Hello Rob, Are you going to provide a list for beginners? It might look something like this: Rotary cutting mat 12x18 inch Rotary cutter,45 inch and extra blades A sharp scissor that is comfortable in you hand, At least one acrylic ruler(8 1/2 x24) (6x12) A good working (not leaking) iron An ironing mat at least 18x24 inches Pins with a magnetic based container, or clips with a container for them A marker -see Rob’s previous video on marking your pattern Needles specifically for your sewing machine and kind of fabric you’re using Extra bobbins -load extra bobbins, it makes your piecing and quilting less frustrating A sewing/quilting foot for your machine and project A container of some sort to put your project in when you have to stop for the day -it keeps you organized, and your project clean That should do for beginners. What do you think?
Fondly remembering my beginning set of quilting tools. I had a rotating cutting mat - I think it was 14”. My ruler was 12.5” x 1” (yes, I cut a quilt with that!) and a rotary cutter. I used a stack of post-its to create a seam guide. And my thread was a cone of serger thread. I’ve come a long way since then.
It was quite interesting to watch your video. I know exactly where Quitman Tx is. I spent time living in Mineola and graduated from high school in Fruitvale. Currently living back where I was born in Oregon. I enjoy your channel as I do learn new things. Hope you keep it up.
Rob, this is great information! I’m still fairly new, and wish I’d seen this when I was brand new. I over purchased equipment, and I was not accurate with my piecing. All these tools are exactly what is needed. 😁
I wish I would have had this video when I first started quilting. I would have saved money on all the different brand rulers as I am slowly transitioning to all creative grids rulers. I did invest in a good wool pressing mat! Love it! I still sew on my Brother Cp100X machine for my piecing the quilt tops. I love it and it fits within my quilting tools budget. Rotary cutter being left hand but really ambidextrous, a good rotary cutter was a must! I think one more tool at least for me, was a really good pair of small scissors, which I do need left handed scissors, to snip off threads, my go to brand is friskers. Thanks for putting this video together as always I love your energy and enthusiasm for quilting! ❤
Love my Martelli rotary cutters. There is a learning curve but with my carpal tunnel - it’s the only one I can use. Having said that, other friends who also have carpal tunnel can only use a different style cutter.
Oh... so your energy is from caffeine? I thought it was from your passion for quilting.😅😅😅😅😅 just kidding. Love your videos and your excitement for teaching us. Regarding the wool pressing mat, I've had the steam from the iron go thru the mat into my self-healing cutting mat... so I never put the wool mat on top of my cutting mat anymore when ironing. Has anyone else experience that issue?
I can't afford a wool pressing mat, SO, I picked up a couple yards of 100% wool felt. It is a step in the right direction and, as it was on a steep discount, fairly inexpensive.
@barbarajefferysings I got a beautiful vintage baby blue twin size wool blanket at half off day at the thrift store, so it cost me $25.00. I practically ran to the register to pay for it! I have seen YT videos where ppl make ironing board covers with them. I will double it, to have more loft. I shall look for another one to make smaller ones also, to have beside my sewing machine. I hope you can find one soon, they show up occasionally. I just didn't know why I needed one!
Looking forward to your December event. Now I know exactly what I need! Thank you!
Oh the buggy cam made me guggie! I had to look away when you was moving! But would love to visit the store!
Is sooooo nice to see Rob again!! Im sure your travels were fun but you were missed!!
I have been quilting a long time. Great video for a new quilter. I learn so much watching your videos.
Thanks for this. It's nice to see a tutorial that offers lots of information as opposed to just focusing on one item. Happy Mother's Day to all 😊💐💐
Your instrutions are great, you answered questions even a seasoned quilter might ask.
Ty need videos like this. At 77 just starting.
All right! I didn’t start quilting until my 60th birthday, but I sewed since I was a grade schooler. Just keep on making, and at your own pace.
@@maryannequinn3465 thank you for the encouragement
Welcome to this wonderful world of quilting!
Hello Rob,
Are you going to provide a list for beginners? It might look something like this:
Rotary cutting mat 12x18 inch
Rotary cutter,45 inch and extra blades
A sharp scissor that is comfortable in you hand,
At least one acrylic ruler(8 1/2 x24) (6x12)
A good working (not leaking) iron
An ironing mat at least 18x24 inches
Pins with a magnetic based container, or clips with a container for them
A marker -see Rob’s previous video on marking your pattern
Needles specifically for your sewing machine and kind of fabric you’re using
Extra bobbins -load extra bobbins, it makes your piecing and quilting less frustrating
A sewing/quilting foot for your machine and project
A container of some sort to put your project in when you have to stop for the day -it keeps you organized, and your project clean
That should do for beginners. What do you think?
Good list. I'd add safety pins for basting the sandwich and hand sewing needles.

Hi Rob I love your cart camera, looks like fun
You are such a great teacher!! Thanks for the video.
Good job Rob

i suggest buying the best at the beginning.... Need a Martelli rotary cutter

Great video, thanks.
Love the buggy cam!! Hopefully someday I'll be able to visit your shop. It looks wonderful!!
This is what I put together for my daughter for her first quilt.
Good job! Love your videos ❤
thank you
love this video and am so anxious to learn at 67 but this stuff is really expensive....cheaper place ???
Yes! I’ve damaged too may cutting mats while pressing on a wool mat. Anyone know how to reverse a cutting mat bump?
Is there a better wool mat then others, only ask because the wool mat I have leaves brown stains on my fabric

Oh, yeah!
I never put water in my iron.
Yep. I ruined a big cutting mat that way when I started out.
Absolutely! That was a tough lesson to learn when the cutting mat warped from the wool pressing mat! 😞
Think his energy is just from him, he’s a blast, great guy :) ❤️
What brand of cutting mat are you using?
You mentioned steam in your iron. What are the reasons you would not?
Unfortunately after a stain on a white shirt from the iron, now I have a new video to create that will explain more. Please stay tuned

Small project to start? HAHAHA!!! My first 3 quilts were 84" square!
I can't afford a wool pressing mat, SO, I picked up a couple yards of 100% wool felt. It is a step in the right direction and, as it was on a steep discount, fairly inexpensive.
You can also purchase a wool mat that we use for horses.
You can purchase a fairly big one for less than $30. 😊

Are you located in Tx now?
Rob lives in California. He flies in every so often.

Looks like more than 5 to me?
Wal Mart has mats cheaper than anybody.
When I looked for a horse saddle blanket, they all contained polyester, rather than 100% wool. So I passed.
People with Alpha Gal Syndrome need to exercise caution using a (mammal origin) wool mat.
Thank you
