The description of how going from 16:9 to 21:9 is underwhelming, but going the opposite direction is a huge difference is how I felt getting a high refresh rate monitor. At first 144hz felt no better than 60, until I tried going back to 60.

21:9 is criminally underrated. I swapped to a 1440 144hz 34" a few years ago and I can't go back. Such a nice experience, if you have a pc to push it properly of course. It's not easy to run in some modern titles.

    • @i4y

Yup, I went from a 27" 144Hz to a 35" 100Hz and that loss of Hz in almost all games won't bother me nearly as much as the loss in screen real estate. I do think the frame sync on the ultrawide really helped smooth things out.

i dunno, i went with a 16:9 with the specs you listed. still get a lot of that periphery feel, but it plays nicer with text and movies and such. it's only on some fps'es where my housemate's ultrawide is more enjoyable.

A GTX 1060 handled 3440 x 1440 very well back in 2016-2017 titles imo. Battlefront, The Witcher 3, Mass Effect Andromeda, ESO, DOOM 2016, Rise of the Tomb Raider were graphically demanding games that could run well in the 50-60 fps margin with medium to high settings.

A lot of games let you adjust the HUD area so stuff like the minimap doesn't get pushed into your peripheral vision. I tend to push the hud to be roughly where it would be in 16:9, which also allows me to crop the capture in OBS if I want to stream or record in 16:9 while actually playing in 21:9

That's a really good point! Also, any games that just plain don't support that, there's the option to run them in a 16:9 resolution then set the resolution scaling to "No scaling" & "Perform Scaling on GPU" in Nvidia Control Panel (I'm sure there's a similar option for AMD cards, I just don't have experience with AMD), so you get black bars on the left and right of the monitor.

For me the extra width par nice with a 1000r curve, i finetune the fov ingame so that when im in the sweetspot my peripheral vision feeds info from the flanks while the larger 34" makes 1440 a little bigger image so it counters the increased fov shrinking the centre of the image. The curves compensate for the distortion on the sides for the peripheral view :)
if you spend a few hours fiddling with this it makes the world of difference for fpv and racing games. In the races u now see a car if it come up on your sides, its quite cool?
to get this effect just 10 years ago u had to have minimum 3 monitors. And finding models that matched and had small bezels was a HARD game

Some games have Ultrawide options in their settings that can move HUD elements further in. Sometimes this happens automatically, other times you have to enable them. Still other times, and most of the time, really, you just get stuff moved off to the periphery. Mileage may vary depending on the game.

Backlight flashing, overshoting and blury motion is VA panel's fault. When I upgraded from the old LG IPS 1080p ultrawide to 1440p 34" VA, I instantly disliked it for the same reasons. There was a ton of ghosting, black colors were getting smushed, blurry movement etc. But as luck would have it, the monitor had a cluster of dead pixels, so I was able to return it and get IPS 1440p 34" ultrawide and all of the issues were gone. Yes, IPS does have it issues like glow, but its not nowhere near as annoying as having multiple VA problems.

@@DawidDoesTechStuff Most gaming VA panels are terrible when it comes to response times, AKA blurry/ghosting. For low-end to mid-range displays you want to go with IPS or TN. I say MOST though, high end Samsung has the best of both worlds, the contrast of a VA and the response times close to TN. My Odyssey G7 is amazing. The new Neo G7 and Neo G9s are even better apparently. The G9 range is Ultrawide if your interested. They are very expensive though. I completely agree with this video: when I first upgraded from a flat 27" 1080p to a 34" flat 1440p ultrawide, it was a little bit overwhelming but you do adapt to it very quickly. Every game was such a pleasant experience. Now having jumped from 34" flat ultrawide to a Samsung G9 49" curved ultrawide was mind blowing and pretty overwhelming! (especially sitting 2-3 ft from it)
League of legends took awhile to get used to which then becomes really awesome (and yes - you do turn your head from side to side just to see the mini map & read chat). Flying, racing, survival simulators such as Forza, Stranded Deep, The Forest and Flight Simulator are just a sight to behold and experience. You will have the biggest smile during the immersion. Finally, farming sims and 2D platformers are amazing to see on ultrawide. The extra vision of the environment is crazy cool and helps with how you envision your farm or what resources are around you. In Terraria you can see so far on either side to plan what you want to do next or see something hostile approaching you with time to react.
Afterwards, I have tried to game on a 32" 1080p monitor on another system and just couldn't do it. The realization of being spoiled by having the extra real estate and the immersion provided by the aggressive curvature hit me pretty quick. I can't go back to 16:9 for gaming. All I have to say is get immersed & lost in your games and have fun.

    • @Sunlight91

I love my ultrawide for simulators as well and management games like Transport Fever. They have important HUD elements you want to see, but also good graphics. On a 16:9 the HUD covers up too much of the screen. On 21:9 you have a full 16:9 view of the game with important HUD stats on the edges.

Honestly, 16:9 is fine. You just have to buy a big enough monitor to cover the same width as an ultrawide. Then you get the benefit of having a "wide" screen, but also get the height and a normal aspect ratio for video content. And at 4k res 42", you won't be seeing pixels at normal viewing distances. And as for 21:9 film content, it's overated. Have a monitor with mini-led, and you won't even notice the letterboxing in the dark.

Yeah that too. If I'm feeling really lazy I can lean back, loaf about, and with getting a significantly bigger monitor I feel like being able to use it as a TV to watch stuff with company starts being a consideration. Not sold on curved yet. Am pretty torn about ultrawide though. Like, I can literally see shit to the sides of my vision that's not my screen, and 24" is this really weird zone where the monitor is small enough I can still see not-monitor stuff everywhere, but too big for me to sit with my face right up next to it to fill my vision like I did with smaller displays. Would maybe 32" be big enough to fill up my periphery?

@@SLEEPYDOGINU uh, the whole poiint of me using it is because I sit literally less than a meter away from my screen, usually with my face pressed only 12 inches away if I can help it to increase the immersion. I guess the downside is these videos for 1080p I download look like ass even at 1440p.
Sorry I should've clarified that, I sit right in front of my computer screen and don't have any use for a TV at all. I walked by a curved ultra-wide at a computer store playing Metroid Prime Remastered and within seconds was sucked into the game. It was the Corsair Xeneon Flex 45-inch and I found it on online on sale for $500 off bringing the total down to $1,500.
Pretty pricey but worth it for me. The monitor I got actually addresses the issue in the video of it being curved and not usable for programs that require a more flat screen since as the "Flex" in the name suggests, the monitor is flexible and you can bend it. It has retractable handles on the side that you can pull towards yourself to make it curved and push it away to make it flat again.

I like that you went back to a 16:9 to see how you felt going away from the 21:9. It's always easy to feel like it's minimal improvement when upgrading but, as the saying goes, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone." A few months ago I upgraded from a 1080p TV from 2011 to a 4k TV with HDR. I kinda noticed the upgrade and appreciated it, but I didn't feel it was a game changer. Then a few weeks later I decided to get a secondary display. I got a 1440p standard ratio display that didn't have HDR and I realized that I was already spoiled by 4k HDR. I had to return the 1440p display, even though it was still technically better than the last TV I had played on for 10 years it felt like a big downgrade compared to the 4k.
However, your complaint about now seeing your room behind the monitor in your peripheral seems like a non-issue to me lol. To me that just says that your standard display is too small. My 4k is a 55" and it mostly fills up my vision from where I sit, about an arm and a half length away. So even if you get an ultrawide as wide as my TV, now you're missing the vertical part and can see beyond the display that way. And I can usually just scale my UI to free up more visual space in most games. And the ones I can't aren't usually the kind where it matters, anyways.

They both have a really good IPS matrix with great color accuracy, contrast and backlighting and they don't tire my eyes out after long sessions of working, drawing, reading or gaming. I am so used to 21:9 now that I can say that once you go ultrawide you can't go back to 16:9 or the rest. :D Things are much more immersive and your workspace is much easier to organize on the extra width. Trying to put multiple programs on a single large screen gives me flashbacks to the war days of having limited space (one not large monitor) and trying to find some crazy arrangement of all the windows that worked. 21:9 user for a couple years now. A couple things to add I feel are overlooked:
1-You can cut down the resolution to 16:9 if absolutely necessary for a game, just run black bars on the side. Can be done through software or on some monitors' input menu. It is an extra step and hassle, but it does allow you the option.
2-Media consumption on 21:9 is glorious. Most modern movies are shot in 2.39:1 which is very close to 21:9, and when using apps like Netflix or HBOMax, they will fill out the entire screen for full cinematic picture (no annoying black bars like a 16:9).

I upgraded from a 24inch monitor to a 34inch ultra wide monitor earlier this year because I work from home and didn't want to have a dual monitor setup at home. Definitely is better for productivity and gaming in my opinion. The curved screen may seem awkward at first but it not only makes gaming feel more immersive but it also allows you to sit closer to the screen. A flat 34inch monitor would require you to sit further away to see the whole screen. The versatility of an ultra is good too because you can also change the screen to run at 16:9 resolutions if you want to for some reason. You can either leave the black bars on the sides or stretch the resolutions out across the screen. The main downside I have experienced is the need to upgrade my graphics card since I went from gaming at 1920x1080 to 3440x1440. 1440 ultra wide is about 25% more pixels than 1440 so you need a fairly powerful graphics card to run games at good frame rates. You can usually see 10-20 less fps at 1440 ultra wide compared to 1440. I don't see myself ever going back to 16:9 gaming now.

I had one for a year. It literally used to give me motion sickness. I also hated the black bars on some games and lack of support in some also. Sold it. I will never have another.

I love ultrawide monitors, not sure how I never owned one before 2019.
    1. It helps me with work, 2 monitors in one, I code on one side and preview on the other.
    2. Most movies that I watch are in ultrawide, they look great!
    3. Most games that I play support ultrawide and they look amazing!
    4. For competitive games and some single player games that don't support ultrawide, it just has black bars on the sides and why would they ever bother? Better than the distracting wall behind.
    I own an Alienware 3418dw, 34 inch with 120fps.
In the future, I would want a 144+ hz one with higher res than now. The res is more important.
With a 3090, one can do 144+ fps easily on most games at 3440x1440, at least the competitive ones.
But for single player experience, where one doesn't need more than 60-100 FPS, I would love to have a 6000x2560 monitor in 34 inch size.

My biggest issuse with gaming on an ultrawide is a lot of older games don't have ultrawide support so having something like flawless widescreen is a must. I will never go back though, I love my ultrawide :D

Just wanna comment on the MOBA aspect. I’ve been on 21:9 for about 2 years now and by far my most heavily played game is LoL.
It was definitely a tricky adjustment to go from 16:9 to 21:9 but after honestly going back to 16:9 is really tough. While the mini map is a bit further out, it’s never too bad by any stretch. And LoL specific, the screen actually shows you more map so you can get a larger view of what’s happening.
I’d say the most difficult part is getting used to the unlocked camera and how far you have to swipe your mouse comparatively to the 16:9 but anyone out there who’s unsure of playing League on 21:9, I do it plenty and I personally love it!

Jumping from 16:9 to 21:9 wasn't really surprise me back then, i'm just feels like "a wider horizontal monitor but most of content is centered", i can go back to 16:9 at any time and feel no difference, except for watching movies with 21:9 aspect ratio.
But, jumping from 60hz display towards 144hz display really blows my mind how smooth everything is, it just like jumping from old HDD to an SSD for the first time.

When I switched to UW1440p after years of waiting, it was everything I imagined.... at first. But after a few weeks, the novelty of a new kind of display was gone as I got used to it. And like David, I never want to go back. My old 16:9 1440p monitor is just now a 2nd screen in portrait mode.

I used to use stacked ultrawides haha, great for music making, having gone back to one ultrawide and a normal monitor hurts still a little :) But yeah it's very hard to go back to normal if even able to..

I have been using the crappy-est 1440p ultrawide for a few years now and I must say that it's probably the best pc upgrade I've ever made. You eventually get used to everything that's horizontal beeing curved and I'm more than happy to forgive the VA-flickering. I'd love to replace it with something better, but everything is either basically identical or triple the price.
I doubt that Dell is willing to send you anything, but maybe it's worth a shot to ask for the 34 inch qd-oled screen, which is probably the best pc monitor for gaming.

    Great video as always.
We have had our Samsung C49RG QLED 32:9 for 3 years and it has been the best investment in a screen.
In games like AOE4 we just play in the 16:9 window and can open Discord and Twitch next to it.
But the screen is great for editing our videos.

the worst thing or best thing about ultrawide is definitely native ultrawide support. Some companies refuse to support it, like many Japanese game devs, but developers that do support it really give ultrawide users a real treat.
It's certainly a lot better than like the 2016 days when it wasn't common to have native ultrawide support. I just wish it was really implemented by more game devs

21:9 is really good for certain games like racing games or games where the FOV is a crucial need and if you do editing and such then ultrawide is a must have.

i used one for 5 years. no regrets.
now i'm back on 16:9. it was hard to adapt back at first, took me a few weeks, but i'm okay now. it's worth it for the oledness of it.
also i could just use a ultrawide resolution in this screen if i wanted. black bars that are actually black don't bother me much, and i could get a larger ultrawide picture out of this 48" lg c1 than i had with my old 34" uw

    VESA
Curve have big plus, colors should not get impacted, because on flat one, colors from edge will pass through front layer at different angle that one's in front of you, so it will affect colors

After so many years using them i think the brain adapts so i have no problems playing even mobas on them

About a year ago I moved to 5120*1440 Ultrawide screen. It is essentially two 27" wide screen next to each other. It has a massive 1000R curve and it was a big adjustment. So much so that I was going to send it back, I thought I just wasted a truck load of money but now...you can't get away from this beast. I still have my ASUS 3440-1440 as well but it hardly gets any use these days. I only hook it up for a few games that completely lose their minds when you use 5120*1440.
If you get the opportunity, give it a go!

I've been using ultrawides for almost 5 years now and whenever I have to use a normal 16:9 monitor at work or at friend's place I really miss my ultrawide. I use my monitor for everything, coding, video editing, gaming, web browsing, watching movies. And it is really great for all of that except for movies and videos that aren't in the 21:9 aspect ratio. Most movies are and most youtube videos aren't. But you really get used to it very quickly.

I recently went ultrawide for office work from a 3 monitor set-up (including laptop display). I discovered that unless you use a window manager utility like FancyZones and using the layout shortcuts, it would have been better using a 27 inch monitor and keep the laptop screen open, at least from how I do my work. There's too many unused spaces when opening two documents side-by-side, it's really distracting when looking from one document to the other. But with shortcuts, I can easily swap from a 3-column screen to 2-column one where one column occupies 2/3s of the screen (good for opening Word and a lengthy Excel file at the same time).

I have two Gigabyte G32QC curved 32" displays side by side. I've been gaming on them for almost 2 years and have been happy with them.
I seem to recall that they took a little getting used to. No Man's Sky was great on them.
