Great video Xav, and the calendar is an excellent idea. 👍
I'm a big fan of Dawn Redwoods. I like to leave mine completely untouched throughout the growing season and then prune them in the winter. I too put mine in a tray of water on the warmest days - those Redwoods can really drink! 💦
It amazes me just how much growth they can put on in a single season as well. You need to send me some pictures Martin :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Will do! 👍
Thanks, really helpful. Peter Chan at Heron's Bonsai has had success with air-layering dawn redwood so I may give it a go.
I have definitely seen other people have success with it. Just not something I have yet tried. I would be very interested to hear how you get on in the future with one :)
Love this Calendar!!! How lovely to have all the tips in one video. I have marked my calendar for each "milestone". My single Dawn Redwood is going to be very grateful to you.
Thanks Susan, but I am sure you knew all this already. I remember when I was first watching UA-cam and all i wanted was a 'short' guide to dates - ony MaKe did something like this that i could find. Hopefully it wont upset too many experts :)
Wow, I can actually add something useful here...strange. YES, I've air layered these. Success came with a brach approaching 1" in diameter. Previous attempts of pencil thick branches failed, though I'm not sure if it was the medium I was using or not. Plenty of roots, all in one season, when it did work.
As far as cuttings, you seem to have no issues, but maybe it's worth noting that one of the heads of horticulture from the Arnold Arboretum (our kids were in daycare together for a while) told me that they take pencil thick cuttings in the winter. Had a pretty good success rate doing that, and will plan on doing it again when the specimen in my yard grows up tall enough to take cuttings from (one of my cuttings, actually).
Cheers, thanks for all the great info as usual.
-Colin
Cheers for that Colin. I will be very interested to see how you get on with this yourself. Good to know airlayers are definitely possible :)
I had succes with a metasequoia airlayer. In 2022 the airlayer callused over, so last year I re-opened the ring and scraped it deeper. And in 6-8 weeks it had rooted. Removed the airlayer early august and it started growing good. Hope it survives winter(it should) like my other metasequoia’s.
Thanks for that - it will be good to see just how that gets on in future.
Thanks Xavier for another interesting and informative video. I've been following your instructions on caring for dawn redwoods and Japanese larches (guess that's next?) for the past year or so, and I totally trust your input on them since I've had great results on both. Cheers!
I really appreciate you taking the time to say that. I have 4 more guides filmed for January and one of them is of course, Japanese Larch :)
New sub great videos from Scottish Bonsai
Thank you so much - did you need a passport to view stuff in England :)
Thx for this Great Informations! Very Good . I have one and i Must Repot it in Spring. And this Informations are very Good. I like it 👍 nice Start in your Bonsai year ❤cheers
Cheers Tom - definitely aimed for people very new to the hobby.
Ottimo Video come sempre
Thanks so much for watching and supporting me :)
Super video Xavier!!
Thanks Nigel - hopefully I don't upset any 'experts' in the bonsai world :)
Thanks!
No worries Ken - hopefully something in this is of use.
Happy new year and welcome back.
Dates noted 😊
I also keep my Dawn Redwood stood in a drip tray as the are quite thirsty.
Ps. Did you use “essential” in a video title???? 😂😂😂😂
It was in and out of the title 6 times before I decided on the thumbnail only. I just knew I couldn't use essential without thinking of you :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat😂
Thanks you for sharing the info without a lot of filler
It is never easy knowing what different people prefer. If people need more detail I have done in depth work on these as well. i appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment :)
Great!! Now I know exactly what to do with the few of these that I have. Thanks Xavier.
They are such a hardy species that even I can keep them alive - I look forward to hearing your progress :)
OUTSTANDING! I am in 9a in AZ .. Dawn R's are on my Bonsai wishlist ... love your creative shaping .. great motivation. Oh, and the specific trimming guidelinevis fabulous! Thank you
Now worries - that is so nice of you to say linda. They are a challenging tree but look incredible when the fronds are out. What have you got in your collection that you love?
Good information. Your pronunciation was spot-on, too.
Thanks Susan - and hopefully I may get a few more species identifications right this year :)
Thanks for your video. I haven't got a redwood, but Iike yours, specially the curvy one! Hope you're feeling on top of the world now. Stay warm!
Cheers for that. The toe is still causing issues so not able to get much done. We are definitely heading into a very cold spell this week so just rechecked the winter storage and cold frame. All the best
This is indeed amazing- what a great idea! 😍 Your dawn redwood is looking great, as you do. I didn’t expect to see you out of bed by now and hope you’re still taking it easy. 🙏 All the best 🤗😘 God bless. Cheers 🙋♀️
I shall tell you a secret. All of these were filmed back in October/November which is probably when I should have beenr esting my toe :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat ❤️ Some time has passed, since then. I’ld love to hear you’re on your way up. How are you meanwhile? As mentioned before, take all time needed for full recovery. 🙏😘 Cheers 🙋♀️ Martina
Im pretty sure peter of herons bonsai they airlayer. He has a couple of good videos on these trees but i don't remember him saying anything about the red stem part.
I picked up the ruby red stem aspect a while back. Changed my whole approach to Redwoods and definitely works.
Clear and concise, perfect.
That's very unlike me :) All the best for 2024 Andrew
Bonsai Calendar… Xav you genius 😁 what a brilliant video, I’ll be using this as a book mark for my dawn redwood
REALLY looking forward to trident maple episode 😎
Maple is next Saturday - it counts for Trident as well :)
Happy Happy 2024 Xavier! Absolutely LOVE this care guide calendar!!! Unlike the rest of Canada, my growing climate is very close to yours - maybe a touch cooler in winter and warmer in summer. I will be looking out for the notices. Thank you for this info on Dawn Redwood - will be very helpful this year.
I am really interested to hear how repotting some of your coniferous species in late summer/fall (versus spring) compare. Now you will have some historical data using both methods on pines, junipers, etc.
It will be good to see the results - a lot of expert advice still say spring is the time. I will be repotting a few this spring as well to continue the observation process. All the best for 2024 Sue :)
Many thanks for the great Dawn Redwood info Zavier😊
No worries - I have 4 more species guides planned for January / February :)
Great info...much needed for newbies like me
Hopefully it is of use - always tricky doing something like this with the 'range' of opinions in the big wide bonsai world :)
Great video Xav! Very informative and I appreciate the help!
No worries Matt - I look forward to seeing more from your patch of the woods soon.
Excellent my friend! Great tips for my new r
DR Forest from Candice.
Cheers Dave -- I shall be looking forward to seeing that forest again. All the best :)
Just what I needed! Thank you 🙏🌳💚
I'm sure you were just fine without this but thank you for saying this anyway :)
This is some awesome information! Thanks for making this it helps a lot!
No worries - I finally put a few notes in my pad to better use :)
Thx Xav, good info. Now I just need a tree.
Grts
Kennet
Thanks Kennet
Awesome video. Very helpful even though I have had my own dawn redwood for some time. Always good to compare notes. I have actually successfully airlayer the dawn a couple of times, within one season.
That's brilliant - I shall have to give it a try then. Do you have any other points that may be of help to people?
You pretty much covered most aspects of dawn redwood. Perhaps you can comment of the pruning of dawn redwood too.
Hi, this is designed as a quick 5 minute Calendar video. If you look at the playlist you will see I have done one or two very in depth pruning videos on dawn redwood. Cheers@@rubber800
Thanks Xavier for the great videos as always. I have watched your essential guide to Dawn redwood bonsai and you did go in depth on how to prune! Thanks for that. @@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
Great information!! I have a ton of seedlings up... I will be preparing!
I look forward to seeing them thrive under your expert tutelage :)
Great bonsai information. Thanks!
I love Dawn redwood and right now - they are all looking lovely with the new fronds pushing out :)
Grave videos I have great to catch up on everything
Thanks Mandy :)
Love the calendar. I have a dawn redwood which will benefit from this info, thanks
Also, have you any idea where I can purchase trident maple seedlings. I’m really struggling to find any in 🇬🇧. Would appreciate any direction on this, thanks Xavier
Cheers - hopefully it will be of benefit to a few people.
They are hard to get hold of but easy to root from cuttings. I have a few 2 year old rooted cuttings in the garden which I may be selling this year.
Nice job xavier keep up the good work mate thanks
Thanks Phillip - to be honest it is refreshing to be able to slow down a little bit for this colder period of the year.
Great information and a very nice tree.
Thanks Raymond - it just seemed the perfect thing to do whilst I am 'not doing anything'. All the best.
Great info, Xav. I’m diggin it
Cheers my friend
its
a beautiful species for bonsai. one on my "want that" list for sure. ty xav. happy newyear
Definitely a very bonsai friendly species and so easy to tak cuttings from too. All the best for 2024.
Yes I have air-layered Dawn Redwoods … twice
Sounds like you have given me the confidence to have a go myself. thanks :)
Good info Xavier thanks 😮
Cheers James but I have no doubt this is all known to you already. I am looking forward to seeing how your Tamaracks and White pines develop this year :)
Love this! Thanks Xav.
Cheers Steve - I have a few more coming out in January. Hopefully people will add additional tips if something is missing :)
Great video!🌲
Thanks John.
Great video. What is the best soil?
I thought I answered this. I would probably go for a more organic mix than I am currently using. It does like to have 'wet feet' from what I have seen.
Alright!
Cheers - I love your username and logo :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat thank you thank you!
brilliant. thanks Xav, i've got one of these that i've just been leaving alone through fear of killing it.
are you going to Doncaster on Sunday?
Definitely be there :)
see you there!@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
Will do Adam@@Ad_DOOM
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for your support
Can you prune the branches when they are ruby red even if there is no bud present where your trimming too. I'm fairly sure when you prune you have to identify buds to trim too or the ramification won't occur
If you look back at the detailed pruning video you will see how I demonstrate exactly that. These are meant as little 5 minute short guides for getting your timings right. This pruning isnt really related to new buds it relates to the existing ramification that has taken place through the year. You cut back to existing fronds to encourage the tree to produce new buds from those juntions. The early spring pruning is definitely related to the buds because that is all you can see on the tree. Cheers
👍👌🙂
Thanks Bruce
My grandsons red wood bonsai missed watering two. Due to my illness.
The leaves are droopy but not dead yet🤞🏼
What can I do to save it.
He is in college and I got the trees 😮
If the roots are fine then it will bounce back. Just treat it as normal and so long that root ball didnt dry right out you should be ok. Just keep it in a shaded area and well watered.
Hi my name Alan from Leicester, I have just got another dawn redwood which has some large branches ( pencil thick ) Which I would like to remove , do you have any advice on propergating large cuttings
I am just about to put out my Dawn redwood video later this week. Truthfully I would just stick it in some soil and see what happens. I find I get a lot of success with semi-hardwood cuttings but the thickest I have tried were about half what you are describing. Perhapsplant them in pots and then put them in sealable plastic bags for humidity? let me know what you do in the end - I will be very interested :)
Hi there this is my first bonsai winter and I have heard conflicting reports about putting evergreens in a garage over winter what is your view on this my garage has no windows and I live in the UK
Mine are all outside on the ground close to fencing or bucnhed up together. I have never put anything in the garage. I have done this since 2002. That doesnt mean other people are wrong and I do know that my friend uses his garage for his maples - but there is a window and he uses fans for circulation. Hope this helps.
"Chances for the branches" lol

Hi why has my redwood bonsai indoor not come into bud yet?
Hi Tony, mine started to open up about 2 weeks ago. I am interested to know how long you have kept your redwood indoors? In terms of why? Truthfully I don't know - everything should be leafing out by now unless your in a very cold climate and the tree is still dormant? When did it leaf out last year?
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat hi I have had it 4 years ,always keeper indoor, there are 2 buds just breaking through now .
Hi Xavier,
Could you remind me what your email address is?
