cutting my 8yr old redwood back to a new leader for the next section of trunk. i repotted because i airlayered it last year and now its time to get rid of the old root system below the layer.
next update • Dawn Redwood Bonsai up...
The content is much more important than the quality of the film making. Thank you for the demonstration its very much appreciated.
Beautiful redwood, any update on this?
*found your update and cutback from a month ago, really enjoying your channel.
thanks. hopefully it will give you some good ideas.
That sucks, needed to see what you did.
i know. sad face.
Great tree. Can’t wait til my dawn gets that big
you wont have to wait too long if you let it get really tall and start swaying in the breeze.
Darth Masiah about foot and half now. Been slow bc I did root work too early but I guess it has a good start now. Nebari develops fast on these guys
Hey. Awesome looking redwood. I need to do a repot too. I was thinking about chopping mine too but then was wondering if it would be better to air layer it. Can you root the top part you cut off? Or are you just tossing it?
you can airlayer these guys. it wouldn't hurt to try to make another tree from what you want to cut off.
I'm pretty sure you could repot, then after the new shoots have hardened off, go ahead and do the airlayer. just make sure you don't jostle the tree too much. then in the fall you probably would be able to separate the layer.
Do you know if Giant Sequoia can be root pruned in this way? I've yet to attempt root pruning with mine and have heard they're very difficult to repot successfully.
I've also read giant sequoia can be finicky about being repotted. i definitely would not be as overly aggressive as i was in this repot. there's quite a few discussions about this over on BonsaiNut.com. pruning just up to 1/4 of the root ball and raking out a few surface roots seems to be ok.
Thanks, I'll check that out.
I've a redwood about 6 foot tall, 3 maybe 4 inches in width. Ready to cut this coming autumn. What paste do you use after the cut?
my favorite is:
CUTPASTER Bonsai Cut Paste/Bonsai Pruning Compound 160g green top
the putty consistency is great. its also easy to see if the callus is rolling over because the putty will start cracking. these little tubs last forever, too.
@@DarthMasiah thanks for the reply! Have you ever tried making cuttings, and have you had any success? Currently trying a few now myself

i actually did try a few this year. i took three in march when i repotted. i should've waited till the leaves hardened off, but i wanted to see how vigorous the shoots would be. i dipped them in clonex and just put them in some bonsai soil, no humidity dome at all. 2 out of 3 rooted around may and they've put out a little growth since then.
Where can i get one? And could you do an annual update?
you can get one from Brussels Bonsai online. i plan on continuous updates for the foreseeable future. thanks for stopping by.
How well do they take cutting the roots?
it seems they don't mind a lot of root work at repot. redwoods are really strong growers.
I'm sorry. I'm sure your work was ok. But I couldn't Finish the video. The random black flashes and weird blowing sounds.
Drove me crazy.
windows movie maker strikes again.
