Thank you for simplifying pruning redwoods Xavier! Great looking trees.
Thanks for watching. How are your trees getting on at the moment?
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat My trees are doing well even though we have a heat wave going on in Missouri. 40% shade cloth and extra waterings are my priorities right now.
Thanks Xavier!!
So good to hear from you Nigel. Hope all is good at your end of the bonsai world :)
Best trees ever ❤
Yeah - it is everybodies favourite Body Builder! Whenever I do a Dawn Redwood video I think of you. We always released them around the same time. Hope all is well with you Candice and your family of course :)
Lovely trees, specially the S - shaped one with the rock. They look so nice with the ferny leaves.
Very peaceful looking and some years I don't prune at all. I just enjoy all that green growth :)
Hi Xavier 🫶 What a wise man’s approach to let your Dawn Redwood untouched in this condition. 🙏👍 Love your DR forest, especially the bear. And the cuttings 😍 Meanwhile my big DR gained strength the last couple of weeks, though I decided to let most of the new leaves on the tree, this time, to thicken the trunk and branches. Pruning maybe later on. 😊 So far, enjoying summer (rain) and your video 😘 Cheers 🙋♀️ Martina
It sounds like you know exactly what you are doing Martina. Great stuff - we have another week of sun and then a Bonsai BBQ to look forward to on the 6th. A few of us are getting together at my house - I am a terrible cook :(
Great video xav I’ll watch this again when I trim mine. Great lesson thanks 👊👊
Cheers Andy
Unrelated to redwood but your beech pruning method worked a treat , getting some very nice secondary growth🙏🏻🙏🏻
Brilliant - I am happy with the extra growth i have been getting. I will have a full video out later in the year showing the comparative results. I am still waiting to see if it makes 'enough' of a difference to the development. What are your thoughts?
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Iv found it’s helped my beech produce the next flush sooner( which really helps when pests ruin the look of the first flush 🫠)
What a great video. I have learned a lot from this about this species. Didn't know about the Ruby red, except for port!!
Thanks Mick - they are such a strong species and always seem to deal with the heavy hands I have :)
Very nice redwood trees ! ❤ Cheers 🍻
Thanks Tom
Thanks for more great advice Xaz 👍👍
I appreciate you watching Mark. I'm just about to tackle my Scots Pines now...
Hi Xavier, great comments, just started out in the bonsai world so found the tips very helpful going forward, I bought a little Redwood forest from Greenwood Bonsai.😊
Fantastic - what are your plans with it?
Hi Xavier, I guess as I'm a Newby,I'll leave it for a bit, I also bought 5 Japanese larch to make a little forest, I've been advised to wait until February before potting them on.
Great video Xav
Very informative thank you for sharing my friend 👊🏻
Cheers Dan - the BBQ grows nearer. I am already worried that we are getting too much sun right now!
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat fingers crossed it’ll stay nice 🤞🏻
Looking forward to it😎
Dawn redwood is such a good beginner species. So easy to get a lot of materials to train on. Great vid Xav.🙂👍
Thank you magnus - how are the carp getting on?
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat just great. I hope to find time to produce a few videos after the garden opening day in one week.
Hi Xav can’t directly comment on dawn redwood as I have never had any in my collection but the advice you are giving seems sound and relates to other species the ones you have do seem in the main to be in good health, they as you say do need a lot of water in the summer. I haven’t commented your last couple of vids mate, I did watch them but had a few other things to deal with. The wedding went without a hitch the weather could not have been better so a happy dad. All the best my friend.
I was thinking of the happy couple on the day and intended to send a message...but alas forgot! Sorry - glad to hear the day went well. Did you enjoy a few drinks and a dance by chance? Never need to feel like you have to comment my friend :)
Good for you. We can’t always please everyone and you are the one having to look at them .
I love getting suggestions and ideas from people but I also like having quirkiness in my trees :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I just appreciate it when they live and I can learn more with them.
Good advice Xav
Thank you Kennet - is all well in your part of the world?
Thank you for the great advice Xavier. Though I am partial to Juniper bonsai, I expanded to DR this year and just got a xl pot to plant my very first forest using DR.
I'd love to see a picture of it?
Nice video xavier 👌 lots of good tips
Thanks Chris - it looks like we are finally getting a little bit of sun now :)
Lovely job
Thanks Raymond
I love these redwoods! Especially the first one over the rock - it's got such a graceful movement.. For me, the trees in the bear forest are dynamic and cohesive and bring energy and life to the bear
I appreciate you saying that. I love stuff that is 'unusual' because when you take forest walks it is amazing what real trees end up looking like :)
Hey Xavier, this almost happened to me aswell this year. On one day early summer I missed watering for just over 20 hours with intense heat. The tips where I had ramification died off. Pretty similar to yours
It can be so frustrating - I have only had two or three years where the watering and weather have worked to my advantage with this species. Still a beautfiul tree to work with :)
I absolutely love your Dawn Redwood forest. I love the way each trunk bends differently - gives a completely different vibe than a traditional forest. Dynamic - especially with Brother Bear on the prowl. When/how do you prune your apexes to control height?
I have pruned them either at leaf drop in Autumn or late winter before the buds start to swell. I have also pruned them back now without much problems. They are pretty tolerant of my heavy handed approach :)
Great video! My redwood got pretty heavily scorched, lots of brown fronds, but there is a load of new ramification from the brown fronds. Like you im just going to leave it be amd see how it looks in the autumn.
Sounds like a good plan to me :)
Dont have a Redwood as yet and maybe never , pass pls 😂 great video btw Xavier
Thanks Nerina.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat only because it seems so fussy
Nice one Xav!
Cheers and I have to ask how you came up with your username. It is brilliant :)
Redwoods are just fantastic trees, love them
We are definitely in agreement on that my friend :)
Thanks for the good advice re these trees - restraint and pruning! Your weather is startlingly different from mine today. You are in a coat on a cloudy day. In Boise it is clear skies, 101F forecast and the trees need watering twice. Working on my greenhouse relocation is possible only in the early mornings. Trees wait patiently for the final product and new placement on benches. My dawn redwoods and bald cypress are in mostly shade with lots of water to keep them happy. I took a bunch of cuttings when I trimmed the bald cypress and some seem to be making it. The dawn redwood cuttings gave up the ghost. I tell them what lies ahead based on your videos!
Great to hear from you Susan. I was going to drop you an email just to check life was still happening at your end of the world :)
Great video. One of my trees in my forest has died back. Well the leaves have anyway. I assume it's to do with the sun, so I've moved it into the greenhouse to recover. I hope I don't lose the whole tree. It would ruin the planting.
The chances are that it will push out loads of new buds from the trunk in a few weeks time. I have a smaller one that has done exactly the same. If it has a heealthy root system then it should bounce back :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat the root system is strong. Just a bit concerned when the other trees are so strong. Hopefully it will be fine though.
I bought a golden larch a month or two ago and I think it’s been struggling with the heat. I have it in dappled shade but it still looks like it’s just coming into bud
I have a few larches acting the same as well. Dappled shade is my go to place for most of my trees if i can manage it :)
Definitely. Unfortunately I have a small yard in a back lane that is a sun trap I don’t even get a breeze so most of my trees are in full sun for a good few hours
Hi mate, great video
When is the best time to cut big branches from dawn redwoods ?
I would probably do it now but I know that a lot of people advise late winter just before the buds start to swell.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat hmm, I suppose the options are to stunt its growth now and let it recover before leaf fall, or reset it all before spring pushes.
I would like to wire at the same time and to be honest it’s still very young and would not handle wiring very well it’s still very purple on this year’s growth.
Whereas if I wait until it hardens I can both chop and wire.
The growth I have had just in 3 months is major, I can’t believe the speed these grow, the stem is 4 x thicker and easily two thirds as high, amazing trees.
It’s like they’re on steroids lol, it’s gone from 30cm - 90cm easy and I’m sure it’ll keep going 👍🏻
👍👌🙂
Thanks bruce
I forgot to put my Dawn Redwood in a drip tray and it’s crisped off at the tips of the fronds leaves. Didn’t take my own advice 😊🤗
Also my tree insists of lots of dead straight vertical shoots and growth.
They can be very disobedient Jason :)
Oh no... iv'e taken your next forest project 🤥 you should have said.
I forgot that was in the video - you will do a much better I am sure :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat i shall try my very best to live up to your expectations.
Mine never grow upright, so what is the norm 😂😂
Exactly! Well said my friend. God Bless
I hate rules.
Which is why I'll never show any of my trees.
They're your trees, style them how you want. 😋
Rules were always meant for breaking and the forests constantly do it in 'real life'. Cheers for your support :)
Extra stress on the tree, extra stress on the tree??? At least you didn't buy a very nice Japanese juniper from Dave at a bonsai meeting yesterday, then proceed to run over it. That is STRESS on a tree. And stress on me.
Oh No... Tony would have admired that approach to branch bending :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat O.K. that made me laugh.
