- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- A loud and/or over heating system is commonly caused by a build up of dirt and dust inside the cooling system. This video walks through disassembling, cleaning, and replacing the thermal paste in a PS4 Slim.
What is thermal paste? Is it important?
This video explains it!

I'm glad you decided to do this video, from watching others when the slims originally released, they definitely changed a few small things here and there. I always prefer to watch someone work on the exact model I have in front of me.
Hope it helps!
@@VideoGameRestoration Sure did! Also helped me recognize that someone had been into this one before and lost some screws.. Just waiting on a new HDD and it'll be good to go though.
Literally just cleaned it out like this with a tool blade knife pliers and some messed up screw drivers and got it done lol thanks man helped out fr, now it's quite, now I can hear my babies cry
Glad I could help!!
Got my system all nice and sparkly thanks to you! Seeing the CPU itself is such a pretty sight honestly. It helped my PS4 immensely!!
Glad I could help!
I used to have a Slim, used to sound just like that. I now have a PS5. But I’m happy that you are showing this to people who want to do it themselves. + subscriber.
Thanks man!!
i noticed the "out" thing before you mentioned it haha. here in 2025! thank you very much!
Honestly probably the best video I w seen taking apart a slim and I'll probably be doing this to clean my own. Great vid man!
Thanks!
16:42 You can never have too much thermal paste 😆
So I redid the paste a couple times and pads forgetting some places where I could replace pads different times but mainly I keep overthinking if I did the paste properly tomorrow I will do it a final time after watching your video. You forgetting the small metal piece on the heatsink actually helped me to clearly see that if I just use the same amount you did and not butter toast it by spreading the paste out it will be perfectly fine. I also did the paste one time and forgot to put the metal piece in. I also see from your vid where I accidentally added pads where it doesn't look like you have them and am mission one in a place where there wasn't one. So I will do it one last time in the morning with the screenshots from this video thank you sir. Every video I have watched people each do things a little different but this video helped to clarify a lot of things and to feel better about not needing smooth out the paste to cover the chip by just tightening it down it looked great 👍 thanks
@@ganj9217 I hope your system works!
love the long format, it even has some AMR tints... just amazing!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love how when the game is thrown, he doesn't show the actual game, so it's most likely fake... he does the joke, but doesn't damage the customer's product...
Pretty sure it was a backstreet boys CD 🤣 I'd never intentionally damage someone else's stuff
@@VideoGameRestorationwe don’t know what you’d do.
Exactly so its rude to assume either way, checkmate, ever heard of dont judge a book by its cover? How would you feel if people called you a pedo just cause you look like one @COG4L
Love these types of videos, you do an excellent job! I appreciate you showing your methods and mistakes so we can learn from them.
I just bought a Day of Play edition to replace my regular ps4 slim but the fan pumps waaay harder and i can feel it getting overheated. It was pretty clean and I hit the vents with air before turning it on but I bet its just caked in there like this one was.
Please continue to share content like this! Also, your "out" isn't weird just typical of you accent! ^_^
Glad you found this helpful! And thank you! 😅
Glad I found this video I’d watched a couple others & was literally crying when I started watching this. You saved me! Don’t have thermal paste so about to reassemble without replacing it, if I have to take this thing apart again it’ll be to replace the fan & will def have the paste. Thanks man you saved my emotional stability today!
One thing I appreciate about the ps5 is how easy it is to clean.
Just got a Japanese slim PS4 mainly to be a Japanese DVD player, going to clean it up and re paste it and add an ssd to really keep it quiet. Seems like a fun afternoon project
Have fun!!
11:50 the moment I was panicked.. thanks all, really helpful video!
Thanks for your video - I took up the challenge not even having experience disassembling a ceiling lamp. Took me six hours, many confusions, many screwing out the screws because I left the wires under the metal thing. But your guidance took me through and though something was uneven and I had to use a fork to stick in the USB-controller stick, the playstation works wonders!
Ill be doing this over the next month or so. Thanks for tips!
You should’ve edited the screw part you missed in before you put the paste on, i wasted my last shot of thermal paste and now it’s done
Fr
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I was doing this to a recently pawned ps4 slim I picked up. I wanted to do the internal cleaning and apply fresh thermal paste and thermal pads. One thing I’ll do is replace the battery cmos battery as well since I have it apart. That part for heat sink was something I was wondering where it came from also. I patiently watched till you figured out where I needed to go. I didn’t know where it came from when I was disassembling my PS4. Thanks again for the awesome video.
@@obliviousmode575 I'm glad it helped!
Awesome vid. Easy to follow. Ive never taken stuff like this apart. But I was able to, clean put back together and it still goes! Thanks heaps.
thx so much for such an extensive video, helped me a lot
@@repti1076 I'm glad it helped!
Thanks so straight forward I felt confident to do it n got it done in less than an hour. I was left with two small silver screws that I just can’t remember where they came from tho lol. I made sure to look up the screw guide on Google and still came up with two extra ones but o well it’s fine
They say if you disassemble and reassemble a PS4 enough times you'll have enough spare spares to build a second system 😂 Good job!!
Thanks man. I got it done and the ps4 now sounds like it's not fighting for its life.
Ouwt! Ha
Coming from California, ya you definitely say out weird 😂 but it’s awesome and I might adopt it!!
Keep up the good work. I have many old broken consuls. Seeing you fix them makes me happy I don’t throw them out.

Hell yes! We did the same thing with the metal plate 😆! ! That's awesome lol 😅
You do say "out" like you're Canadian. And that amount of thermal paste was perfect. Either way, better to go over than under unless it conducts electricity. 😊
I agree!
Thanks this was very helpful
@strydom210 Glad it helped!
Super helpful video, had to look at a few due to different models but it was worth the 2-3 hours put in to clean it. PS4 is once again silent. 🙏
Thank you very much got my PlayStation back doesn't sound like a plane anymore
Great work!
Thanks helped me fix my son’s ps4
thank you for showing me how to clean my ps4 without blowing up my girlfriend's apartment. .
That's a good amount of thermal paste. I think people just like to complain. Lol
😂 thanks! They must haha
This ones super clean compared to mine, mine was fully covered with thick layers and chunks of dust absolutely everywhere ... Jet sounds, overheating all bad symptoms, decided to give it a clean and a new thermal paste the old paste was completely dried out now its running like new
could you do a video of the disassembly with a disc drive cleaning?
@@canadiansyrup527 Next time I have one in!
great video, to my life long Texan ears, yes, you do say "out" like a Canadian.
🤣🤣 I'm very conscious of it now and try to really pronounce that T
You say "out" almost like "oot"-- which to us Americans is basically the stereotypical Canadian accent. Lol.
Gonna give this a shot cause the ifixit guide on this model seems to be missing something out. The bottom cover near the power supply feels like it's stuck on with mythical gorilla glue, I can only pry the left side up.
@@SAK11RA double check for a screw!
Thank you for this clip. I will clean my device and change the thermal paste and follow the steps, but I want to write the type of screwdriver used in the video and the type of thermal paste

Maybe that piece under the bracket is to prevent shorting out the board?
Maybe 🤷♂️
Me and a can of duster go way back like Cadillac seats
I just unscrewed the top and never knew how bad it was , used a paper clip and cotton swabs and now my ps4 isnt making any noise 🙏🏽 it sounded sooooooo bad before
I did everything now my PlayStation over heats immediately after I start a game and I did every step with great caution and thoroughness
@taetobreezy if it's over heating quickly it's most likely a thermal paste issue. It May not have been enough
Man I am glad I found this channel, to have work done on my consoles. None of my retro stores repair consoles anymore in Seattle wa or sucks I’m going to attempt at replacing the drive in my Wii and doing a deep clean on both my ps4 pro, and thermal paste. Do you have pricing on your website.
That's too bad! You can do it! Cleaning isn't too tough. I don't have any prices laid out right now
This really help thanks!😊

I got that same exact tool kit
Good video, may I suggest to invest into a good quality small air compressor with a water separator if you clean alot of consoles.
I do alot of cleaning and it was the best decision I made hate can air and dealing with them.
Anyway awesome video will be using this video to disassemble my brother's ps4 slim. Thanks man.
Great idea! I've been meaning to move to another form of compression just haven't gotten there yet

My Playstation is lagging and freezing up when I'm playing. The fan isn't loud at all. However it does get pretty warm. Do you think I have a dust issue? How much does this service cost ?
@bradlethbridge5418 it could be, It could also be a hard drive or RAM issue. Unfortunately I'm not taking any new repairs right now
do you still do these? in the future i may send mine to you i simi cleaned some of it but im to afraid of breaking it and that lil playstation screw in the bottom won't come out

I was trying to do a basic disassembly, one that doesn't remove the warranty seal (even though I got mine from a pawn shop) a certain part fell out when I was cleaning it, your video or any other video does not show or mention it and I don't know how important it is or if the console can properly run without it, its a medium sized black metal part bent at the end with 2 screw holes in it, one on the bent side and one on the flat side, I don't know where it goes so I can't put it back and I don't know how or if it will run without it
Took apart my slim last year, still can't bring myself to clean the COPIUS amounts of dust caked into every nook and cranny. Things just been sitting in a bag on my shelf 😅
Hearing you talk I was thinking you are east coast, maybe Nfld. I sound similar
@@traxx314 Cape Breton Island! The official translators for Newfaniese to English 😂
I took mine entirely apart and cleaned it, i took pretty much all the screws out since there was a good amount of resin built up inside, it seems a small mostly flat metal piece fell out, it has a small P1 indentation on it I didn’t think it’d be a big problem but after reassembly I can’t run anything as it gets too hot and shuts off, the fan seems to be spinning, although I didn’t change the thermal paste, would that alone cause my problem, I also disassembled the disc drive as mine never could read discs, I assume that’s where the piece came from as I didn’t see you do that or the piece on the side
Hey! That piece is for the shell, honestly it's not needed. It's over heating still, you should really put new thermal paste in
How do you open the top cover? Why do you have cut in video?
@@vkrajinovic you mean the top shell removal part at 0:45 ???
@VideoGameRestoration yes
Hi how do I send you my ps4 because it sound like a jet and it over heats so quick
One of the screws in my console that holds the power supply is stripped. How do I get it out?
What kind of screwdriver do u use for the screws with the flower looking pattern in them ( like the one behind the warranty sticker)
The ones with the little nub in the middle are security screws. I have security bits in my kit! The kit I use is in my tools list which is linked in my description
Same for days of play ps4?

What's the thermal paste , what does it do and do you have to replace it every time you disassemble your system
It transfers the heat put off from the CPU to the heat sink. Yes you should absolutely replace it if you separate the heat sink from the board
@@VideoGameRestorationwould it be okay if you dont replace the thermal paste, would there be a huge problem
@XiEnVyx_VyPeRXx If the thermal paste has dried any amount (Which in a PS4 it most likely has) then the system will over heat pretty quick
