Hi there. Yes, because the Ethernet data is sharing he USB-C connection with power, video and other USB devices, you may see some reduction in speed. I haven’t noticed much difference however my internet connection in quite slow so it trends to be the bottleneck for speed.

No worries my friend, you helped me out and that's what matters. It was only a comment not a complaint. Thank you for taking the time to put this out there.
The docking station supplies the power as well as all the other connections, so you just need the docking station plugged in to power, and the single USB-C cable form the dock to your laptop. Thanks for watching and for your question.
Great video, Devi helped infinitely more that the Lenovo instructions. One question I have though is can you change the settings to use the monitor camera instead of the laptop? I do loads of video calls and I’m always looking at the screen but my laptop camera is at an awkward angle.
Hi Pete, Came across this video of yours which is definitely helpful. Question: I got two USB-C ports on my laptop. One of them is the main charging one. Do I need to connect the charging cable at all if I have connected the dock to the laptop? Also, if I do not need to connect the charging cable, do I connect the docking cable to the main charging USB-C port?
Thank you for the video! This helps so much! I currently have my thinkpad connected to two monitors through the DisplayPort connections, but i have a 3rd USB-c monitor that I’d like to add to my setup. Is that possible to add to my extended desktop?
Is the power button on this dock itself able to power on the notebook even when is completely off ? Not just when the notebook sleeps/hybernate s (as seen on your video)? The power button mirroring is a deal-breaker for me. Thanks.
Hey there Peter. Yes, the power button on the dock can power on the laptop when completely shut down and off. This was something I wanted too, as often I will have my laptop docked with an external keyboard and mouse and don't want to open the lip just to hit the power button!

Im thinking of buying a USB-C dock to connect all my peripherals (keyboard, mouse, headset and monitor. My laptop only has usb-c (no thunderbolt). Will there be any noticeable latency issues or delays when playing games? The reason why I wanted a docking station is so I can just leave all my peripherals connected to docking station and easily take my laptop with me and a spare mouse when leaving then just replug to docking station when Im back home.
Hey there my friend. So, no latency with keyboard, mouse or other peripherals. The one caveat is the video output. It uses a separate driver which is absolutely fine for most applications.... except gaming. It's a common problem with many docking stations sadly, but can be worked around by connecting the monitor(s) directly to the laptop and then using the dock for everything else.
Dear Pete, I got this exact setup with 2 screens but they seem to sometimes have sprinkling dots all over and sometimes one of the screen blinks (Black then back to normal), its really disturbing and i'm trying very hard to fix it. I have updated all graphic and ports drivers and rebooted multiple time and updated windows. I am running out of options, have you heard of this problem? is there a way to fix it?
Hello there my friend. This is most often due to either a faulty cable or a cable that is. It quite plugged in all the way. I would unplug and plug back in the cables to make sure they are in completely and screwed tight (if they are the type of cables which screw in). This is especially an issue with VGA and DVI cables with multiple pins. Good luck! Hope you get it sorted.
I think 170 quid for the docking station is a bit step is there any compatible ones you would recommend a bit cheaper I use the ThinkPad for work and have one for my home laptop but of course they not compatible.
Yeah; the beauty part is that it is USB-C, so unlike the old days where every laptop has a different connector, you can use any of the cheaper USB-C rocking stations and hubs. I would avoid the super cheap ones but there are plenty from the likes of Targus and Kensington that will do the job.

Hi Pete! Have you tried using the docking station without the slim tip charger? For some reason i am not allowed to charge my HP laptop through the Lenovo dock.
My laptop doesn’t have usb C port. I tried using a generic usb c to usb A cable instead but it doesnt seem to work. Is there any way i can connect the dock station to my laptop without a usb c port on the laptop?
The documentation with the docking station is seriously poor. I was not completely sure how to use the USB cable that came in as it had a USB 2 adapter attached to it and the documentation made it sound as if using that connection would give video where as using USB-C would give power. Your video hit the mark showing USB-C does everything. Typing this on my laptop using the docking station with dual monitors. Not alot of fluff in your video, straight to the point, thanks man.
Awesome! So glad I could help. Yes, you don’t always get awesome documentation with this stuff so I wanted to share my experience in the hope that hat it would help others. 👍

Great video! Thank you so much Pete! I just have 1 silly question.. can we use this docking station (connected to the laptop), WITHOUT plug it in to the charger? As sometimes, I might gonna need it only to read my USB A flashdisk (my laptop only has 2 USB C ports as external data connector).. It would be quite a longer process if I had to plug the charger first to get it done..
This is neither a docking station, nor is your laptop an actual ThinkPad. This is a glorified port replicator and you are using a consumer grade laptop with a ThinkPad sticker on it, which is a joke Lenovo has been playing at the expense of unwitting mainstream customers. A docking station is something are mounting a laptop into, and actual ThinkPads begin with letters T, X, W and P.

Hi Pete! I’ve got two Samsung monitors and the Lenovo thinkpad dock and just recently bought the Lenovo ideapad Flex 5. I tried the steps you advised in the video but for some reason the monitors just aren’t being recognised! The dock is talking to the laptop somewhat because it’s picking up the mouse and keyboard…any idea why monitors are not recognised?
Not sure sorry? Perhaps they are 4K monitors and not supported together? Have you tried one at a time? And have you confirmed the compatibility of the laptop with this dock?

Really good question? No idea sorry. I don’t use an Android phone. USB-C is pretty universal so you might be good?! But there are much cheaper USB-C docks.
Hi. Pete. I ha e the dock and tried to connect two monitors. I was able to do it after watching your video, but when I try to use a video or listen to my students during a video conference, I am not able to have any sound . I have tried everything. Do I need another kind of cables? Thank you!!
Hey there. Sound should still work fine? You might need to change your audio settings from the HdMI output back to the internal speaker. Or plug in some headphones or speakers.
Hi Pete, love your videos! When connecting or disconnecting the computer to the dock, do you then have to turn off the computer before connecting/disconnecting the usb-c cable or just pull/push it out/in?
Hey there my friend. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, you can just plug straight in while the computer is running and it will adjust the settings and connect the dock and your monitors straight away. It’s very convenient because if I’m out somewhere working I can get home, plug in, and immediately continue with what I was working on. 👍
Any tricks you can share about getting the laptop to connect to the internet via the ethernet port? Mine's not working and you didn't discuss a hardwired connection in the video. I'm connecting to my Thinkpad laptop using the USB-C cable provided. I have an ethernet cable connecting my docking station and my router extension on my desk. Any help is appreciated.
Hey there Jason. Hmmmm.... I have plugged directly in to my router from the network port and it has worked fine. I take it that it works when you plug directly from the laptop jack? Would love to help but haven’t come across anything like this sorry.
I know nothing about computers and my company sent a load of equipment to my home. THANK YOU for your clearly explained demonstration, I am all set up now and ready to go! THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
I have a T480s that I would primarily use this for, but would I technically on occasion be able to plug in a desktop as the input USB C source instead?
Great video. Just one question: I noticed there is no speakers connector at the dock (other thasn the headphone jack). In case you want to connect your external speakers to the dock, how would you do that?
Hey there. You’ll just need to use the headphone output and connect this to your speakers using the relevant cable. Here’s my cable guide - studiolivetoday.com/cables
Hi Pete, Thanks for the great video. Question: I'm using the lenovo docking station with a lenovo laptop and two monitors. It works awesome! Now I would like to put an old pc into this setup. Unfortunately it does nog detect the lenovo docking station via usb or usbc. Any suggestions?
Hey Bobby. That’s very strange? The cables I used were the display port types. Just making sure it has the correct connector at the docking station end?
Hey Pete. Does this docking station work on a non-lanovo laptop (Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro) that has charging and video-out features on its usb-c port ? Thanks.
Hey there my friend. I’m not sure I’m afraid. It probably would as USB-C is (sort of) a standard, but Lenovo don’t provide this information, probably because they want you to buy a Lenovo laptop too. So, you would have to experiment, which could be a pretty costly experiment. Sorry I can’t be more help. Pete.
Hello Pete, Thinking of purchasing a ThinkPad X1 Yoga for work-at-home. I want to work on my bed; my desk is about 9-10 feet away and I have 3 older USB-A external hard drives on a USB hub that I need to connect, a scanner, a printer, an older Toshiba laptop, as well as an HDMI tv for one monitor and a Samsung 30" monitor for the other. The monitors will be on overbed tables with longer HDMI cables, but I want to leave the rest on my desk and just run a cable from the dock to my new laptop to access everything. The cable from the dock to my computer will obviously need to be longer than the standard one included in the box (at least 10', with maybe a little slack room). Will a longer connection cable be stable and work, and what specific kind do I need to look for? Have never used a dock before and have no access to look at these in person; debating on USB-C Dock Gen 2 and Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2. But I don't know enough about these to determine which will work best with my set-up, especially since my hard drives are pre-USB-C or thunderbolt. Since you own the USB-C Dock I was wondering if you could help me determine if it would be sufficient for my situation. In addition to the office spreadsheets and such, I do photo editing in LightRoom and other art tasks in Photoshop, and will need a stable and powerful setup, but on a budget. Working at my desk is miserable and it's way too small. Thanks for any advice you can provide - LBuford
Hey there. So the Gen 2 version of the USB-C Dock is a good option provided your laptop is powered by USB-C. There are plenty of USB-A ports to continue using your older gear and of course you can attach a hub. I’m not a super expert on the topic so can’t give super specific advice I’m afraid.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete! Upon further research, I've pretty much decided I'd be better off going with the Yoga C940 due to the graphics card. Better for my photo work. And it is only compatible with the thunderbolt 3 dock it appears, from options provided on the customization pages. Still so much research to do! Not at all familiar with thunderbolt 3 and how it works with older gear, so will probably have to call Lenovo. Thanks!
Thanks, this was helpful. You touched on this right at the end but just to be sure you can connect a speaker with USB to the docking station right? I'm about to purchase one but want to make sure I can use the docking station for that instead of having to plug it in directly to the laptop (if that makes sense).

Not sure sorry? It works with my Lenovo laptop and my wife’s Lenovo tablet, both which use USB-C for power.
9:07 I guess my question is how did you get the second larger monitor to pick up the feed from the laptop? I’m still struggling with this.
Hard to troubleshoot sorry. You might need to reach out to Lenovo.
could you portrait monitors or the monitors should have the same resolution? does night mode works on there monitors or not?
Not sure sorry. Been a while since I used this.
My laptop doesn’t have usb C port. I tried using a generic usb c to usb A cable instead but it doesnt seem to work. Is there any way i can connect the dock station to my laptop without a usb c port on the laptop?
Hey there. You’ll likely need a USB-A hub instead as this model only supports USB-C laptops.
does ur RJ45 ethernet port on dock work on yours? mine is connec ted but the e580 doesnt register it . any ideas?
Not sure sorry? Mine sets worked fine.
Is a DVI cable required? Can I hook up a HDMI cord from my monitor to the dock to work?
You would need an adapter or display port to HDMI cable.
Can I plug in a webcam to this docking station? If so, do you have one that you recommend?
Yes and yes! ua-cam.com/video/SuT-K-zGFLU/v-deo.html
Logitech C920/922 is great, or the BRIO of you have a little more budget. studiolivetoday.com/gear
Does the laptop have to be a lenovo laptop? Or should a laptop with a tunderbolt port should do the job?
Technically any other USB-C laptop should work but I would probably go with a more generic one from Belkin or similar.
would that power your laptop with just that single USBC connection? thanks
Yup. It provides power pass-through.
can you hook the dock straigt to a desktop and then use the HDMI and display port to connect to dual monitors??
I wouldn’t think so? 🤔
does it have to be a DVI cable? i have a display port to hdmi but monitor does not detect signal
Yeah I’ve found it a bit picky with cable types.
Not helpful. My dell monitor would not connect to the laptop after plugging it into the docking station
That’s a shame.
Is it possible to disable the charging option since it always is charging?
Only by unplugging. Most modern batteries manage charging and better life for you anyway.
My Lenovo L13 can only support 2 monitors, not 3. If I use this, can I use 2 external monitors and keep the laptop closed?
Hey there. I’ve used this with two 1080p monitors and the lid closed and it works well.
@@PeteJohnsMusic cheers
Great video! Thank you so much Pete! I just have 1 silly question.. can we use this docking station (connected to the laptop), WITHOUT plug it in to the charger?
As sometimes, I might gonna need it only to read my USB A flashdisk (my laptop only has 2 USB C ports as external data connector).. It would be quite a longer process if I had to plug the charger first to get it done..
I believe the dock needs power to function at all so would need to be plugged in.
16:00 its not giving me the option power button and lid nor the other options afterward.
Bummer! Maybe check the latest options and settings for your operating system.
Do you have a video to show how to hook up the monitors? Only one monitor comes on.
Sorry! Worked out of the box for me. Maybe try a different cable or connection?
thank you!! ive been struggling to get mine to connect this fixed it
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
I just got some equipment from work so i could do home office and i had no idea how to set it up, you literally saved me! Thank you so much!!!
Awesome! Very glad to be able to help.
It doesn’t show power button and lid in power options. What do I do?
Oh really? Might be somewhere else on later versions of Windows? Might need to Google or reach out to Lenovo.
Can I hook up 2 laptops and share 2 monitors and a mouse for each?
Nope. Not something supported by any docking stations I know of?
We have the same laptop can i use eGPU for this?
Hey there. Not sure but I would doubt it unfortunately.
Will it work with Lenovo V330-15IKB?
Not sure sorry. If it’s USB-C powered it probably would. But I would check with Lenovo.
Like the voice. Makes you very smart.
Thank you my friend. 👍
@@PeteJohnsMusic sure thing.
Thanks for your feedback.
hi been trying set up the same docking station, cant seem to get my laptop to detect there is second screen is there drivers need to install
Hey there. No, wasn’t any drivers for me on Windows 10? Make sure you have any updates installed though.
You need the Lenovo USB c thunderbolt cable.
Is it compatible with thinkpad t490s?
Not sure sorry? Might need to check the specs or reach out to Lenovo.
is it possible to power up laptop via usb dock power button, with laptop lid closed?
Yup sure is! I do this all the time. 👍😎
@@PeteJohnsMusic mine is not working that way (my laptop is P50 btw). I checked all settings and searched all over internet but couldn't find a way to make it working that way...
guys, I have a Lenovo yoga pro 2 laptop and wanna get two VIOTEK GFV22CB 22-Inch 144Hz 1080P will this work with this docking station, and does anyone know if those two monitors are good?
Hey there. Not sure sorry / hopefully someone else can help. I use ASUS 24” 1080p monitors that work well.
Hi Pete! Thank you for the video, it is super helpful! So my question is can I use the laptop display too so I will be able to use all 3 monitors if I leave the laptop lid open?
Yes you can. The maximum is 3 monitors total however by the looks.
I just wanted to be sure. I'm not a really techie person and I rely heavily on UA-cam. Thank you for a quick response!
Good videos presentation. I could see one concern. I am working on t470 laptop Lenovo, I have only one charger. So I have connected to Lenovo dock so that extra accessories connection would not be disturbed. Like keyboard mouse internet cable. Currently after connecting the dock with laptop via USB. I am able to access all accessories but unable to charge my laptops. Could you plz guide me
Hey there. You might need to reach out to Lenovo or someone who specialises in this sort of content.
Is this compatible with HP Laptops?
Possibly. I wouldn’t bother paying the extra for this if you’re not using a Lenovo laptop though.
this is exactly what i was looking for, thank you, first time seeing you videos. you got yourself a subscriber
Wonderful! Thanks Carl. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel.
That dock station works only on ibm lenovo laptops and destops?
It may work with others that are powered via USB-C but not guaranteed to work.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for respond
And have you confirmed the compatibility of the laptop with this dock?
did it work with a thinkpad t480 or t490?
Not sure sorry. You might need to check the specs or maybe reach out to Lenovo.
Thank you very much!! my father has a Lenovo E580, I buy the same USB-C Docking Station model, and ALL woks perfect!!! all the ports, the setup, the 3 monitors and also a cable DisplayPort-to-HDMI for the TV! thank you again!
Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to let me know.
Hi, should the docking station power and charge the battery through the USB-C cable? Mine used to do I am 100% of it. Any help should be appreciated.
Yup it should definitely charge your laptop while connected via USB-C.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Great, I knew I was not going mad. Checked Forums and nobody has the Answer.. Very frustrating as I have my USB-C plugged in for the screens and my power cable charging the Laptop defeats the object really.
@@krisbeaumont3693 did you find a solution?
I'm having the exact same issue
Sorry Pete, I didn't I'm afraid, mine is a works PC too. Our Support desk just ask us to contact Lenovo which is not very helpful. My colleague has the exact issue on his Brand new Laptop. It's very frustrating.
@@krisbeaumont3693 I have fixed the issue by plugging another charger into the docking station.
Initially I had a 65W, but now with a 90W charger it works.
Nice demonstration, hey can you connect android phone to this thunderbolt hub via the extra usb-c port and control your phone from the hubs mouse , keyboard and monitor as well as charge your phone? Thx
Good call on Logitech. I love their products.
I’m a big Logitech fan. Always had the best experiences with their mice, keyboards and webcams.
could you show how sound works as mine is not working, thanks
I don’t use this anymore sorry, but sound just works from the headphone jack as per the normal setup in my experience
Sorted after firmware update 😁
Awesome!! So happy when I hear that these videos have helped others
This is a great video, however it makes me realize how much easier it is to connect multiple screens using my mac.
So funny that I’m a Mac user now!

I have a T480s that I would primarily use this for, but would I technically on occasion be able to plug in a desktop as the input USB C source instead?
Yeah, sorry for the delay. Not sure on this sorry?
Yeah, unfortunately it’s a bit hit and miss and dependent upon the hardware so maybe not work with non Lenovo gear.
Pete, I followed your instruction. I have 2 HDMI cables on both end of the cables. The monitors are not being recognized. I am stumped.
Hey Bobby. That’s very strange? The cables I used were the display port types. Just making sure it has the correct connector at the docking station end?
You must use the Lenovo USB c thunderbolt cable. Ordinary cable USB c cable will not work.
@@TeeFat Wow so the wiring is different and can't find a replacement?
Hi, great video! THanks for the info. Quick question: Does the wireless internetconnection on the laptop still work with the docking station?
Yup, WiFi and all other features are still supported.
Pete.
Hello - does the docking station have to be specific to the exact model of the laptop or does it work with all models of Lenovo laptops?
It is for all models that use USB-C for data and power.
Thank you
👍
Hello Pete,
Thinking of purchasing a ThinkPad X1 Yoga for work-at-home.
Thanks!
is there no HDMI port?
No. You’ll need to use the display ports.
Thank you Pete. I was on the fence on this one but I your video was incredibly helpful in settling my nerves about the docking station.
Very welcome my friend.
Hey,
I am looking for a power adaptor for this dock. which one should I go for?(specs and the port type)
Yeah good question. You might need to check the original specs sorry? As I’m not sure.
@@PeteJohnsMusic i just wanted to know the port type and the the Wattage
Great video. Finally got my Lenovo laptop working my Targus docking station. :)

Thanks, this was helpful. You touched on this right at the end but just to be sure you can connect a speaker with USB to the docking station right? I'm about to purchase one but want to make sure I can use the docking station for that instead of having to plug it in directly to the laptop (if that makes sense).
Yup. It supports any USB audio device via the USB ports. 👍
@@PeteJohnsMusic Great! Many thanks for the reply
What if i dont want the laptop to charge/overcharge? How can i stop it since it is plugged in the type C charging port
If you’re using a compatible ThinkPad it will manager the charging through the dock.
