  • Mike's VLOG: Hello folks and welcome to the first episode of Mike’s Vlog. This episode is a mix of video shorts mostly with the hopes of offering you a window into our operation. My story about Honey Bees Unlimited is not always directly about beekeeping so you will see many different jobs and projects we are working on around our headquarters and on our equipment as commercial beekeepers. One of the main characters in my story is Uncle Marty who will be working on whatever needs to be done on a daily basis so he will help tell my story as we work together.
In this episode you will see a bit about loading a semi truck of bees, some queen grafting, a clip about spring splits, digging a pond for the bees, dirt work for our on site campground and facility access, fish release for some after hours fun, bee transfer to nucs, pallet repair and painting, road work, first hot lunch at HQ, mite testing and trailer repair.
I hope you find my story and my work as interesting and satisfying as I do and I look forward to bringing you into our world of beekeeping and beyond at HBU.

Hey Mike, at 3:45 mins. "we had something interesting happen" and "we don't know why" regarding the colors of the wax around your queen cells. The darker queen cells were made from collected wax (reused) from the brood combs because they either had no nectar or sugar syrup enough to make new wax to build the queen cells themselves. Or the cell builder had old nurse bees. The lighter queen cells are made from new wax they generated from their wax glands when they had enough nectar or syrup to generate wax. Or they had younger bees. If you make certain they always have, and don't run out of 1:1 sugar syrup days before and after you place the grafted cells in, it will stimulate their wax glands and the wax around the q cells will be light, abundant and larger. You will notice the dark queen cells are also smaller cells because of this. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for sharing this for all to learn from. Love your first blog!

Karen, Thank you so much for watching my first episode and I am so happy you enjoyed it. I really appreciate you taking the time to create such a great response to our observation and enjoyed your insight. I will give you some more info .
We do feed each of our starters 1:1 and we make sure they don't run out during the cell building window which leads me to believe that the nurse bee's age is the variable responsible. This is really interesting to me and reiterates the conversations we have about the absolute critical need for good quality nurse bees in this process, in our mating yard and in the colonies that we introduce cells/queens into for their success. This is our first year grafting and I am amazed at how hungry this process is for nurse bees, brood, food and the effort is takes is a fun challenge. I am really glad you pointed out the darkness of the other cells from that day, that was our second to the last grafting we did our resources were to pull from were thinner for this and the next grafts. Oddly enough the same hive produced the same light colored cells the next round as well and I think you are correct as to why! Mike
