Also one thing worth mentioning when I use this dock with some old Lenovo 90W power supply (same volt and current), I thought since they are both 90W with the same v and c, it would work fine. Then I noticed the keyword would not be recognized sometimes not all the time when the USB C wire is wiggled. Then I switched it to use the power supply that came with the dock then this problem is gone for good. Surprising to see NOT all Lenovo power supply are the same even they are both labeled with 90W with the same volt and current.
Got a weird issue with the 40AY dock. Notebook A works fine with dock AA but not dock BB. B works fine with BB but not with AA. Both docks and notebooks are from the same batch. Both notebooks are from Lenovo. Identical Hardware, OS and Software. All the original cables. Any suggestions?
My issue with the 40AY is that the moment I plug in a monitor, the dock freezes completely. Every peripheral plugged to it stops working and so does my Thinkbook. I've updated all the drivers to latest and nothing...
Hey there! Thanks for the detailed review and demonstration of the Lenovo ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock. It's really helpful to see how it works and how to set it up properly. I'm considering getting one for my setup, and your video has answered a lot of my questions. I have a few more queries: 1. Does the dock support charging the laptop while it's connected? You mentioned a 90W power adapter, but can it charge a laptop while in use? 2. Have you tested this with other laptop brands besides Lenovo? I'm using a different brand, and I want to make sure it's compatible. 3. How's the build quality of the dock? Is it sturdy and durable? Thanks again for the informative video! Looking forward to your response.
It can charge up to 65 watts. I believe if you upgrade the external power supply from 90 watts to 135, it will charge the laptop at 100 Watts. It should work with other models but they have to have a USB type-c that supports data transfer, displayport, and power delivery all in one connector. I have had success with other brands in this regard. The build quality is very good and the only issues I've had is with the type cable itself or the port on a computer
Is it normal that it still uses the Akku when connected to the dock? It's got the power supply from the dock but with my old Lenovo on the docking station it would never use the Akku..
Your wireless keyboard will either be Bluetooth and talk directly to the computer, or have a USB receiver that can be put in either the computer or the dock. This dock will support three monitors, but the video chipset in your laptop has to have support for three as well.
Great video, Thanks. I’m confused on something and hope you can help.Doesn’t the graphics card control how many external monitors are supported? Thanks
I just recently purchased this for my wife (I'm on my wife's account posting this) for her Thinkpad E15 Gen 3 Intel work laptop and I'm having some severe issues with one of the monitors having small white and green flickering pixelation and disconnecting with a small black line appearing occasionally. I tried to update the firmware on it, but it kept failing and said unable to update. I have a lenovo Legion Y730, a Yoga 7i, and the Thinkpad e15. When doing the firmware do I need to use the front or rear USB-C.... I've tried both and they won't take the update. Thanks for the informative video sir
Greetings. Is connecting Ethernet cable to dock and getting internet trough USB-C superior way compared to Wifi connection? Or is it better to plug Ethernet directly to my laptop?
I’ve a question. I ran the Lenovo USBC GEN2 dock with a p52. Anytime the P52 was unplugged, I'd get a message on the laptop screen indicating the dock needed PCPower. This was odd as the dock was only handling data for self-powered peripheral devices. Later, I added a lenovo Slim 7I 16-inch laptop. I have lost three motherboards immediately after receiving that same “plug the PC back in” message from the dock. The dock seemed to be properly configured. My only worry is that the front low-powered USB-C connection might have been used instead of the dedicated USB-c port on the back. Have you seen this happen? Thank You
Great video. Can I use Lenovo Powered USB-C Travel Hub for Dual Monitor setup? Also, is it possible to hook up one of the monitor in the HDMI port of the laptop while the Lenovo USB-C is plugged?
I have the same dock that i use for my P15 Gen 2 Thinkpad from work. I'm thinking of getting a personal laptop that i can use with the same docking station - would it work with a thinkbook 13s gen 4?
Great video! Do you think this will work with Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14ARH7 82UU with ryzen 7 6800HS? The laptop has a full USB4 type-c port that supports 40Gbps bandwidth and the usb4 standard is compatible with both TB3 and TB4. I will need the 135w supply I suppose since my laptop comes with 100w charger and drains up to around 80w in maximum load. Also, to be able to use the full bandwidth of 40Gbps which my port and this hub both support, do you think I will need a tb4/usb4 cable to connect the dock or will the one that comes with the device suffice?
i have this dock and am using it on an HP laptop from work. tried setting up dual monitors using one hdmi, one DP cable. resolution for the 1st monitor connected through hdmi works fine but the 2nd monitor connected through DP does not show the correct resolution i connected that 2nd monitor with hdmi straight to my laptop and resolution appears correct as expected. any idea why routing a DP cable through the dock does not show the resolution correctly? will attempt using DP cable through dock again but this time disconnecting my laptop monitor as a display to see if that works. it could be the case that there's just too many displays and one needs to be closed for the other 2 to work
The newer one in this video is the 40AY0090US model. Would you know if the older one in the video, the 40AS0090US supports up to 3 monitors as well? I have one and I cannot get it to add a third external monitor, even though my video card, a UHD Graphics 620 supports up to three monitors.
@@ZipTieNinja I see... Thanks a lot for your response. But the newer one does support three external monitors as you say, right? Or is the laptop screen counted as a monitor?
Great video. I just got a 4K 144 Hz Samsung Odyssey G70A gaming monitor that I'd like to use as a 2nd work monitor too next to an iiyama Full HD 60 Hz monitor. I'm using my Surface Laptop 4 which has a USB-C connection. Using the Lenovo docking station that you set up in this video, should I use DisplayPort or HDMI for the 144 Hz monitor? Hi, I recently got a 2022 Lenovo Thinkbook 15 Gen 4 Laptop. Do you think this dock would work with it? If Yes, would you be kind to share with me the kind of monitors (Lenovo products) I can get alongside this for my display extensions ( 3 monitors preferably). It works fine for about 7 hours and the if I happen to switch back to my laptop docking station, my laptop says USC device not recognized and the usb ports on the docking station no longer work. I have had tried at least 4 different switches and it happens to all of them, leading me to this the issue is with the docking station. Any ideas why or what I can do?
Hey! Great video! Does it work with Lenovo Legion 5 15IMH05H? I wanted to look for a compatible docking station for the laptop and preferably Lenovo brand.
I have this dock that I bought for use with a Lenovo Slim7 16". The Slim 7 has been so buggy that I am now returning the second one. I am abandoning Lenovo and going to Macbook Pro. Now I'm stuck with the dock. I'm assuming the "Universal name" applies to PCs and this won't work with a Macbook Pro M1 14"? Could you confirm?
I don't know what the point of connecting this to a desktop PC would really be. These are designed for laptops that have "DisplayPort, Power Delivery, and Data Transfer all-in-one connector". So, I think it may function as a USB hub, and if your Thunderbolt Port supports DisplayPort, would allow video output. Obviously your Thunderbolt is not meant to receive power, so you could damage something just by plugging it in (but hopefully someone thought of that, and has engineered these things to protect against it)
No, and I'm not sure exactly what will work best. Most type-c monitors are actually displayport, so a DisplayPort to type c may work but I've never tried it in reverse as you will be using it
@@ZipTieNinja Thanks, I am interested in Lenovo ThinkVision M15 which shows a USB C port OUT. I assume the IN to the computer has to be a USB C as well. Perhaps I am wrong?
Bonsoir, peut-on reset ce dock ? Parce que je rencontre un problème avec des utilisateurs qui me grilles des docks parce qu’ils n’alimentent plus le pc auriez vous une solution à me proposer ? Merci pour cette vidéo.
I have a fantastic bargain deal for this model (40B20135US). However, I'm genuinely concerned that I might be backed into a corner if it becomes obsolete because Thunderbolt 4 is the latest standard. Nevertheless, in one product description, I noticed some mention of Thunderbolt 4. So, my question is, is this truly a Thunderbolt 4 dock or not? Is it still worth buying this in the this quarter of 2023?
It is not thunderbolt, but both can use a Type-C port. That doesn't mean it is not compatible with Thunderbolt ports, since most are what's considered "USB4"
Hello! I have a Lenovo Legion 5 pro (gen8) USB-C 3.2 de 2.ª generación (DisplayPort™ 1.4) I have two extra monitors i want to connect to this dock (2k 144hz + standard 1080p 60hz), can i do it with this dock?? thanks!!!! My other problem its that my notebook needs 300w and the usb c has PD but only to 100W (i dont want to use Power Delivery :z)
Yes, the dock will support everything you state except power delivery. You will have to use your own power supply, of course. That said, the doc only supports monitor configurations the graphics card will support. So, it is machine dependent.
Hi! my laptop is always connected to the dock and I have to disconnect and reconnect the usb-c cabel every time I turn on the laptop. I want to be able to press the on/off button on the dock and not have to insert the cord every time. Anyone else who have this problem?
The button is only compatible with ThinkPad Lenovo computers. If yours is, please try to run Lenovo system update in order to check for firmware updates for both devices
Hi, thanks for your video. I just got this dock and also the 135W charger to get 100W for my Lenovo laptop that comes originally with a USB-C 100W charger. But I get a warning message about not receiveng enough wattage both before Windows loads and insode Windows over the battery icon. I have all drivers and firmware updated. Have you heard of this problem? I still have no luck with Lenovo support.
I've never had the chance to test it. Every laptop I've used that needs more than 65 Watts has had to have its own dedicated power adapter because of a powerful Graphics card. Sorry I can't help more.
Regarding the 135w adapter, does that replace the 65w one that came with the dock or does that need to be connected directly into the laptop along with the USB-C cable coming out of the dock? My laptop popped up a message saying the dock wasn't supplying sufficient enough power and that I had to plug in the original power adapter.
@@ZipTieNinja hi so I purchased the 135 watt adapter and used that on the dock. However, when I plug into my laptop via USB-C, my laptop gave a warning that it has a "weak charging state, please check power charger." Does that mean the charger is faulty? I actually just checked the original power brick for my Lenovo P1 4th Gen, it's a 170W 😐. Is there a dock out there capable of matching that? The dock I have is the 40AY0090.
There's more to it than that if you want the full functionality of the docking station. The USB type-c has to contain power delivery, data transfer, and displayport.
Question: what are the minimum specs a laptop needs to support three monitors? I have a Lenovo Thinkpad laptop, but I’m not sure where I can find those specs.
hi thanks for the kind video i'm wondering is it working at M2 macbook pro apple silicon?? i want to connet 2 display. not a mirroring mode. i want a extend two monitor
Do you know if Freesync can work when using this dock? The option is greyed out when I use the dock and I don't know if it's a cable issue or a limitation of the dock.
It does not work with my cell phone, and I doubt it will work with any. The video built into this is DisplayPort. These are really only designed for Lenovo thinkpads, but seem to be fairly compatible with other laptops assuming you have a USB type-c that has displayport, power delivery, and data transfer all in one port.
Hell great video, I would like to know if I could connect 3 externals monitor to the Lenovo Universal USB-C, (Samsung 49"(two screen 120Hz or 60Hz) and ASUS 120Hz)), I know for a fact that I can connect the Monitor Samsung but when I connect the Lenovo one no matter what I do, it doesn't work, thanks
The Dock uses the graphics built into your computer, so it's probably a limitation of what the graphics can do as far as number of monitors/resolution/ refresh rates
At work, I tried installing a P52s laptop dual monitor setup and have flickering display issues on one of the monitors. I thinking it's a bad USB-C port on the laptop, but how would you replace or fix it?
Hi i got the dock showing on the second monitor. But the power on button on the dock doesnt seem to turn on the laptop. It still has a white light, but when u press it, it does nothing. So i have to open the lid on my laptop to turn it on. Know any reason why the dock power button is not working?
Very disappointing that there is no compatible docking station (at least not according to the Lenovo Support site) for my IdeaPad Gaming 3. Despite the name, I didn't even get the stupid thing for gaming. I'm a professional software engineer and needed it's power, but not having a docking station sucks! 😢
Typically they do work, they just won't power the laptop too, since it has dedicated graphics that require too much power for a dock. As long as there is a type c that has display port and data transfer built in, the docking station will do all functions except power delivery.
I just bought the Lenovo thunderbolt 4 dock. It comes with 130w adapter and i’ll be using it with Lenovo Legion 7i 8th gen (4090). Does the dock have enough power? The laptop adapter is 350w I think. Please let me know
hello there! i hope you can help me. i have this universal type C ThinkPad dock however my windows laptop (not Lenovo) does not support DP but allows PD charging. i have 2 monitors now, could you please advise me on how am i able to connect 2 monitors to this hub and then to my laptop?
If your USB-C doesn't have DP, this isn't the right dock for you. I guess you can use a USB video adapter. Not the best to run video over USB, though: amzn.to/3MEFT9r
Would Ubuntu linux work with it well? Can I connect 2 laptops to the same dock? If I need to switch between 2 laptops? Would it work with 144hz monitor?
Certainly! Here's the corrected sentence:"Hello, can you please let me know how to stop the continuous charging on my laptop while working with multiple monitors? My laptop is getting overheated while using a docking station."
All of these details are in the video and the description. This dock utilizes the video chipset built into the PC, so it depends on what Graphics the laptop has. It should work with an HP but it is certainly not designed to.
That's not enough information for me to really help. Are you adapting DisplayPort to something else to go into your monitors? What computer do you have?
@@ZipTieNinja The DP cable is connected to the monitor and the dock. Issue is when I connect the type c cable from the dock, my laptop recharges does not detect the monitor display.

Good morning, the USB-C port on the notebook where you connected the Dock must be Thunderbolt?
No, but it must support data transfer, displayport, and power delivery
I have everything hooked up correctly. When I turn on my laptop it don’t show on the monitors
I have Lenovo P53 (20QQ) with 170 Watt power supply. Can I use this docking station with my own 170 Watt power supply?
I have this dock that I bought for use with a Lenovo Slim7 16". The Slim 7 has been so buggy that I am now returning the second one. I am abandoning Lenovo and going to Macbook Pro. Now I'm stuck with the dock. I'm assuming the "Universal name" applies to PCs and this won't work with a Macbook Pro M1 14"? Could you confirm?
I've used it with Intil MacBook Pros but not M series yet. Good luck!
Can we use this with big desktop PC for thunderbolt 3 ? Have anyone tried this before on big desktop (PC) ?
I don't know what the point of connecting this to a desktop PC would really be. These are designed for laptops that have "DisplayPort, Power Delivery, and Data Transfer all-in-one connector". So, I think it may function as a USB hub, and if your Thunderbolt Port supports DisplayPort, would allow video output. Obviously your Thunderbolt is not meant to receive power, so you could damage something just by plugging it in (but hopefully someone thought of that, and has engineered these things to protect against it)
My monitor only comes with a USB C connector, do I connect it to the sole USB C type on the front of the docking station?
No, and I'm not sure exactly what will work best. Most type-c monitors are actually displayport, so a DisplayPort to type c may work but I've never tried it in reverse as you will be using it
@@ZipTieNinja Thanks, I am interested in Lenovo ThinkVision M15 which shows a USB C port OUT. I assume the IN to the computer has to be a USB C as well. Perhaps I am wrong?
Can use this for.. 300W lenovo legion slim 7i model with i7 13700 and 4060
yes, but you must power the laptop with the power adapter that came with it.
Hey Mate, great video, you said you would list compatible usbc cables, where is your list?
I just brought an aftermarket cable and doesn’t work 😢
This has worked for me in the past. Thanks!

Can I use the power on off option for both Lenovo IdeaPad 330 and Thinkpad Ryzen 7 ?
This docking station does not work with an IdeaPad 330.
Bonsoir, peut-on reset ce dock ? Parce que je rencontre un problème avec des utilisateurs qui me grilles des docks parce qu’ils n’alimentent plus le pc auriez vous une solution à me proposer ? Merci pour cette vidéo.
Perfect instructions. Thank you!!
You're welcome!
can you please share how to update firmware of new docking station
Can I use one to connect my 2019 MacBook Pro to?
Hello! I have a Lenovo Legion 5 pro (gen8) USB-C 3.2 de 2.ª generación (DisplayPort™ 1.4)
I have two extra monitors i want to connect to this dock (2k 144hz + standard 1080p 60hz), can i do it with this dock??
Hi, Does it support 144hz for 1440p? Thanks!
Hi! my laptop is always connected to the dock and I have to disconnect and reconnect the usb-c cabel every time I turn on the laptop.
The 135 watt adapter should replace the 100 W adapter that the dock came with.
@@ZipTieNinja thank you!
Does it have to be connected to the Ethernet? Or could I just go off wifi?
Ethernet is optional, you can still use the Wi-Fi built into the laptop.
Is this dock compatible with other hp, dell laptops as long as it has usb c charger port ?
There's more to it than that if you want the full functionality of the docking station. The USB type-c has to contain power delivery, data transfer, and displayport.
@@ZipTieNinja thanks, and is there any way to check that for any laptop model?
Question: what are the minimum specs a laptop needs to support three monitors? I have a Lenovo Thinkpad laptop, but I’m not sure where I can find those specs.
Assuming it has integrated graphics, if it's Intel, you can look up the processor and it will tell you how many monitors it supports
Do all Universal docks compatible with T480?
Yes it should work. I don't have one to test, though.
hi thanks for the kind video i'm wondering is it working at M2 macbook pro apple silicon?? i want to connet 2 display. not a mirroring mode. i want a extend two monitor
It worked on Intel Macs, but I haven't had the chance to test it on a M1 or M2
Do you know if Freesync can work when using this dock? The option is greyed out when I use the dock and I don't know if it's a cable issue or a limitation of the dock.
I'm not sure. This is basically just using DisplayPort video out, so I would think it would work...
does it only work on lenovo thinkpad laptops or does it work on anything with a usb c port that outputs video for example a phone?
If it is working fine with another laptop, then you're probably correct about the port. The port may or may not be replaceable.
Hi i got the dock showing on the second monitor. But the power on button on the dock doesnt seem to turn on the laptop. It still has a white light, but when u press it, it does nothing. So i have to open the lid on my laptop to turn it on. Know any reason why the dock power button is not working?
This feature only works with a ThinkPad PC from Lenovo. In this use case, I've never had an issue with the power button
@@ZipTieNinjaahh ok thanks for the reply 🙏
Very disappointing that there is no compatible docking station (at least not according to the Lenovo Support site) for my IdeaPad Gaming 3. Despite the name, I didn't even get the stupid thing for gaming. I'm a professional software engineer and needed it's power, but not having a docking station sucks! 😢
Typically they do work, they just won't power the laptop too, since it has dedicated graphics that require too much power for a dock. As long as there is a type c that has display port and data transfer built in, the docking station will do all functions except power delivery.
How do you add the third monitor
One question. Can the dock work without a power source connected to it like a usb hub?
Unfortunately, no.
I just bought the Lenovo thunderbolt 4 dock. It comes with 130w adapter and i’ll be using it with Lenovo Legion 7i 8th gen (4090). Does the dock have enough power? The laptop adapter is 350w I think. Please let me know
No, you will still have to use the power adapter that came with the laptop as well as the dock
hello there! i hope you can help me. i have this universal type C ThinkPad dock however my windows laptop (not Lenovo) does not support DP but allows PD charging.
i have 2 monitors now, could you please advise me on how am i able to connect 2 monitors to this hub and then to my laptop?
If your USB-C doesn't have DP, this isn't the right dock for you. I guess you can use a USB video adapter. Not the best to run video over USB, though:
amzn.to/3MEFT9r
Will this work with Lenovo legion gaming laptops?
yes, except you'll have to use the factory power adapter plugged directly into the laptop & the dock will do the other functions
Would Ubuntu linux work with it well?
Can I connect 2 laptops to the same dock? If I need to switch between 2 laptops?
Would it work with 144hz monitor?
Never used it with a Linux personally. You can easily swap it between laptops. Specs are in the video as far as monitor support and refresh rates
I have an "Ideapad" - Can I just naively assume that Thinkpad decks will work with an Ideapad?
No. You have to have a type c that has display port, data transfer, and power delivery, all in one connector. Not all IdeaPads have this
does this dock work for Thinkpad running Linux?
Certainly! Here's the corrected sentence:"Hello, can you please let me know how to stop the continuous charging on my laptop while working with multiple monitors? My laptop is getting overheated while using a docking station."
Excellent video!!! Thank you
You're welcome!
Whats the max resolution are you getting on DP and can the Dock be used for a HP Laptop.
All of these details are in the video and the description. This dock utilizes the video chipset built into the PC, so it depends on what Graphics the laptop has. It should work with an HP but it is certainly not designed to.
Thank you for this good video.
You're welcome!
The displayport are not working with this dock. Only HDMI works. Do you have any idea why?
That's not enough information for me to really help. Are you adapting DisplayPort to something else to go into your monitors? What computer do you have?
@@ZipTieNinja The DP cable is connected to the monitor and the dock. Issue is when I connect the type c cable from the dock, my laptop recharges does not detect the monitor display.
@@ZipTieNinjaWere you able to display your laptop screen using a DP cable from the dock?
will work with Lenovo V330-15IKB ?
I doubt it, as it is made for ThinkPads. It requires a USB-C with DisplayPort, Power Delivery, and Data Transfer all-in-one connector".
Hi sir, does it support 144hz monitor? At least like 1 monitor 1080p 144hz + another one 60hz. I'm thinking of buying it for work laptop but occasionally I might want to use it for my main laptop
does it works with u 144hz monitor ?
Do these only work with thinkpads or will they work with any thunderbolt laptop?
Typically any Thunderbolt, but not necessarily charging, depending on the power needs of the laptop.
What should you do if you don’t have a type c port on a ThinkCentre??
Without a ThinkPas with USB-C, you will need a DisplayLink type like this:
amzn.to/3wa03ic
How does this dock charge the laptop? Do we need to plug in and also which port?
This laptop charges via the USB-C from the dock. Not all laptops have USB-C power delivery. Those require you to use your laptop power adapter.
Does it support with lenovo legion 7?
If one of the monitor displays “out of range” what does it mean?
Most likely, resolution or refresh rate
