy. Lmao
Almost as good as snare tuner on st. Anger era
Fuck Yeah!! Love to see these guys going through the creative process with all those music history guitars! James' early eighties Gibson Flying V and Kirk playing on Peter Green & Gary Moore's Gibson Les Paul (worth millions!).
i spot that yerba mate, glad you enjoy it
