Join Academy Award-winner Alex Gibney and psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis in conversation with London-based human rights attorney Clive Stafford Smith about Gibney’s new documentary, Crazy, Not Insane-a provocative exploration of Lewis’ long career studying the psychology of murder. Gibney’s deft portrait of Lewis and her work expertly looks beyond the cold facts of crime and into the hearts and minds of killers themselves-including Arthur Shawcross, Ted Bundy, Mark David Chapman, and more. Clive Stafford Smith has represented over 400 death row inmates in legal cases in the US and around the world, and is the founder of Reprieve, a charity focusing on the direct representation of prisoners facing the death penalty. The conversation will focus on the making of the documentary, Lewis’ groundbreaking research, and why her testimony often played a part in criminal convictions and sentencing. The film will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max on November 18.

I just watched Dorothy testify for a cold-blooded sane murderer. She called Gannon the victim THAT BOY and wouldn't say his name while she testified with empathy for the murderer. She couldn't answer any questions and was completely unethical in interviewing the murderer. She had her son and the murderer's lawyer in the room with her while giving the murderer an evaluation. She was leading the murderer during the evaluation so she could say the murderer was insane. It's pretty scary this is what's going on in our mental health system. These are the people we are supposed to trust with our lives. The system is a joke.

Totally unprofessional, yet she helped the prosecution 100% and the defense looked absolutely foolish. She was an absolute disgrace today and yesterday. She never gave any solid reasoning for saying that LS was legally insane when she murdered Gannon. She was very articulate in all of her fluffy answers, but would not commit to anything to the questions that actually mattered. It made her seem like she knew nothing about the case at all, like she didn't do her homework, she was very disorganized, came late and sometimes HOURS late, every single time she was to be at court. I hope to god she will never be an expert witness ever again. Please retire.

It was a disgrace this doctor was deemed an expert and yet had no respect for this poor little Gannon and referred to him as the boy, the body, and it. She was not prepared for the stand and she was all over the place and had no respect for the court or case. When she acted confused as to seeing her son in the video with LS that did me in or any shred of respect I was trying to have for her just as a person. @@Jenn_80 That is a harsh accusation. It being her son in the stairways. Where did you get that from?
But I agree with, dr Lewis should have never done this case. Her whole legacy gone. Big mistake.
People haven't seen the documentary 'Crazy, but not insane'. Just saw an old lady babbling on the stand. I felt embarrasment, while I admire her work and devotion from the past. She was an icon/pioneer for the difference between chair and life. But Colorado doesn't have DP any more since March 23th 2020.
Letecia's 2 lawyers are having a 'vacation' whole trial. And evidence is obvious, that Letecia killed Gannon. Because being in Florida and suitcase found in Florida.
Otherwise, she could have gone away with it.
Dorothy should have never given her opinion, without EEG/MRI, talking with Letecia's mom, aunt, sisters, about the past.
Lady retired and wanted to shine once more and a 'puzzle'. Doing what she loved most. And she messed up, big time. Nobody told her, it not being a good idea.
How can you give an opinion, only on 14 hours talking within 3 days?
Letecia deserves life, because Gannon is also gone.
But her 2 lawyers do also lack, explaining why and how. Nobody on the defense list. Only a dr. Niederhausen. Whom Letecia visited 2 times, Dec 5th and Dec 13th 2019. For apparently Hydroxyzine and a letter to quit a job/break contract for anxiety. And 6 weeks later, Gannon dead.
It stays just unbelievable, that click in people's head, how you can lose it like that. That rage. Extreme rage.

Dr. Lewis's work is "defunct" and her role in Gannon Stauch's murder case is an act of desperation. As an expert witness she was paid well. However (like her client) lacks respect for the court and behaves as if legal procedure does not apply to her. The elder doctor was duped by her client and the prosecution already mutilated her expert report. Dr. Lewis's actions in the case are so deplorable and she lost all credibility.

Watching this after Dorothy gave initial evidence at Letitia Stauch trial totally doubt her work. Diagnosing without researching talking to family and all those closest who
have information on Letitia supposed multiple personalities including her daughter because the attorneys said you can't interview them. This trial shows how nieve she is in chasing her glory for A place in psychiatric academic history. That's interesting re Russian connection when she says Letecia started talking in Russian. Dr. Lewis was one of my supervisors during my residency at Bellevue. She could obtain incredible information from patients at Bellevue without leading them. She taught me how to learn about a person's trauma and how they dealt with it and how they did not deal with it. I remember her interviewing a case that several psychiatrists thought may have dissociative identity disorder. We eagerly watched as she respectfully and impartially interviewed the person. Within 20 minutes, she looked at all of us in the room and the individual she was interviewing and said "you do not have dissociative identity disorder' and explained in plain terms the multiple reasons why. The person being interviewed let cried deeply in 'relief' that she did not have this diagnosis; yes she had a history of trauma, somewhat substantial trauma; had post traumatic stress; etc but not dissociative identity disorder. For what it's worth, as I listened, I agreed with Dr. Lewis. One of the main traits in her personality is that she has no preconceived opinion of a person or their condition prior to interviewing them. This is fundamental and is a prerequisite to being a good psychiatrist. You get much deeper and further in an interview without any bias, and if you have ever seen a psychiatrist of therapist, you know it is very easy to see and feel the interviewer's bias 'coming at you.' If that happens, either ask them about it to see if your hunch is true, or please go to a different doctor or psychologist. Some doctors enjoy being high profile experts in their field; the attention, admiration, etc. Dr. Lewis did her own thing, was a quiet and respectful person, and did not want fame or attention at Bellevue. She interviewed many more famous individuals and other killers that she does not talk about unless specifically questioned. There is a wealth of information stored in her experience that she earned. She also was one of several doctors that could show me how experienced she was by hearing a short case presentation and a couple of my questions on 'where should I go from here?" and suggest 3 or 4 open ended questions that would clearly (and sometimes shockingly) reveal a person's true nature, both good and sometimes horrific. When a person talks to you one on one on a certain level you will get goose-bumps/tingles all the way down your spine in a way no movie could ever achieve. You can dislike her or like her, but just be aware that she has an unprecedented ability to connect with individuals on a level that is rarely achieved in their entire life(the good, bad, and horrific at times). Her opinions are the collective summary of years of interviews that go very deep into a person's trauma, how they think, how they reason, etc. Most people don't ever communicate on this level with anyone, let alone sociopaths. I am glad she was one of about 20 supervisors of mine at Bellevue/NYU. She also taught me cognitive behavioral therapy along with others there.

Maybe if he would have had a good upbringing in his earliest years it’s possible that he might not would ever have killed anyone. So many women and children died and because of that we should be digging deeper on why he turned out the way he did.

So even though Dorothy is in a documentary that draws a very clear distinction between “Crazy” but “Not Insane”, shes throwing her reputation out the window by trying to claim Letecia Stauch IS Crazy and Insane.
I really don’t get why some therapists (psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists) want to just invite ridicule and tarnish their reputation
I plan on listening closely to Dr Lewis’ testimony during the Stauch trial, but I’ve listened closely to the States forensic mental health examiners & I know the evidence so well I have a very hard time understanding how Lewis is going to defend Stauch and her ridiculous self diagnosis.
Also, why was Dr Lewis allowed to be communicating w Letecia Stauch and writing something down that the videotape could not capture while she was interviewing Stauch.
Very shady behavior on the part of Lewis imo

cateellington4801...I watched Dr. Lewis both yesterday and today. Her behavior was unbelievable, unethical (imho), unprofessional, unprepared (she knew next to nothing about the case which led many of us to suspect her son read and summarized all the docs), rambling, and she got caught out by the prosecution lying under oath! It was torture to listen to her twist words, excuse, rationalize, and deflect both days.
She had the defense attorney, investigator, and HER SON sit in on her interviews of the defendant! Then tried to claim she didn't know who that person was leaving the room until forced to admit it was her son...then her convoluted reason got her admonished by the prosecution and that may have been one of the times also by the Judge! She was late to court every day, after breaks, and after lunch! That got her 2+ admonishments by the Judge...which she ignored. She also claimed food poisoning as to being late. It's also suspect how she lost notes so they couldn't be turned over to the prosecution, then "found" them when the Judge had said she couldn't testify about docs the prosecution hadn't received.
      I could go on...!!!
The scary thing to me is her reputation may impress the jury enough to believe her. Of course, audio was off during the questions of the jury (infuriating to 8,000+ of us listening on a stream) which we don't know if on purpose or not.
Imho, she destroyed her reputation by testifying in this trial! She was NOT credible, in the opinion of all 8,000+ of us watching/listening!
Please watch and comment...I'd be interested in your take on her testimony!💜

I guess so many of us returned here, or maybe came over for the first time, to speak about the disturbing disregard for the court that we saw at the trial.
Dr Lewis seems like a sweet but creepy old auntie who would believe anything you say to her and any excuse you give.
Without even talking about poor little Gannon as if her was a real human being who didn’t deserve to be tortured but obviously was - it was as if Dr Lewis just wanted to advocate for Letecia under any and all circumstances.
I’m sure we all agree that LS has a broken brain - but we can’t fix it and she knew what she did because she worked so hard to cover it up and get rid of any evidence of what she had done.
She talked in circles in the same ways that LS does - it’s as if she loves being interviewed and in the spotlight. She’s an expert and can see things no one else can.
When she was confronted with the email that she sent withdrawing the request for the MRI and EEG, she really tried to talk that back until the judge finally had enough.
She thinks very highly of herself and yet didn’t really do any of the expert witness testimony correctly according to court procedure.
I’m a little surprised the judge allowed as much of this as he did.
Even the defense lawyers were trying to make her stop talking.
I think her son took out his cell phone and called her while she was up there on the stand.
It was like watching a sad, macabre circus.
She even said denigrating things about Gannon’s father and called him an awful man.
No one has ever said he was an awful man. Even his ex wife, mother of Gannon, never has called him an awful man.
Many, if not most, psychiatrists in the world today are not here to help make the world a better place. They don’t help take responsibility for the health of their patients, they medicate them and send them on their way.
Most mass murderers are on the same meds.

Isn’t it the exact opposite? In that we do not put to death those found to be insane?
A defense strategy of saying you’re “Not guilty due to insanity”, or “Guilty but, insane” does not equate to making it a fact the defendant is insane.
Im against the Death Penalty. But forensic psychologists and defendants & their lawyers insisting someone is insane becs there’s a paid defense expert willing to peddle the defense strategy is not something I can get behind. Even as someone opposed to the DP.

There will be NO HUMILIATION when we look up the validity of the famous story of the adult eress woman, one that is the GO TO STORY pointed to, as the most beautiful of teachings of Jesus, and we realise that it is remo ved from modern translations because the story was A CONFIRMED INTER POL ATION, a froidd, AND NOT IN THE EARLY MANUSCRIPTS. Even though this story, is a big part of our faith, which we use to show Jesus was all love 🤦. We will not care. ( I mean the story itself contra bicted our beliefs, because we belive Jesus is si nless, and so should have st0n 3d the woman, but he didn't, meaning he was also a s1nner! But stop it. We don't use our brains and question nonsense. We says it's a mystery and blindly accept it)
So what if church and Paul teach DIRECTLY OPPOSITE TO WHAT JESUS TAUGHT.
So what if Jesus refers to himself as a prophet, and is called by all those close to him! We will change the meanings of words to remain upon falsehood. GOD is now also a prophet because Jesus bought a message, and multiple ano nee mous authors 4 centuries after Jesus told us Jesus is God ( in gospel of John), and so God can also be a prophet.
( again, don't bother pointing out that if Jesus was indeed God, then that means he was D3C3IV ING THE PEOPLE, letting them believe he was a prophet when he was actually their God!, because we won't care)
most of us haven't heard verses like john seven teen .3, 2wenty.7teen, unambiguous clear cut, not open to interpretation statements that clearly d35 troy our whole existence, because church pastors like to keep them quiet.
So what if most of the statements we depend on, are metaphorical, and clearly refuted by verses from Jesus, so what if Jesus saying he is " Alpha and omega" is removed from modern translations because its yet another fraudlent insertion. Rev1.eleven
john 5ive sev7 is one of our most famous frwdulent insertions, the trinity formula, johanine coma, it is also removed from all modern translations, because it is yet anothwer froid. Even though, all the inter pol ations, fraud and mi15 stranslations seem to be around who God is, and who Jesus is, alarm bells wont go off ringing.
We will instead, insist the bible isn't kurpted. We will get angry with the Qur'an and Muslims for daring for suggesting it.
Even though God says He doesn't accept human s4c rifice, we will insist Jesus the man, d13d for us. We know God is immortal, so we will reconcile by creating a second dimension of Jesus, where he is 100% man and 100% God, so we have a loophole.
When muslims tell us God is immortal, and so Jesus can't be God, we will be able to say "his human nature d1 3d".... and if the Muslims say that God hay 8s uman s4c rifice, we can say "He was God in flesh" and it was a divine s4c ri fice!
We appreciate when Jesus was asked the all important question about what was required for salvation, he didnt say believe i will dy for your sins, no, Jesus said to keep the commandments, most importantly that OUR lord God is one,...HOWEVER, we prefer the story paul and church taught us, this is much better for us as we don't have to s4c ri fice anymore, we just belive Jesus paid for our sins, and be sorry and bingo!
And as you have seen so far, we aren't very s1n seer, so we see no in just iss when an innocent pays for the s1ns of the guilty, or when children inherit s1ns for krymez that had nothing to do with them. Even though this goes against all the previous messages and teachings, and original s1n is only found in pauls work and the last gospel John, we will accept this 3 vil concept.
Again, we don't care that in Eze kiel 8teen .2wenty God tells us he hay 8s ORIGINAL S1N, BECAUSE HE IS JUST, and that we can be saved through repentance, not just forgiven, God says He will forget the sin through his mercy, WITHOUT BLuD. ( WE COMPELTELY IGNORE THIS BECAUSE IT IS ISLAM ) ....also we can point to our false pro pet paul, who said we can do away with the old covenant. ( even though Jesus said that not one JOT shouldn't be kept until heaven and earth disappear ) they don't call us paul followers for nothing.
We will insist Jesus is the only begotten son of God, even though David is called begotten of God by God in the Bible. And we will say that the title 'son of man' is a divine title ( don't remind us eze keel is called son of man more times than Jesus )
We will claim Jesus was a willing s4k rifice even though Jesus begs, and cries all day to be saved from the cruc fiction. Jesus 'will' was to be saved, but he said he would accept whatever was God's will.
We believe God DID NOT ANSWER Jesus prayers, and our God was stripped n4k3d, bee ten whyppd and kil d by men against his wishes.
Even though all the disciples deserted Jesus, and there were no historical eyewitness, we will argue there are ( we only have jos ephus, who wasn't an eyewitness, and reported on rumours )
We will point to eye zayya 53, where Jesus meets absolutely NONE of the criteria, and ignore salm 9one where Jesus is mentioned by name, and says not even a bruise or cut would come to Jesus as God will send angels to protect him and raise him up
We will ignore the letters of ignacious which writ to challenge the popular belief that the crucifixion of Jesus was an illusion. This proves in the 1st century, people were unsure if Jesus was crucified.
We will insist a plural godhead of 3 fully God's is PURE MONOTHEISM. even we know its absurd, but if we keep insisting, we can be at peace with it.
Our bible attributes much bad and f17th to Jesus that we wish it didn't, but we are good at spinning and miss represen tation of text, so we will twist our way out of it.
Although we believe Jesus is God and always was, we will run whenever people respond to our critique of Islam, by showing 10x worse stuff our God Jesus commanded in the o.t.
And for any of the bad stuff they show us from the n.t., we just say Jesus was teaching a parable 😉 always works 💪
We will continue spreading l13s about Islam, because it is the biggest thret to xtianity, many of our pristes, celebs, and in particular, our woman, are leaving paul anity for Islam by the fastest rate. The conversion rates are the highest, and most ree verts to Islam are white xtian woman!
But, as malcolm once said, the media can make the innocent the gylty and the gylty the innocent, and the sion media is on our side, look at how easily we made the world believe they did nine wane wan, look how we lyde about sad damn, ga daf, luted them countries and now we are helping the sionist juws carry out a g3n 0cide on the nay tivs. ( we don't care the ones we help LITERALLY belive our God Jesus is boil ing in x crement and sea men)...

Maybe the death penalty isn’t a deterrent, but it will certainly deter the person receiving it from ever killing again. I am interested in this subject matter because I want to understand what makes a person able to kill and or torture another and how society may be able to intervene to prevent those circumstance, possibly recognize if someone is a danger and aid in identifying and capturing these killers. To investigate them for they’re own sake as an excuse to the death penalty is ridiculous.

That was extremely unprofessional by the doctor and shows tremendous bias on her part as well as a complete lack of empathy. This woman/doctor it's completely off of her rocker totally incompetent. I can’t wait, til she realizes is ☝🏻IN FACT ONLY A DOCTOR ALTER of someone with DID. I suspect and she herself hints, that she projects and has interest in this because it’s what’s inside HER.
… and thanks for uploading this.

Has anyone ever tested HER mental issues? Definitely narcissistic, does a lot of gaslighting, lying, blames everyone else and seems to be losing a grip on reality for sure.

Complete denial of the spiritual component of all of this. The brain issues can be a measurement of the impact of spiritual “things” going on. This is not to say that frontal lobe damage and other brain injuries don’t make the human body more susceptible to being open to such crimes.
Your biased and out of left field comments on Guliani makes your work, which has basis, come across weaker to those just touching this topic.

@@doggo7514watch her testimony in Gannon Stauch trial. She will say whatever you need for a buck. But she has dementia so don't expect it to go well.
