  • This is my second attempt at the Alcotec Turbo 48. Good news is this time it worked. It wasn't very clear when it was racked off at the end, but it distilled well in my T500 Reflux Condenser.

    I'm currently fermenting two batches of the exact same Alcotec product and I appreciate you leaving up the video for the previous wash which you had to dump.
    This is my first time brewing so the information in the videos and the comments sections are invaluable.

      Hi @redshiftdrifter, first off, welcome to brewing! I hope that you enjoy yourself and you continue for many years to come.
      Thank you for your comment. Take what I say and everybody else with a pinch of salt. What I mean is that what works for me, may not work for you. Same as, others may say in the comments what they do, and this may or may not work for you. Sadly there is no one set of rules or instructions that you can follow. Read and watch what people do (as you are), then try the different techniques and see what works for you. Then, try them slightly differently or completely new things to see if they are better suited for you. Don't do too much all at once as you are new and it may get too confusing. Take you time, and enjoy the journey.

    I got a miserable 20% alcohol from a week of Turbo yeast - it had stopped working, all sugar was gone, but sad with pitiful result. Will be adding bakers yeast next time as a topper.

    Multiply sugar by 0.615 then add the volume of liquid to that figure = overall volume of liquid + sugar.
    With adding finings I have found vigorously mixing (or, shaking my 5L bottles) it actually clears the fastest. Stabilizer + half of Finings A and shake well, leave 1 hr. Finings B and shake well, leave 1 hr. Flavouring and the other half of Finings A, shake well. After another 6 hours it's already cleared, in fact it is 80% clear in 10 mins after doing this. This is with a wine kit (Solomon Grundy wine kit "Chardonnay Style" Gold) and a completely dry wine at 0.990 SG. A more sweet wine would be more viscous and might take longer to clear.
    All the kit makers lie about the time it takes. Well the SG kit says 7 days to get 10.5% but, I make my Chardonnay up around 15% ABV and that takes 10 or 11 days, starting from 1.102 SG and using "Youngs Super Wine Yeast Compound for High Alcohol". Dunno what strain that is but it beat EC-1118 in a "Yeast Showdown" I experimented with so that Youngs stuff is what I will be using from now on. The SG kit had it's own yeast but that only fermented to 1.000 (from 1.102) when the Youngs on that same 1.102 SG got down to fully dry at 0.990. If anything I was being conservative on the hydrometer and it could have been 0.988 or 0.986!!! Well I'm on a diet hahahahaha

    Do you add in a fishtank heater to keep constant temperature

    • @brewingadvice

      Hi Stacey, I used a brewing immersion heater, but in essence yes, it is just a fish tank heater. Many people use fish tank heaters as they are half the price of a brewing one and are exactly the same thing.

      Thank you for your kind words. I am sorry though, when I started my voice was very boring. I hope that I am getting better!
      To answer your question, there may/will be small amounts of methanol in a sugar wash. It is difficult to say how much, so most people will throw away the first 100-250ml during their Spirit Run.

    I am now day 16, and original reading 1.120 now 1.010 on my hydrometer nowhere near the alcohol its supposed to be. I would have been happy with 18%, but as I said, no bubbles, no muck on the surface, and kept a constant 24c, and I will give this another go just to see, if these turbo yeast are more luck then what's stated

    Why instruction is not to use a fermentation tube?

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi, I think you mean why do they say not to use an Air Lock. If so, the reason why is that often a turbo yeast can be so active and create so much bubbles/foam, that the foam will rise to the top of the lid, then go up into the air lock & will push it's way out. This can cause a lot of mess. Personally, I have always used an air lock and have never had this issue.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  10 місяців тому

      Hi @@matthewlathum9312, Sadly no you can't use a Turbo Yeast for wine. Wines and beers get their flavours from the ingredients. A Turbo Yeast is designed to give high percentage alcohol with very limited taste. So yes, technically you could make a wine from it, but it would taste awful.

  • @aleccap5946

    Why doesn't it work ? I followed the instructions to the letter, and 3 days later nothing why ? Sugar correct, temperature spot on, even have a heater in the bucket set at 24, and its an off white colour and nothing else.

      @@brewingadvice its very frustrating when there's nothing other than an off white colour, I removed the airlock as I was expecting it to go mad but absolutely nothing, the seller replied it could take 24 to 72 hours lol this is day 3, its at a constant 24c and yes, taste of sugar and not much else. Thinking of removing some liquid and adding yeast as nothing should happen, if it does, then maybe the yeast was dead, but still within its sell by date. Just so disappointed

    • @brewingadvice

      @@aleccap5946, it is so upsetting when this happens. I have had washes that didn't seem to do anything for 2 days, then slowly started to wake up and then went for it big time. It can be a good idea at times to make a yeast bomb by adding some of the yeast to some warm water that has some sugar in it. Really though for these Turbo Yeasts, you shouldn't need to do that. I would say leave it for another day, but put an air lock on it so you can see if it gets any pressure build up.

    • @gary23jag
      @gary23jag 2 роки тому +2

      One big mistake you are making is using the immersion heater, surface temperature is killing the yeast. Try using the heater in a 2inch plastic tube sealed at the bottom and filled with water to transfer the heat, obviously the tube needs to be longer than the depth of the wash.

      It all depends on what you like really and your timescale. I must prefer a Tomato Paste Wash that can take 20 days or more. The yeast is under far less stress and you get a lot less off-flavors as a result.

      I'm staying in South Africa. Get it at my local brewshop in Belville Western Cape. Potent stuff. No after taste or smell makes lovely Vodka and Gins. Ferment max 3 days. To get it from SA would cost you peanuts as the exchange rate is zar 16 =1 usd. Cost here are zar 350 for 1 kg.of turbo yeast. No neutrants. Just water, sugar and turbo. No PH cheking at all. Optimal heat at 28 degree C. Pitch at 25 d.C
      Keep well
