It really is a 'pen is mightier than the sword' world out there. It's amazing what people get offended by, especially when they have an image to uphold. And the people are gonna poke fun the way people do, artists are just fantastic translators of that. It's wild how someone in that much power can feel so threatened by literal marks on paper.
the most obvious and milk toast view on this film is that no matter what you do or what idea you show, that there is always someone whos offended or disagree with you the only thing close to being non offensive is literally just black scribble of nothing, until the executioner shows that its offended aswell
Because the people and the drawings of them represent ideas not a literal person themselves. I think the creator chose Christianity, as in the last 30-40 years, in the west, mocking Christianity has been more and more acceptable. (As it should be). The figure of the pope waking up, represents that, in the future, this might not be okay. Showing that artists which try to cater to trends and bandwagons to avoid offense, never win out in the end as years later, their works may be offensive once again.
Brilliant animation, it's really great, it's impossible not to say or create something that wouldn't offend someone. Everyone is so interrupted... and in the street one of them is the wolf of another and somehow they don't go to court or punch each other in the face. Once again, great animation, great message. 10/10 +1
"Everyone is so interrupted... and in the street one of them is the wolf of another and somehow they don't go to court or punch each other in the face." If you write, save that one. That's it. That's us. That's humanity.
Wow for once youtube recommended me an unexpected perfect gem. Im astounded, I actually watching this animation and agree with its message, its simple yet also multi dimensionsal. It does not make one paint nor paint a black or white picture which is rare for modern media. The comedy of it also at the end showing how the art piece offended the ecutioner shows how art is inherently offensive. All real art is offensive, in some way or form, it will be pffensive somehow and this anomation shows how it does not inherently also have to be a large political idealogy with the last bit. Great unexpected gem, great work.
i think the message of the animated short would be demonstrated better if the artists' drawings weren't blatantly offensive caricatures, but rather seemingly normal art that offended a judge by a minor detail. right now it just looks like they're trying to offend literally everybody, rather than, well, not. maybe the jab at the inspiration of this cartoon is more important, what do i know.
Yeah, I know it's a cartoon but it just doesn't make sense to me why the artist all chose to make offensive art when they knew they'd get killed from it.
There's nothing you can do to stop other people from being offended by what you do, but you don't get to use that as an excuse if you deliberately cause offense by attacking people less fortunate than you.
Judging by the most of judges being dictators/extremists/leaders and the art being caricatures I think the short is less about everything being offensive and "cancel culture bad" and more about radical groups and leaders reacting to satire/critique extremely harshly to the point of severe real life consequences
@@idcallname8410 There's no such thing as "cancel culture". That's just a made up term to demonize the freedom of association and to whine about about being called out for being a terrible person. The argument you're giving has in my experience invariably come from people who think that "Blazing Saddles can't be done today" such an argument is woefully mistaken. Satire like Blazing Saddles works even today, but it's because of what it's satirizing. Its racist jokes didn't satirize people who think "racism bad", it satirized people who make those very jokes. Blazing Saddles was, to use modern parlance, "punching up". What gets "canceled" is punching down. In short, Blazing Saddles is not funny because it makes fun of black people. It makes fun of people making fun of black people by showing how stupid it is to make fun of black people. THAT is satire. You wouldn't kick a defenseless puppy, would you? If you would, you're a horrible shit stain of a person. Attacking people who are less fortunate and less privileged than you is not satire, it's bigotry and abuse. But humorously aping the power dynamic that allows and enables the imbalance of privilege in the first place to attack that very imbalance, that's what satire is.
@idcallname8410 the only thing that weirds me out is frida kahlo, what the hell did she do to deserve being put in the same likes as hitler or putin or gaddafi?
the best word i can use to describe this video with is kitsch. it's so on the goddamn nose you can't call this "deep" or "provocative". the author literally beats your face in with the point.
I also love how we only see what offends dictators or let's say individuals in case of the Pope, but not what would offend religions or movements (I guess that what author tried to indicate). A very nothingburger.
I percieved that ending with all the different world leaders laughing out loud at that drawing in a sense that nobody cares about the common folk who do the work (The guy who pulled the lever in this case) if they're the ones getting ridiculed and laughed at, as long as it's not *THEM* who are getting the slack, meaning the commoners are the ones that have to defend themselves. Very interesting animated short indeed.
I really suck in commenting, and I don't know how to express my feelings at this video fully, but all I can say is that...this is very deep. Comedic, interesting, and deep. I needed a little help from the comments to see the message clearer though, but still, what a great video. And I like the animation style too. Well deserved award.
You cannot create inoffensive art, let yourself not be domesticated by fear, dominate with your art and let your emotions flow like a river, yet do not be swallowed by one emotion alone, for the water of the river comes from all walks of life.
Ali Farzat, he had his hands broken for drawing the president of Syria, it is a film in honor of him. How about recognizing that the message is powerful?
Ironic. Someone made a silly little film about offending people, and people get offended. You call it surface level, but apperently, it was still too deep for you.
god its so insane how nothing of substance is said here at all other than "censorship bad" which like woah great you read fahrenheit 451 in high school and only got the most surface level understanding of it good job no wonder every comment sounds like it was left by a middle schooler who thinks the hunger games is subversive i cant tell who every person is supposed to be but i think it would really help your point if they werent half just really racist caricatures
i have no idea what this is supposed to mean because "everyone will get offended by any art" clearly doesnt apply when the artists themselves are only capable of drawing new age caricatures of certain groups and people aimed obviously at making some sort of political statement, of course art is subjective, and that everything is art and yadda yadda but this doesnt make me feel sympathetic towards the artists, it only makes them come off as unoriginal one trick ponies
@@Atom_X. its not that censoring is okay, its that in a world where every artist is a raging political estet it would make sense why the upper crust is centered around censoring said artists, its almost as if we cant have artists that display the beauty of nature, of human imagination, why is it that artistic expressions always have to be weaponized
I'm all down for political satire but how is it not childish to compare people who have risked their lives in the past for drawing cartoons mocking ruthless dictators (Hitler, Castro), to....feminists? Minorities? Wow, so deep and brave for doing so. I'm not even offended, it's just a cringe take; more so to have been gifted an award. Looks like someone spent too much time in /r/edgy

Responding to my comment by calling me out as having "low emotional stability" is texbook definition of being a troll on the internet. I post my concern, and you simply join the conversation to insult me, instead of explaining what I got wrong. So I don't care if you get offended by calling you a troll. Brushing off my comment as "grammatically incoherent" surely makes you look like a reasonable person. Starting off with an ad hominem argument. Secondly, the argument is pretty simple. Putting feminism on par with political satire against dictators is just bad faith. Offending tyrannical political figures that got into positions of power by claiming to be omnipotent figures, is something that should be encouraged. That's punching up. Writing offensive content against minorities or discriminated groups is clearly punching down. No matter how loud any radical feminist screams on twitter, they are not going to get you hanged or executed and dropped in a ditch, like Hitler or Casto would have. Having them side by side is a low effort comparison to make, and brushes off excluded groups that get offended when they are prejudiced. Like, let's say for instance, having exaggerated big lips in a black person caricature, or crooked teeth in the asian guy. Those are just outdated stereotypes that shouldn't be encouraged. There's a lot of people out there that we can make fun of, people in positions of power. It's stupid to consider that offending minority groups is as brave as writing cartoons of Hitler sucking dick
Eh, this seems so melodramatic. This stuff only really matters if you’re Trying to get content approved by all of these groups simultaneously, and who does that?? If you want to be as broad as possible, you end up being so basic because you’re relying on commonalities, which become fewer and fewer in broad groups, that’s just how it works, but also, we can all make fun content thar’s not offense. Humor doesn’t need to be centered around making someone look bad.
fr, this short doesn’t really make any sense as an analogy. like obviously if you’re making a drawing of someone as a toilet or whatever, no matter their views or ideologies, are gonna get offended

@EIBozo the judges are a coalition of awful historical figures, then jews and feminists. The artist is equivocating the two. The point trying to be made here is that Jews and feminists are as bad as Nazis. You not seeing a problem with this tells me everything I need to know about you.
@@EIBozo Extremist people like feminists and jews, but the KKK and other hate groups are suspiciously absent. do you think Feminists and jews are just as bad as Nazis?

@@shroomer8294 Its only a term used by the most infuriating sociologists. Just because they have a degree in sociology doesn’t give them the power to change the definition of a word so that it can post hoc justify their preconceptions. Racism is prejudice based on race or ethnicity- simple as.

My take-away is that it doesn't matter who is in power, the ones who pay are always the artists.

Brilliant animation, it's really great, it's impossible not to say or create something that wouldn't offend someone. If you write, save that one. That's it. That's us. That's humanity.
If you can't win them all, do what you can. That's the artist's way.

I also love how we only see what offends dictators or let's say individuals in case of the Pope, but not what would offend religions or movements (I guess that what author tried to indicate). A very nothingburger.
I percieved that ending with all the different world leaders laughing out loud at that drawing in a sense that nobody cares about the common folk who do the work (The guy who pulled the lever in this case) if they're the ones getting ridiculed and laughed at, as long as it's not *THEM* who are getting the slack, meaning the commoners are the ones that have to defend themselves. i have no idea what this is supposed to mean because "everyone will get offended by any art" clearly doesnt apply when the artists themselves are only capable of drawing new age caricatures of certain groups and people aimed obviously at making some sort of political statement, of course art is subjective, and that everything is art and yadda yadda but this doesnt make me feel sympathetic towards the artists, it only makes them come off as unoriginal one trick ponies
And? Does that make censoring them OK? Bad art, just like bad words, is part of free expression/speech...
@@Atom_X. its not that censoring is okay, its that in a world where every artist is a raging political estet it would make sense why the upper crust is centered around censoring said artists, its almost as if we cant have artists that display the beauty of nature, of human imagination, why is it that artistic expressions always have to be weaponized

that being said, im not a coward and would be happy to debate you
in order to do this i think it would be helpful if you could define what exactly your argument is, such that i will be in a position to judge it. as it stands, i cannot find any argument in your original comment - only grammatically indecipherable whining about the inclusion of feminism and minorities in this video
@@ImpartialDawnYour adoring fan pfp nullified all of that shit you said. Bye.
