I like the two roots and would keep them. I'd also try to find a very tiny figurine and put that onto the stone :-) like a natural shelter. Maybe a tiny dinosaur 😀

I like the supporting roots on the 2nd DR - a larger rock that makes contact with these roots and trunk would solidify the composition - maybe a nice Stronsay rock? Can't believe how many roots one can remove without affecting the health of the tree. Well done!

If it is healthy and in good soil then it should produce loads of replacements very quickly. They are like larches wehn it comes to root production - prolific :)
Nice rootwork Xav. I have to admit that I prefer the natural curved look of your 2nd Redwood without the tripod base but taking into account the stabilising factor whenever you repot it may be better for the tree but you could always use a piece of wood as a bracer while the roots establish themselves. Anyway, as always it's entirely your decision as you have to look at it everyday & you must do what you like! Enjoyed the video 😀😀👍👍

Excellent work and demonstration, Xavier. I was gonna dig up my bigger down redwood off ground this week, trim the roots and put it back. Now I'm a little bit concerned about the late frost we might get. Have to think about that. Looking forward to the upcoming repottings!
I am about to do the same with a couple of my Chines eElm that are ground planted. I think the frosts are just about gone for a few weeks in the UK. Shovel in action tomorrow maybe...

Actually, I really like the two roots buttressing the tree over the rock. It suggests a 'story' of the tree's past. The tree is incredibly graceful without them, but I think they add a deeper element.
Hi Xavier, what a root prune, i fear i am always a little conservative/cowardly when it comes to roots. I don't like the 2 roots you left on the last tree but a bigger rock would help. If you were to cut them off then a change of planting angle may help to stop the feeling that the tree is falling over.
Definitely agree with your suggestion Andrew and I may review my opinion on the next repot. Dawn redwood roots are very aggresive so you can definitely be brutal :)
DR roots are extremely aggressive. From my experience anyway LOL. If you like those 2 roots let them run in the soil more than the rest of the root system. That should help thicken them up more to be in proportion to the trunk. Mine have yet to start breaking buds but they are getting more plump.
How about scratching the bark in between the roots on the second Hawthorne and putting rooting hormone there similar to airlayering to encourage root growth there and fill up the space?

I can understand your concerns. Truthfully it has taken me a lot of years before I have reached the point where I know (from experience) that this type of pruning is ok. It doesn't matter how many times you see somebody else do this, you ultimately have to rely on your own comfort and experience. It's your tree after all :)

This has always had a Tyranosaurus Rex displayed with it - it's with my Larches at the moment...because of the good hunting grounds :)

You could have a look at it and remove some of the heavier downward roots to ensure you can develop a nice flat rootbase?

I am a fan of buttress roots on my trees. Whenever I removme them I often wish I hadn't :)

I'll be honest, I've never tried that approach before. Have you had much success doing this to get root new root growth?
