    What???? Nooooo, don’t dump it. Just distill it and you’d have 6/7 litres of perfectly fine 40% vodka. I just about died when you said you’re going to dump it. “NOOOOO”

      I know @KILLER STOMPER. I did grieve a lot. Yes, I could have distilled it as there would still be spirit in there. My concern was that I didn't know what possible off flavours and smells would be in there. I was concerned that when I made a new drink from it and it had a taste I didn't like, would it be from the ingredients, or the wash. This would make it difficult to then work out what was the issue with the drink. I did contact Hamilton Bard about it and they asked me to send them a sample of the wash. Even they couldn't work out what had happened as apart from foolishly not taking a SG reading, everything else I did was spot on.

    I'd have left it to clear for longer. I'd also have used a hydrometer to check gravity

      You are correct, I should have taken a hydrometer reading. I didn't as have never had a wash fail on me before as they are so simple.

      @@brewingadvice I use the same alcotec and the same clearing satchets sometimes. Never had a result like you had. If you had taken a hydrometer reading you could have distilled this wash and still had a grood return as your hydrometer reading would have been just under 1000. I stir up my wash with the yeast and also use an aquarium pump to pump in high volume air through a ss 3/16 tube to siir the wash up for 30 minutes. NEVER HAD A DUD YET. and clear within 8 days usually.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  2 роки тому +1

      Agreed @@janooms5535, I should have taken hydrometer readings. I was more shocked as the Still Spirits Turbo Yeast always came out like water after the finings, so when this didn't, I assumed it wasn't that good. If I knew about Bentonite back then I would have added some after the Alcotec Turbo Klar didn't work. That should have cleared it up nicely.

    A good thing to have is an iSpindel, they don't cost much, and with its constant tracking, you can keep an eye on temperature throughout the whole run. Using mine I can see that my wash starts out at about 25 degrees C then rises to 28 for most of the fermentation before dropping back to ambient. if you had that you could be sure it didn't get too hot. Also because the iSpindel is in the sealed bucket, you don't have to open it to check to see if its complete, just wait for your readings to level out on the app, and its good to go. less chance of infections overall.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Andy H. I did a lot of research on Spindel and the others out there. While the Spindel is nice and cheap, you have to calibrate it and it won't work as well if you get a lot of bubbles that rest on the Spindel as it can weight it down and then you get false readings. I decided to build my own monitor, so currently have a device that uses a Thermowell in the brewing bucket that then turns on and off the power to the immersion heater. It also has a sensor on the airlock which counts bubble activity. The unit has a small OLED screen that displays live wash temperature and also counts bubbles every 60 minutes so you can see when it is done. I totally agree that there is no reason to keep opening up a brew/wash if it isn't ready, so my device helps with that. I only open it up to do a SG reading when it has counted less than 10 bubbles ever hour for the last 10 hours. It works a dream! I am now looking to see if I can perfect the code and then sell the unit.

    • @AndyHudson
      @AndyHudson 2 роки тому +2

      @@brewingadvice I don't use my iSpindel to monitor gravity, I only use it to monitor the activity, watching the tilt angle, when it starts the same for a few days, I can be confident fermentation has stopped, then I can open it and do a gravity reading to confirm it's done. You can never have too much data.

    good movie sir, very relaxing to watch and listen to it. I noticed you only added water that was heated up to 25 degrees, no cold water, right? Because of that maybe the yeast lacked oxygin to multiply? And what I do with turbo yeast and so many sugar is, I put in 4 kilos of sugar and 3 or 4 days later the rest of it. Adding the rest causes a lot of "foam" so be carefull with that. Good luck and looking forward to your next movie👍

      Hi Henk, thank you for your kind comments. The wash was active as I kept checking it every 24 or so hours and the air lock was always nice and active. I am not sure what happened, but it is what it is. I wish I had taken a SG reading as this would have helped, but after 6 years of doing Still Spirits Turbos and never having one fail, I stopped doing them.
      Interesting idea about adding the extra sugar later, I have not heard of that. I might give that a try at some point.

    The gas escapes in small slow amounts when fermentation is complete and therefore the airlock will still bubble and the contents go off if left too long.

  • @Timbershades

    You did not, as far as I recall, state what you intended to do with this wash. All looked fine to me and if you were distilling it, then the fact it was not completely clear was largely irrelevent. I have used this yeast for many years and not had a fail yet. I make the mix of sugar and water similar to you (9kgs sugar/25 litres water) and add the yeast when the wash is at 21 degrees C and keep it at that temperature (+/- 1 degree) without any immersion heating or cooling and I get over 20% alcohol. I used to use finings but largely, these are pointless and I do not wish to add chemicals to my wash. Leave it long enough and it will clear by itself if you really want that. Throwing it all away was very drastic and probably a perfectly good wash. The fact it bubbles for 2 weeks is a good thing - every bubble is more sugar being converted to alcohol, and that is the point of this process, isn't it? Mine bubble for up to three weeks. I use a plastic tube from the wash lid into a jar of water - much better than a 'bubble lock'. You can better tell what is going on without opening the lid, whch is the downfall of covering with a damp cloth.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi @Timbershades. To be honest, I made that wash nearly 3 years ago. I have learnt a lot since then, and if the same thing happened today, I would not have thrown it away. Back then, I was used to my washes clearing to look like water. So, when this wash would not clear, I believed that there was clearly (no pun intended) something wrong with it. If that happened today, I would throw in some bentonite and left it a few days to clear. If it still wasn't clear after 4 days, I may put more bentonite in (after racking it off), or I would just put it in my boiler and reflux distil it. My setup produces 95.5% ABV ethanol, so I don't need to worry about a wash not being perfect. If I run anything through it twice, it will be nice and clean. I didn't have this setup back then though, nor the experience that I also have now. Depending on how much you experiment when doing this hobby, you can learn a lot very quickly.

      Hi Stephen Hogg. Very valid question. It is all down to personal preference really. Depending on what I make depends on how clear I want it to be. It is the same for sterilising equipment. Some go way overboard, while some never sterilise, they just use kitchen soap. When I do a Tomato Paste Wash, it never gets very clear, so I just run it through my pot still before I reflux it.

      @brewingadvice  11 місяців тому

      Hi, I used 6KG of sugar, which is the smallest amount it requires (it states you can add up to 8kg), so it certainly wasn't too much sugar. Is the yeast bad, who knows. It didn't get an infection and it did produce a lot of CO2. Instructions were read several times and even read out loud on the video, so can't see how I made a mistake.
