  • A DIY plumbing odyssey that began with good intentions but quickly turned into a comedy of errors. In this video, I set out to repair a leak on a close coupled toilet, but as you'll soon see, things didn't go as planned. From failed attempts to source the right parts to unexpected complications, this repair job became a cautionary tale for DIY enthusiasts. I'll share the challenges I faced, including a perished seal and a leaking isolation valve, and how I navigated through them. This video serves as a reminder of the importance of patience and persistence in DIY projects, especially when it comes to plumbing. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or a novice, this video will provide valuable insights and lessons learned. Join me as I turn a plumbing disaster into a learning opportunity and share my experience with you.

    When I've done this in the past I've mopped out the cistern with a cloth to get rid of any residual water left after flushing. Just helps avoid extra spillage.

      Yeah that's an idea...or a titan wet and dry vac is good for it also 😆

    Last comment, sorry! My toilet much the same as this one is located on a solid outside wall so in the winter it basically runs with condensation so I have space it out from the wall about 8mm to provide an air gap to hopefully dry out most of the damp, otherwise the wall behind the cistern is black with mould.

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  4 місяці тому +1

      Comment as much as you want 😉 oh that's a nightmare but good solution 🙌 our one in the lodge gets condensation on it in the winter because the cold water feed cools the toilet down so much that it's an issue when the warm air hits it 😬

    Few hints for you, get a mcalpine close couple kit if your new bog is 1.5" they're plates are bolts are stainless and the best quality on the market.
    Use a pegler butterfly valve they're decent quality and tool free in an emergency.
    Don't use liquid ptfe on a compression fitting its meant for sealing threads and sets into a solid plastic. If you want to use a sealing compound on the olive use a paste like jet blue or laco slic tite.
    Good vid and thoroughly entertaining 😂

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  4 місяці тому

      Oh them pegler ones are full bore right? I've seen on forums that full bore ones are better for not leaking?

    Done this job a few times and theres always something that goes wrong, tip with the valve clean the paint off with an emery cloth etc to get back to copper and then use some potable jointing compound on the olives 👍

    That looks like the Wickes special toilet I installed over a period of days, hitting problem after problem. The main problem was the floor wasn’t level, or even close to square at the back of the cistern. Plumbers Mait and silicone got the thing fitted and working. I don’t mind a bit of plumbing when I’m doing the install. Fixing previous crap trade work is a pain. Well done.

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah that's tough when the floor is off, I tend to use packers underneath to get it close and then silicone round the base. I'm surprised it went so smoothly considering how cheap it was but the pan and cistern are slightly off line but I knew that would be the case from the one in the lodge

      My project started with my better (but uninformed) half deciding to spend Sunday afternoon painting the tiny, mostly unused, toilet room. That’s the long version of a Sunday project that goes wrong over days and weeks.
