Firing Clay Tools and Harvesting Manzanita Berries
- I love working with clay that I dig from the Earth around my Hut. This red clay can be formed and fired to make all kinds of useful primitive tools for survival. In this video I fire some recently made clay pieces that can be used as bowls, fishing weights and other uses I have not yet decided. I also test fire a piece made of gray clay that I acquired from the nearby desert.
I let the pieces burn together in my adobe kiln at the hut for about one hour. While waiting I collect manzanita berries from the species known as “Mission manzanita” (Xylococcus bicolor) which is common in this area. They aren’t as tasty as other species of manzanita but they can be made into a tasty beverage.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
I do. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share exactly where I go.
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently do collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).

I don’t ‘do’ Facebook - I’ll tell you the reasons why over a cocktail 😎! Is the content that you put up on UA-cam the same as Facebook and Instagram? If so, what am I missing?
Lee same !!!!
@@Coopsterish I share fotos almost every day of what I'm either working on or practicing. It's a good way to get behind the scenes of projects before they are made into UA-cam videos. Many of my videos take several days or weeks to complete a project so Instagram and Facebook allow me to share that way. But I am trying to post more videos more frequently so stay tuned!
@Tony Are you serious? I'd love to see photos of your clay house.

I love your videos i learn many useful things
Thank you so much and I'm so happy you are learning.
A good job Chad 🙂 Since you probably don't want to build a kiln and also probably have a bunch of holes hanging around... You should trial a clamp style kiln for better firing. Make sure to dry ceramics first in shade, then in sun.... You want no moisture at all otherwise BOOM! 😲 Would love to see more ceramic experiments. I enjoy your hut videos more.
Clamp style kiln??? I have no idea what that is but I'll investigate... The bowls that I fired had dried for a couple months. Do you think if there is just a little humidity in the air that could cause them to break?
@@ChadZuberAdventures Wow, well if they had been dried for *months* I wouldn't be worried about small humidity changes, but instead make sure that any longer term greenware storage area is DRY. I really think it's better to fire soon after completely drying....when you let things sit it all becomes a bit hit and miss. You really need to let it sit out in the sun for a day or two if it's months old greenware. However, cracks/explosions are more likely a lack of grog/silica sand type additives to prevent cracking during all the stages. You could have easily got a microscopically small crack in the foraged clay pot as it dried, then firing sealed its DOOM. 😁 More. Pots. Please. 🙂 Next time add grog!
@@ChadZuberAdventures I'm sorry for writing in spanish. I not good at all speaking english.

I am sorry to be late this time Chad. putting the grill was a very clever idea. yet another creative and innovative video. you are too good👍👍👍👏👏👏
Hahaha, you're not late! Thanks for joining in. Yeah, I have two grills now. One for firing clay, one for cooking.
Whenever I see you start a fire so quickly with your magnesium sticks, I can’t help but think of poor Tom Hanks has n the film castaway where he was trying to make a fire by tirelessly rubbing two sticks together, injuring himself at first, but eventually starting his large bonfire.

How does he edit his vids?
❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I thought those looked like fishing sinkers, confirmation from reading your description. Was it the gray clay that cracked? Good video.
Yes, the gray clay actually exploded in the fire (not while filming). I was so disappointed because it was the first piece I made from that clay.
Being out there must be the best cure for stress or anxiety.

Excellent video Chad, greetings friend !!!
Thank you Forest Warrior!!!!
Lol, you should make an episode where you ride the subway... Just commuting in your naked harvester outfit! You could go to trader Joe's, the Apple store, etc... It would be amusing but I'm just kidding! We don't want to see a Chad goes to Jail episode! Great video! Keep up the great work! Stay safe and stay healthy!
Hahahah! I actually thought of doing that in Hollywood or Las Vegas where it's quite normal to see half naked people walking on the strip.
Manzanita, or little apples haha! Great video as well. Are there also madrone berries in that area 🤔?
No, madrone grows in the northwest. The climate is too dry and warm down here. Here in the southwest there are very few really tasty fruits. Most of them have little sweetness or none at all. Several have so little edible pulp that the natives preferred to mix them in water and drink the flavored beverage. They also made manzanita cider which I have yet to try.
@@ChadZuberAdventures here is southern OR we have manzanita also, I heard you can grind and dry them for a flour? Thoughts?
@@ChadZuberAdventures O WOW
You may try to carve or burnish the clay.
Can you try and make a rod to try and catch some fish with it? would be cool to see a handmade rod and stuff
