Pine Root Survival Basket

- Baskets for collecting and storing food have long been an essential survival tool for primitive peoples around the world. Baskets enable people to collect and store large quantities of food to greatly improve their chances of survival in times of famine. Baskets also serve as containers for transporting food and other goods for nomadic tribes. It’s easy to take for granted the vast number of different bags designed to replace the basket in today’s modern world. Backpacks, purses, grocery bags, these items come in every color and style imaginable and are inexpensive to purchase. Sadly, they are also often made of synthetic materials that may take centuries to decompose. Baskets, on the other hand, can be made of many natural materials and will naturally decompose without harming the environment. Besides that, each basket is a unique piece of art made by human hands. Learning to make and use baskets is rather cool.

In this video I collect shallow pine roots and weave a simple but strong basket to use for collecting wild berries in a forest in Baranof Island, Alaska.

The New Rambo movie should've been more like this. Forging in the wilderness, exploring the side of nature. I love how the episode got the First Blood vibe, only without gunfights and action.

I almost live like this but I'm becoming more and more as I learn.
Hi watching you from PHILIPPINES😍wow there's a lot of berries😍
Very soothing watching you do the most simple of taskes! Just eating the berries and hearing the nature all around you, chip munks, birds the wind in the tree's. You take me right out of my high rise apt in Vancouver Canada, to the forest so very close by. A little bumbed that my body doesn't do what the mind wants anymore. 58yrs old and my body is a slave to incurable illnesses. Really gets me when I see so much that I'm missing out on. I live each day the best I can do. I'm learning new great and wonderous things, thanks to www! My mind is still sharp and inquisitive as ever. Septembers crisp clean air is welcome change I can almost breath easier when its like this. Thank you for sharing your solitude there in Alaska, it looks like it was a fine day for you.
Most Sincerely, Crystal Elk.
Sending positive vibes your way.
Peace love dream's!🇨🇦

hello, I’m 22 years old, I’m watching all your videos, my soul calms your subscriber from Kyrgyzstan, I advise your relatives to watch more such videos through Google translator
You survived a really long time. You are awesome and still going.
I love red huckleberries. They grew everywhere where I was raised. Whenever I travel back home, I try to time it so that I can pick red huckleberries while I am there. Then I make nastoika out of them, a kind of Russian brandy using vodka, sugar and the berries.
U get anything in forest... life free n enjoy...👍😊
WHO WAS FIRST???
Not me
By the way i love your videos!

Hey Chad the names Ruth, if you're in Alaska visit Anchorage some time. Oh, be careful of the bears around the parts of Alaska same goes for mooses. Alaska is about to turn in on winter pretty soon, so be careful and the nights are going to get colder.

Chad those berries look so good and tasty i love how you make those baskets you need to be a art teacher, that would be very cool.
Wait until I get better at making baskets
Or u could also use dried limbs or strings whatever u call it from the banana tree. After the leaf is fried off the long stem in the middle could be used to make baskets. We use those to make very strong n big baskets here in my country also bamboos
No banana trees here

Saludos donde es ese lugar esta bonito
I swear, like in the last Alaska'n video, I commented that not all berries of Alaska are safe to eat, some are poisonous and some of the unnormal berries disguise themselves as normal berries. We had a guy that got lost in Alaska and he tried to survive, he was knowledged about berries equipped with a berry book but wasn't experienced with real berry finding and was deceived by the berries he ate and died. True story, they made a movie of the poor guy.
I think you mean Christopher mcandless,I dig deeper in his story after watching the movie, imho he was not very prepared, resulting unfortunately in his death
Greetings from a bushcrafter
Esta interesante la manualidad lo curioso es que lo puedas hacer con raíces de el Árbol de pino ha ese lugar es una reliquia que árboles más enormes lástima que los cortan para madera es un lugar con una gran naturaleza
No, no los cortan aquí.

What kind of berries are they ? Do they taste sour ?
How do you usually tell what berries are poisonous and what’s safe to eat?
You have to study information about them. There is no safe way to really look at a fruit to determine if it's safe. Ancient peoples learned by trial and error. If someone ate something different and then became ill then they would try to determine what caused the illness. That knowledge then was passed down from generation to generation. Today we have books and online sources that share information about the plants of the wild. You simply must study this information and learn to correctly identify the plants. Another technique is the Universal Edibility Test. It takes a few days to do this test but you start by touching the fruit or plant on a sensitive area of skin such as the wrist and waiting a few hours to see if there is a reaction. Then you touch it to the lips to see if there is a reaction. Then the tongue, then chew a little and spit it out, then chew a tiny piece and swallow, then eat a little more, and you have to wait a few hours in between each test and you can't eat anything else. This way you can detect a poisonous plant or fruit before consuming too much.
