Well, I disagree with you. You can totally hear the difference when Phil is playing, more clean sounding with less confusion. His son has a lot to learn from his dad but like someone else said average drummer right now.
I hate to admit I enjoyed watching these instrumentals more than the videos where Phil is singing, simply because he is in such rough shape. Bless him for being out there and doing his best, but as a Genesis fan for over 45 years, it's just tough to watch him now, knowing what used to be. But I am glad Phil didn't go the way of one of my other prog rock idols, Keith Emerson, when he realized he couldn't play any more.
I would have to agree the instrumentals are the best. And nice to hear parts of cinema show in there they have not played that in years. And Phil's son is playing just as well as his dad did. And don't forget except for the 1998 tour. This is first tour since the lamb lies down on Broadway with just one drummer.
As a massive Genesis fan, thank you for this, Mike. Throughout all these videos I've noticed that Mike Rutherford is loving every minute of it. Plus, he's also amazingly talented.
Amazing band. Great musicians. Also Peter, Anthony and Steve. Is very sad to see Phil with a lot health problems. I think that this tour might be avoided but is good to hear them again. Young Collins is very good drummer. Mike, Tony and Daryl perfect as usual. Phil all my respect for you. THANK YOU FOR DOING MY LIFE BETTER WITH YOUR MUSIC. All the best
My Dad aged suddenly before he passed on, but he happily remained an observer of what he taught me to do. Seeing Phil in this video makes me so sad but I am grateful that he could be onstage for these great pieces of music. My heart goes out to Mr. Collins, and I appreciate his massive talent as a vocalist and a drummer.
No doubt, the best band ever. Beetles, greatest, but stuck in an era, Genesis has no era, Their music is timeless and will be listened to much longer as time goes by. Old Genesis is so British and still feels futuristic. That music is still ahead of it's time.
It must be a really strange feeling for Phil to be sitting during the entire instrumental part. You can see by his reaction that the former drummer still lives inside him. But i'm pretty sure he is so much proud of Nic.
It is true that his current condition has limited him a lot. But his Love and his Soul were there, in front of everyone. In front of his beloved audience. Phil is a great man. And his teammates have shown him a lot of love. They are all magnificent. Remember Phil Collins, with his usual voice. He will always be remembered. And Genesis as a team will not be forgotten either. Remember Phil Collins, the way he wants: As the happy, sentimental, emotional, understanding, playful and friendly man he always was. And like the man, with the sweet, beautiful, harmonious, sentimental, emotional and powerful voice. That voice that gives you strength, if you are fallen. And it calms you down, if you're desperate. Great video. Feeling very nostalgic here. 41 years ago since I went to my first ever gig - Genesis at Manchester Apollo on the Duke Tour. They still sound amazing. Although... You may wanna change the track listing to Firth of Fifth 😜
As Nic Collins is the main reason I would go to see this New tour, this upload is a Godsend to me. His drumming lifts these songs to the stratosphere. Only change I'd have made filming these instrumental bits is I would've zoomed in and focused on Nic way more. :)

saw them at leeds on monday nite.. phil sat at the side of drum kit and looked up at his son do the home by the sea part 2.. alot of pride on his face ... and a son that has replaced him in this genesis fan when it comes to the drums
The Collins Force is Strong in This One...a beautiful set. I actually like the sound of one drummer again...stripped back. Gives Pops a chance to reach back for when he needs some extra strength for the vocals. Phil's voice will get stronger. Nic is helping that with his drumming. Each night they'll get better. Watch. Wish they would have gotten the original band back together with Phil Hackett and Peter Gabriel. To many arguments I guess? I love the 1969-1974 era of the band. My favorite albums are from 1969's first record "From Genesis to Revalation (1969), Trespass (1970), Nursery Cryme (1971), Foxtrot (1972), Selling England by the Pound (1973), The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974). Those records are my Gensis jams.

But wasnt Phil here and there on percussion, no? I have had diffucult time to focus to listen to these sort of live footage as there comes so much noise around and about with not the crisp delicate sound that could come out of studio or a real film team.

Phil's son is pretty good behind that kit. I wonder why they didn't add a 2nd drummer though? Was there a reason behind going with just one that was released in a public statement or something?
Chester Thompson was the live drummer. Phil recorded all the drum tracks. Because Phil fronted Genesis, they hired Chester to play live. Phil would play drums live too, but not the whole time.
They wanted to sound the drums more like on their albums. Additionally Chester Thompson wanted to be a full member of the Band what Phil refused ... this is what I heard

With all due respect to Phil, they really should have hired Ray Wilson to sing this tour, with Phil maybe contributing just a few numbers he'd do particularly well with. Wilson never got his due respect and it would be fitting closure to Genesis history.

In one interview, Tony said that they made him play No Son Of Mine and Land Of Confusion (the simply songs). When they saw that Nick played those songs well, they went doing tour. Agree, they probably didn't know how he is good.
There was something special about Phil behind the drums. He was free flowing and hooked into the music. A lot of other drummers seem very rigid in comparison, including Nick, as if they're playing by numbers in a very formulaic way. Real shame he can't play. The twin drum set was always a big part of the live show and to see Phil struggling to even sing is crap. I don't think they should have done this. Oh well, one last hurrah for the boys.

Great to see Phil’s obvious pride for Nic, but to be honest I feel that all the praise for Nic here diminishes the absolute legendary performances and playing by Phil in his prime, which is light years beyond Nic. Yes it it cool to see Nic up there with his proud Dad, but to me it’s blasphemous to compare his performance to Phil back then.
I understand what you are saying because Phil was amazing as a drummer but nic is definitely like his dad when he was a young man even the way he holds the drum sticks but people forget Phil's oldest son Simon plays drums also but Simon also sings which nic does not. I think it would be cool if they did one more tour with nic on drums but have Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett do it and let Phil sit out and just do Peter Gabriel Era songs. Since Phil healthwize is shot.

I must say i am a big Génesis fan, and Mr. Banks is my fav keyboardist ever, but... Today there are keyboards recreating the old Génesis sounds in all his Glory Im thinking about digital mellotron , clonewheels or new and reliables and powerful analog synths. Don,t know why Mr. Banks refuse them and play keyboards with poor character. He sounds every tour more ordinary.

Instrumentally speaking, the band is not bad at all. Too bad Phil's state doesn't match the rest.

My advice would be to go and watch "The Musical Box" as it's a lot less painful than watching this pension/divorce benefit tour.
Almost half the stage is for Tony, and he has the most basic keyboard set he ever had. 😳

Great to see Phil’s obvious pride for Nic, but to be honest I feel that all the praise for Nic here diminishes the absolute legendary performances and playing by Phil in his prime, which is light years beyond Nic. Yes it it cool to see Nic up there with his proud Dad, but to me it’s blasphemous to compare his performance to Phil back then.
I understand what you are saying because Phil was amazing as a drummer but nic is definitely like his dad when he was a young man even the way he holds the drum sticks but people forget Phil's oldest son Simon plays drums also but Simon also sings which nic does not.
I think it would be cool if they did one more tour with nic on drums but have Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett do it and let Phil sit out and just do Peter Gabriel Era songs.
