    I've been a CFI for over 30 years now and in the last 5 years focused on the CFI certificates. I used to believe that doing your own lesson plans was the way to go, but now I have changed my mind and recommend professionally done lesson plans with one caveat....after practicing and fully understanding the lesson in the plan, then and only then edit them and make them your own. I have found most students today don't have a clue on what content is most important in a lesson plan. some of these commercially available lesson plans are very good and made by experienced CFI's.
    I look at it like this, I can study brain surgery but then to put it in a lesson plan format would be another story! If the CFI applicant is already a teacher, then have at it! I found that some people have the ability to make their own lesson plans while others benefit from professionally done lesson plans. The bottom line is that they have to understand the content and not just memorize the plan. I enjoy your podcast very much!

      considering getting the professionally done one and studying them as well, been reading pros and cons, I know with working full time, studying someone else has it's pluses

      Where can I find those professionally made flight plans?

    Thanks for encouraging CFI’s to remember they are responsible for providing value on each flight. It costs so much to “go out and fly” and not accomplish much. My least favorite CFI once said to me, “let’s go fly to 10,000” in a 172. We did nothing but climb and descend on that lesson and burn about $200 of my money. I didn’t know better to push back.

      LOL me and my instructor did this on a xc because we were both bored. But yeah if that was the whole lesson that's a rip off lol

    And never ever ever let your CFI expire! I made that mistake about 10 years ago when I thought I was done instructing and now that I want to get back into instructing I either need to retake the CFI ride or add another instructor rating to get my CFI back. Arghhh. Never ever ever let it expire 👊

    I wish more CFI applicants applied themselves to teach instead of using the CFI ticket to get to the airlines. I’ve flown with both career CFIs and other CFIs that were hellbent on getting to the airlines. Your learning and progress is sacrificed when you fly with a CFI that wants to get to the airlines. They don’t want to teach. They want to fly Jets. I’m paying a CFI to teach me. My money isn’t a meal ticket until you get an airline slot. And I thank you and other CFIs who are in it to teach.
    First, by the way!

      That is a great point! Ultimately my goal is to reach ATP status. But it is important to take care of students on my journey to the airlines.

    • @davidoneill4859
      @davidoneill4859 3 роки тому +4

      This is a shitty attitude - "meal ticket" is hardly fair. How else is a 19 year old going to get 1,500 hours to qualify for an ATP and get on with an airline unless they instruct. That's the way the industry is organized. There are CFIs out there who are not on an airline track - go find them. This is on you.

    In a few years I will retire as a college professor. My goal is to become a CFI and this was a very informative video. I was wondering if I would be creating new material or using a canned course. This video answered that question. I just passed my AGI and used a number of study guides rather than just 1. Jason I said hi as I walked past your booth at OSH I wish I would have had more time to talk with you about CFI stuff. Your videos are very helpful.

    I would agree, first off, must be passionate about what you do.... All in...
    Second one has to kno first off, if your delivery of instruction is registers with student... If not, give him/ her to another who can reach them... Your goal is their success.ive pick n chose the ones i can reach; and assure their completion. Like you, i always want safe, knowledgeable pilots... Its my need, as we both win. I always got a grade slip from my fed pilot examiners... And expand my knowledge and abilities. And one developes a reputation; with expanding student base...
    All my student shad phase ckecks with eather feds or other senior instructors; i always value there take on student ability. I believe it helps students self confidence in abilities.
    In the end, i get a passing checkride, student get his/her license.... We happy

    A dozen instructors into my PPL and I have yet to see a lesson plan. Pre flight brief? Post flight brief? Hahaha. Maybe a parting statement and see ya next time. Perhaps instructors should put their money where their mouths are. If the students are not your priority, get the hell out of the industry.
