A lot of people think this is about AI and internet addiction, but I think this is a commentary on addiction as a whole. In the part where the protag is waiting in line you’ll notice that other consumers are talking to each other. Meaning most people in this universe probably use it for recreational purposes.
pretty sure someone already pointed this out, but something that really hits hard about this film is that there's still real people around Arthur talking to each other and hanging out, even though they all have the Best Friend chips, meaning that the chips are really only intended for recreational use and are typically only used as such. So the way Arthur acts isn't necessarily the norm; the dude's just really that lonely.
Yeah, it's... depressing. You can easily relate it back to real life. I know (some) people who are quite balanced with their internet and social life. Or to go to a different analogy, I don't believe I personally am addicted to Weed, I use it regularly and recreationally but have no issues when without it. I don't use it to cope at all times, 24/7, I use it for fun and for when i truly need it. Others don't treat things the same and it's rather sad, because those people who can handle their chips- or anything that the chip can stand in as a metaphor for- don't see the problem with it.
Yeah, that's how addiction works. The chips are an allegory for things that we consume for fun but are misused by those who grow dependent on them to escape their misery.
As a teen in the modern world, I already feel like such a person could never exist. Human interaction is agreed by many to be the most exhausting thing upon this Earth, yet it’s something no one can bear to be without. People inherently long for unconditional love and validation, but are also already so far up their own asses to care about anyone else. That’s why -if such an invention were to exist- it would be used by literally everyone, even if it was nothing more than a beautiful lie.
This might've been foreshawdowing or like that's his self in the near future, that's genius. I didn't think about how the homeless guy looks like him at first.

nossa, impactante ver que nem todo mundo parece cansado igual a ele, que usa para lidar com a solidão mas, o cara que roubou ele se parece bastante com ele
A crazy idea:
First they make us comfortable chatting to them- then hearing them- then seeing them irl- then… this! This is a development plan.
Lol i must sound crazy.
2:13 The guy just kept the default friends
This is unbelievably sad, but the timing couldn’t better.
When his foot came down he only compromised four of the drug bullets his total panic was uncalled for and unwarranted but as the old saying goes c’est la vie
since this one came out I came back now and again to rewatch it...every year, it gets more scary, for multiple reasons.
For me it's not just about addiction, but more about loneliness. Maybe it's my lonely side talking.
*wraps his tail lovingly around the video, his tail begins pulling the video closer to himself* thanks, dust you're the best...
what the fuck is this comment
1:28 me on friday nights lol
wtf bro shut up
Man this is such a good short film. I was so captured by the environment and the cheerful voice of Cami.
That was an incredibly sad ending.
I always love a good friendship story.
Not gonna lie, I would fall in addiction to this too.. I never had a best friend before. Only temporary. No1 invited me out, hang out at my house, or call me after school only for help
You are an amazing story teller. You gave us hope for Arthur and then ripped it away over and over. Your truly talented.
These comments are a perfect summary of most folks take on social media.
We saw countless people, all with this device, yet Only 2 people with a problem.
Yeah, the short is about addiction. The chips are an allegory for the various things that most people use for fun but some get addicted to.
THIS is a real horror short film! Only to think our world is getting this far..
This is beautiful... It's like an Episode of Black Mirror with the same level of excellence.
Love the subtlety of the cake only being one slice when he pauses
0:06 ❤...ive seen this to many times
😊 Yea, I think I'll keep people at arms length. And enjoy solitude as much as possible.
Reminds me of something you'd see on Black Mirror. Loved this short.
THeres an Episode in the first season that reminds me of this
I hope this doesn't become a reality... it's quite horrifying, an interesting form of dystopia that makes you think of how things might be and might become if we aren't careful. Awesome video!
3 yrs ago? Seriously, youtube...
This is so real though I was starting to get addicted to the AI and deleted the app just yesterday day night and found this in my feed today. Getting addicted to the flase reality is the worst. I plan to face my real life challenges by myself and of course stay in contact with my REAL friends. Gotta deal with my phone addiction too...
Please don't hate on this, I just commented this as a self reflection.
Anyone remember "The Game" episode of Star Trek The Next Generation? This reminds me of that episode.
One of my favorite episodes.
@@curlywavy18 Same. My all time fave episode was "Relics". When they found Scotty in a transporter buffer. Amazing episode. Well written and was a brilliant idea. Having been a fan of Star Trek also it made me feel very nostalgic.
Wow! Beautiful animation. Scary....yet such a true story about digital addictions.
Somehow it depicts the loneliness of a person who creates imaginary friends, and creates scenarios to be happy, because when he goes to out to the real world, everyone is occupied in something with someone else.
This video reminds me of JOI in Blade Runner 2049.
I was thinking the same thing!
At this moment, this video hits hard.
Either way, this short film was really great; depicts what this time lacks..real people communication.
apple vision pro
I didn't even realize this was 3 years ago! It's very much ahead of its time, and it very much reminds me of Character ai, see myself in it too.
Although now that i think about it, it was probably relevant 3 years ago too, its just more noticeable these days...
Now that AI has developed into another level, this video hits different.
This has these "Love, Death & Robots" and "Black Mirror" vibes. Great short film!
This is best presentation of future business.
learn to become your own best friend. Never be lonely again, even if you are alone. much Love, marty
And like any addiction, the user will not always recognize the danger it brings.
I remember watching this as a little kid, now I understand the video more.
Didn’t they post this video before?
@@lochmock9305 yup
this would be so fantastic as a black mirror episode
They knew EXACTLY what they were doing with that thumbnail.
That thumbnail pretty sus
I thought smth else when I saw it 💀
Fr
oh thank god I'm not the only one with such a dirty mind 💀
Honestly thought it would be about SA or something
I though they were umm you know what I mean
this makes me so sad:( it reminds me of character ai, bec i always use it to vent or pretend to be someone im not, it helps me escape from the actual world i live in when i never wanted to be there anyways.
