The ground on that oil sensor is bad is all. 329* is the max temp, which means it's pegged and seeing no ground. Common problem on the V. Too bad this one hadn't had that fixed which interfered with a legit review.
I have a 2005 ctsv as a weekend car and I took it out on some twisty, curvy, hilly, backroads where I live and it handled very well. I was doing 85 mph in spots where the speed limit was 30 with the windows down blasting guns and roses and going through all the gears like a mad man. It was amazing! The whole adventure was a blast.
Several folks already mentioned it. Oil temp issue is caused by poor ground connections. I preemptively fixed it on my 05 CTS-V by cleaning the grounds on the passenger side fender as well as behind the passenger side head. I did that work 6+ years ago and the highest oil temps I ever saw was 285F on The Dragon. I was non-stop pounding the car at low speeds and it did awesome, including the brakes.
That either makes it work or not work. His is working they just can't handle abuse their meant to sell to people who's gonna play 10 seconds and cruise. This guy was dogging it over and over the temp was red hot. Only way to fix that is to put a cool hood on and a bigger oil cooler and fan
Are you people still complaining about the adds and reclames that Matt's doing ? For real ?! He is has been pumping FREE godlike car content for YEARS, taking from his time and money, I would have supported him throughout the years if I had money, seriously, but what does he get in return... ? You can't even watch a single add even when you CAN skip it?? If you are so butthurt just skip a damn minute and continue watching, nobody has to read your sad comments and complaints...
+boosted 2.4 Do you realise that watching adds generates money, not watching videos in general, moreover, ppl purchasing the products that he promotes don't directly translate to profit
The culprit in his case turned out to be the ground right under the hood support and very easy to get at. Reading a DVM from the bolt head to battery negative showed almost 1/2 volt! (450 mv). We removed the 15 mm bolt, added a 3/8" "star" washer (between lug and frame) and the voltage dropped to less then 50 mv. All the problems vanished.
for the average joe, it looks like a rental caddy. No crazy rims, aero bits, hood vents, other garbage. Clean. So yeah, it is a sleeper. Could be more of a sleeper, yeah, but compared to rental spec that it still looks like, it is.
I had an 05 CTS-V and that oil temp gauge was an issue. The common fix was to ground it or get your own gauge properly installed. The rearends were weak and the rear diff pumpkins could even crack the casing. The transmission was garbage too. The syncros would go out within 25k miles. Other than that, the car was a great handling car.
Yep. Common. Shoulda kept beating on it...it was fine. Never heard of syncro issues, however - No different internally than every other T-56 out there.
Bart Small yep, can be syncro issues when factory issues aren't fixed and you get up into high mileage. this car was a very poor example of the capability of the v1
Bart Small how about the t56 mn6/mn12 in the c5 & c5z do there ls6 oil temp or syncro issues. How bout the diff they come with clutch type lsd seems strong
100% true. I had 3 rear ends under warranty, and 1 warranty trans replacement which of course didn't help. Rebuilt again by Tick with better syncros and it was perfect. Motor mounts went out every 20k too. Driveshaft was a POS too. Oh don't forget the plastic end tanks on the radiator, 3 of those under warranty each time they snapped off.
Oil temperature issue is a sensor grounding problem, there's a TSB on it. I've had it read 300 degrees cruising at 70. I fixed mine by running a redundant ground wire from the oil level/temp sensor to the ground in the driver side kick panel. There are also things that the dealer can do with calibration, etc., and that sometime works, but the extra ground wire is a cheap reliable solution.
Love your videos Matt! Don't care about the ads in the beginning either man, I'll continue to support you by watching your videos and I always turn off adblocker before viewing youtube anyways because I hate not giving maximum ad revenue to channels who work hard to bring us entertaining videos and sometimes put themselves at a pretty high financial risk just to give us a video to enjoy. Keep it up man! Always loved these first gen CTS-V's too for the size and simplicity. Actually looking into getting one of these since I don't want to spend more and get the IS-F Used, I'd be paying probably twice the price and I am a mechanic so I don't mind some quirks or some small issues if the CTS-V needs like an add on oil cooler or something since it appears it might be an issue lol. Plus I like the fact that they're not obnoxiously loud with factory exhaust, I don't need a loud V8 I just want a subtle throaty noise, and some torque and speed. The LS is great in any configuration if you put a couple dollars into making it more robust for any climates and driving styles.
One of my favorite cars (in stock form) was my 98 BMW 540i 6 speed manual. A friend of mine had a stock 04 CTS-V and would beat me by 1 car length in the 1/4 but when we hit the twisties he could never keep up. In a two year period all I ever had to replace on my car was the valve cover gaskets but we were constantly working on the CTS-V. The CTS-V is a fun car but be prepared for frequent repairs.
Simon Coles Not really, they had their flaws but they are much more rugged than the competitors. The interior of my 300,000 mile 2004 DTS is very nice for having such extensive use. Only about 3 or 4 main wearing points. The same cannot be said for German or Japanese cars - especially of the era!
Oil pan sending units are known to be questionable. Mine read hot very often until I replaced it. Yes, the interiors are crap and the rest of the car has the cheap 00's GM vibe. But they are infinitely tuneable and the most of the issues are well known and can be resolved. My 04 has over 125K, and while the original LS6 dropped a valve spring at 100K, the trans and rear have been solid. I have a Texas Speed 408" LQ9 stroker in it now, putting down about 575hp at the wheels and after 15K miles still haven't broken anything......fingers crossed! Its all about how you drive it.
A shame it was a stock 150k car... these cars transform when the old OEM bushings are upgraded and that oil temp light is an easy fix of cleaning up some of the main chassis grounds on that early model car. Would have loved to see a review of a nicely setup and modified first gen V... regardless, thanks for the review!
As a gamer, I checked out that game you promoted in the start of the vid.. now, I didnt go with the mobile version I tried it on my PC.. Honestly.. Kinda pretty solid so far. Thanks dude, Im always down for a new game.
Poor battery and harness grounding in the engine bay of the first generation CTS Vs causes the oil temp gauge and only the oil temp gauge to soar!! Sorry you didn't get to really push the car Matt, I fall in love with mine everyday and have been wondering lately what you'd think of it.
kristian bolin I understand that it's a used performance car and it will have problems (my first love was an Eclipse GSX...), but GM has a notorius reputation for lack of quality from cost cutting on even the smallest things.

Cory Z yea probably that. My car still isn't finished quite yet. But it should be stout. 652bhp and 595 torque at the flywheel. Getting dropped in this week. If Matt wants to drive it on the show you guys can see what these things can do with some real power.
Luke V Yea dude. It's got a Ford 8.8 from creative steel, 3.73 gears (stock ratio) upgraded axles and CVs, New driveshaft, LS9 clutch, katech flywheel. Everything should be pretty stout. The stock Diff in mine lasted 103k miles. I owned it for about 50k miles. I beat it pretty good and it held together. The only reason I went with the 8.8 is because I was fairly certain that the motor would nuke the rear end.
eb110americana not an LS6 anymore. It's got an L76 out of a G8 GT. It's a 408 stroker. Going to run it on E85. So the 91 octane number should go up a little. I'm mostly tuning it for E85 because it's WAY cheaper and there are 2 stations local to me.
The cts is not a big car at all lol , it was a mid size car at best in 2004, yea the new ones are full size lux car but in 04 they were fairly compact, . what did this guy use to drive a MG midget, a cts-v is like a 3 series with 400hp which is more then plenty for a car that size.People say the silliest shit trying to sound vogue. " yea i don't normally drive big car, its not what i'm use to" while sitting in a mid size car smh, a focus rs is bigger -_-
Open recalls on these cars include brake line failure and random loss of acceleration. Make sure to contact your local Cadillac dealer before the car almost kills you. Btw I have a Creative Steel adjustable shifter for sale for 1st Gen V if anyone's interested!
Hey Matt, I just bought a nice watch you recommended some videos ago from the watch club. Now that I have received this brand new model, I wanna be real classy and smoke a cigar. Can you recommend me some good brand????
I used to use this car in Need For Speed Most Wanted. Over the years I used all the cars in the game, but seeing this in the rear world is way more exiting. At the time I did not know they used a Vett engine in them.
OK I know I'm putting a bullseye on me for asking this but is the 2, 3 shift funky on this car? For some reason I would miss that shift ALOT. Read somewhere the trans had a issue with this. Any suggestions.
Can you make the ads just 30 seconds or less so people dont just skip over them right away? I appreciate your videos so i dont mind watching them if they're short because I know they help fund everything. 😊
That oil temp shouldn't shoot up and down like that as quickly as it did. I've thrashed an 04 CTS-V around some quick and tight roads around here in Ottawa and it took it for 30 plus minutes at high revs and that didn't happen so I feel like it might be a faulty sensor or something like that. LS6 are surprisingly reliable engines. I absolutely love those CTS-V's.
That Cazab website offered me $73 yes seventy three dollars for my 2017 ATS-V with 10,000 miles in perfect condition. However, I also have the option of donating it for $500. The biggest scam I have ever seen....I can't buy my gas cap for $73. Go to the site to be amazed.
cazab offered me $3090 for a 2010 Cadillac cts with 50,000 miles that i traded in a few months ago for $10,000. not only that, but it also gave me the option to just donate the car to them for a $500 tax write-off. wtf is this shit site.
as an 04 v owner I'm surprised they didn't really talk about the horrendous factory shifter and fragile first Gen diff, or if he was 1 of the lucky to get the Gen 3 or 4 upgraded diff under warranty
Damn time flies... I have the wrong picture of Cadillac in my brain from 2004, and thinking they only had these cool 'monsters' (cts-v) in like 2010ish.
another thing. I've been anticipating a v1 review for a while. Even messaging Matt myself as I wanted to get his take on the quirks and performance of the v1. instead we got a guy who clearly knows nothing about the v1 platform and was really on to just promote his website...
I'm pretty sure these had a tune update due to an issue with the oil sensor readouts showing high. Granted an oil cooler never hurts on a big car like these.
No, it was a 5 series sized car for a 3 series price. That’s what the first gen cts was and gm was totally wrong with it. That’s why the ats was introduced and the alpha platform. Amazing car!
One thing that was not mentioned was the mileage on that thing. It looks like it was blowing smoke on one of the passes and $10 grand for a high mileage oil burner is no deal, oh well.
LS engines need oil coolers. buddy of mine has a 2010 CTS-V and he needed a FAT ass oil cooler for track use even with a huge cooler, oil still sits at 270F after HARD use.
Here's what I got from cazab 2014 VW GTI 28,000 miles Not a scuff Offer: $ None You have a special vehicle that we want to give special attention to and its valuation. 2007 FJ Cruiser 6speed AWD/4x4 110,000 miles Clean Over $20,000 in parts invested Could sell for a min of $20,000 to a few people today if I wanted (never) Offer: $4995.00 2000 Miata 5 speed Very clean 150,000 miles Offer: $405.00 2000 Audi TT fwd 5 speed 118,000 miles Immaculate About $20,000 invested in upgrades Offer: $655.00 1998 BMW 323is 5 speed 212,000 (runs like a dream) Body 8-9/10 interior not great Going to be track car Offer: $60.00

First time I looked at David and I was like "Wow a girl ?! interesting" Then I saw little bit of beard and I was like "Oh"... then Matt said "This is David " then I was like "Oh no".
Oil temp was due to the solar eclipse causing a venus retrograde situation.

Should have hung one of those crystals from the rear view to capture some of that negative energy.

🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
What's weird is there were cars on side of the road broke down during that solar eclipse.
The ground on that oil sensor is bad is all. 329* is the max temp, which means it's pegged and seeing no ground. Common problem on the V. Too bad this one hadn't had that fixed which interfered with a legit review.

CTS-V's had a tsb for a ground issue to the oil temp sensor. It caused the oil temps to read high if the ground wire wasn't properly grounded.

I used to use this car in Need For Speed Most Wanted. Over the years I used all the cars in the game, but seeing this in the rear world is way more exiting. At the time I did not know they used a Vett engine in them.
I really enjoyed this video.
Was this cars Cadillac's another to the GTO at that time. And by the way , Matt. You should do a 2004 GTO.
When is the video on corbin's Rolls-Royce coming?
Was it burning oil on that drive by or just my crappy screen?
Macus Thomas
kind of looked like it. could be road dirt but that usually isn't blue
Been waiting on this one for a LONG time. Other than the oil temp, how did it drive?
No, it was a 5 series sized car for a 3 series price. That’s what the first gen cts was and gm was totally wrong with it. That’s why the ats was introduced and the alpha platform. Amazing car!
One thing that was not mentioned was the mileage on that thing. It looks like it was blowing smoke on one of the passes and $10 grand for a high mileage oil burner is no deal, oh well.
Always loved the front end design of the CTS-V
Matt is this game addicting?
My 04 CTS (not V) ran out of oil in 3-4 days with no warning ⚠️ got a rod knock now it's unusable.
Not enough shots of the actual car in my opinion. I like watching Matt and all but it's about the car!
it’s cool i watch an ad before the video, then as soon as it starts i watch another.
The Design reminds me the XLR i had back in the days. Was a nice car. Loved it.
LS engines need oil coolers.
buddy of mine has a 2010 CTS-V and he needed a FAT ass oil cooler for track use
even with a huge cooler, oil still sits at 270F after HARD use.
Cazab offered me $155 for my 2011 335i. I know depreciation is bad but come on, my E46 is worth more than that
That oil temp can't be right
Fix that oil temp take all that plastic junk off the motor and throw it away its all its good for
What you mean "straighter or tighter"?
Straightaways or tight curves
The gauge is most likely not accurate. Common for older gm cars
Gotta love all the knuckleheads still complaining about ads on all the free content. Let the man get paid for his time and just enjoy the video.
Engine oil filter relocation kit with a oil cooler should fix that.
This or mid 2000s SRT8?
Bryce P srt8 for damn sure. they hold their value and arent as fragile.
G8 GT
That's true the G8 is much better than this cadillac.
Bad temp sensor
bad oil temp sender. i had the same issue with my LS6 V
Damn improving on the quality
Matt that is correct about the CTS-V
Brembo cheap brake calipers i personally have a friend who did exactly that.
These are really nice cars. One of my friends had it to 160 on the autobahn.

Benjamin Davidson agree that the site is low balling like hell but it's not necessary to list how much you invested into the cars, you never get close to what you put in
Benjamin Davidson What a joke? Why does the website even exist?
gedaman The website is a joke. It's just for gags
rgtrooper13 not hard to buy 6,115 or so worth of cars

First time I looked at David and I was like "Wow a girl ?! interesting" Then I saw little bit of beard and I was like "Oh"... then Matt said "This is David " then I was like "Oh no".
"Hey guys I wanna sell you complete shit for a quick pay check" - Matt
