What a great teacher! Stole my husband's clamps and went crazy! Was the easiest way to sandwich and baste my quilt without my 70 yr. old knees hollering at me! Been a fan of yours for many years! THANKS
Very helpful tips! It would be great to see a close up of the design you are stitching. If possible...as you are stitching. 😊 Thanks for your inspiration and instructional videos.❤
A much easier no fail way is using 3 pool noodles, takes 20 mins for three layers. Was gamechanger for me. Used to have pain for days after basting quilt on floor. Also had to clean floor and rearrange furniture. Now it’s so easy, found video online. Also FMQ all my quilts at home on small domestic singer. Thanks for video
i, too, have been following you for more than a minute! ..your instructions are true/spot on and work. .i LOVE your foxy/wry sense of humor. and, you make me giggle.
I came upon your video just by accident and loved it. I have 25 quilt tops that need to be quilted. I can't afford the prices of having a long armer do them and don't have the space to baste them on the floor. (Can't now as I just had a hip replacement. ) Your instructions for a small table was great. THANK YOU! A Canadian browser!! 😊
Great video, Rob! I do my basting this way and it works a treat! I mark the center (or near the center) of the table with chop sticks crossed over so I can feel it through the layers. Then I match the center of the layer while it's folded in quarters. (Not my idea. Saw this a long time ago on another channel that I sadly can't remember now.) Once you have a common center for all the layers, you can get them lined up before you unfold each layer on top of the previous one and not have to move it a lot. Great for people like me who can't really get down on the floor to baste. Thanks, Rob, for showing this technique.
Love watching and learning from you. It was difficult to actually see what you were doing. I’ve seen other videos of you FMQ and the camera angles were much better. But thanks for all you do for us quilters😊.
Stumbled upon your video last night and wanted to say THANK YOU!!! I need a knee replacement and basting on the floor is not an option for me. I have tried pasting with pins and spray basting and I keep getting puckers in my backing when I try to machine quilt on my domestic machine. I have 36 quilt tops completed and need to quilt them all to donate to a foster care agency in Tennessee for boys age 11-17. They're mostly forgotten when people donate quilts. Your video has inspired me to give your method a go and hopefully finish these quilts before fall so these boys can have something that is truly just for them. Thanks again Rob for all you do!❤❤❤❤
Would love to see more free motion quilting videos like this one! I don’t know that many besides meander, so if you can show us a variety that would be great! I need some ideas. My next quilt I am treating as a fmq sampler so I can practice many different styles.
Rob, at last you have taught me how to baste my very large quilt on a much smaller table. I have been putting off completeing a king size quilt purely because I couldn't work out how to get the backing and batting smooth without wrinkles. Thanks for showing me exactly how to do it.
Hi Rob, I’ve followed you from the start…but life happens and I hadn’t seen you for a couple of months…now that we’re caravanning, I’m doing hand embroidery as I didn’t bring my machine! At home, Brisbane, I’ve been making my daughter’s T shirt quilt, 14 years overdue!(I’m not kidding!)…this has been a perfect video for how I’ll quilt my daughters Squash quilt…thanks so much for all you do and keep up your great work! Cheers from Australia 😊
Thank you! I have been quilting for a few years now and this is the first absolutely helpful video of how to baste for free motion quilting. Wonderful information.
I've been basting my quilts on a table the same size as yours and I'm DONE! A few weeks ago I bought 2 8 foot long folding tables. They are side by side in the garage for a huge flat surface. Plenty of room to walk all around them and work and I don't have to try moving to my dining room table and protecting it from my safety pins. I'll be heading to Lowes this morning to buy a set of those clamps. They are going to be perfect. Thanks for the idea.
I love your idea. My garage is so hot here is Terrell, TX, actually its hot everywhere here. 😱 I have one of those table that I use in my livingroom and will get another one and some clamps to work in my garage this fall and winter until I figure out that much space in my house. Thank you for table idea, better than scratching up my dining table surface. Happy quilting.
@@feliciabernal4256 I'm in Las Vegas and we had a very hot summer here. I sure wasn't out there when it was 120! I could not find clamps like he uses that would open far enough to go on the folding table and I couldn't squeeze them open anyway. Found some 4 in bar clamps on amazon a set of 8 for $14 that work great. But those two tables are working out beautifully.
I've watched many many many of your videos and you had your camera angles spot on to watch you sew. Seeing exactly what you are sewing, up close, makes all the difference Rob. Not seeing those partial circles and whatever your pattern was, is not able to be repeated by us cuz we can't see the pattern being sewn. Hope that makes sense? Please do another video with your camera angles like when you video at home. It truly makes all the difference. Haven't checked your description below to see if you linked the video for this amazing quilt top. Gotta check that out cuz your quilt top is beautiful. Wonky log cabin? Thanks for ALL YOU DO. Your videos help me learn everything you do so it helps me be a better seamstress. Keep em coming cuz I'm addicted to your way of teaching. I've become a better quilter because of your teaching method and your camera angles. Please redo this video so I can see those patterns up close. It truly makes all the difference... Rob, i think you’re fantastic! Your ADHD actually helps me learn more (i have it too). Your State quilt of CA was very cool. The wonky log cabin couldnt be any better. I appreciate you! A fan
Hello Rob, great tutorial on sandwiching quilt layers. Although I could not see anything? Possibly because of the view angle. All of the information you mentioned in this video is very helpful thank you for that. We'll be watching more of your videos to see what else I can learn.
Thanks for the tips! The alligator clamps are wonderful!! I bought a big variety bag of those at Lowes last year, and it included 4 different sizes. The super small size is perfect for adjusting fabric tension on the quilt frame ends. Plus the larger clamps keep the frame from falling off the table. Its the best quilting gadget Lowes carries! Lol
Excellent instructions. Just what I need for the space and size table I have available. The steps were illustrated very clearly. I think I will incorporate another tip I read somewhere to help with making sure every layer of the quilt “sandwich” is stacked properly. Here it is: tape a coin, such as a nickel, in the center of the table. This can be done by laying some type of straight edge or string in an “X” from corner to corner both ways. Where they cross is the center of the table. Mark the center of each layer of the quilt sandwich by folding in half lengthways, then crossways and mark the center intersection with a gentle press. Now place each layer down as demonstrated, feeling for the coin on the table. Place the center of each layer over the coin being careful to keep the edges squared up. This will assure adequate backing and batting extend beyond the edges of the quilt top. That will save some fiddling with the layers, especially the batting which can stretch or tear with too much handling.
That is one beautiful quilt! I never feel like my quilt is secure enough using safety pins. Wish I could see designs being quilted. Thank you for offering your quilting wisdom!
Thanks I love your videos used to watch man sewing loved those too so found you again. I so badly need those clamps will be looking around for best place,to buy a bunch. Loki g forward to more videos
This was a good video. I wish I could have seen more of the quilting you did. But you did help with my problem sandwiching my quilts😊thanks for sharing and WELCOME TO TEXAS🤠🎆🏍🏇🏊♂️👢🤗
My quilting is not great either. But the quilts I love most are not the perfectly longarm- quilted ones, they are the wonky self-quilted ones. Those I've made from first snip to last stitch. I'm now trying to learn free motion quilting.🙉 Good luck !!
Hey Rob, I recently started watching more of your videos. Your shop is not far from us. I am in market for longarm to start learning and offer quilt service in my home. I love this table top method of smoothing and stretching sandwich with clamps. I just did a queen in the middle of my living room floor ( I swept and mopped before I did it of course) and my hamstrings and hips are still sore. I taped it to my floor. Then I pinned it very well and probably didn't need half of them because I decided to get it longarmed instead. It is good to know a little more about safety pin placement. I am a self learner for past 15 years or so watching videos and reading a lot of information. And trial and error. I have a question on your spacing of pins, what Is chaka distance? Dictionary not clear on it. Thank you for doing videos.
You make the most beautiful and unusual quilts I’ve ever seen ♥️ I love learning from you! I’ve haven’t been quilting my quilts with design( just a straight stitch) but I’m ready to try! Can you show me some really simple things to try?
Yes, thank you for the info about the clamps! I can no longer get down on the floor to baste or pin and have been at a standstill. Ordering clamps today! Thank you so much.
Thanks so much for all the tips. Have tried to FMQ on sample blocks and will continue to work on improving. The quilt on the wall behind you is stunning!
Love the information about the clamps and the table. I never could get that stupid blue tape to work for me! Also - LOVE the tips on treating FMQ as exercises. Never thought about it like that. It would have been nice to have a close up to see what you were doing with the circles though. Thanks for the information - off to buy clamps!
I love the spring clip idea.... but wouldn't hiring the table with the pins nick up a wooden table? Just to take note of that before someone does this on a nice wooden table. I use plastic folding tables for this reason
Thank you very much vor this really helpful Tutorial. I have small Space and wont like to make large quilts because of the space. I try it next time. But i am sure it works. I am watching your Tutorials very long time and all i made was perfect. 😊
I loved this video, many good hints and tips. Couldn't see the quilting you were doing very well, but tried what I thought your circles were like on paper. Would like you to demo a fairly simple floral and leaf motif Thanks.
Rob! Thank you. I feel hopeful that I am going to be able to pin my quilts. Clamps?! Genius! My table is only 48" square and my quilts are durn big but I am hoping I can translate this. Any tips for bigger quilts that hang more off the left and right?
This is a great demonstration, but for those with a design wall and are short on table space, basting on the design wall that helps so much letting gravity work on your behalf (so long has you have a pinnable surface as I do with my foamboard insulation).
This is such an excellent tutorial and has answered almost all of my beginner’s questions! I would be interested in some info on what Thread to use. I’m sure there’s information on this as well… somewhere! 😅
Rob, I quite liked this video as my basting space is similar. I would like to comment that although you talk through your machine quilting, we can’t see the bed of the machine to experience it as well. That would be very helpful. Keep up the great work.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. LOVE learning from you; down to earth, real person to person instructions. You are the best. Thanks Rob.

Those spring clamps could be a game-changer! Thanks, as always, for a valuable & enjoyable tutorial.

The most down to earth, knowledgeable, interesting and informative quilting videos I've seen in ages. Many thanks.
Wow, thank you! Really appreciate this Feedback
I have followed your videos for years. They are always a delight! Informative and fun at the same time!

Ok, after all this time you finally popped back up on my feed! WooHoo!!
I didn’t see a tutorial for your wonky logs?
I permanently borrowed my husband's spring clamps and they are the best thing ever. Thanks for all the tips for pin basting and quilting.
Ha ha ha😂
I love all your videos. You are a great teacher. Thank you for all you do. Monica from Australia
The largest office clips work great for attaching quilt backs to most tables and you can more evenly stretch your backing.
I'm a newbie quilter! Your teachings are great!
Your timing is impeccable! Thank you for the tips.
Thank you. I learned the last piece of the puzzle from you today. Now I can take my EIGHT, yes 8 tops and make the final products!
Rob, thank you SO VERY MUCH for teaching these techniques ! Super tutorial

Hi Rob, I wanted to ask you about stitch size for quilting. Thank you very much for the teachings. A hug from Portugal
Very helpful. I hadnt considered the clips at all and my last quilt was just all puckered even tho i smoothed and pinned a lot.
Love your tutorials! I want to do stars and moons on a quilt and i am sure you have shown moons but not sure about stars
