  • The Acer Predator X34A is the ultimate Ultrawide monitor. 100hz refresh & G-Sync make this a perfect gaming monitor - but it comes at a steep price. But is it worth the cost and should you buy one?
    Buy:

    Acer provided this monitor on loan for review.

    Hey there, good review!
    I found out when looking for an ultrawide 3440x1440 monitor is that there are only two options if you want to go for G-sync, the X34 and the PG348Q. With Freesync there are a whole bunch of different options, flat screen/curved, 60hz/75hz, various styles and colours. So if you want 3440x1440 on an ultrawide with G-sync it's £1000 or nothing.
    G-sync gets understated is how effective it is with lower spec graphics cards. I've upgraded to the X34A from an old Samsung 24" 1920x1200 and it feels like I've got a new graphics card. I'm running two GTX770's in SLI and everything seems so much smoother with G-sync. I'm nowhere near 60-100fps, probably more around the 40fps mark which is right where G-sync does it's magic. I assumed I'd be downscaling to a much lower resolution on most games but I'm happy to say its not the case.

      really thing manufactures need to start coming out with different styles of each monitor they make because this monitor looks lovely but id rather not have a curved display.

    Cool can't wait for the Asus review! I'm still hesitating between which of the 2 buy but then I might wait for 2017 and see what's coming. Plus I might go for a 1080ti purchase alongside so we will see and I can keep saving :)

    Hey man great vid. Which would you say is has the better overall picture quality? The dell U3415 or the X34A? I briefly owned the acer xr341ck but after 2 RMAs I'll called it quits. That said, I absolutely loved the picture quality. I'm now really considering the dell as 60hz and no sync tech should be fine for me. What's your thoughts? Thanks!

    Nice vid. I've got a normal X34 which I bought refurb for about £750 several months ago (you can currently pick one up for about £550!). It's not something I'd have considered before but it is a superb monitor. Anyone who's not tried ultra wide, you're missing out. And if £ is an issue (let's face it, £1k is a lot to spend on a monitor unless you are rich and single) then look for either a refurb or used one. From the video, sounds like they have made some nice improvements on the X34A though...

    I set up my X34A and never feel the need to maul the glossy back so why would it be a fingerprint magnet ? I mean it's not like a glossy mouse that I'd have to maul all the time so it's not a problem. It's practically the same panel as the ASUS only the lights on the ASUS are useless compared to the light bar under the X34A - Thanks ;-)

    I got it a couple days ago. When DTS (in the monitor settings) is enabled, I get distorted sounds, sometimes ok (if you watch dialogues and so on) sometimes just unbearable (while playing). The sound comes from the display port connected to the nvidia card. I googled and many people have the same problem (some people wouldn't even notice but I am sensitive). Without DTS there is no problem but it sounds much worse (and less). It is not related to volume, because the same audio file would crack even with low volume. Is there any way to fix it, besides using alternative speakers or disabling the DTS option? Google didn't help me enough.

    I am going to buy either this monitor or the ASUS PG348Q. So I really appreciate this review and would really look forward to a direct comparison.
    Quick question Tech Chap, I am coming from playing my PC on a 16:9 32" TV. I cant decide whether to get a ultra wide such as the two i just mentioned, or go with a faster 16:9.
    So I guess what i am asking is should I get the ASUS PG279Q or one of these to ultra wides(Acer Predator X34A/ASUS PG348Q)???
    Thanks in advance and I really love your videos, you deserve more subs

      All down to price and styling as they're the same panel. The Asus styling is a bit more 'gamer' looking in my opinion.
      One thing to check out is the size of the stand. My X34A stands a good few inches further forward on my desk due to the rear foot on the stand. Not sure whether the PG348Q suffers the same.

  • @timofaust1315
    @timofaust1315 7 років тому

    Bought my X34a 2 months ago and now have to RMA the second time:
    First time I had a blurry line that was 2 fingers thick at the top of my screen which was clearly visible in games and even on desktop when you scrolled over window borders.
    After the return i got a model with the loudest coil whine I have ever heard.
    Both have clearly visible BLB and IPS glow.
    This monitor would be godsend when working well. Getting really upset that you still play lottery for a 1300 Euro product.

    Hi! I bought this Monitor today (X34A) , someone know if this monitor support 3440x1440 over HDMI 1.4 ? For now i have a low-end gpu with no DP port (geforce GT640 3gb), but i cant get it to run more than 1920x1080, even if the gpu should be able to output 3840x2160 . I think the problem is that my gpu only can display that res. over hdmi 2.0 , and the monitor has only 1.4 Someone can verify this? Thanks

    I find it silly that Acer released this monitor after announcing X34P, which has joystick controls, comes out of the box with 100Hz refresh rate and is essentially greatly improved X34. Now they released on the market something in-between only to make more money before release of much better X34P. My advice - be patient, wait 1-2 more months and you can have shiny, all-improved Acer X34P.

    • @terryd8692
      @terryd8692 7 років тому

      The X34P is more curved too. Various reviews complain that curved monitors distort their work (or rather their work looks distorted because they've created it on a curved monitor). The curve on the X34A isn't too pronounced.

      No its a myth as above caused by one youtuber with a problem. The X34 runs 100hz fine with G-Sync enabled. These are 100hz "overclock", so sure the odd display might only hit 95hz which is still good (and rare), but needs to be pointed out.

      that's a good question - i'm looking into it now for a new video. TV's would be best (for 4K + HDR), but a monitor like the Samsung U32E850R is a great choice (although it is quite expensive). I haven't used the CFG70 personally though so I can't really comment

    • @KushGames

      The Tech Chap Thank you for your swift response, yeah the CFG70 just launched a few days ago, it's a 1080p 144hz 1ms curved screen with quantum dot technology. I'm confused if I should go with a 4k monitor for the ps4 pro, or just a very good 1ms good color screen 1080p monitor.
      Coz getting a HDR monitor is hard/impossible too..

      Later manufactured units of the X34, kinda March 2016 onwards appear to have most issued ironed out. The X34a really only brings swivel to the table, but IPS has great viewing angles so perhaps swivel is a not so important for most people.
      There is ZERO difference in performance the X34 and X34a have the same panel.

  • @PiousSlayer

    Is this the brand new one they were recently working on? I thought it was X34P or something and was natively 100hz without an overclock?
    Source of my inquiry: www.144hzmonitors.com/monitors/acer-predator-x34p-100hz-curved-ultrawide-ips-wqhd-g-sync/

      i think the difference is 100hz native refresh, rather than through overclock. so you may be able to overclock the new x34p further

    i saw a review of the original X34 monitor and it said that you couldn't use G-sync when you overclocked it to 100Hz, only at the factory speed of 60Hz. Can you use G-sync at 100Hz on this model?

    • @Battleneter
      @Battleneter 7 років тому

      That review is flat out wrong and I posted a comment accordingly. I am using a X34 with 100hz G-Sync right now and the built in G-sync frame counter shows up to 100fps while gaming as expected. That guy had some sort of odd cable issue as far as I could tell.

    • @Thetechchap

      Krzych indeed yes they kindly provided a review sample for 2 weeks. This is the case for pretty much all my reviews:)

    • @krzych3114
      @krzych3114 7 років тому +1

      Thing is that original X34 or Asus PG348Q also got great reviews, but reality was disastrous and getting good unit without extreme issues was possible only in fanboy legends. Review samples are cherrypicked and they rarely exist in reality if you want to actually buy one from shop. I understand that you have to work like that because there is no way to have money for all of this stuff you are reviewing, but reliability of review made on review sample, especially for a monitor, is very very limited. Especially for a review of revision of the most faulty monitor in the history. This is why I asked how you got this monitor.

    • @TheChrisglasgow
      @TheChrisglasgow 7 років тому +1

      Krzych my pg348q is flawless.

    • @Thetechchap
      @Thetechchap  7 років тому

      Krzych that's fair and I do stress in the video I can only attest to the quality of the monitor I have there. you may well be right but the issues you mentioned are supposed to be addressed by this 'A' revision of the X34

    • @krzych3114
      @krzych3114 7 років тому +5

      This is why I asked, I am curious to see how much they actually improved themselves and quality control and if this monitor is usable right now, but to even start to talk about it we need actual unit, not cherrypicked review sample. Basically you will never know until you get one yourself, at least one, on purpose of really reliable review I would need three with different manufacturing dates, bought by me personally from 3 different retailers, just to be sure. Getting excited over cherrypicked review sample is surely looking good, but I wonder how many manufacturers would take the challenge of serious review.

      Lenard Prinsloo Ok So I made a mistake, the computer I want to get has a 1070, I will post the specs here and can you tell me if this monitor will now be good for me?
      Specs below: Specs:
      - Intel Core i7 6700K CPU
      - 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Memory
      - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB
      - CPU Liquid Cooling
      - 480GB SSD Digital Storm
      - 2TB 7200RPM Storage HDD
      - Z170 Chipset Motherboard
      - 750W EVGA SuperNOVA PSU
      - DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW
      - Microsoft Windows 10

    • @lenardprinsloo5515
      @lenardprinsloo5515 7 років тому

      you should be fine to run games on this ultra-wide with a 1070, you will be able to comfortably reach 60fps in all new game titles. Some games might require you to tweak with graphics settings a bit but all the games should still look amazing. This is a all out top of the line monitor so the best solution would be a gtx1080 but if you really want an ultra-wide and only have a 1070 it should work just fine. Just keep an eye out as there are other ultrawide monitors that are less expensive without g-sync for example. But all in all you should be fine with this if you have a 1070.
