Today we're looking at the historical appearance and clothing of Mountain Men in the American West. For this week I used the Library of Congress Archives, which allowed me to acquire an abundance of primary source material from the period. I also used Rufus Sage's book, a primary source account titled 'Rocky Mountain Life.'
About Man vs History: Man vs History is a UA-cam channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.
For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!
Music:
Track: Lost Native - Nat Keefe and The Bow Ties. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.
Track: Jazz Me Blues - E's Jammy Jams. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.

Its awesome that there is a channel that combines two of my biggest interests; video games and history. Good editing as well btw
Thank you, Julian!
Me too. Check out a channel called Invicta . He does history lessons with assassins creed odyssey . The channel goes over the historical accuracy of the game with walkthroughs of the games environments and the real world settings.
@@radarlovedr Just checked it out! Very cool. Appreciate the recommendation!

I feel like we're living in a Renaissance of historical video games hence why so many gamers (myself included) have recently become fascinated with history.
this channel is such a treasure
It really is! This channel is the ONlY Red Dead channel that matters (in my opinion).
@@GiveMeYourNachosButthead no
@Steve.. well, it's just my opinion! No offense to the other Red Dead channels, but none are well researched as my dude Man vs History. In fact, I believe he's the only one that teaches us history and actually makes it fun using Red Dead as a placeholder! I'm not a fan of people showing the latest updates, glitches or guessing what's next in upcoming updates and what not... Man vs History makes this game ever more fun with his content and knowledge!! At least I learn something.
@@GiveMeYourNachosButthead this channel and the strange man are the best rdr2 channels
Can we see a accurate ranchers/cowpuncher outfit? Would love to see it
Just go to Valentine lol

An overview of some better-known cowhands and their tools can be useful. Appropriate horse breeds can be helpful for some.

You know you are a next level Mountain Man when you hunt down a Grizzly Bear just by kicking it repeatedly! 😅👍🏼
He made eye contact with me. I couldn't let that slide.
@Man vs. History I also noticed that the Hooded "Amador" wool Coat from the Outlaw pass 3, looks very similar to the “Capote” photos you shared. Unfortunately there aren't any colour options like the ones in the photos.
@@kurunzi8614 Yeah, one of the subs brought this up to me, and let me see his character wearing it. Unfortunately you can no longer get it, but I was able to look it over thoroughly. Sufficed to say, it's a capote, but there are some issues with it. According to primary source documents, there were no fringes on capotes, yet the Amador has them on the shoulders. The shoulders also have a strange piece of fabric draping over like a football shoulder pad. This wasn't accurate either. All that said, it's always plausible that some mountain men had these little accents on their coats. It's just that the primary sources tell us they lacked these things. It's also tough because later sketches depicted capotes with fringes and shoulder pads.... which seems to be the artist's addition, or were based on more stylized capotes that might have emerged after the age of the mountain man. Regardless, the Amador is VERY close, and I think the minor issues with it don't overshadow it at all. It's a capote. I just hope, like you said, they add it back in with more colors. Thanks Kurunzi!
@@ManvsHistory thank you for the detailed reply, obviously I had no ideas of all those differences you mentioned. After seeing your video I have to admit I decided to give a try on the “Amador” coat for my female Native American character, and came out with a nice “Mountain Woman” outfit. At the time when I saw the jacket in the outlaw pass I wasn’t to impressed, but I have to admit it is now one of my favorite outfit.
On a curious side note, the word Capote is also the name of a old traditional winter style jacket in my home country of Portugal. And in some ways they do look similar and were commonly used by shepherds.

Glad I can be of service, Nesvy!
6:35 my parents gave me one of those exact blankets recently, neither of us knowing what it was. I took it because it looked old and is in pretty good shape considering. I didn't know what to do with it at the time. Well, I know what I'm doing with it now!
Hang on to it! They're worth a lot, and, unsurprisingly, are great blankets for keeping you toasty. Several centuries of use is proof enough.
When the voyagers married there wife would make them one for the wedding
I tried to make my Red Dead online character look just like Theodore Roosevelt
Of course. Gotta love TR.
Interesting, also some trader role low levels outfits I think look like comon mountain man outfits, especially shirts.
Agreed. I looked into that, but I couldn't separate the shirts from the outfit, so I had to leave them out as options.
@@ManvsHistory yeah, unfortunately we can combine role outfits only between each other, like top part, lower part with boots and it should be from the same role, only the hats you can use whatever you want, but those shirts look really cool.
Historically accurate Native American please!
Agreed. also historically accurate cowboys
The Lawncliff Pants and Brindille Shoes look just like stuff I've seen in various Plains Indian museums.

So far I've been just using the first trader outfit with a raccoon hat. But with this quide I'm gonna make more, way more trapper outfits!

Bro you were just actually kicking a bear's but😂 at the end
That bear was like "Nooooooo" after you just shot his elk best friend :(
Funny how when he brought up the revenant he was mauled by a bear 😂
My favourite hat for a mountain man would be the one Gus sells you for a coyote's carcass; it's the feathers on the back for me
I have always suspected that the 17th century mountain man was fond of kicking live grizzly bears. Thank you for confirming my hypothesis.
Trust me, as a history professor, I can confirm it's 100% historically accurate.
This was a very pleasant recommendation. Keep it up bro!
would love to hear more history on the mountain men, that was quite fascinating
I hope some devs are looking at these videos or contact you to make articles of clothing to enhance roleplaying in the game
Also love that we get to learn som history since this time in America is very fascinating!

Sweet!
There's still a few mountain men around, that live in Alaska and Montana
The TV show Mountain men is good viewing.
Good vid dude 🤠👍👍
The trap door Springfield rifle would be more period correct than a kragJorgensen bolt action ...
I wish they would add the Hawkin rifle,I personally use the Rolling Block, but it's too difficult due to the scope being a permanent fixture.
The Amador coat appears to be a Capote. It's just the colors that aren't right, makes it look like a samurai outfit
Great content man keep it up
Some early trader outfits also look really good. Especially if You just switch out the hat.
Hey man!. Great video once again.
I just saw your page and OMG, dude you're rad. I have no need for equipment anymore so I just play for cool looks. You just made it way better lol

Love it man, Your channel is great I am a wildlife Bio student and love red dead and the love of the outdoors! Keep the videos going
Thanks Sean!
I'd love to hear more about the history of mountain men - what they were doing, why they were there, etc. You mention the time of the mountain man being over by the late 1800's - but what was the time of the mountain men all about!?
I know this comment is from a year ago, but I'll answer it anyway in case anybody who sees this reply is interested in the history of mountain men.
In 1822, William Ashley posted an ad in a newspaper saying that he wanted 100 young men to go into the unexplored West for beaver fur. Hats made of beaver skin was the hot thing at the time. These mountain men were some of the earliest explorers of the West. In fact, after their career as mountain men ended, some of them got jobs as guides. Some interesting people you should search up are Jim Bridger and James Beckwourth.'
One thing the men were famous for was the annual rendezvous. This was where they sold their furs and replenished their supplies.
If you want to know what life was like, well, judging from the journal of Zenas Leonard, life was tough. Leonard and his men battled through starvation and Native Americans, and they lost a lot of horses and a few men. Their main source of food was bison meat.
Eventually, after a decade or so, the beaver population started to decrease, and people fell in love with the latest trend, the silk hat. The last rendezvous was held in 1840.
I hope this helped to sum it all up.
@@davisdenver6756 Thank you! Certainly helpful :)
I think I did it justice for a mountain man outfit
My outfit
Feathered flop hat
Pitman coat (forgot what outlaw pass it was from)
Neckerchief
Sheepskin vest
Everyday overshirt
Farnholme bandolier
Buckskin pants
High top moccasins
If I could attach a photo, I would
Sounds perfect!
I have never played RDO, nor have I had much previous interest in the west/cowboys etc. But these vids are so well made and put together that I've found myself working my way through the entire playlist 😅 top stuff 👍
Aw man, you should get it. I wasn’t much interested in the western era until I started playing it. It’s usually on sale.

Historically accurate Bounty Hunter outfituri please
I like using the novice trader outfit with a sobol hat. I feel like a fur trapper from the 1890s with the newer boots and cotton pants. The fur trade still is a thing, just not as common as in the early 1800s. Great video as always! Also can you do historically accurate highway men/ coach robbers (or just historically accurate outlaw outfits) It would be much appreciated!
Another great video!

I like to wear the outfit that you’re using in the intro. In the movie ‘The hateful eight’, the New Zealand woman is basically wearing that same outfit so it seems pretty common and well known that this outfit is historical
The fact that you said jeremiah Johnson just made my entire day.

I like bringing a pack horse with me into the wilderness, to carry more pelts, 2 pelts of either bear, elk or moose, and up to four turkeys 👍
The new Outlaw pass has a hat and coat that would work perfectly for a Mountain Man character
It would be cool for you to make a historically accurate oregon trailee video! Love your vids , btw.

Dude, I love ya! Another amazing video as always, but this one is one of my favorites, cause my love for Mtn Man lore. I’ve been off Red Dead for a couple weeks now; mainly cause I’ve been highly into Assassins Creed Valhalla which satisfies my Viking/Norse love. But I gotta get back into Red Dead to change up my characters outfit lol. I know you mentioned awhile back that you’re into Scotland/Ireland medieval history as well, well man, next year there’s gonna be a “Druid” dlc for ACV and I was thinking you may like that. It’ll be based in Ireland!
Thanks Goonie! For sure, I'll have to keep my eye out for the Valhalla expansion.
