My old one would sound like a jet ready to take off whenever I was shopping for items or cashing in mini medals in Dragon Quest Heroes... and those were just in-game menus! But it got noticeably quieter during gameplay.
I feel like that scenario should've been reversed. Wouldn't it make sense for it to be louder during gameplay and quiet during something as simple as menus...?

That’s one of the biggest reliefs I’ve had. I tend to overthink a lot of things and over my PS4 slim sounding loud and then looking at this comparison I now know. The PS4 slim is a lot more quiet. And it makes me a lot more happier. So seriously thank you for this video it helps me a lot.

I realized that the optical audio port isn't needed since almost all HDTV's have a optical audio out that can be used for gaming headsets like my SteelSeries 800 with no lag so it makes sense to keep cost down for the customers.

I like how it’s a bit quieter, only sounds like one airplane instead of the whole airport flying away all at once. My parents’ ps4 pro has also had the same issue with being noisy, but still not as much as the original ps4. Also the power and eject disc buttons are just normal buttons, not hard to find anymore. Whoever designed that part confuses the hell out of me.
Is this a fair comparison? my launch PS4 was silent even playing for hours for the first year but then it started to sound louder, I mean, use and dust accumulation afect the launch console, a fair comparison would be an out of the box original PS4 and a brand new PS4.

+Mitch the toilet guy other words, if you look after your PS4 yhe better it lives. After i play the ps4, i turn it off and let it cool down, when i put it in it's own boxs with that wrapper that it was in when you first brought it. Then i put it in another box. So the dust can't get in it. But when it out though, might get tiny dust but not much.

I have a launch PS4, and playing most games it's impossible to hear over the fan noise. I end up just not having any game sounds and just putting Subtitles on. The fan noises give me headaches too.

Had my gen 1 PS4 fan die on me recently, which I had to change myself. The console started being really noisy (more than with the previous fan) which got my quite anxious. Thankfully, I stumbled upon your video which showed me it's actually "normal". So thanks for making this, 5 and a half years ago.

I always stick with the CUH-12**, they're quiet but do get warm after a while. I'm looking forward to comparing it to the Slim considering it was released around the same time as the CUH-12 series.
I have a Ryan on gaming topic for ya. Patches on games! Yes the patches improve bugs or add to the game but are developers rushing games out knowing they can fix it later with a patch? Did games back in the day before patches work or did they have bugs too and we just dont remember. Or are developers really using patches to update games based on feedback after release??

my ps4 broke in September and I was forced to get a Xbox one. While I do like how quiet it is in comparison to all the ps4s that came out, it's ultimately a shit console. Apps like Netflix or even the Microsoft store simply do not work, not to mention that I can't watch the movies that have on disc. At this point I'm just getting the slim version over the pro because I don't want an oversized box that generates so much heat, noise, and energy. Call it what you will but at least it doesn't burn a hole in your pocket.

You know that you can get a app to messure the decibels
The base-noise of smartphone mics prevents from any accurate measurements below 40db and even when you are above that, the app doesn't know the specs of the microphone, so the readings are EXTREMELY inaccurate.
xXYannuschXx i can confirm this. I tried it on my ps4 slim today, and the meter went nuts. it fluctuated back and forth between like 20 and 70 decibel. I think the air flow affects the accuracy even further. I tried blowing carefully on the mic and the meter went crazy there too.
you need precise high tech measuring instruments to get a proper result. not a shitty phone.
I have the original PS4 (CUH-1200 2015) and from the moment I bought it sounded like a jet that was about to take off,but I cleaned it today and I can’t believe how quiet it is. So I came to the conclusion that it’s not this particular PS4 model that makes that loud sound, it’s just the fact that since all PS4 original models (CUH1000-1200) have more vents for the air to come in and out, it’s way easier for dust to reach your PS4’s fan, and since the fan is getting heavier, it has to spin faster to reduce the heat your PS4 produces while you’re playing, creating more noise in the process. So,just clean your PS4 every year or two and you’ll be fine.

I've had my PS4 since launch and don't notice the noise unless I'm actively trying to hear it. There's a period when the fans will slow down after a certain amount of time too.
I was so used to a super loud startup when, but then I cleaned my slim and heard the cracking I was worried I messed it up
Ryan look at the dust in the air flow ports in your PS4 launch clean it out and it be quieter mine is launch model and mine is not as loud as your when playing uncharted 4 once a week I clean my PS4 and suck all the dust out of the ports with a hoover. Great tip use a dyeing if you got one lol

welshjay74 Careful mate, there is a small chance you could create a static charge using a hoover which could potentially fry your system. Its a really low chance but it could still happen.

This was an inaccurate test. You should try playing a game which puts a ridiculous amount of stress on the console. DOOM is one of the only games that turns your PS4 into a jet engine.
Uncharted 4 is one of the most graphically intensive, demanding games on the hardware. It was a good fit in that regard.
You haven't played DOOM. It's worse than Uncharted 4 for stressing the console. It gets so loud

wilson media whenever I play Fallout which is rare nowadays because I completed it and most of it's DLC, it does get slightly louder depending on where I am in the wastelands and what I'm doing, but nothing that's too loud. I've been playing Wolfenstein: The New Order recently and I thought it would be quite demanding but it doesn't seem to affect my console haha

Just got a ps4 slim today and it is a delight! Sold my xbox one s (only had it since late december) because the slight click on the fan annoyed me. I actually sent back five of them but they all did it! Whilst the ps4 is a bit louder than the xbox one s, its complete white noise and not clicking. Really great console, i recommend to all. The ps4 OG is just too loud. My friend has one and while it plays nice, it sounds like its about to take off. the ps4 pro is great if you have a 4K tv, and pointless if you don't. I also hear it is louder than the slim. So overall, providing you dont need 4K, get the slim :)
You don’t know what loud is until you hear that launch PS4 , I got my limited edition destiny bundle PS4 in 2014 and it was quite till about late 2016 when I had put in killing floor 2 on release day and I take off my headphones and I thought that my box fan had been turned on , FULL BLAST. I am looking forward to upgrading to the slim.

I think the big difference that most don't talk about with the slim is that it uses about 35% less power which saves you on electricity costs greatly

The original Xbox One wins all round in the noise department, Put everything aside, That Xbox is very quiet in all it's tasks including no matter what game or how long you play them.
So I'm guessing Xbox S is the same as it's bigger brother.. Just better designed and slightly overclocked.

If the system is clean inside, heat sink and fan etc with good thermal paste on the APU it will run quiet no matter what model it is.

The matte finish model 1 ps4 is called the CUH-1200
This is very similar to my new slim, it was very noticeable how loud the fan was and I was worried I got a defective one but this seems to be the typical noise when there's silence.

It does, on the same side as the on and eject button. It's like a firebreathing dragon on that side of the back when I walk behind the fan.

If you want your launch PS4 to be quieter then the best thing would be to open it up and clean all the dust out even from the heatsink and fan then replace the thermal paste, I did that and now it don't sound like a jet taking off

This test is inaccurate because ps4 is so dusty. I am sure if you open the console you will be shock to find a lot of dust. This dust prevent the air from entering and cooling the system properly. But for sure the ps4 slim is lot silency than the original.

That's really good, because I have the PS4 cuh 1000 launch. And it's pretty loud, I heard the slim is really quieter and I'm proud of that.
