  • Mike Barber's Commercial Beekeeping VLOG: Been a very busy few weeks at Honey Bees Unlimited. In this episode you will see more sites from the road as we cover the miles bringing home the last of the bees and stacking them deep at HQ. Hard year for the bees this season with the late summer drought with temps well into the 100's for over a month plus the mite explosion left us with some thin bees and some hard questions to answer as we weigh our commitment to send bees to pollinate the almonds. Success and disappointment are the two sides of the coin we flip in our efforts as commercial beekeepers so please join us for yet another coin toss move forward and make it happen!

It was a difficult season for the bees in a lot of areas, some spots rocked and in some cases a short distance away they didn't.
I'll be interested on seeing the merging video.
🤢Oh that would smell, I think beekeepers have the🥰best offices. I use the same style of over time bucket feeders, I really like how they allow you to simulate a light flow.
Thanks for sharing your time, Blessed Days...

Every year I always say that next year will 🐝 better. It always has been, just not in the way I hoped or imagined. You are absolutely correct in my opinion that the area feeders do simulate a flow and I think they therefore stimulate a response better than in hive feeders. The negative for us is that the strongest colonies get the most feed. Thx for watching, cheers to and your bees this season! - Mike

Man, I bet it was tough on yall up there this summer. It turned to the Sahara once that high pressure set in. Good video thanks for sharing.

Thx much for your support, you are greatly appreciated! What part of the Lone Star State are you running bees? It was tough up here for sure in parts of our area and in other parts we had bit of rain throughout the season and did pretty decent. So much better than last year’s drought. - Mike

Wharton so south of houston. We had good rain early on but I dont think we got a drop for about three months june-august. The golden rod was ok once we started getting rain so that helped me not have to supplemental feed so much. Ive got ag yards too its hard to get to them all and do proper oav. Ive decided next july Im going to just put apivar strips in the ag yards with the hopes they make it til I can make a round of oav in september/october.@@honeybeesunlimited

Whole world of difference down your way and lots of things are the same. The ag yards definitely keep running the wheels off and I agree about the mite treatments. I think the prolonged nice weather seems to burn up a lot of bees and resources between fall and spring unlike some regions were the bees cluster up and stay. Best to you and your bees.@@TexasKielerBees

What was the long tubular black thing in the bottom of the hive that had the larva in the pollen patty?
Great video..our bees are just starting the season..the maples are just popping out! We’re in North Florida!

The long tubular black thingy is an ingenious swinging entrance reducer That I cannot take credit for or claim that I immediately understood its purpose. I am a little bit envious that your season is already getting started. Cheers to you and your bees!

Don’t let employees make decision. Especially on something subjective like frames of bees. No gray area. Perhaps next time try to have them equalize hives on a pallet. Or knock everything down to equalized singles and come back when the time is right with seconds that have organized frames.

Ultimately the responsibility rest on our shoulders and I think you hit on the nail on the head with the word subjectivity. We get heads down and in a hurry flipping frames and boxes with assumptions being made that we remain on the same page and don’t experience mission creep even as our target moves. Our crew is great and they have all earned my deepest respect and hammer at it day after. Thank you for your insight and suggestions! - Mike
