FINALLY someone who is teaching how to do this finish! ❤❤❤❤ I just bought these products and since I’m super new at anything paint I was so confused at Home Depot so if you are ignorant like me know this.. Rugged Tan will be found under the Behr paint colors along with Natural Twine. I was looking under Gliden for like 15 min. It’s not there. The behr paint samples are in the desk with the workers. I got the semi gloss- advice of the worker. The code for Natural Twine is s310-3 and Rugged tan is N90-4, in case you really can’t find them like me lol I can’t wait to get started on my table! Fingers crossed!!
I finished two dressers following your directions and they are beautiful ! Now I'm working on a table and I keep coming back to your video for reference !
You are so talented. Thanks for the tutorial. I painted my Great Grandmother's dresser recently - cut off the curly Q bottom and it looks modern and amazing. Thanks to your videos. 😊
I can’t thank you enough for sharing your tips with all of us! I had a very old dining set and credenza that I used this method on. It turned out beautiful! I feel like I have new furniture and was able to keep using the set my mom gave me years ago.
Omg i just finished glaze, on a free bedroom set I got on Facebook market place for free. This works! I’ve never tried a faux finish of any kind!I wish I could post photos, i bought the yellow but it looks so good I’m afraid to mess it up. The supplies were around 100 all from Home Depot but I used every little for the entire bedroom set. When she says use a little glaze she means it. Thanks so much for a great video.
My husband and I have been renovating our home for over a year. We are finally painting and staining Cabients. We loved your video so much we bought enough paint and supplies for our all of our Cabients. We’re doing our kitchen, pantry, bathroom vanities, and built ins. It’s been a process the worst part is brushes shedding lol. Can’t forget the cats stepping on the Cabient when they are drying 😂😅.
Hey Shannon! Fellow Georgian here. I finally tried your technique on a dresser and nightstand! I am in love. Thank you , thank you!!!!! So professional looking.
What a *God wink* - this literally popped up on my feed today and I am on my way to pick up bar stools from someone who wants me to paint them with this very finish! You are a blessing. Heading to HomeDepot shortly! Thanks so much! Have a JOY filled weekend!
I have sea drift furniture but it looked very gray next to a warmer piece I had. I used rugged tan to "tan wash" (I learned tan-wash from you too) the warmer piece looks so good and now blends nicely with the pottery barn furniture. Thank you!
I was planning on slapping some paint on my bedroom set but now I’m totally taking a step further and doing this wool like finish! So glad I came across this channel❤
Im doing bathroom cabinet in this technique so i was going to reference back to one of your old videos for refresher course and then I see your notification and was like "Come through Shannon with the prefect timing!" I cant wait! Thank you for all your amazing tips!
Wow, I learn so much from you. Thank you, thank you, because of you I started to refinish my dining room suite and it turned out fantastic, So far so good, buffet is done, I’m on to the poly topcoat now. Hope I don’t screw it up at this final state. 🤣🤣. Onward to the table…..
Did this today on a textured balustrade coffee table and matching end table, absolute gorgeous finish!! Just a quick tip the glaze does not like to overlap so if you accidentally get a bit on a side your’re not working on yet clean it before it dries and you’ll have a beautiful clean finish.
What a smart idea Shannon with sample boards for certain finishes..and this Faux Grass ..faux Linen technique is Soo beautiful... thank you for sharing 🥰👍
This is so incredibly helpful! We have a PB table in driftwood and I love it. Unfortunately, there were several damaged areas from a recent move. I’m thinking I’m just hoping to re-do the entire top using your method so it’s back to new!
I was not about to subscribe to yet another channel; however your detailed instructions - well they are excellent. So yes, I am subscribing. :) Cheers!
Thanks so much for this very informative video!! I’ve been wanting to try this technique and this tutorial is the best! Thank you! Off the the garage! 💕
I finally found someone doing this look. I will work on my cabinet, do I need to sand them down with orbital sander before applying a primer or just use the liquid sandpaper?
Hi Shannon. I noticed in your table top video you used a whisk broom to spread the brown glaze all over while in this one, you just use a fluffy brush (or deck staining brush) for the brown glaze. Is the brush a new and improved technique to achieve this pottery barn look? or do you still recommend using the whisk broom for larger surfaces such as table top? Thanks for your videos!! They’re so helpful!
Thank you so much for posting this! When using the fluffy/deck brush, do you neep to occasionally wipe off excess glaze before continuing to brush the glaze out?
Yes I frequently do or I dab the deck brush on the next section to use it up - see the free masterclass series I posted for more even more details - ua-cam.com/video/G8apcAxlnFg/v-deo.htmlsi=uyu1FG_AVKuMG4ov
Just found this video and it is exactly the look I want, however I am having a hard time finding the color Rugged tan in Glidden. Even on their website it does not come up. Is there a substitute you could recommend please?
Hi. Your an excellent teacher and communicator about these projects. I’m having drying issues with the oil based glaze. Been ne’er 24 hours applied over the semi gloss base and the glaze is still tacky to touch after 24 hours. In my house at 70 degrees ! Is this normal ? Can say’s 4 hours dry time.
Appreciate your videos so much! Love your style and teaching. Currently working on a dresser set using this technic. Would you be able to recommend a Lowe's or SW paint color for they dry-brushing yellow color? I'd really appreciate. The pieces look so good now, I'd hate to mess it up on the nearly last step. Thanks for all you do!!
Hi! Can you tell me the color yellow you go back in with to dry brush furniture & the finish? I have kitchen cabinets that are the color dockside.. Any suggestions for my kitchen table top for paint and glaze. It a like a dark grey, with brown. Stainless appliances ….. black stove and hardware. Wish I could send a pic. I’ve been covering this up this table for years trying to figure out a color.
Hello there thank you for sharing this awesome idea! I’m trying to give this look to an IKEA sideboard (Ersnas) but since its made out of a plywood material I’m not sure if I should use the water based primer? Please help with any tips or advice you might have I would highly appreciate jt 🙏🏼 TIA
I absolutely love your work. You make it look so easy. I have a question. I bought a solid oak table and it was in perfect condition except a tiny hole in the top. I did 2 Coates whitewash and then I filled it with white wood filler then stained it. It left that area super dark. Do I just sand that off and dig it (gently) out of the hole to get rid of the dark mess? ♥️
Hey! That’s frustrating to have happen, wood filler is extremely absorbent which is why you generally need to prime it before painting, if I were you I would try to paint over it to match your table color and then clear coat it all, you can mess around with color combos to see what works best, im sure you already are familiar with the faux wood looks here on the channel and one of those might match well 🖤
Love that I found your page! Trying to stain/paint some pine shelves to match the pottery barn "smoked gray" could this method work on wood too? Same process?
This is a beautiful finish. I tried to get the Rustoleum decorative glaze and it’s discontinued 😢 I live in a small town so it couldn’t even be ordered in. I also live in Canada. What would you recommend as an alternative?
Hi from Canada 🇨🇦- love your channel! I can’t find Briarsmoke in gel stain up here at our HD - only in regular stain. Would that work over paint? Or would you recommend blending two gel stains together- if so which two stain colours would you suggest? Thanks!!
Really love this look! We are trying to do the same but running into a problem finding the Rust-Oleum Decorative Glaze. Any suggestions for a substitution?
I love this finish. My problem is finding the right products here in Germany. Especially glazes, and gel stain I can’t find. Any idea what I could use instead?
Well now that I’ve been doing it longer I’ve figured out I can just use a cloth and dry off the brush as needed. Check out the masterclass series if you haven’t yet - ua-cam.com/video/G8apcAxlnFg/v-deo.htmlsi=AwFkQWs_Un8cDzSD
Thank you what are you do if you put too much gel stain on & it dried? Do you have to paint over? Also, how do you get it from? Not looking so shiny finish? Thank you thank you.
Love this finish. I’m redoing pieces in my home and super newbie at all of this. I want to do this on some of my side tables, just want to clarify that using an oil base top coat over water base paints is acceptable?

Love this! I am currently using your technique on a dining room table. Everytime I apply poly to it it pulls some of the glaze off and leaves a noticeable brush mark. The glaze is allowed to dry for several days What am I doing wrong?
I'm back with more questions haha! Would you recommend and oil based poly for a bathroom vanity? We have the Sausalito bedroom furniture but I'm hacking a vanity to match the finish for an adjoining bathroom.
This is awesome! I love the finish. If I want my finished color to be a little darker or more brown, would I use a darker base color, or leave on more glaze? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!
@@MandyDupree1 I’m going to practice on a small side table using the base color she suggests.I will go from there as to whether or not to use a darker base color. I had to order the glaze. Hopefully, I’ll get started this weekend.
Did you use rugged tan for the dry brushing after the glaze? I was seeing a comment talkimh about twine and unsure if thats needed. Im finishing my second coat of rugged tan on my piece now and then to glazing,
Im using a sample size from Behr called natural twine and dry brushing is just barely getting any paint on the tip of a chip paint brush that has a more jagged shape and just barely brushing it over the piece 🖤
Have you ever thought about doing this with retique-it liquid wood products?? I think I’m going to try to use your process with their products . I think their products will compliment your process very well . Since it’s made from real wood it’ll have a more realistic wood feel. If you ever decide to do a video with their products I want to be the first to know . I also think it’d help you get even more viewers because the retique it online community is huge .
Hi! I have a black dining table that I want to do the gray wash on. Can you give me tips on how to start. Do I sand first or can I just prime first? I don’t believe is solid wood. Please advise. Thank you Barbara
I’m about to tackle a 8’ dining table using this technique. I’ve only used water based topcoat and I’m a little scared to use oil base as I don’t want to mess this up…. Any helpful advise with working with oil based topcoat would be greatly appreciated. Can you use a roller or brush on only? Thanks!
It’ll look so beautiful and you’ll be so glad you did it! You’ll need to use a natural fiber paint brush or a roller made for oil based polyurethane. The least expensive thing to use is a chip brush, but anything made for oil based finishes works fine since the oil based topcoat levels so well. I would do two coats for a dining table, 3 or 4 if children use it often and are crafty 💕
HELP!! I applied way too much Java stain and it is alot darker than I wanted. Do you have any ideas how to fix this? Do I need to start all over with step one of using liquid sandpaper, then prime again etc.?
I did the same exact thing yesterday and I don’t want to start over but afraid I might have to. Hopefully Shannon has a few tips/tricks to help lighten my table.
You can sand it off a bit and repaint with the tan or you can try to dry brush with just the tan (I’ve done both with good results) or you could even use some paint thinner or mineral spirits and rub the stain off a bit 🖤
You can sand it off a bit and repaint with the tan or you can try to dry brush with just the tan (I’ve done both with good results) or you could even use some paint thinner or mineral spirits and rub the stain off a bit 🖤
Same here, I applied too much java stain, its too dark and stripey, and I have overlap on front corners, I did my headboard. Do not overlap the stain, wipe it off before it dries, it will look terrible...ugh
Hi, I’m new to painting Did you allow the primer to dry before adding the rugged tan? If so, how long does the primer need to dry? Do the rugged tan need to dry before you add the Java?
Hi! Yes, each layer needs to dry fully, usually I can do the primer and paint the first day and then I do the glaze on day two and then that takes at least a day to dry and then I do the dry brush and clear coat on the same day. So painting and waiting over the course of 3 days total
One more question. Have you done this look with grey? And if yes grey and what glaze? Or should I try the polyurethane and grey paint mix that you showed in a video
🖤 yes I use half poly and half grey paint to create a water based grey glaze - I do have a video doing grey with oil based - here is the oil based video for now ua-cam.com/video/Unce_QuXoJ0/v-deo.html
Yes 🙌 I’ve had many ppl email me showing their kitchens but I suggest using an oil enriched paint as your base color and definitely do a few coats of clear coat to protect it

Thanks for the information. What you do and share is very immpressive.
Same here, I applied too much java stain, its too dark and stripey, and I have overlap on front corners, I did my headboard. Do not overlap the stain, wipe it off before it dries, it will look terrible...ugh
Awesome as always, thanks for sharing.
Is there a third video for the third board? I’ve seen this and the gray video but can’t find a third. Thanks! 0:01
Great work. I like that you use cheaper paints.
Hi, I’m new to painting
Did you allow the primer to dry before adding the rugged tan?
Thank you ❤️
Wondering if the base color coat works for both brown/gray finish?
I want to try it both in a 2 different dressers
Does the tan layer need to be fully dry bfr you put glaze on it?
What did you use to dry brush? Was it more of the tan paint?
I was just thinking of that too… glad someone asked
It’s a yellow color called natural twine from Behr, just a sample sized flat sheen from Home Depot
Can this be done on kitchen cabinets and be durable to last years??
Yes 🙌 I’ve had many ppl email me showing their kitchens but I suggest using an oil enriched paint as your base color and definitely do a few coats of clear coat to protect it
Is there anyway to stop the yellowing of top coat? Maybe if you put. Water base on top of oil base? I think you are so talented, ametur here
Will this work on MDF board after the plastic/melamine coating is removed from a cabinet,?
