Shannon --- I refinished my entire kitchen using your videos. I refinished my 50+ kitchen cabinets using your techniques to make it look like wood (without sanding)! Thank you so much and wishing you all the best. God bless you.
Wow. That's great! What a big project!
Would love to see photos! I want to do this on my kitchen island
I cannot find Varathane Gel stain in Briarsmoke in the area I live in northern Ontario Canada. Does anyone have suggestions on which two colors I can mix to make my own glaze to do this finish?
I redid a table for my daughter and it turned out amazing with your technique. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The same as you did with primer, tan, then briarsmoke, then french silver. I even found the dollar tree doll broom! Your video's are amazing, I just love you!!!
I'm in New Zealand and I used your technique on a formica dresser. Omg, it was so fast & so easy. I dont have access to your paint suggestions so I just winged it! I primed because of the slick surface then applied a biscuity basecoat colour. Once dry I grabbed my equivalents of your brushes and applied Rust-Oleum Chalked Aged Glaze. It was ridiculously easy. Hubby just assumed it was real wood and didnt even question it! As you warned, my glaze took days to dry! 🤣 I'm not keen on my final colour - because of my colour choices, it's very caramel but having seen this video, I cant wait to go back in with the extra coat! I just want anyone watching who is keen to try this, even if you're in other parts of the world & dont have the exact paint colours, to just do it! Shannon's technique is insanely easy and looks ridiculously fabulous. Thank you for sharing Shannon. Really really appreciate your videos :).
Thank you so much for this great tutorial. I refinished my first dresser, and it came out beautifully with your simple techniques.
Excellent tutorial! Much more elevated look than what I’ve seen! 😊
Beautiful! Love those colors blended together! I look forward to your vids! Thnx!
Wow!!!! Thank you SO much for this stellar tutorial, it’s absolutely the very best to get this greige wood effect. So generous of you🙏🙌💝
OHHHHH I'm so happy I found you! I've been refinishing some older pottery barn furniture and these videos are the best! I have a media center, coffee table and desk and I'll using your tutorials! so excited!! thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing! You are the MASTER of this technique! I used water based gel stain and achieved a wonderful result!
This is so cool, thanks for sharing!❤
Shannon!
I’ve very recently started refinishing furniture and was lucky enough to stumble upon your videos! Oh my gosh! The tips you have shared on this channel has saved me so much trial and error I cannot thank you enough! I would love to get your email address to show you my latest dressers! I’m sure you would love them, they follow your style. Thanks for these videos! We love you
awesome tutorial. thank you!!! i love the color so much. my next project will be using your techniques painting my TV entertainments.
I just started watching you and I really enjoy channel. I took a screen shot of the items and product i need to do the potterybarn finish and i am going to try and find them to give it a try ! Thank you!!
I have the water based dupe and it’s Varathane Aged Barrel. I Own them both and they are literally identical🤍I was kinda annoyed with myself for buying the same color stain but at least I know I really like the color 😆
Minwax is the one you have?
which one do you find easier to use? oil or water based
VARATHANE or MINWAX? Cuz I know that “aged barrel” is a name of the second. And it’s pretty cheaper so if you’re saying is the same tone I’ll run and get it!
@@sandrinamx varathane😊 Let me know how it goes!
Hi Shannon, I will try this tomorrow using same supplies. Do you put another coat of the poly after you put the additional wash to make it lighter gray? Love the channel
I love your videos. I'd like to change the kitchen cabinet to farmhouse or pottery barn, so can you recommend a stain color? I've tried many stain, but it's hard to find the same color as your video.
quick question! How do you keep it from being dark around the framing parts where the paint pools up? I saw it looked darker there but then the next shot it was evened out. Also, do you wait for the base coat to dry before you put the gel stain on? thanks!
This is exactly what I need to do with the console table that I bought online. Do you have to wait for the Harvest Brown paint to dry first before applying the gel stain? Thank you!
Amazing!! how would I do a dinning table? wider brush or work in sections?
This is BEAUTIFUL! will definitely try this technique. I’ve heard really good things about the new Lilly Moon water based gel stains if you’d wanna check those out!😊
You are so talented and a great teacher! I just subscribed and liked. I heard that commenting on videos helps you too, so here goes. I love this gray color and the steps seem easy enough but wanted to also try something darker. One of your other videos (about 6 months ago) showed a darker color but the steps and supplies were different. Do you have suggestions for a darker color using the brands/supplies indicated in this video? Also, do you prefer using the liquid sandpaper now instead of the light sanding as demonstrated before? Thanks!
Do you clear coat again after the white wash step?
I love your technique and would like to redo my entire dining room using it. However, how does the finish (the harvest brown) work out on chairs, especially the legs and slats? Have you done chairs too?
You have the harvest brown listed in a semi gloss finish, does that work better than an eggshell or satin? Thank you I’m very excited to try this finish.

Love your content! You are quite gifted and are my fav faux wood youtuber... Q, I've only seen one flip regarding doing a faux walnut and you used several colors. Is that still the technique you'd use for faux walnut? I see you have updated techniques for lighter faux wood grains and wanted to ask for your best recommendation for a faux walnut finish on a dining table top.
So if I wanted to paint this finish over an ikea piece (you know the laminated pieces like the kallax), would the 123 be sufficient or should it be the zinzer shellac primer instead? And any idea if that changes how paint adheres? Thank you for your tutorials!! I’m planning on doing my bedroom set (eventually lol)
@blacksheephouse LOVE YOUR WORK- can't stop watching all your techniques. I'm planning to try the gray wood Pottery barn dupe and I like the lighter version that you achieve with the "white wash/dry brush" - I'm wondering if anyone has tried it with a white wax instead of the white wash and if it would have a similar effect. I'm hoping to try that b/c I think it might be "easier" but do want the look that Shannon has achieved here. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or responses to this comment.
Looks fantastic! Although it's not my taste lol I can appreciate the style. I also want to thank you for your roller tips in your previous videos. I am in Canada. I purchased some small foam dense rollers from our dollar store. Normally I'd go to Homedepot. They looked pretty good so I gave them a shot; figured it would suck. Well they are fabulous 👌 I just kept rolling like you said and it turned out flawless..so Thanks!
Hey! That’s awesome to hear. And my husband family is from Canada! 🇨🇦 ❤️
@@blacksheephouse awesome 🇨🇦 I'm in Ontario, near Toronto!
Did U sand in between any of these coats?
This is beautiful, & your tutorial is much appreciated!
I love this look! I let my furniture dry for over two weeks between stain and clear coat. Everything was dry, I added the poly and there’s two spots that look like the grey stain just flaked off. Any idea what could have happened? Want to try to avoid my mistake when I redo it.
love this- could you stay with the gel finish or is it better to do a matte finish polyurethane?
Could you use gel stain for wood like min wax ?
I like this allot! I have ugly, Orangy Maple Cabinets from 20+ years, I HATE them! This would be a perfect finish!
You have given me the confidence and inspiration to tackle my bedroom furniture…thank you! How could I do a little warmer gray version of this?
You could mix in some aged oak gel stain from Minwax, you’ll have to go to Lowe’s for the Minwax and Home Depot for the Briarsmoke wich is a pain but that’s my go to mix when I want warmer grey, you could order online to save driving all over
Thank you for sharing your techniques. I am working on my bedroom furniture and used Beyond Paint Soft gray (I am new and not great at sanding yet), then the gel stain. Tested on a couple of small back nightstands and they are beautiful. However, working on my nightstands and the Beyond Paint dried a little more smooth on 1 night stand and rougher on the other...maybe due to heat, not sure. Just wondering if you knew if it will make the stain look different on each? Love your videos and as a beginner, love how easy this finish is.
Hey! It will make it look a bit different but it probably won’t be that noticeable being on separate pieces of furniture. You could sand with a super high grit like 600 and then do a quick recoat on the rough one if you wanted to be extra sure.
Do you have to let the paint dry before putting the gel on ?
Can I get the product list links ? Thanks for posting I am needing to do a at home project for a dresser
You are so sweet to share all this information. Loving your content. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤️❤️. Can I ask, do you sand in between your coats of poly?
Only if there is visible debris or texture and I use a really high grit sanding sponge for that
Hi Shannon, would this finish be durable enough for kitchen cabinets? Thanks.
I have a crazy question Shannon! Can I use this technique on a mirrored dresser?
Great video! how can I get a darker color? like espresso... Thank you for sharing your videos!
Do you let the tan paint color dry before adding gel stain?
Is there a waterbase gray glaze? It’s just so difficult to clean up
I used this finish on a table but now I got some peeling…any advice to get it fixed?
So..I followed your instructions and my coffee table turned out beautiful BUT.. I did run into an issue, one side of the table didn't look as good and matched up, so a wiped off the glaze and tried again.. still doesn't look right, so I repainted that side, then glazed.. can't get it to match up. Any suggestions? I don't want to start all over bc it looks really good except on this one side - currently I'm letting one layer of glaze dry and then trying another layer tomorrow, I'm thinking maybe I'm rushing it.. idk
I’d love for you to do a restoration hardware at James dupe !
What finish are you using with the “Harvest Brown” paint?
Hi I love this tutorial! If I want to white wash should I seal it again with polyurethane after it dries?
You should be fine if it’s fully dry
I’m looking to try this on a crib. Any suggestions would help!
Love these faux finishes soooo much!🙌🏼
Also I have a question do you think a wax paint would work?
I have some Waverly wax paint and wax clear coat at home and wondering how to do a wood finish with that.
If you’re talking about chalk paint, yes it works, I flip furniture also, and have learned so much from Shannon but I also experiment my own stuff, so a while back I used the colors Mineral or Plaster as a base, (beautiful results) sand lightly once your paint is dry then proceed per Shannon’s tutorial 😅 hope it helps
Love this finish! Do you think it would be an appropriate application for a dining room table?
Yes 🙌 bc of the gel stain it is super durable, I’ve even used it on outdoor furniture
Thoughts on this combination:
Behr Rugged Tan
Java Brown Glaze
Gel Stain “Briarsmoke”
Then depending on how that looks possibly dry brushing some white on top. Please help. I just did the Java brown over the rugged tan and it looks nice but my husband things it’s a little too dark/brown for our vanity in our bathroom which is what I’m redoing. Would love any suggestions/tips/advice! Thank you🥰🥰🥰
What is the lowes color match for the paint used?
can this technique be done on laminate floors?
Thank you for your videos. I've watched them all. Do you do the white after the topcoat (poly) or before?
I was wondering the same thing?
@@sdewitt5088 I guess before...poly is always the last step
Shannon do you apply the whitewash after the polyurethane or before ?
Thanks
before is my guess
If we don’t have the Behr paint sample available to us what would be equivalent
Hey Shannon! I just bought two ikea Songesand dressers and was wondering if I could do this or do I have to sand everything down? Really hoping I can because this looks beautiful 😩🙆🏾♀️
Hey! You can definitely use this on most any surface, just be sure to prime and I would do a 5 minute scuff sand all over with 220 grit sanding sponge if you want extra adhesion
@@blacksheephouse thank you so much 🤍🤍 will definitely do that!
Was the harvest brown a glidden or behr colour?
I’m wondering what you do for the sides of drawers, and the sides and tops of doors on buffets. Paint or not?
I do the same, I show it in the video
Okay. One more question. In the video the gel stain looks or appears to be dark grey. But when I look it up, All the pictures indicate it's brown? Um. Help. Thanks.
💖💖💖💖
Hi Shannon, can I use Minwax oil stain instead of the gel stain? I am trying not to purchase another can.
Hi! It needs to be a gel stain for the thickness or a glaze if you’re going the water based route
Very interesting ! Could you do a video about chipped paint, how to obtain that effect. Thanks !!👍🐕🦺😎
Hi. I really want to do this but I am confused by how any of this will last? Oil and water based materials do not adhere to one another. This is what I have been told all my life. What Am I missing? Your technique is wonderful and I wish you nothing but success. :)
Shannon, I am trying to change my dining table in a particular way, I wonder if I could send you a picture of what I am trying to create? I would be forever grateful.
I’ve done this exact combo and the rugged tan cabinet paint and brown gel stain. Always feel it comes out too grayish. What would be a good gel stain to put back more beige? The white gel stain seems too white? Is there a beige gel stain or mixture of products I already have? Thank you
I’ve done a few other looks here in these videos - ua-cam.com/video/Qr9Ony0nhP4/v-deo.html

@@blacksheephouse thanks so much!! I love this look! You’re always so helpful and I appreciate it. Blessings :)
How do you dispose of mineral spirits after cleaning your brushes?
I put the shop towels I use and the dirty mineral spirits into an old metal paint can and fill with dollar store kitty litter then I have to take to the local hazardous waste bc it’s considered hazardous waste. It’s a pain but the finish is super durable.
So you used a water based top coat on top of the oil based gel stain?? I’m so confused.
Ya, I’ve been doing it for years now and no problems at all as long as it’s fully dry
Shannon you are so cool about your work. Still waiting for you go back to the black hair.
Hi
Beautiful finish !.
Briarsmoke stain is brown family.
How do you get the gray looks?
It is a warm gray for sure but def gray for me
@@blacksheephouse thanks appreciate your reply.
@@blacksheephouseI’m going to need to see this on lumber vs a cabinet door. I feel like my lumber is absorbing the gel stain too fast that it’s not coming out like this and I followed your directions to the T. Maybe I didn’t sand my 2x4’s or plywood that well??
What Lowes paint would match the Harvest Brown ? I have to by a gallon in my walmart … thank you 😊
Sorry I forgot to add that! Outerbanks is the name you need 🖤
Question: With the long dry time, how do you keep dust in the air from settling on the horizontal surfaces? Do you use one of those painting "tents"? Love your videos. Tks.
The dust and dog hair always are coming for me and my finishes 😭 it helps to work with the drawers in ga flat so less can calm onto them. These finishes are very forgiving so when something is visible in there I can usually just pick it out and touch up a tad
This has nothing to do with your video I just have a question I thought I saw where are you mixed paint with some topcoat. I have black Valspar cabinet in furniture but it’s in flat can I put a little bit of topcoat satin in it so it’s not so flat?
You sure can, or semi gloss would give even more sheen. But as far as I knew, that paint only comes in satin so I’m surprised to hear you got in flat 🖤
I actually got a Valspar cabinet furniture in flat and wasn’t paying attention and had them do caviar but actually I painted some on the furniture and it’s much more gray than black
@@cherylmcguire7960 it’s a hassle but you can take it back in and ask for it darker more like SW tricorn black, you can check online to see other pictures of the caviar to see what it looks like and if you like it, it’s a Sherwin williams color so there’s a lot of pictures of it in different light online
@@blacksheephouse thank you so much for your replies and I am definitely going to go over there now thank you again ❤️
Where are you located
North of Atlanta in the suburbs
so first is primer, then paint?
Wait, you mix water base finish with oil things?
what are we talking about?
Can you give the order of things.
