Firing Clay Tools and Harvesting Manzanita Berries

  • I love working with clay that I dig from the Earth around my Hut. This red clay can be formed and fired to make all kinds of useful primitive tools for survival. In this video I fire some recently made clay pieces that can be used as bowls, fishing weights and other uses I have not yet decided. I also test fire a piece made of gray clay that I acquired from the nearby desert.
    I let the pieces burn together in my adobe kiln at the hut for about one hour. While waiting I collect manzanita berries from the species known as “Mission manzanita” (Xylococcus bicolor) which is common in this area. They aren’t as tasty as other species of manzanita but they can be made into a tasty beverage.

    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
    Who films you?
    I do. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything.
    How many cameras do you use?
    Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
    Where is this place?
    In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share exactly where I go.
    Do you workout?
    Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently do collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
    Are you vegan or vegetarian?
    I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).

      @@Coopsterish I share fotos almost every day of what I'm either working on or practicing. It's a good way to get behind the scenes of projects before they are made into UA-cam videos. Many of my videos take several days or weeks to complete a project so Instagram and Facebook allow me to share that way. But I am trying to post more videos more frequently so stay tuned!

    A good job Chad 🙂 Since you probably don't want to build a kiln and also probably have a bunch of holes hanging around... You should trial a clamp style kiln for better firing. Make sure to dry ceramics first in shade, then in sun.... You want no moisture at all otherwise BOOM! 😲 Would love to see more ceramic experiments. I enjoy your hut videos more.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  4 роки тому

      Clamp style kiln??? I have no idea what that is but I'll investigate... The bowls that I fired had dried for a couple months. Do you think if there is just a little humidity in the air that could cause them to break?

    • @ithulah
      @ithulah 4 роки тому +1

      @@ChadZuberAdventures Wow, well if they had been dried for *months* I wouldn't be worried about small humidity changes, but instead make sure that any longer term greenware storage area is DRY. I really think it's better to fire soon after completely drying....when you let things sit it all becomes a bit hit and miss. You really need to let it sit out in the sun for a day or two if it's months old greenware. However, cracks/explosions are more likely a lack of grog/silica sand type additives to prevent cracking during all the stages. You could have easily got a microscopically small crack in the foraged clay pot as it dried, then firing sealed its DOOM. 😁 More. Pots. Please. 🙂 Next time add grog!

      @@ChadZuberAdventures I'm sorry for writing in spanish. I not good at all speaking english.
      No creo que las roturas se deban a la humedad de la arcilla sino al método de quema que utilizas. Las quemas directas exponen las piezas a las llamas y los cambios bruscos de temperatura hacen explotar las piezas. Desde que cargaste el horno o tu cocina rocket me percaté que sucederia. Además dices que una hora después ya estabas sacando las piezas, ese tiempo de quema es absurdo, con la poca leña y combustible no tendrían tiempo de alcanzar la temperarura que necesita la arcilla, mínimo 400 grados celsius y óptimo a partir de 600 grados celsius. Si te interesa y disfrutas hacer cerámicas además de la utilidad que puede tener ésta en tu sistema de vida primitivo deberías ver algún tutorial de cómo realizar algún horno. Existen decenas de opciones y algunas muy sencillas y eficientes. También te recomendaria que hicieras un video confeccionando algunos utensilios (palillos, paletas, espátulas) de madera, hueso, cáscara de coco o calabaza, conchas marinas, para trabajar la cerámica y darle a estas mejor terminación. Todas las culturas primitivas trabajaron la cerámica y lograron gran desarrollo en ésta manifestación. Seria muy interesante y podrías crear piezas que te servirían grandemente para almacenar líquidos, granos, frutos, aceites, agua, etc. Buena suerte. Tienes un canal maravilloso y quienes te seguimos confiamos en que tienes potencialidad para ofrecer mucho más.

      La verdad, las bayas se ven hermosas en la canasta. Me encanta como se ven. Sí, las cosas de barro cuando están bien hechas, duran mucho tiempo. Las argollas van a servir de plomos para pescar, eso sí pero lo probé ayer en el mar y no pesan suficiente. Las olas y corriente los llevan entonces voy a hacer unas más grandes. Antes hace años yo hacía pan de forma primitiva. Usé molcajete para moler la semilla de trigo y hacer la harina. Luego la mezclé con agua y dejé fermentar unos días y luego hice un pan con la masa. Me salía más o menos bien.

      No, madrone grows in the northwest. The climate is too dry and warm down here. Here in the southwest there are very few really tasty fruits. Most of them have little sweetness or none at all.
