Sand paper 220 and 400 grit
Clear shellac
Benjamin Moore Advance Satin finish in color Bar Harbor BIEGE (sorry I accidentally said gray in the video)
Rustoleum Decorative Glaze
2.5 inch angled brush
4 or 5 inch Deck Staining Brush
Rubber dog grooming brush
Snow scraping brush (hacked)
Foundation makeup brush
Crevice cleaning tool/brush
Shamwow cloth
- Biggest takeaways from part 1 -
Make sure your surface is the same sheen all over before paint goes on (either Satin or Semi Gloss) You can achieve this by making sure to sand with a higher grit like 400 and then sealing with clear shellac or primer. Sometimes I have to spray 3 coats of clear shellac on raw wood areas where I have sanded through the old finish or used wood filler.
Use less glaze
Always use the deck staining brush and add dabbing into your technique to blend the glaze more evenly
Use a foundation makeup brush for small areas
Use dry brushing with several colors to pull your piece together and hide flaws

Let me start by saying I love how you paint, I love your paint recipes, your style & all your special tools & your personality overall.
I do the pottery barn painting like you do & I even use some of the same “special tools” you use to make that happen. I Love doing those.
I am trying to start a small refinishing business, and perhaps a UA-cam channel as well. I started this over a year ago, but I had to put it on hold for a little while to help my daughter. She lost her battle to cancer on February 21st. Painting is my Therapy.

As an old man who has been doing this finish for at least 40 years, I am very impressed with you. This in no way is "new" or novel. It goes back even further than Versailles.
I have never dry brushed with a highlight though, but I take your word for it and will have to see for myself. Sooo MANY don't understand this, but you have indeed mastered it. I won't reiterate the mistakes I see others do now. Most are terrible, but you have mastered it.
One thing that really irks me is graining the wood horizontally when it obviously should be vertical. The sides of a dresser like this should run up and down, NOT, left to right. You understand this.
I DO go a step further. Example, if I have a door front with mitered corners, I actually tape those diagonals off, wait 3-4 days to dry, then come back tape it the finished part, then glaze those verticals. Yes, it is a pain.
YOU most certainly have to try using a "graining tool", less than 10 dollars. The effect is fantastic. But as you will see, you will have to feather it out since the dark glaze against the light paint is too much. I can already see you would have NO problem with it.
Not so much this graining technique, but have you ever thought of doing some "fly specks"? They add a lot if they are not overdone.

@rockshot100 Clearly you are very knowledgeable about furniture refinishing. I want to try this technique but I'm confused about "graining" mentioned in your comment. When I look at the piece in this video, the glaze is applied to the sides horizontally. I would have applied the glaze vertically, as you said. What did you mean when you said, ...NOT, left to right. You understand this."? Also, would you mind sharing on the graining tool? Where can I get one? Thank you.
Yes! I thought it’s just me that is bothered by horizontal graining on the sides and the frame of the dressing. I saw someone taping off and do mitered corners and it looks professional. Way way better than this! And also I do own Sausalito furniture from PB and it looks nothing like this finish to be honest, so I am not sure why it’s called “a PB dupe”. With that being said, I do like this kind of refinishing, and enjoy these videos.
I was thinking the same. I used to do this 30-40 years ago. Glad there's a revival. There's a lot of finessing...buf fun and worth it. It's shocking what glaze can do over paint.

I will try this but do the aggressive, hard with the brush and take as much stain possible, then soften everything at the end with those green soft rollers.

It's a Drexel piece I refurbished 8 yrs ago and I never liked the dark stained faux wood finishvI did on it. This piece came out awesome. I used to do this 25 years ago. I did my mom's bedroom set but I did not take any pics of it came out beautiful.

(Maybe some did?) you were the first to do this copycat PB finish after you went into their store and really worked hard on figuring out the colors to use, technique , etc.. Then so generously shared it with the world! I have done a few PB dupe pieces and they sold within a day! ❤

I'm wanting to do this finish on the base of my pedestal dining table but with the top sanded down to bare (maple) wood and paint washed. Have you ever done that combination either on a table or dresser? It will be too much work to get the base sanded down to bare wood I think.

I am have used this technique on a bathroom vanity…can’t wait for the 2nd series of the Masterclass. I am getting ready to create this technique on a stair handrail. I am trying to match white oak floors, and suggestions you can make for paint and stain color to match white oak?

1. Would you be able to share the link of the snow brush and/or dog grooming tool you use? I want to make sure to get the same ones as you so the bristles are exactly the same!
2. I’m planning on doing this to our kitchen island, which is currently stained darker. However, I plan on building the island out to have finished sides versus the builder grade finish. Should I prime all of it before painting to help ensure the same sheen or what would you suggest doing?

I love to see things and techniques come back around. We did this back in the 70's. It was called antiquing. I like the dresser.

Love this, but we know longer can get Rustoleum Decorative Glaze in “Java Brown” or any of their colours. Do you have alternative for a glaze that would have the same tone and was a glaze ? 😊

The ice scraper looks so much better than the kid broom. I found that difficult as it has too many rows of bristles

Great master class Shannon! This is such a popular trend on social media (comparable to the DIY Wife base), you just don’t typically get credit for it. But I always give you and your channel a shout out when featuring this technique. I’ve never been brave enough to dry brush another color on top. But next time I will. Maybe. 😂
I just started finishing my first product and I am loving it! Thank you for this detailed class. Did you just do 1 coat of the primer and 1 coat of the paint or more?
Because I use Benjamin Moore advance I usually just spot prime with the clear shellac 🖤 see video two for more on that.
Love your work! I finally did this process and loved the finish! I went to put on a protective coat and used a water based poly like you recommended in previous videos and it wiped the finish off! Ugh. What do you recommend? Should I have used an oil based instead? I'm so bummed but know I can recreate it again. Any help would be amazing, thanks
Hey! Your glaze wasn’t dry is why it wiped off 😭 it take a long time to dry for some climates and depending on how thick you applied it. I will be going over that in more detail in part 2 coming out soon.

Question: I just did this finish on a kitchen table, I love it! However, I did it in 3 sections. Two sections turned out lighter and third one is slightly darker. I have not put on the polyurethane coat yet. Can i re-apply another coat of glaze on the two lighter finishes to try and match them to the darker one? Its not that bad but it would look better.
I’m doing this on a piece that I’m removing from my bedroom to the living room.

I'm soaking up your content (pun totally intentional LOL). I want to redo an old maple table in the Pottery Barn finish, and I have 2 end tables that I will be practicing with (one has already been subjected to humiliation with my first attempt at painting, the other is about to experience the same).
I've been looking for the ice-scaping brush you mentioned but don't see it on Amazon in Canada. Would a wok cleaning whisk or an air conditioning condenser fin comb be good alternatives (or should I just use the whisk brush that you used to use)? The wok cleaning whisk reminds me of a chalk and wax brush, but it's made from bamboo. The metal air- conditioning fin comb comes in both metal and plastic and more closely resembles your new tool. Which do you think is better for the job?

I think your work is just wonderful! I'm looking forward to the entire 4 part series. I have just 1 question though. With this particular piece, in the video, I noticed you didn't prime or sand. It turned out OK, in the long run, for durability? Keep the videos coming.....😊
So glad you’re here for the series 🩷 I mention in the video (quickly 😂) that i cleaned and sanded and clear shellac over raw wood or any bondo repairs done but I didn’t show it on camera. BM advance adhears really well though so if your piece is clean and doesn’t have any damage then lightly sanding after you clean and you’re good to go!

Looks great. How long do you want between doing the base coat with BM Advance before doing the glaze? Might want to set up a Amazon store and link your tools. Another income stream!
