  • Every time I upload a video, I get a dozen comments and messages asking, "When are you going to add the FLOW frames?"
I hope this video explains why they're not on yet and why they probably won't be on this season. Have patience! We'll get there eventually.

It's not about the honey, a hobby beekeeper can go buy pure honey a hundred times cheaper than they can produce it when you count the equipment and time involved. Most of us do it because we love the bees.
Something to consider while you get excited about trying to keep a lot of bees and make a lot of splits. You've got way too much grass and way too little bee forage from what I've seen from your drone footage over the last few years. I'd take some of that worthless grass (since you don't have any livestock to graze it) and plant a few stages of bee forage for those bees to work. Once you get past early spring, you don't have much around there for them to work on. I'd look at clovers, sanfoin, buckwheat and sunflowers if I were going to try to increase bee stocks there. That stuff is also great for all sorts of wildlife and other pollinators. That grass is useless and you just have to keep it mowed.
Part of the problem with bees now is a gross lack of forage. Many plants provide pollen but little to no nectar and I suspect that's the case there with all the timber you have around. The lack of forage makes them try to work gardens and there are generally pesticides aplenty in gardens. Syrup...I don't think has enough nutritional value to compare with nectar so while it makes a decent life support tool, you'd be better off with some heavy forage around you. Plant it in stages so it covers the entire forage season. Look at warm season and cool season plants to make it a consistent flow. This is what I'd consider a logical "next stage" of your bee keeping growth" along with learning how to make your increases. I wouldn't rely on just whatever natural forage they can eek out unless there's something significant in the area I am not aware of.

My bees are urban. The trees and weeds in people's yards, the railroad tracks, prairie restoration plots, factory yards and back lots etc are where my bees get their feed. Consider that if you draw a circle with a radius of 3 miles...then do the math and calculate the area is vast. My bees produce more honey than the rural beekeepers in this area. Why? More diversity in forage. It does feel good to plant some bee flowers. I have but really only on a small scale. Will start 1000 sq feet of buckwheat in June. Vino look for a tiller on Craigslist. We got a troy bilt econo horse for $300. Built like a tank.

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 6 років тому +3

There are usually a lot more forage species out there than we think about or see, no doubt. Especially in urban areas there are usually quite a few. There are a lot of people out there though in very poor forage areas that expect the honey bees to be able to magically make honey off of very little though and a lot of areas where there are not many nectar producing plants at all. Even more that are extremely seasonal. More diversity means a better and more even nectar flow. I have some bees on native prairie here in KS and it's hard to beat.
Bees can forage up to three miles or so but it's hard on them and inefficient. The closer I can get mine to good forage, the better.
Vino has a tractor, he could probably also find a nice 3 pt tiller for cheap and make better use of his time.

I have to agree. Around the house, he can easily plant a flower garden filled with bachelor buttons, lavender, black eye Susans, witch hazel, Canterbury bells, angel trumpets, bluebells, foxglove, carpet of snow, tulips, daffodils, lilies, marigolds, asters, coneflowers, ... There are so many types of beautiful flowers he can plant around his house or in a flower garden that will start blooming in spring through fall. If he plants an herb garden then the bees will love sage, rosemary, thyme, and mint. Oh how do bees love mint and mint is a "weed" so it spreads like crazy. I know New England weather (I live here) and I know chocolate mint, apple mint, peppermint, spearmint, curly mint, lemon mint, pineapple mint all do well but peppermint and spearmint are the two that really take off well. I remember planting it one year and by the end of summer it was blooming and there were so many bees that I couldn't use my yard (I'm actually allergic to bees but love them still).

"It's Not About The Honey" I kind of suspected this from the beginning, not that I didn't think you could get any honey, just that beekeeping is a journey and a challenge, something you looked like you wanted to participate in. You keep taking us along for the ride and I will be there with you. Your bees and weather challenges are TOTALLY different to us here in South Africa which is of great interest to me. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hey man. I always stop my day when I see an notification you post. Got my bees! Have them for 1.5 weeks. Totally feeling the "its not about the honey." I'm solely focused on making the hive as LARGE as possible. (3 deeps by end of year) Hopefully they will survive winter, and I can plant my north east cherry trees for them to pollinate. Thanks for the videos. You're an inspiration.

I love your long-term planning, and your discussion about how you're growing, and why you're growing the way you are. 2nd year beekeeper here. We had three hives last year... all three died over the winter... too cold and not enough food. We got a new package this year and started again. Our hive this year has more aggressive/defensive bees... so we're getting to learn about that. I subscribed and am looking forward to your next videos.

I just started watching your videos. Although I’ve had bees for years I never took the time to really learn what it takes to be a beekeeper! I always kept a few hives and just replaced winter losses with packages as most of my time was dedicated to raising a family. I finally have the time to learn and have began making splits and I’m starting to think about raising some queens of my own next year. I never really went into this hobby for anything other than helping nature but the time has come where I would like to become more self sufficient without spending the normal $300.00-$500.00 a year with little to show for it. Your videos are great and I have learned so much and wanted to just say thanks!!

OkieRob, you're dead on point and I've tried to relate tht same thing. With the bees on hand now, I'd have done at least 2 walk-a-ways, and I'm in ND where cold is measured in degrees under zero F. 1 to 1 syrup and a pollen paddy or two gets those ladies working hard and MAKING Queens for us! We should be seeing no less than 10 good hives here by fall - STAY TUNED! :)

I am doing the same thing, raising bees and not harvesting honey. This is my sixth season and nearly all of the honey that I have harvested I gave away! Maybe at some point I will harvest and sell honey but now, as retirement approaches I feel as though I need to learn more about raising bees. In my fantasy world I would love to raise bees and help people get started. Keep it up! I find the rewards outweigh the disappointments.

I do beekeeping because of the same reason as You have done. The amount of honey is a ”good measurement” of success. That was what I learned from master-beekeeper (videos "The monk and the bees") brother Adam at Buckfast Abbey In England. I started out with two Flow Hive hives in 2016, but I didn't get any bees until midsummer 2017. In my region north of the university city of Umea we either keep blend-bees (”mongrels”) and many of us try to establish the ”Nordic bees ( ”Dark bees”) as the dominating breed, as I do. My first goal was to get the two first hives through the winter, which i did I got them through and my goals now changed in the same direction as yours did, with the difference that I somewhere along the line want to test the Flow frames. I now have added two full hives (with10 frames in the bottom).I use langstroh frames which is normal for more professional beekeepers which I am not, but FH "forced” me in that direction. In northern Sweden where I live the normal hives are usually what we call "low-normal" frames, which seem to be rather close to what is seem to be usual in Britain. My goal for next year (2019) is to try. to keep my four hives from this year and add one spit, so five full langstroh ten frame hives. Two of these hives are what I call Pagoda hives with a ten frame langstroh box in the botom and a FH American-Australian 8 frame-box on top of it. So can I get them through the winter without losses I will try at least one FH-box with FH-frames next summer. I am curious if I can do it here in he north of Sweden. If I have losses I will try to reach 5 hives any way and also try a FH-frame box. But 5 hives are h main goal. Just keeping bees and learning. I will probably never have more hive then 10 hives as I will probably only have one bee-yard, mostly as the woods surrounding my house. I don’t have a farm and no farmers at all in my village or not even close to my villge. I must thank You for your videos. Very interesting and You are a very sympatetic person, I wil soon have seen all your videos I have learnt a lot, especially abou the Vivaldi board. I tried something wtth the same idea, but the Vivaldi board seem to be the solution of many problems especially in the north of Sweden. I will absolutely keep an eye on your activiies and continue to learn. Thank You and good luck! greetings Christer Edling from northern Sweden

Even here in the colder parts where I live. I have my third nuc on order this spring (August) and am hoping to split in September October and get some resources built up maybe next autum I may have 4-5 hives ? Vino Farm, I hear you about, "Its not about the honey." If I had to sell the little amount I get, it would have to sell for $200.00 an oz. just to brake even. I just enjoy the challenge of working with the bees and watching them work. Getting them all through winter would be a big plus too. Glad to see you feeding that package, that will make a big difference with the speed of their build up. Remember when you split you won't have enough worker bees to bring in the resources for the nurse bees tending to the queen and keeping the brood fed and warm. Sense the nurse bees can't go out and gather food it's a good idea to feed them too. Good luck with your splits. Love the Vids.

LOL I went into and came out of this winter with nine hives... The year before I went in with 3 and out with three. I am now up to 32 hives and using 6 sections of castles. All have queens, just mated virgins or capped cells. I've also sold 5 nucs this year and a few queens.
Be careful when having thoughts of expansion - I had it all planned out and then the bees got involved! I'd planned well but am totally out of frames, wax foundation and hive bodies not to mention lids and bottom boards. Borrowing equipment this week from bee friends to tide me over til the new orders come in. I get honey but I fell in love with growing more bees two years ago!

Jim, thanks for all the adventures. I am one of the folks who learned a ton from binging your adventures, and those of others. A few hundred hours of youtube can provide quite an education... at least the theorycraft, practice, and the HUGE, HUGE bonus of learning from the mistakes of others, rather than having to repeat them yourself.
I started this year with 2 packages and a nuc, and hope to be up to 5 queenright colonies next week... (with luck!) and one mating nuc that is working on 4 more queen cells.

While it was the interest in the Flow Hive and how it worked that brought me to your channel it is your journey in Bee keeping that has kept me interested. Your videos have a lot of good information. I look forward to seeing more.

  • @VannDDay

Why not do both? Pick one hive for the flow frames and split the other two? You could likely still have 6 hives from the splits. I've watched all your videos and inspections and I think you could easily do the splits on the two hives and use the flow frames on the third. Makes for more interesting content on the channel and you can sell some of the rewards to recoup the cost of the package you bought this year.

I started beekeeping the same year you did - 2016. Therefore, this is also my third season. I had a rough go last winter, mainly due to it being an extremely cold Canadian winter where I live. I lost two of my hives, and was devastated. But, this time around, I am getting 5 more hives, and I am so excited to be continuing on this journey of beekeeping!
I have been so happy to be able to follow through your videos, and in a way, learn by your side!
I feel as if my idea of beekeeping is very similar to yours. I say this because when I began beekeeping, I thought it would be a great learning experience. I’m currently 20 years old, and I have learned so much about nature, the environment, weather, flowers, and so much more - all thanks to our cute little friends.
Truly an amazing thing you’re doing here, and I envy your setup! Great work, great videos.
Thank you so much for putting in all of this time and effort to bring us these videos.
    Fellow beekeeper,
    Ethan.

I too am in it for the bees. However I am lucky enough to have gotten to taste the fruits of their labor. Keep up the great work and the videos. You are a bit over one year ahead of me, so it's like we are learning the same things. I just wish I had more land so I could have more hives. Two days ago I started hive number 4 and may be over my limit. 😔 Now I don't what to do with those girls.

I like you have watched many other beekeepers on UA-cam. The ones that I have watched consistently pick a strong hive and use that one to do their splits from. I wouldn't think it be an issue to take a frame of nurse bees with capped brood from the other hives to give them a boost of numbers. Then you could put the flow frames on one of the hives. Another thing I did was made one of my supers into a hybrid. That way if one of my hives needed resources for the winter I could always pull those frames out and put them in the hive that needed it! You and I started at the same time and I am looking at doing some splits this summer too. Remember swarm season will be here soon too. I made a split off of a swarm frame last year. Will probably end up doing it again this year.

Michael Palmer is an Awesome inspiration for your area and can't wait to see your double nuc boxes in action. Beekeeping is amazing and when you do a split to get a Queen that you made the bees make is Amazing! Love following you on this journey.

  • @khills
    @khills 5 років тому

We actually have nearly 300 native bee species in MA, across five bee families (Adrenidae, Apidae, Colletidae, Halictidae, and Megachilidae)! It's just that the majority of our native bees, both here and in America in general, are solitary bees, so we don't have the same image (or knowledge) of them as honey bees. Small-scale hobby beekeepers like you and many of your commenters help the native bee and other pollinators when you maintain diverse and season-long food sources for your honey bees, so it's really a win all around.

Thanks, Don. I subscribe to Epidemic Sound. It is a licensing web site that allows me to add their music to my youtube videos without extra royalties. The music isn't for sale or download. It's just available for youtube. It is an amazing service. Finding the right music for video has always been very difficult to do for small people like me. No way I can pay for licensing rights for popular music. Epidemic Sound is really great.

From the over all comment authors textdepth i see more intelligent or sensitive people HERE on your channel, than elsewhere.
Also, your brave openness/ readyness to real..life..decision.. branching-recognition and execution, makes me see you as a candidate, who is or will be capable to learn, understand and coexist in relative equilibrium with your environment, which is the meaning of health and life to me.
I had similar Situations and despite the fact that the crowds expect us to produce efficiently before they like to take it serious what we do, mine are healthy and expanding, while i am learning. I harvest knowledge, bees-mass, confidence through constantly wondering about novelty.
@themoment it is turning into queens multiplication(breeding).
Hey you, keep on going, being a learning guy. You never know what comes next, even with a perfect plan it cannot fit the reality.
You will succeed, you do right now, even if you do not exactly know the path or outcome at this moment, you know it since ever. It will become clear.
Good luck, Mario with broken english from germany.

Buckets in the garage. Buckets in the kitchen. The spare bedroom has buckets of honey in it. Laundry room too.
If you're keeping bees sustainably the honey sort or just happens. It does take years to build up the necessary equipment to let the honey "just happen".
