The eeveelution thing partly makes sense, Flareon can use quite some physical moves, while some grass types are bulky as well, which is because so they can tank enemies and leech seed them, as well as poisoning, making them sleep or paralyzing
That still doesn’t matter. Machamp is a fighting type Pokémon with four very-developed muscly arms! Flareon should NOT be able to hit as hard as Machamp, it has skinny tiny arms! Leafeon is made of leaves. Leaves are very fragile whilst Crustle is literally a crab with an earth shell, earth is very tough. Rather if Grass is bulky, it shouldn’t be more bulky than a literal rock-type!
To be honest leafeon having a high defense kinda makes sense because if you think about it. It’s hard to punch a leaf and break it because it’s so flimsy and light so if a machamp punches a leafeons tail or something. The leaf will just be pushed around
I think Gamefreak decided to fit the Gen 7 Pokemon with the tropical theme and so they made them slower... As for the Gen 8 slow guys, remember that all of those are Trick Room users
And to add to that, most of the gen 8 dex seems to be built around themes, so for them to make slow pokemon with trick room in mind wouldn't surprise me at all.
I like to think of the speed stat as “reaction time to trainers order” rather than actual speed. So purrugly, being a cat, has a fast reaction time and can attack before latios and Latias, even if they have a higher top speed. Thank you for listening to my ted talk :)
Except thats not true, seeing how if you flee or not is partially dependent on the head mon's speed stat. Plus, if it WAS reaction time, Latias and Latios could still strike Purugly *first,* because even if they react slower, *they’re jet planes against a big cat.* Cool to think about, *but no.*
Or it could be bursts of speeds or dexterity. A cat being able to jump out of the way of a coming attack makes sense. Also, Electrode is the fastest Gen 1 Pokemon, with a base speed of 140. Is it faster than a fighter jet? No. But it's able to do quick manoeuvres because of its spherical shape.
I consider it the time it takes for an attack to happen after it knows the order. Vikavolt, for example, is based on a railgun, and as such would take a while to charge its attacks, whereas purugly is a cat that is far more capable of quickly pulling off an attack as soon as it knows what to do. Sorry if this is what your comment meant, but I assume you're talking about the time taken between the trainer giving the order and the Pokémon registering it.
I think we interpret speed too literally, in battle speed determines who attacks first but that's really not about speed but reactivity. I can easily see a Pokemon being given an intentionally low speed stat to make it more reactive as opposed to being proactive
That was my thought. The speed stat isn't the Pokemon's top speed if they were to race, but reaction speed. Who is able to move into attack more quickly.
Well to be fair, ticks are notoriously pretty hard to kill, and wailord is lighter than air, so it makes sense to be able to just be deflated when hit.

@@Lunictd People have ferrets for pets dude. They are not very aggressive only to protect themselves. Even if they did hurt you it won’t be as bad as a giant ass snake that would probably strangle you in a minute.
That's kind of the point. Slaking isn't a Legendary Pokemon or anything, so they had to give it a hindering ability to balance out its stats. In fact, it's high stats probably came after the designers decided on the ability.
11:29 i think that makes sense. Remember, you do not know how defensive the husk that ninjask left behind is. And its apparently strong enough to whitstand all non-super effective attacks.
@DRIN HYKOSMONI yeah but Pokémon thinks logically, they’d make Pokémon strong or weak depending on their origins So there had to be at least a bit of science in there
Fun fact. Shedinja and Ninjask combined to equal Nincada's defense stat. The bug inside the shell combined with the shell is equal to the bug that had the shell still on, defensively. Also interesting enough... their base hp stats combine to exactly double Nincada's.
@@dontmisunderstand6041 but shouldn’t the actual bug have more Atleast by a bit. And then the shell would have a little bit less but they would still equal to nincadas defense.
I like to think that the speed stat stands for reaction time. Not how fast you are. Hence why vikavolt is slow (cannot turn quickly, planes take forever to turn around), but purugly is so fast (even fat cats can claw an eye out before you know they are attacking you)
There is an honorable mention concerning one of the Eeveelutions that should probably be included: Glaceon has a higher special attack stat than Giratina
On defense of Giratina, on his release he was meant to be the Beef tank of the trio. Hence why he has the highest HP stat and more balanced Def and special, where Dialga was more tank against physical and Palkia against Special.
9:58 this seems really weird but it actually makes sense. Tarantulas are suprisingly durable in real life and it is really easy to pierce an object that is both light and very large.
Michael: A pudgy cat faster than a jet plane is impossible Nyan Cat: *hold my rainbows* Also Wailord isn’t the king of size anymore, Eternatus stole that spot. R.I.P Wailord’s rein.
I feel like someone made a typo with Vikavolt's speed and no one has caught it since it's introduction or bothered to fix it. Like, maybe someone's handwriting was so sloppy on the design document for Vikavolt that they put 43 when they meant 93. I work with data analytics and have seen some horrible handwriting. 4s can look like 9s. You will believe it. Thumb's up if you want a Vikavolt with 93 base speed!
Alex Rosen I think what they could do with Vikavolt is buff their base stat total to 515 or something and redistribute the stats. I don’t really think its special needs to be that high, so it could have something like 90 speed, but only 120 attack and a bit less defense
@@zememerr2329 if it had less defense it would die extremely quick. That wouldn't be a problem if it was fast and strong enough to kill the oponent before the oponent could kill it so making it's sp. Attack lower doesn't make sense.

You get back on the ground, hoping it'll hide you from this... Creature. Clearly you aren't thinking straight. A long, snake light creature appears from the shadows. It appears to have horns and blood red eyes. It is... 6 FEET TALL?! You hope it can't hear your pounding heart, although you already know it does. It approaches you. Those horns were just ears, and it was a giant ferret! You sigh in relief, and feel better until you see what's in this creature's hands. Pyroar is my favorite Pokémon but it’s sad that it’s a special attacker... it doesn’t even get that many great physical moves for an adamant nature set up :/
Okay, while I do understand most of them, here are my issues with these lists. 1) Dusknoir, while it is a super big bulky pokemon, it is still a ghost. It does have strong defense stats due to its body, the spirit itself is still pretty vulnerable. Meanwhile, yungoos is a rodent that will eat almost anything. So, yeah, it should have pretty okay health. 2) Wailord's weight is ridiculous because of how light it is, it would have pretty weak defense. Its pokedex entries talk about it going down up to 10,000 feet with one break, meaning it would have to take in a lot of air, making it pretty vulnerable. Joltik has the ability to latch onto other, way stronger pokemon and survive the wear and tear. Therefore, it should have pretty good defense. 3) Nincada should have double the defense. Cicadas do have strong bodies, and when they lose their shell they are pretty vulnerable for a while, representing Ninjask who would move quickly, but would be much more vulnerable. Along with this, shedinja has the same defense as Ninjask, when you add those two together, it becomes Nincada's defense. This shows the shell that protects Nincada has been cast off when they evolve into Ninjask and half of its defense is left as shedinja, its shell.
I actually never thought of the defenses of the Nincada line in that light, but that makes so much sense. Pity that Shedinja's defensive stats do it no good on account of being a One-Hit Point Wonder.
No it's possible it just takes some setup in a double or triple battle. I've personally done it before to see if it works, and as far as ultra moon, it does.
About the Trapinch, Poliwrath situation. Normally, you put more force into crunching something with jaw. When your punching something, sure you may be tensing your muscles to hit it hard, but your using multiple muscles at once when you do.
No wonder why Bugsy’s scyther is a great battle. He has a pretty good strategy and scyther has 110 attack and 100 speed. He has bad sp. attack, and usable defenses. Hot damn.
Fun fact: I am currently in the middle of the Alpha Sapphire Elite Four, and am planning to use my Furret to try and outspeed Glacia's freaking Froslasses. I'm gonna use her since she has decent Attack and Shadow Claw, and has higher speed then my only other super effective pokemon.
The scyther one doesn't surprise me that much because he is a trade evolution and it will stay in the same level if you trade him and evolve him but yeah the trapinch one it's crazy
@@demi-femme4821 that's...not the point. The point is that even though a Pokemon stays the same level, evolving can still be a huge boost on stats. What you said has nothing to do with this.

And while Milotic is a good argument you need to keep in mind that Milotic is a huge Sea Snake while Vaporeon is a little Aquatic Fox.
It was decided pretty early on that all Eeveelutions were going to get a 130 base stat somewhere. In gen 1 choices were kinda limited. Also for anyone who doesn't know this: all Eeveelutions have fixed stats of 60+60+65+95+110+130, which are just rearranged between every different one

"Purugly faster than Latios and Latias"
Me : *Wait.... what?*
My fat house cat sometimes reaches the speed of light when I open a can. I don't find it so illogical.
My cats like every door in the house open waits by them while they're closed, and goes faster than a bullet when it's opened.
Can say, my cat (who is currently 14 kg) can move at hyper speeds and outrun a jet plane.
As a cat owner (sort of), this actually makes sense
My very liquid cat tends to evade everything and can probably run to Florida faster than any flight :b
To be honest leafeon having a high defense kinda makes sense because if you think about it. It’s hard to punch a leaf and break it because it’s so flimsy and light so if a machamp punches a leafeons tail or something. The leaf will just be pushed around
Let's be honest, Gen 7 didn't like the speed stat.
Yeah Incineroar is slower than Litten
gen 7? what about 8, with three pokemon with 30 speed?
I think Gamefreak decided to fit the Gen 7 Pokemon with the tropical theme and so they made them slower...
As for the Gen 8 slow guys, remember that all of those are Trick Room users
And to add to that, most of the gen 8 dex seems to be built around themes, so for them to make slow pokemon with trick room in mind wouldn't surprise me at all.
To me, it felt like half of the fully evolved Alolan Pokemon had speed stats of base 60 or lower
I like to think of the speed stat as “reaction time to trainers order” rather than actual speed. So purrugly, being a cat, has a fast reaction time and can attack before latios and Latias, even if they have a higher top speed. Thank you for listening to my ted talk :)
That’s- actually a really good way to think of it- 🤔
Except thats not true, seeing how if you flee or not is partially dependent on the head mon's speed stat.
@@justaguyiguess910 still wouldn't make it faster than the lati twins. Jets are waaay faster than cats in real life to so that's even more invalid
I think we interpret speed too literally, in battle speed determines who attacks first but that's really not about speed but reactivity. I can easily see a Pokemon being given an intentionally low speed stat to make it more reactive as opposed to being proactive
Totally agreee
So, the speed stat is actually reaction speed?
I could see that
I'm guessing that's why dragonite and pidgeot dont exceed base 130 speed
That was my thought. The speed stat isn't the Pokemon's top speed if they were to race, but reaction speed. Who is able to move into attack more quickly.
Still Vikavolt makes no sense.
Well to be fair, ticks are notoriously pretty hard to kill, and wailord is lighter than air, so it makes sense to be able to just be deflated when hit.

@@dontmisunderstand6041 but shouldn’t the actual bug have more Atleast by a bit. And then the shell would have a little bit less but they would still equal to nincadas defense.
I like to think that the speed stat stands for reaction time. Not how fast you are. Hence why vikavolt is slow (cannot turn quickly, planes take forever to turn around), but purugly is so fast (even fat cats can claw an eye out before you know they are attacking you)
It can perform acrobatic flying manoeuvres, so turning isn't a problem. It probably just takes time to charge attacks.

I like the reasoning for nincada's line that makes a lot of sense
@@ArthurTRead Agreed. So much science
