Thank you so much for this video!! It helped me a lot. I had tried the other Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 (40AN0135US) docking station and I had several issues, it was not charging my Thinkpad X380 (even after I made the drivers update), the audio was not working (but it was fixed after the update), and I had to use a DisplayPort/Thunderbolt adapter for the MacBookPro to extend to 3 screens (laptop+2 external screens). With the Lenovo Hybrid USB-C(40AF0135US) with DisplayLink technology, it’s been a breeze: both the Thinkpad and the MacBook Pro are powered by the dock, they both extend to 3 screens without the need of additional adapter (DisplayLink is installed on the MBP), the audio works great. This one is a keeper!

The question is if I got the 135w charger will it charger my MacBook or I have to connect a charger along with docking station
Since you have a 90W charger for the macbook I am guessing you have a 14 inch M1 Max or 15-16 Inch Macbook Pro, this hybrid dock is only able to charge up to 65W and so it will put a slow charge on your macbook pro. If you aren't putting much workload or intense work then it should be able to have very slow battery drain or no battery drain at all and it might even charge the MBP while idling. If you find your workflow is draining the battery then you will just need to plug in the 90W power adapter too. Hi @BsianDad, would this specific dock be compatible with connecting a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 3rd Gen laptop to a monitor such as the Samsung G9 Odyssey? Otherwise, which X1 Gen model is this dock compatible with? Also, I have read some reviews that this dock has trouble connecting to Samsung monitors in general - just wondering if this is indeed true?

Thanks for this, realized I don't have the hybrid, just the Gen 2, which I added a DisplayLink USB adapter so my M1 can have more screens. However had you had any ethernet issues? It seems it drops while connected. I need to make service inactive, unplug and it starts up again.

Hi there! I'm looking at this product so that I can easily swap between my personal windows-desktop computer, and my work macbook-pro, with the same monitors and peripherals working from home. Seeing your test with the MacBook-pro is great! How could I investigate whether it will also work with my desktop (the CPU does not seem to support USB-C)
Hi Kyle, that is fine the dock does run USB-A so you can connect that to the dock, just make sure you install the displaylink drivers for this dock to work on both the desktop windows computer and the macbook pro.
Didn’t work for me with the same configuration on a new MacBook Pro M2. Lenovo help onlin isn’t the best. I am still struggling. I may have to buy a MAC specific hub
Hi! Thank you for the video! I recently got one, everything works except the charging. Tried TB3 and 3.2 Gen 2 cable with an M1 Air and XPS 13. Weirdly, it charges a Galaxy S21 besides all functionality, the phone recognizes everything and charging as well. Got a 90W PSU with it (45N0500). Can it be that this PSU is not the original and it doesn't work properly? What is the model number of the original 90W PSU? I was able to find the 135W one but not the 90W. Thanks in advance! :D
Thanks for confirming that it works with Galaxy S21. I've been looking for something that can charge and perform the docking functionality for an android device!
did you end up finding a fix for this? i'm in thesame position and find it isnt charging for me either.. i've even tried different more high amp power supply units..
@@on2a The power supply was the problem for me. With the 90W one, it does not charge my Mac. (Side note, the Galaxy S21 did indicate that it's charging, however, it did not. The % dropped only, it would probably charge with the bigger PSU) I got the 135W PSU and it works perfectly. If you tried it with the bigger one and still not working, maybe check the Type-C cable. It should be rated 3.2 Gen 2 and proper power delivery. Hope it helps :D
Hi there, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad work computer so of course this will run perfect on my dual monitors at home. However would like to also be able to use my personal computer on the dock. My personal laptop is 4k 15 " HP Spectre and it has two Thunderbolt ports. Will this work as well? and will it run the dual monitors in 4k? (Both monitors are 4k native). Any help or direction is appreciated.
I echo the comments, this review was really helpful and will use one of the links to purchase it in the UK! One question, have you found that the screens flicker every so often, or not at all? I’m Using a dock at the moment, but they turn off every 30 mins or so, only for a few seconds, but it’s HIGHLY Annoying.
Hi Kwesi Afful, thank you for the nice feedback and helping me out with the support on purchasing via the link. I haven't found the screens flicker every so often, if you do one first thing I would try is different video cable, that is usually the first sign of bad cable or bad connection since its digital cable its losing packet of data (in this case display information) and so it will black out and in. If it was VGA it will go quirky colours instead being analog cable. I hope that helps.
Have you installed the Displaylink drivers for the computer? I made a recent guide for the macos installation that might be able to help you out @David Hutcheson you can view it here: ua-cam.com/video/5nIXyH7d9A0/v-deo.html
Thanks Chris lol, I do own a number of box/Stanley knives too but the Gerber is my favorite and I do use it for fishing plus it absolute cut through cardboard boxes so much quicker when I flat pack or cut them up to smaller pieces for recycling.
@G CSU thank you very much for your encouraging words. I do like my Gerber and have chosen it to be my unboxing knife of choice I also guess this also ties to my outro if people hang around to the end of my videos, imperfections what makes it beautiful and interesting =).
If you use this for the P15 you will still need to plug in the supplied 230W power adapter that comes with your P15. This dock isn't able to supply enough power but it can do the ports and dual monitors. I would advise the thunderbolt 3/4 docks would be better than this universal dock. You will get better performance and higher resolutions on the display outputs from the thunderbolt docks compare to this dock.
You can but it won't pass through the 300W to the laptop via the dock because that USB-C is limited to 90W. So a powerful laptop needs to be still connected by the power brick directly to the laptop. Hope that makes sense.
If you driving two monitors go with this, if you driving three monitors go with the D6000. The reason why I go with this Lenovo over the Dell is that the thinkpad hybrid has a power button that could mirror your power button on the laptop so you can start or wake up the laptop when the lid is closed.
Is there a device just like this but with the ability to have to computers plugged in simultaneously and you can switch between them? I want to have my work laptop and my mac mini both plugged in permanently while I work from home. Thanks!
Hi Will the Dell 6000 also not work if we don't install the display link drivers? I have a company laptop and may not be allowed to install anything externally.
I have a laptop asus with a gtx 3070, it doesnt have usb type C thunderbolt port, i can use the usb type A adapter that comes with the cable of the docking, sorry for my stupid question but, does the docking still is going to support the power for the grafic card? Cheers!
The using the USB-A will not charge your laptop at all, so you will need to still connect your supplied AC power adapter to your laptop. If you had a USB-C port, more than likely your laptop will require at least 100W and this dock is only able to provide up to 65W so you will still need to connect your supplied AC power adapter anyway. You can still run the dual or triple monitor setup, USB ports, network and audio through the dock just not the power thats all.
Hi Jose, I have tried this on Big Sur and DisplayLink has updated their drivers from their officially website to support Big Sur and multiple monitors in extended mode =) so I am please to say it does work.
Does anybody has experienced any issues?, my macbook pro 2017 isn't charging, I have tested two usb-c cables, the one from the original docking and the apple cable that comes with my power supply
To charge a laptop it has to be via the USB-C port, most laptops won't change via the USB-A port as it wasn't designed to deliver high enough Wattage that would charge up laptops.
Hi, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 connected to my 2017 MacBook Pro and a Dell U2719D Monitor. I have installed the Display Link Manager but my MacBook is currently not connected with my external monitor. Does it matter whether I plug into a HDMI port or DP port from the monitor to the dock?
It doesn't matter which port you plugged into the dock, two things to check that in system preferences then security that DisplayLink is authorised. Secondly also make sure displaylink manager is running you should be able to find it in the applications folder in finder to start it up. It lives as an icon near where it displays the time on top right in the menu bar.
This one uses the displaylink drivers for more universal support and great with Macs too, the USB-C Dock Gen 2 would have faster interface /data transfer speeds but not so good with Macs.

Hi, can you daisy chain monitors with this dock in order to use 3 or more external monitors?
Do you already know the answer? I just ordered this docking station with 2 daisy chain monitors so I hope it works
i got this for using with my HP Laptop which has 150w charging brick, so the 135w is not enough. Question, can i keep both plugged in ? computers charger in the computer and docks charger in the dock ?
@BsianDad Can you please let me know How to connect Thinkpad Gen2 Dock Station with Mac Pro 2015 model , it has Thunderbolt 2 port
Thank you for the video, do you know what refresh rate the dock can push out with 2 1080p monitors? My monitors are 144hz capable and I can't go back to 60! lol
does your MacBook Pro the M1 or Intel? Thank you.
Thanks for this, realized I don't have the hybrid, just the Gen 2, which I added a DisplayLink USB adapter so my M1 can have more screens. However had you had any ethernet issues? It seems it drops while connected. I need to make service inactive, unplug and it starts up again.
Hi dear, my Lenovo laptop comes with 230 W power supply, may I use it on this docking station? or there is any risk? Thanks a lot for your help
Great video! Have you tried this dock with Ubuntu?
I just got this today but power button does not seem to put my laptop to sleep. I installed drivers and latest firmware and made sure of course that in power options the button is set to sleep. My laptop is HP 430 G3. Any ideas?
Would this work with a thinkpad T420?
Dos this work with the iPad pro?
With mine 40AF dock A1990 MabCook Pro is using USB and charging but HDMI or DP is not operating. What can be wrong or not set yet?
On small USB-C Travel Hub, HDMI works but only 4k/30Hz, but 40AF video ports do not work at all
Hi, where can I find the information saying those ports are 3.2 gen2? Thanks
Hi, do you recall if all the other ports on this dock worked properly?
@@BsianTech Awesome! Thanks for your reply and for this great review
Kyle Snow Schwartz does it work for you ? How did you combine mac, personal pc and the docking station ?
Didn’t work for me with the same configuration on a new MacBook Pro M2. Lenovo help onlin isn’t the best. I am still struggling. I may have to buy a MAC specific hub
Do you have the Displaylink drivers installed and also making sure the DisplayLink manager app is open in the background?
Hi! I have redmibook 16. I want plug in Hybrid USB-C.
Than I want to plug in 2 monitors (4k with 60 herz ) in Hybrid USB-C?
Is it possible to do?
Hi there, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad work computer so of course this will run perfect on my dual monitors at home. However would like to also be able to use my personal computer on the dock. My personal laptop is 4k 15 " HP Spectre and it has two Thunderbolt ports. Will this work as well? and will it run the dual monitors in 4k? (Both monitors are 4k native). Any help or direction is appreciated.
I echo the comments, this review was really helpful and will use one of the links to purchase it in the UK!
One question, have you found that the screens flicker every so often, or not at all? I’m
Using a dock at the moment, but they turn off every 30 mins or so, only for a few seconds, but it’s HIGHLY Annoying.
Does it support 144hz for 1440p? Thanks!
Big spurrrrrr
Can this dock do 144hz at 2K for a macbook?
Thanks
Thanks so much for the video. I could not get the monitors to work.
Have you installed the Displaylink drivers for the computer? I made a recent guide for the macos installation that might be able to help you out @David Hutcheson you can view it here: ua-cam.com/video/5nIXyH7d9A0/v-deo.html
So if i don't have a usb c port on my notebook it won't work right?
For such a soft and well spoken person as you the knife always is a bit of a shocker. Cant you find a more modest variant?
Thanks Chris lol, I do own a number of box/Stanley knives too but the Gerber is my favorite and I do use it for fishing plus it absolute cut through cardboard boxes so much quicker when I flat pack or cut them up to smaller pieces for recycling.
@G CSU thank you very much for your encouraging words. I do like my Gerber and have chosen it to be my unboxing knife of choice I also guess this also ties to my outro if people hang around to the end of my videos, imperfections what makes it beautiful and interesting =).
Is your Strongarm genuine or an Aliexpress special mate?
Hi,
Can i use it for P15 gen 1 workstation
? Or do i need 230w adapter for it?
If you use this for the P15 you will still need to plug in the supplied 230W power adapter that comes with your P15. This dock isn't able to supply enough power but it can do the ports and dual monitors. I would advise the thunderbolt 3/4 docks would be better than this universal dock. You will get better performance and higher resolutions on the display outputs from the thunderbolt docks compare to this dock.
hi, I plug it in, its not charging, is my MacBook supposed to start charging?
Can you plug a 300w power brick into this to power a Lenovo Legion 5 while gaming?
You can but it won't pass through the 300W to the laptop via the dock because that USB-C is limited to 90W. So a powerful laptop needs to be still connected by the power brick directly to the laptop. Hope that makes sense.
Will it work with thinkpad t460 ?
Hi Kojo Olivet, this dock will work with the ThinkPad T460 =).
Friend which one would you suggest between this and dells d6000
If you driving two monitors go with this, if you driving three monitors go with the D6000. The reason why I go with this Lenovo over the Dell is that the thinkpad hybrid has a power button that could mirror your power button on the laptop so you can start or wake up the laptop when the lid is closed.
Is there a device just like this but with the ability to have to computers plugged in simultaneously and you can switch between them? I want to have my work laptop and my mac mini both plugged in permanently while I work from home. Thanks!
there are monitors that support this feature
Anyone having 5he same.issue where the screens don't extend but only.mirror ??
Hi
Will the Dell 6000 also not work if we don't install the display link drivers? I have a company laptop and may not be allowed to install anything externally.
Fortunately it won't work properly, I have had cases where the single display will come up but most time no display until the drivers installed.
@@BsianTech Do the laptops generally come with a display lonk driver installed or it is generally not present?
Will this drive dual monitors with a M1 macbook ?
@Nathan Lane, this dock will drive dual monitors in extended desktop mode with the M1 MBP.
Have you tried this with Big Sur? I have heard there were issues in getting multiple monitors to work in extended mode with Big Sur.
Hi Jose, I have tried this on Big Sur and DisplayLink has updated their drivers from their officially website to support Big Sur and multiple monitors in extended mode =) so I am please to say it does work.
@@BsianTech Thanks for the reply
Does anybody has experienced any issues?, my macbook pro 2017 isn't charging, I have tested two usb-c cables, the one from the original docking and the apple cable that comes with my power supply
I am having the same issues. Everything works except charging. Any ideas @BsianDad ?
does it support 144hz with display port
Does it work with any PC with usb 3.1?
What if my PC doesnt charge via the USB port? Is it auto detect and wont try to send power over the port?
@@BsianTech Thank you!
Is there any reason to get this over the (Lenovo USA Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 (40AS0090US)
) ? They are similar price.
This one uses the displaylink drivers for more universal support and great with Macs too, the USB-C Dock Gen 2 would have faster interface /data transfer speeds but not so good with Macs.
@@BsianTech I'm thinking that the Gen2 is also displaylink right?
@@silicondt1 the Gen2 is a thunderbolt dock so it isn't a displaylink driver dock.
@@BsianTech I have already bought lenovo gen2 with thunderbolt 3 on board(40AN0135EU)...do you I should give it back, if I'm going use it with macbook pro?
Will this work with 14" Macbook M1 pro?
This will work still with the M1 Pro MBP14. Just make sure you get the latest DisplayLink installed.
This is work on t430?
Should work on the T430 via the USB-A connection and just remember to install the Displaylink driver/app to make the dock work
Hey I am using lenovo docking station, but unable to get dual display.
I am using Dell and HP monitors
Make sure you have the displaylink drivers installed on the computer for this dock to work.
@@BsianTech it's already there.. still I am unable to get extended display for my 2 monitors.
@@asabbineni Next I be checking each video cable, do swaping checking it works in single monitor mode first, if cables both check out okay, also forgot are you using a Mac? If so make sure the displaylink manager is open and authorised in system perferences >security.
@@BsianTech its already downloaded and installation also successfully completed. But at top of screen, I am seeing message as no monitors detected.
Does the docking station require thunderbolt???
This dock doesn't require the laptop to have thunderbolt =).
@@BsianTech perfect thanks so much!
My usb ports on the doc are not working. I plug in devices and nothing happens. They don’t even light up.
I know this sounds silly but make sure the power is connected to the dock, or if the laptop is charging from the dock as sounds like the dock hasn't received power.
@@BsianTech power is connected. My monitors are working fine. Actually what helped was disconnecting all cables and reconnecting lol. This was recommended on their FAQ and troubleshooting page.
Can we connect eGpu
You could but wouldn't do very well as this isn't thunderbolt speed so it won't be fast enough to gain much advantage for eGPU connected to it.
Would it work with an M1 macbook?
This will work with the M1 Macbook, just remember to install the DIsplayLink drivers and also open up the Displaylink manager app to get all the displays working.
@@BsianTech Thanks :)
@@BsianTechCan you recommend any other cheaper docking station alternatives for dual monitors for the M1 chip?
