Primitive Kitchen: Grinding Acorns in Native Mortar Hole

  • The stone mortar and pestle is one of the most primitive and ancient kitchen tools and it is still used today. A mortar and pestle effectively crushes and pulverizes whole foods and is essentially a stone age food processor. In this video I visit an old food processing site that was used by natives that once flourished in this region. I then use one of the mortar holes to process acorns I recently collected. There will be much more use of the mortar and pestle in future wild food videos so stay tuned.

    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
    Who films you?
    I do. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything.
    How many cameras do you use?
    Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
    Where is this place?
    In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share exactly where I go.
    Do you workout?
    Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently do collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
    Are you vegan or vegetarian?
    I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
    Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
    No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.

    I hope you and your family are doing well. I was in CA when it shut down. I went there for a work assignment, and the next day everything shut down. I was stuck there, in an RV, and couldn't leave for a while. There's more, but my heart went out to everyone that lives in the desert. I was right next to Ridgecrest when that happened, so I saw how devastated everyone there was. I'm back in ND, but my heart goes out to you all in CA. I know so many are struggling so badly.

    I would love to see Chad do a weighted warp loom and try out some ancient primitive weaving.
    Might help with the issues of cold and maybe a better sleeping bed for himself. I am thinking you could
    make a better bed from the Yucca plants and use the weaving to make a great cordage bed and then use
    the smaller strands of the Yucca to make a finer blanket or cover for it and stuffing the bed roll with more
    found feathers or cattail fluff.
    Make a pocket out of Yucca Leaves like your pillow and stuff the bed and then,
    make and create more cordage maybe a two ply one for the bed's top and then use the single strands of Yucca
    to create the finer material. You could even do the same thing to create a thick blanket for taking along with you
    to those cold deserts. Maybe even a curtain to cover the home's window. Love the content Chad.

    Great video, I love the natural vibes and you bring back ancient techniques in a admirable way! You are a true inspiration 🤗I am thinking myself of processing acorns into flour but I have seen you have to soak them for an entire week to leach out the tanins. Had you already done this before grinding them? or is it not necessary to leach them? Thank you 🥰

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  Рік тому +2

      Yes, it is necessary to leach these acorns and all acorns that I have found in this region. I have read that some species of acorns don’t need to be leached but I have never eaten those. I grind the acorns into flour and place the flour into a basket. Then I allow water to drip into the basket for about one day. The water carries the bitter tannins out as it drains through the basket. Some acorns require less time. When the floor is no longer bitter and the water becomes much clearer then the floor is ready to be used. I make a simple acorn mush similar to oatmeal. I make nutrition bars. I even use acorn flour to make a crust for a healthy pizza. Enjoy!

    • @wildfidelia
      @wildfidelia Рік тому

      @@ChadZuberAdventures thank you so much Chad! This is a great technique, thank you for sharing it with me 🤗 I will definitely be trying this soon with your flour in the basket trick.
