Building the Primitive Kitchen Sink: Part 1

  • Primitive man survived without a lot of conveniences and comforts that modern people enjoy today. I often go days without washing my hands, bowls or cups so I decided that it was time to upgrade the amenities at my hut and build a primitive kitchen sink using the natural materials I have at hand. This is the first video in the two part series. Let’s see if you can figure out the plan I have in mind.

    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
    Who films you?
I do. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
    Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share exactly where I go.
    Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently do collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
    Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.

    Camera: Nikon D7500
    Sound: Zoom H4N
Editing: Final Cut Pro X on MacBook Air

Chad, I'm glad the suggestions I added (and others!) helped. No cracking now 🙂. I wasn't sure that the 'grog' that you added was fired well enough to work properly but it seems to have. Usually you have to put in a whole lot more work to grind up grog, whereas yours just fell apart (although that can be too much grog in the original pot, lol)! I think if your ceramics were buried in wet ground they would revert pretty quickly to clay, they just haven't been fired long enough/hot enough to become true earthenware. 45 minutes just won't get you there. But they'll do fine for short-term use. I have suggested crushed shell before and will do so again, not sure if you saw that message... In combination with grog it can give extra strength and is particularly good for low temperature firing. It has a nice and spiky, irregular shape which clay likes. Plus many native American cultures had a history of using shell so it's right for your region. Keep up the ceramic experiments, I really enjoy them. 👍

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  3 роки тому +23

Thank you Alyssa! Some of the old clay I ground up contained a lot of sand in it. That's why it crumbled so easy. I had made it over two years ago while experimenting with clay. The other pieces were tougher to grind down. I won't be burying my pottery in wet soil and yes, I'm quite sure they would be consumed by the earth. How long do you suggest they be fired? And am I able to achieve a high enough temperature with these fires to create true earthenware?
I will use your suggestion to add crushed shell. Do you know what ratio of grog/shell/clay I should use? What ratio do you think would work well?
And as always, thank you so much!

@@ChadZuberAdventures Yes, you can get up to temperature with pit firing but it takes a lot more fuel and time than you are currently putting into the process. You may want to try weaving a roof out of green branches and putting more timber and maybe sod if you can find it, on top. It keeps heat in for the first hour or so, can be worth it to minimise fuel. Maybe making a half-kiln would be easier tho, think of it like a pit with extra high walls made of cob/adobe to concentrate the heat.
Really you need just far more fuel and increased time. To even get to the minimum temperature for earthenware you should see the pots begin to glow. It really needs to be HOT. Most people say a four hour burn.
As for grog/shell, I suggest experiments... I can say 10/10/80% or 10/5/85% but without knowing how pure your clay is and how well fired your grog... it's a guess. There are some patty techniques of adding tempers where by coating a patty (think burger patty) you get 10% I think. You'd have to look it up. Try doing a little cup 5/10/15/20 grog, the same with shell then different combos. If you could find a silica sand deposit, you could include that too, beach sand doesn't work, it's too round. Could be an interesting video!
Here's a couple of websites, not all of it applies to you but they both have some good information.

My guess? Your plan is to have a water container on the brick platform that will lead to the sink. Through gravity, the water would go through a pipeline with a valve at the end.
Also, I am personally interested in learning primitive survival and crafting skills. How did you learn your skills and techniques? I want to learn the indigenous ways, but since I don't know anyone who can teach me, I've been doing trial and error.

Существует ли еще Тарсан в 20 веке? Я представлял, что это было только в фантастическом фильме, мое желание - встретить такое в реальной жизни 😉 и без контакта ты очаровательна и красива, я хочу встретиться с тобой однажды 😍
