    also i cut it because I started rambling a bit, but although I think Falling Down is definitely slanted toward a conservative bias, it doesnt dock the movies quality and I dont think the MC was actually bigoted. Funnily enough, despite the stereotypes of hispanics, homeless, fast food workers, etc. he beefs with the neo-nazi about him harassing a gay couple and being a nazi and he doesnt seem to have any problems with the non stereotyped/satirical people in the film. Just a clarification 👍

    These movies are enjoyable and great, but it also symbolizes how men are doing under capitalism and how they SHOULDN'T react to it but also explains that the reaction IS justified under capitalism.

    Nightcrawler is probably my fave of these movies. They're often misunderstood but make for great cinema and an interesting reflection of male loneliness.

      Nightcrawlers actually an interesting suggestion that slipped my mind. i think the thing that would “disqualify” it is that Lou was always a sociopath from the start even from the beginning of the film, so him eventually snapping was more of a self destructive thing vs society

      @@OzymandiasV2 While that's true, I think what fuels his psychotic tendencies is capitalism in the modern world, which is shown because his end goal is to find a successful consistent way to make income while blending in with the rest of the world. He was always a psychopath (similar to American Psycho) its society pushing him a certain way in the frame of the film.

    Atleast the tides are slowly turning.
    With Taxidriver and falling down people have argued that they were bad people deep down and it only just manifested, but Joker absolutely blew the lid off of this, and showed that *NO!* They werent bad people deep down, they are just products of a society that takes their worth and value, and when it comes to giving back and appreciating men for the value they deliver, they are either stepped on, or thrown into the meatgrinder to produce even more value, which in a few years wont be enough again and they'll tighten the screws even more, forcing the men to produce even more value, without ever giving some appreciation for their efforts.
    The idea of 'thanks for doing this for me, now f off and make more', is what i mean.

    Your breakdown of how these movies frame discrimination that different ethicists face to the audience is brilliant! Arthur Fleck & Tyler Durden, two white men, rebelling against a society that shits on them, becoming criminals & urban terrorist loved by their fellow outlaws can resonate with a black or Hispanic man who joins a gang. Race doesn’t matter because the struggles are similar. Good shit bro 👏🏽

    I honestly don't read Travis' attempted asassination of Palantine as politically charged, I always saw it as him doing that to hurt Betsy, at least on a subconscious level

    • @OzymandiasV2
      @OzymandiasV2  5 місяців тому +3

      i think within the movie it was definitely moreso Betsy but i think with the emphasis on crime and immorality in the city, targeting a politician is a pretty purposeful story beat. Its after the failed attempt that Travis decides to just say fuck it and take matters in his own hands and lose it all.

    Something that’s used in a lot of “sigma” “male doomer” edits is the image of K staring up at the hologram of Joi. A fantasy being chased but never caught.
    And they think “K is literally me and this this captures Male Loneliness” without realising that K is also the queer autistic kid turned adult staring at the fantasy of exploration, experimenting and relationships they never got to experience as a teen. (You bet that’s my self insert)
    K is also the lonely woman who wants that partner (man or woman) or to explore more of their sexuality but feels they can’t.
    K is also the Trans person who due to environmental restrictions, political climate, culture or imposter syndrome who sees what they want to be but is scared they never can be.
    Taking all of these perspectives would let us all see in the words of Joshi “We’re **all** just trying to look for something real.”

    What do we think about how male and female rage is perceived differently in media and more generally with people?
    I feel like recently female rage is seen as empowering and just while male rage is more often overtly vilified.
    But 50 years ago or more, male rage was seen as more just and female rage was seen as unreasonable.
    But that’s just my impression.

    • @OzymandiasV2
      @OzymandiasV2  3 місяці тому +3

      good question and ive had female rage movies suggested to me. i think characters like Amy Dunn, Pearl, The Bride, etc are all seen as pretty badass and interesting characters in pop culture. I think the main thing about Joker was how gory and gritty it was. Movies like Falling Down, Kill Bill, and American Psycho are way more “comical” than something like Joker. I think Taxi Driver was heavily controversial when it came out too

    honestly as a socialist feminist, these protags are dope, the movies portray perfectly the struggle, the anger activists, human aids and whistle blowers can face in a general public consumable way, be it men or women, it's that good old anger you get for asking difficult questions or the frustration when the entiteled spread ignorance instead of compassion, people not wanting to educate themselves becasue it's uncomfortable, the exploitation of improvished and vulnerable, the abuse and isolation of victims, the bashing you get for protecting them, it's good cinema in comparsion to shehulk or other liberal moneymaking trash
    your analisys is on point dude, i think you just coined a great new naming thingie with the male rage in quite the positive manner, i have only seen it used up to now to describe abusers, reforming it to show another side of the coin, the more admirable one, actual good role model one is a great move imo
    amazing video❤

    • @OzymandiasV2
      @OzymandiasV2  5 місяців тому +2

      thank you! i try to take a more nuanced approach than good/bad for my media analysis videos. i think these movies can be inspiration/warnings but theyre also cautionary tales and often end in tragedy for the protagonists

    • @doomdecepticon933
      @doomdecepticon933 5 місяців тому

      @@OzymandiasV2 the tragedy ending is real however cliche it can get on film, male human activists get executed often enough, they also die or face threats while performing journalism, the amnesty international petitions are a riot haha, tbh your avarge good ending is just getting depression and working with it, like the facebook content safety review ppl or anti-CP hackers, i think they could show in film the quiet persistance of it
      imo i think they should also make a movie about a guy helping out male sa survivors, freaking put the gosling guy there, he does a bunch of such roles quite well, get that ball rolling since the topic got trendy, like but also approach the unfaireness of the law system about sa cases, becasue holy fuck we need a reform for longer sentances globally is one, the other is inequality in how it's treated, male on male sa gets a fair amount of years, meanwhile male on female is blatantly treated as "normal" and the judges lower down the years constantly like we dont also pay taxes, meanwhile the female on male sa is still treated fairly atleast seemingly in US but the rest of the countries just go "meh", doesnt exist lmao, imo a lot of women also need to get arrested for extended psychological abuse of minors, daughters especially, the toxic boy moms are real and very dangerous, also the ones that hit their sons
      also also there needs to be a reform in how pedos sentencing works, i understand that the low years are there so the victims can report this easier but there needs to be more, like for fs everyones saying it but no one is doing it except femnist non-profit and last time in my country they tried arresting them for raising awarness against child mlestation and general public knowladge during a peacful protest, like even the freaking pedohunters guys, even after legalising themselves are getting shat on constantly
      personaly, as you said, the interpretation using approach of social class is best, the nuance is like a nice dessert treat from that sort of work, anyway if you ever get interested in reviewing geopolitic human rights/cultures, i have a tip, look at how improvished women and children are treated in general and then with who gets/saves money from that, see how many shelters, laws, law departments and nonprofits actually exist to protect what and who sits in the courtrooms, you get a good grasp on what that region runs on

    I loved Joker and Fight Club because it was a clear display of the modern reality. The dysfunctional and dystopian society where mental illness is hated, outcasted and worse refuses to conform to expected norms that are honestly more abnormal than the mental illness issues shown in the show.
    .
    Human beings are not meant to fight every second of their life to appeal to others, nor should they. Human beings are complex and come in many forms; much of which happens from the environment. This demand to force everyone to tolerate abuse or conform so they are tolerated will inevitably lead anyone to a state of insanity. Especially when you bring the financial relation into it, where conformity with the norms and being cut throat against your own equals success, it is why it drove the main characters mad. The ruling class demanding everyone under them live a certain way and behave a certain way, leading to abuse among their own, will create real Jokers and Tyler Durdans. It is why I sympathized with them upon watching the show the first time.
    .
    Abusing mentally ill people and forcing people into boring lives where there is no purpose or goals except work and consume will drive an individual mad and seeking their purpose, sometimes in the worse of ways, but it is inevitable. The ruling class wants the working class to stay robotic slaves while the working class demands to live life.
    Edit: Great video btw bro, another banger!

      “The central issue he confronts is how he, a white male who has enjoyed privileges all his life, finds himself suddenly marginalised,” says Hirsch. “The new world he inhabits is bewildering in a sense, and we can all relate to that. I believe he is a forerunner of the Trump voter in a sense. He is angry at the way society is changing and would rather upend everything by striking out” - The editor of the movie (Falling Down at 30: Looking back at the Michael Douglas thriller that could not be made now). The inclusion of hispanic gang members, an asian man who is assaulted for “overcharging” and “not speaking english”, the homeless being scammers, the black man being ignored after being rejected for a loan, the tagline of the movie poster, etc all mirror common conservative talking points about immigration, wokeness, lazy homeless people, etc
