I got both the Acer X34a and Asus PG348Q for testing. I ended up keeping the ASUS because the Acer feels too cheap. Glossy plastic, some regular stock PSU and just overall worse quality feel. The light bleed was a bit better on the Acer, but the trade-offs were not worth it I felt. Relatively speaking they both have quite a lot of bleeding compared to my previous Asus PG279Q, which almost had none.
Great video, and for a change, a reviewer actually mentioning backlight bleed (a manufacturing/QA fault), and not just ips glow which is par for the course with ips tech. Although saying that the bleed isn't any worse that others, is a sad indictment of the monitor manufacturers we are stuck with, because that bleed was pretty bad.
Nice review! One thing you didn't saw is that the pg348Q does have cable-management, the 2 grey clips you pop off for mounting the stand can be used to put cables to the back ;)
I guess it varies from sample to sample but this one wasn't particularly bad. Certainly it wasn't distracting at all during normal use - the images showing backlight bleed in the video are with the brightness at full and the camera ISO bumped up high. Unfortunately variation from sample to sample isn't something I'm able to test. Not until I make my millions off UA-cam and can afford to buy several of them. :)
i just got the pg348q on amazon for 768 dollars (used but not really, the only difference between the new and used one would have been the box would have not been opened.) I gotta say, even though this monitor has been out a while it is still just amazing, and for 768 dollars, you really arent gonna get too much better.
+TechyTalk i likes this video it was very informative and you have way to many subs. You make Hardwarecannucks-style videos but have that less? Maybe try to get to Ed's Setup Wars youtuber edition or so.
I own a PG348Q. May 2016 build. BLB is very minimal. Can only be noticed a tiny bit on a solid black wallpaper (top left corner). The build quality and OSD is extremely good. Love this monitor. Best that i've owned. I saw an X34 in person and it just looked like a cheaper product and I wasn't a can of the menus. I got the 348 during an ebay promotion so it sweetened the deal ;). I've OC'd my monitor to 100hz with a 780. Plays games like cod and cs:go @ 100fps. The website recommends a 980+ though for a smooth experience.
Sir Stiv glad to know you got a good one. im currently gaming on 1080p 24inch 60hz. ima try to go balls in the wall and buy a 34ultrawide. now, its just a matter of checking be it a asus, samsung, acer, lg, etc.... thanks for your input.
Ugh, I'm about to buy one of these two panels, but can't decide which. I'm leaning towards the Asus, and am also considering possibly getting the PG279q instead for its higher refresh rate.
Thanks. I'm not (yet) a PC gamer but after watching your review of the AOC U3477PQU the input lag issue put me off so I thought I'd browse your UA-cam channel. This looks ace but it's way over my budget. What would you recommend currently between £400-£500 please? I'm not fussed about a curved screen but would ideally like something with a vertical resolution of at least 1440.
Best review I've seen so far. I have read that Acer comes with 60hz you need to overclock to 100... the overclocking is just going into the menu and boosting it? or do you need to flash firmware or some weird stuff like you for video cards?
I my humble opinion I choose the X34 first, but when discovered the PG348Q I choose it personally I like Asus products more but both of them are great monitors it all comes down to personal preference in this one.
Damn how much better is that one than the Acer Predator xb271hu??!? Because I just bought the xb271hu and I'm pretty impressed..how much better could it look?
great intuitive review:) I'm still torn between the two! I've just invested 5k in a behemoth system and need the 4k ultra wide cherry on the top but which one :( lol
as in the monitor is only capable of 1440 horizontal lines whereas 4k has 2160 horizontal lines. Whether any normal person would notice the difference is up for debate but if you're looking for a 4k monitor then this isn't it. So it could upscale to 1440p.
The Acer "A" model is much more curved than the Asus pg348, worth to mention. Personally i would pick the Asus, cause i cant stand the acer brand(they made sooooo much crap in the past)
Bravo man great review....Still toren between both these monitors. Have a Dell U2711, awesome monitor but seeking more real estate so these 2 are on the cards although I heard acer are bringing out a newer version of the predator soon is this correct?
Is it me or does the X34a look a little bit bigger? the edge on the bottom aligns perfectly with the PG348Q but sticks out a little bit on the top. Maybe it's the camera angle don't know, would love a clarification.
I got it a couple days ago. When DTS (in the monitor settings) is enabled, I get distorted sounds, sometimes ok (if you watch dialogues and so on) sometimes just unbearable (while playing). The sound comes from the display port connected to the nvidia card. I googled and many people have the same problem (some people wouldn't even notice but I am sensitive). Without DTS there is no problem but it sounds much worse (and less). It is not related to volume, because the same audio file would crack even with low volume. Is there any way to fix it, besides using alternative speakers or disabling the DTS option? Google didn't help me enough.
(Money isn't a problem) - I'm stuck between X34a or PG348Q. Can anyone help or tell me which one has a better coloring (very immersive) although both of them almost the same in specs and comparison. I really don't care about design, easy USB 3.0 ports, 100mhz. I just like more detail color such as playing forza horizon 3, skyrim. I own a ROG SWIFT PG279Q (TN Monitor). I kinda feel regretted buying a TN, since I thought I would like faster responsible than better coloring ISP. Thank for whoever answer the question and providing a good detail.
I bought the Asus. I couldn't see any real reason to pick one over the other. So I went with past products. I have always thought my Asus products were top tier. Most Acer products I've owned have either been cheap, or felt cheap.
Heyho TechyTalk, I may have something to criticise on your video: you talk really, really fast, making it near impossible for someone that doesn't understand english properly to actually understand what you are talking about. I myself have no problems with it, but others may have, otherwise great review!
My Predator monitor says in the manual that the sound cable, bulky usb 2.0 male end, can be plugged in optionally for audio. What would be the benefit of plugging it in? Also, noob question, but I don’t have to plug in both the hdmi and the DP cable to get the full refresh rate and resolution, right?
The x34p for me. The z35p has a slower response time and refresh rate. You get higher contrast with the z35p but I'd take the other benefits of the x34p over this alone.
Sorry, just realised you asked about the z35p vs the pg348q. Either way, I'd take the x34p. :D It's basically identical to the pg348q but better in a couple of crucial ways - faster refresh rate and better design.
This confuses me a tad, this is not the Acer X34P that is to come in a few months with the swivel, OSD joystick, mat back and extra curve (not sure if good or bad), THIS is a bog standard Acer X34 with swivel which most don't have!, Good review btw!
You're quite right. Sort of forgot half way through the review that it is actually a slightly different model as all the branding on the box is still just X34 and it's the only version now available in most shops - I've updated the video title to reflect this. I'll be sure to look at the X34P as soon as I can too.
not alot of difference between the x34 and x34A though, they fixed a few issues such as backlight bleed, a problem where people would get vertical lines on thier screen, more stable overclock to 100hz among some. its important to note that the new x34P will have an more agressive curv and will be stock 100hz out of the box without having to overclock
the amount of time ive spent staring at tech..kinda depressing xD right now im thinking about getting one of these myself or wait for OLEDs to come out and drop a little. not like its out yet but the Dell UP3017Q is sexy..but unfortunatly, i wont be able to afford it :P
I would gladly gives up the curved display to save a little, if I could find such a display. is there a 34" ultrawide G-sync 100Hz display that isn't curved?
calibration in an essence is adjustment of Monitor settings. You can of course simply plug the monitor and use it, however image might be too bright or too contrasted for your taste. So you adjust it. That's what calibration is. :)
No, that is not calibration (well, in a sense it is, but still not, let me explain) What cryohellinc described is to adjust the image to your personal taste. But that is not a calibration. When calibrating, you use a color calibrator-device, eg. the colormunki i1 display pro. That device, which you place onto your monitor, measures the color accuracy, brightness, contrast, gamma, etc. All these values are standardized: E.g. a fully white image should have a blue, red, green value of 255 (in an 8-bit environment). But because of minor differences in components, or just bad software/hardware the colors can be off a bit, and the "white" is not really white. It might have a blue or red tint for example. Now the calibrator, as I said, measures the above measured parameters and makes a custom color profile that overrides the default color profile in your GPU correcting for the faulty colors. Thus the colors you will see are the correct colors. That is calibration.
is there any difference between 100hz and 144hz? i wanna buy an ultrawide, currently holding up and waiting for the 200hz ones hitting maybe soon but my patience runs dry and thinking of buying the 348q asus, at 100. would there be any difference in terms of fps visibile to the human eye? i ve been playing bf1 mostly and that runs very good at 60-80 but it can go up to 120 sometimes...i think that 100hz is more than enough for any game to run smooth. i don t see the big fuss for going more than that. but maybe there is, i never tried it. i would give it a chance tho'. what do you guys think? i'm talking about strictly fps now. i would pay a couple hundred bucks more for that HDR, quantum dot if it makes a significant difference in visuals. i'm only buying a monitor once every 5 years so fuck it, YOLO.
you made a poor decision on showing a movie to showcase how bad/good the BLB is,you should have found a really rich dark movie, like a space movie orsomething like that. The same goes for your pg348q review. But you are far better reviewer of the monitor that any other I watched on youtube.
Horrible non-uniform light bleed and some clouding, check. And please, no this "any IPS display is like this", because they are lot of IPS displays that maybe turn gray-ish in darkness and glow at angle - but at least *uniformly*.
You're right. As people that have OCD. Everything must look minimalist, functioning, & perfect. And LG have this (the design). The only thing that LG dint' have, they sux AMD D instead of Geforce D. :/
Can I reach 100Hz (OC) with a single GTX 1080 on Asus ROG PG348Q with ''very high'' or maximum details/resolution ? For example, how many FPS can I reach playing with GTA V REDUX with high ''details'' ? PS How much distant I have to stay from the monitor to watch it well? Table depth? 80cm, it's enough? (considering its base obviously)
I'm still thinking of these two.Asus's design is quite ugly to be honest, the light thing is terrible. Acer looks really pretty and modern not the ASUS one. But ASUS's Screen is better?
I agree the Asus is a little over the top for my liking. But it was on sale so I just ordered one. But I also ordered an Ergotech Freedom Arm from Massdrop so I won't be using that gaudy stand with light. Problem solved for me.
They have exactly the same panels, its all pretty much in design. I went with Acer after looking at Asus for long time, but the design of Asus is kinda....ugly to me.
It's not entirely YMMV. Sure there might be enough variance in some areas of IQ across different samples that the difference is negligible when averaged out, but the colour temperature difference here is large enough to suggest a trend.
So you've had multiple X34As and 348Qs? Looking at various reviews on diff sites of either you get varying results out of the box. Then you read forums and some get real bad gamma on the 348Q and theres no ability to adjust gamma on the monitor so ICC/Nvcpl is required.
Different sites use different test equipment so it's hard to compare results exactly. However Hardware.info, for instance, uses the same colorimeter as me and got near identical results for this and the PG348Q. Meanwhile TFTCentral uses completely different test software and hardware and got very different results -- bizarrely different, in fact. So much so I wonder if there has been a firmware change or something (I shall investigate further). Either way, the nature of manufacturing variance is such that it doesn't tend to affect fundamental colour reproduction qualities but rather things like dead pixels and backlight bleed. As such I'd be suprised if there was that much variation in colour temperature - 500K is a big difference.
Doesn't your fancy keyboard already have lightning options? I know my corsair k95 rgb has separate lightning for each individual key. That said, I use it with lights off as I can't stand rgb lights on my hardware.

Where the f do we even buy this panel, all I ever see online is the original x34
Really depends on the game, tested bf1 on ultra and got around 30fps with the x34a and zotac 1080. In most games though you can get quite nice fps on high and ultra settings. but not the newest and most gpu intensive games because of the insane pixel amount i mean it is 3440 x 1440.
+Benjamin sides Just get a 1080. Later down the road if you want to upgrade instead of buying a theoretically gtx 1180 you can buy another 1080 for sli for better performance. (980 sli is better than 1080)
Thing is, AMD are for the budget gamers... if you can afford these types of monitors you probably have a GTX1080 or better with a (recent.. 6700 or better) Intel i7.
The X34 has a far cooler stand, the stand on the Asus looks tacky with that gold colour plastic bit. The X34 feels like its aimed at a more mature audience and the Asus at teenagers.
Ill be getting the Asus, simply because i hate glossy plastic, who ever invented it, should be shot, it collects dust like a motherfucker, and also i wont be wasting half my desk space with either of their shitty stands, ill be using a Desk mounted arm for them, it saves so much space, and like most people have pointed out, the panels are the same in both monitors, so it really comes down to the little things, and from what i can see things like the menus are pretty shit on the Acer, also where i live, there is money to save on the Asus monitor :)
asus wins by miles acer cheap look and bad quality sux not to talk abaut the bottons the way it works on acer stink dont waste your money on the acer just saying
Glossy plastic should be made illegal.
Great review by the way! Why so few subscribers?! I'm subscribing 😊
Haha, I'm with you there! Still a new channel so slowly building subs. :)
Yup :P
They have a new version of it without it - and 100hz out of the box-code name X34p!
sistematic1 Thanks, I didn't know that. I've heard it's also got 'swivel' built into the stand too.
It's not out yet and Acer can't confirm a release date.Supposedly Q4 '16.We'll see.
How can you not have thousands of subscribers with such high qulity content?
voyy cause there is literally hundreds who hit good video audio quality today and you get lost in the mix sadly. Then UA-cam pushes the big channels as it’s ad revenue for them. It’s very easy to make quality content with ease. Also analytics show quantity over quality. The hard part is willingness to have no life for 3-5 years and do UA-cam 7 days a week
Well done review very professional :)
Here here.
have a x34a sind release. ... around 3/4 year with no issues.
btw. both have the same panel.
some Hardware site checked that.
Relatively speaking they both have quite a lot of bleeding compared to my previous Asus PG279Q, which almost had none.
thanks for your input. ima try and go balls in the walls with these monitors. im just choosing which of them to buy... lol.
In my country the ASUS is 100-140$ dollars cheaper than the Acer now, so to me it's a nobrainer now. Before the Acer was the cheaper model.
Carsten Nilsson Lol the Asus costs $400 more where I live.
One thing you didn't saw is that the pg348Q does have cable-management, the 2 grey clips you pop off for mounting the stand can be used to put cables to the back ;)
I prefer the Asus myself. probably gonna get one next month or so...
***** Nah, not yet. Got an Asus GTX 1080 first. Next one will bet this one :P
Just ordered mine :D GTX 1080 was last month. Happy gaming ! :p
I think I will go for the Acer Predator x34. In my country X34 is $150 Cheaper than the ASUS, just need few calibration.
This is nice comparison haha , I actually just made the Asus PG348Q as my first ever monitor review. Keep it up :)
I have pg348q and backlight bleed is horrible for that price its unacceptable.
Fuck backlight bleed its horrible that they are even n the market :D i bought x34 it is unaccaptable
i just got the pg348q on amazon for 768 dollars (used but not really, the only difference between the new and used one would have been the box would have not been opened.) I gotta say, even though this monitor has been out a while it is still just amazing, and for 768 dollars, you really arent gonna get too much better.
Wonderful video as per usual. How do you not have more subs?
Thanks ever so much. Cause I've only been doing this a short while, I guess. :)
I know the feels I only just started about a year back just hit the 200 Sub mark a few weeks ago.
+TechyTalk i likes this video it was very informative and you have way to many subs. You make Hardwarecannucks-style videos but have that less? Maybe try to get to Ed's Setup Wars youtuber edition or so.
as usual, great review!
P.S. you sound alot like James Yorkston in his song 'woozy with cider' (2007) lol...
Thanks! I don't know who James Yorkston is but anything associated with wooziness and cider gets my vote.
The website recommends a 980+ though for a smooth experience.
i notice more are saying the asus is better than acer.
moseyo tam Running a 1080 on it months later. Still love it. No regrets.
Sir Stiv
glad to know you got a good one. im currently gaming on 1080p 24inch 60hz. ima try to go balls in the wall and buy a 34ultrawide. now, its just a matter of checking be it a asus, samsung, acer, lg, etc.... thanks for your input.

i don't know what one to buy, ugh the struggle lol
subbed. great videos!
I'm now subed! Love the review...now when will they release either in Freesync?Lol...if ever.
Thanks. I'm not (yet) a PC gamer but after watching your review of the AOC U3477PQU the input lag issue put me off so I thought I'd browse your UA-cam channel. Best review I've seen so far. I have read that Acer comes with 60hz you need to overclock to 100... the overclocking is just going into the menu and boosting it? or do you need to flash firmware or some weird stuff like you for video cards?
It's as simple as going into the monitor menu and setting it at 100 hz and going into nvidia control panel and setting the refresh rate to 100. ezpz
Nice review. Much more concise and effective editing than the ASUS review 😊
I my humble opinion I choose the X34 first, but when discovered the PG348Q I choose it personally I like Asus products more but both of them are great monitors it all comes down to personal preference in this one.

I'm still torn between the two! I've just invested 5k in a behemoth system and need the 4k ultra wide cherry on the top but which one :( lol
well neither of these monitors is 4k.... they're both 1440p rather than 2160p
HobboTube as in up upscaled 4k not true 4k?
as in the monitor is only capable of 1440 horizontal lines whereas 4k has 2160 horizontal lines. Whether any normal person would notice the difference is up for debate but if you're looking for a 4k monitor then this isn't it. So it could upscale to 1440p.
4K on a ultrawide? You should be torn a little longer and do some research..
lol who would put a 1k+ monitor at the edge of the desk... Btw Great review but ill probably wait for the Predator X34P
I'm waiting with you. :3 x34p and 980 Ti SLI for Christmas! Yeah!
its been delayed to late 2017
John Doe T_T
Just ordered the pg348q no more waiting for me
John Doe Nice monitor. But it's 5 ms, the Acer x34p is 4ms. And more curved. :3
The Acer "A" model is much more curved than the Asus pg348, worth to mention. Personally i would pick the Asus, cause i cant stand the acer brand(they made sooooo much crap in the past)
Like Hyundai made shitty cars in the past, but it's not the same game today... it's called growth :)
hyundai is still shitty
QuantuMlapZiz I've got the X34 and have no issues, both Acer and Asus IPS panels are same with different design..
Frank Beaulieu not the same....
QuantuMlapZiz well from the issues both had the same...even QC both are none better than each other...:)
as someone who has both i must admit, acer predator x34a is better.
Bravo man great review....Still toren between both these monitors. Have a Dell U2711, awesome monitor but seeking more real estate so these 2 are on the cards although I heard acer are bringing out a newer version of the predator soon is this correct?
also the XR342CK has hdmi 2.0 & 2.1

X34P is out now.
gotta hate the glossy plastic, once it gets dust on and you clean it .. there are scratches everywhere just like on the PS4 rofl.
what is it like to watch 1080p movie on that ?
What about the Acer z35p vs ASUS PG348Q, which is better?

wait a minute , the specs say its only 60 hz and you claim 100 hz ?
Because you can easily put it to 100 with a few buttons so.....
overclocked
Are you going to review the x34p when it comes out?
I certainly plan to. Can't guarantee exactly when I'll be able to get hold of when, though.
Is it me or predator has a bit bigger screen??
I would gladly gives up the curved display to save a little, if I could find such a display. is there a 34" ultrawide G-sync 100Hz display that isn't curved?
Oh well, bit the bullit and ordered the Asus as it was on sale. See what you made me do! lol...

is there any difference between 100hz and 144hz? i wanna buy an ultrawide, currently holding up and waiting for the 200hz ones hitting maybe soon but my patience runs dry and thinking of buying the 348q asus, at 100. would there be any difference in terms of fps visibile to the human eye? i ve been playing bf1 mostly and that runs very good at 60-80 but it can go up to 120 sometimes...i think that 100hz is more than enough for any game to run smooth. i don t see the big fuss for going more than that. but maybe there is, i never tried it. i would give it a chance tho'. what do you guys think? i'm talking about strictly fps now. i would pay a couple hundred bucks more for that HDR, quantum dot if it makes a significant difference in visuals. i'm only buying a monitor once every 5 years so fuck it, YOLO.
you made a poor decision on showing a movie to showcase how bad/good the BLB is,you should have found a really rich dark movie, like a space movie orsomething like that. The same goes for your pg348q review. But you are far better reviewer of the monitor that any other I watched on youtube.
Horrible non-uniform light bleed and some clouding, check. And please, no this "any IPS display is like this", because they are lot of IPS displays that maybe turn gray-ish in darkness and glow at angle - but at least *uniformly*.
do the new ones come with the swivel?
Acer 4 ms vs Asus 5 ms response time
"gaudy light" how much did acer pay you to say that?
Don't like the design of either of them. Does anyone know whether LG are soon to offer something with similar grunt?? ie Gsync and 100+ Hz
Daniel Kemeys sorry, forgot to ask you opinion shit face
Trust me butty, I can spell.
Daniel Kemeys facepalm
You're right. As people that have OCD. Everything must look minimalist, functioning, & perfect. And LG have this (the design).
The only thing that LG dint' have, they sux AMD D instead of Geforce D. :/
idk,Asus is the best benchmark for me,u will always get the best image quality on Asus, but Acer is better just about mading lap tops.. my opinion
can u please give me a link to this wallpaper
Can I reach 100Hz (OC) with a single GTX 1080 on Asus ROG PG348Q with ''very high'' or maximum details/resolution ?
For example, how many FPS can I reach playing with GTA V REDUX with high ''details'' ?
PS How much distant I have to stay from the monitor to watch it well?
Table depth? 80cm, it's enough? (considering its base obviously)
Pensiero Differente no. U can only run minecraft in -9 fps
So what did you buy at the end?
I bought the ASUS one, it's nice but I am still hating the light thing lol. Like I never turned it on.
+helen624 i got Acer luckly the backlight bleed is almost non existant. that was my biggest fear lol.
How do you get these man?
You cant really say "Asus has slightly better IQ out of the box" when thats entirely: YMMV because each monitor is unique, out of the box.
Who the fuck would want flashing LED's on the bottom of their monitor?
to lit up the keyboard while gaming, duh!!! (see, you turn off the lights of your room but cant see now the keyboard)
Who cares looks badass either way
Doesn't your fancy keyboard already have lightning options? I know my corsair k95 rgb has separate lightning for each individual key. That said, I use it with lights off as I can't stand rgb lights on my hardware.
Where the f do we even buy this panel, all I ever see online is the original x34
It's not easy to find here in Thailand not one store has the G-Sync model even after it been on the market for over 12 months.
The acer Predator have a better stand but the Asus is a better all around product !
GTG response time?
5ms
would a 1080 run games smooth on these monitors?
Really depends on the game, tested bf1 on ultra and got around 30fps with the x34a and zotac 1080. In most games though you can get quite nice fps on high and ultra settings. but not the newest and most gpu intensive games because of the insane pixel amount i mean it is 3440 x 1440.
+robinorg1 Wtf? 30 fps? With a zotac? What? That makes no sense. Even in 1440p on an ultrawide it should reach an avg of 60+ fps
Don't know if go 1080 hybrid or 1070 sli
+Benjamin sides Just get a 1080. Later down the road if you want to upgrade instead of buying a theoretically gtx 1180 you can buy another 1080 for sli for better performance. (980 sli is better than 1080)
Or wait for the 1080 ti
The asus is nicer and it has far easier controls
how is it nicer?
+robinorg1 i personally prefer the look of the asus version.
I bought the asus it's a lovely looking object. IMO.
i see, i just think the lighting effects are alot better on the x34 and the "stand" is sharper and cleaner. but i guess thats debatable.
have you seen one IRL? they've got a gorgeous finish on the back as well.
The asus looks like a spaceship, just keep it simple folks..
so asus or acer fuukk i'm confused....
I wish the x34a was without G-sync. I don't care for what Nvidia is doing with their shit compared to AMD and it's way too overpriced.
Thing is, AMD are for the budget gamers... if you can afford these types of monitors you probably have a GTX1080 or better with a (recent.. 6700 or better) Intel i7.
It can beat asus in terms of backfuckinglight bleeding
both monitor sucks :D
Never.. Asus PG348 better
Asus design is more unique Acer is just sleek like every other screen
ASUS > ACER
asus wins by miles acer cheap look and bad quality sux not to talk abaut the bottons the way it works on acer stink dont waste your money on the acer just saying
