Joe is a treasure. What a great video. It is like having joe messing around with a guitar in your living room for a half hour. Honestly, more than his mastery of setting it up to get his sound, it is just cool watching how he interacts with it.
Knew most of what he said but still learned a thing or two Great little masterclass in setup. Every guitar player should watch this within their first year or two of playing and learning to tune by ear. TUNE BY EAR.
You can tell he is a master of his craft for many years. Just a few simple tools and he has that guitar sounding better than most techs can do. Not something you can pick up in books, just comes from listening and playing for so long that it's a part of him naturally, rock on Joe!
I've seen this video many times over the years. I enjoy watching it because Joe takes great care explaining the tuning process. He show's great patience with his audience in a way. He's just a considerate guy.
Joes right. Best set up video out there. Forget the measuring tools, feeler gauges, etc. It's about how it actually plays, feels and works in the real world of playing!
This guy's a genius with the guitar. I just loved watching him set this guitar up. Not just anyone can make this entertaining. One thing is for sure, when it comes to Joe Walsh, Life's Definitely been Good!!! At least when it comes to the guitar. Professor Joe!!
What a great teacher! I’ve been playing for over 40 yrs and I know how to set up a guitar but some things the way he explained them finally told me why I’m doing it all these yrs.
Second time I've watched this video - great tutorial. I love Joe Walsh - ever since I bought The James Gang Rides Again on vinyl back in the '60s. His joining the Eagles lineup really moved that band forward.
Well, if Joe ever decided to go off stage (God forbid!) he is a gracious and Natural Teacher and would be welcomed in that Arena as well as the Performance Arena.

5:15 The harmonic on the 7th fret of E string (low E is louder) is a B. And the harmonic on the 5th fret of low E string is two octaves up == same pitch as the high E string. I'm sure Joe knows this, but he probably didn't want to stuff the video with every possible side-note.
"Some people might wanna argue, but they don't have a tone as good as I do." Period. Joe Walsh is one of the guys who REALLY knows tone. He could make a broomstick with a wire sound like a 59 Les Paul.
I remember years ago reading an interview of him talking about amps: "Fender put all these parts in to make them sound nice. Well I went in took all those parts out and put others in to make 'em sound NOT nice!" :D

learnt more from joe in 20mins about how to tune a guitar than in my lifetime of over 65 years young and been and seen some great guitar heroes of the era one of the best Stuart Adamson Rip xxx
4:20 So much wisdom. So many people - including professionals - tune down to pitch and then complain their guitar won't stay in tune, Gibsons are trash etc. When a true Master teaches you with such simplicity and common sense, you better listen. Joe Walsh is not only a genius and a great musician, he's also funny and down to earth. Respect.
Because how is this going to help us? Us the people know nothing and if we relied on this our guitars would be bent out of tuning and everything unimaginable
Jonathan Black After 50 years... Joe just knows what looks and sounds right. Also, it probably wasn't far out, he actually probably knocked it out before the vid but that doesn't matter. what matters is this if done a few times can get a guitar "in" in just a few mins. after years I can tune a guitar by ear and am always near spot on. For Sure Joe can almost look at a guitar and it will go inti tune. that just comes from many years and thousands of shows. it seems like every other show something is out. be it a guitar, amp, PA, snake etc. The stuff is great for a week at home or in studio but go live.... It's just crazy. If you know these bits he showed you can save a guitar if you don't have a tech. early on I'd have to pkay gigs on my back up and hope it lasted because suddenly my primary was buzzing, had a switch issue, wouldn't go in... Etc.
Oh wow this is a set up tutorial. Amazing. This rules. Wow. This is literally everything you need to know to setup a guitar. Just wow. From joe friggin Walsh. THX Joe !!!

@@fullstrutn No. The eagles originally had Glen Frey, Don Henley, Randy Meisner, and Bernie Leadon (guitar). The later added Don Felder as a 2nd guitarist. While the Eagles were on tour, Joe Walsh was playing with James Gang and they would hide him in a road case, roll it out on stage, he would pop out for the audience, and would play Rocky Mountain Way with them. When the eagles decided to go more rock and roll as opposed to their original country sound, Bernie Leadon quit and Joe Walsh was hired in as the new guitarist in 1975, 4 years after the eagles had become a band
Joe does a great job of explaining this in layman’s terms. I’m a guitarist, but I’m no gearhead. This helped me a great deal. Joe seems like a great guy
From James Gang to solo material, Joe has been a constant in the rock world for decades. Trustier than your pocket knife, and in perfect pitch, no less.
He might be the best player, at least on the rock-oriented stuff, but it was Henley and Frey who created most of the great songs. The combination of those guys, along with the other rock-solid (so to speak) band members, was extraordinary. Great players and vocalists, great storytellers, great live performers, musically versatile, and brilliant in the studio -- how anyone can diss them with a straight face has always puzzled me.
Stumbled across this having never seen it before and so glad I did. What a brilliant lesson on how to set up your guitar from a guitar legend. Every guitar player from beginner up should watch this as I am sure you’ll learn something from it. The tip about always tuning up is priceless - never heard that before but Joe gives a fantastic explanation why. Many thanks Joe for giving up your time and knowledge.

I have been playing for close to 50 years now. I never knew there was such a vast difference when you tilted the pickups. Will be looking at mine again. Thanks Joe!
Absolutely! Fricken hilarious! And talented. He's done little parts in sitcoms and is great. 1994 ish I was in the house of blues on sunset Blvd on a holiday and didn't even know he was sitting at a couple tables over all night until the main act ""The Band" called him up to do a song at the end of the night.
Such a great basic setup seminar. It was really helpful. He just broke it all down. Here’s what you do. And you know Joe knows what he’s talking about…
Just a tip for sighting the neck before you adjust the truss rod. Hold it in playing position when you sight it. don't hold it flat unless you plan on playing it on your lap. If you hold it flat, the weight of the headstock actually back bows it slightly. Then your adjustment of off when you flip it back to playing position. It probably wouldn't matter with some of the thicker neck profiles, or with the maple neck Paul's, but a thinner mahogany neck will definitely flatten out when held flat. Same thing with techs who tune on a bench, then you pick up the guitar and it is all out of tune. tune it in playing position too...
Yes. I would also make sure strings are at pitch (it affects the neck relief) and it would always tighten clockwise into the truss rod position rather than backing off (maybe that's just me, it seems like more positive contact.) Also it takes time for very small truss rod adjustments to 'settle' so best to leave it several hours or a day between tweaks so that you don't over-adjust and have to go back. Guitars that are stored away a long time with no strings may tend to take an 'upbow' from the lack of string tension needed to counteract the truss rod tension, so just a warning it may be better to store guitars strung at least close to pitch.
Gibson sez capo 1st, hold on 14th, check gap at 9th. Where you hold down and where you check depends on how the guitar is made, where the neck joins body, etc.
Joe is sitting around in a showroom and delivers one of the best guitar set up videos on UA-cam. Priceless. Legend

I like emotive lead players who use unique note selection. Page, Hendrix, Slash, Joe Walsh, Duane Allman, Jack White...Basically NOT Joe Bonamassa or post '68 Clapton. I'm not "right" about any of this, it's just how I feel, what I enjoy and a chance to talk guitar. Have a good one!
Joe is a treasure. What a great video. It is like having joe messing around with a guitar in your living room for a half hour. Honestly, more than his mastery of setting it up to get his sound, it is just cool watching how he interacts with it.
Knew most of what he said but still learned a thing or two
Great little masterclass in setup.
Man is another incredible musical genius
Very humbling when Joe Walsh tuning a guitar sounds better than you playing a guitar
😆I know what you mean man!!😆
👍🏼💯🎶🤠🎸✌🏽
Innit just...
LOL. So true.
🤣🤣🤣
Well, if Joe ever decided to go off stage (God forbid!) he is a gracious and Natural Teacher and would be welcomed in that Arena as well as the Performance Arena.
Thanks Mr.
Walsh for the tutorial. Took my les paul to get set up by a professional and still didn't perform right. Watched this video did it myself and now it plays like a DREAM! Thanks Joe!😊👍🎸🎶
This is the best video I have ever watched. Joe Walsh is a frigging legend!!
Hi i just wanted to thank you again for being so supportive and following me on
my Journey. I love inspiring and encouraging others. People like you help me to keep showing up! Hope you are having an amazing day❤💞
Joe Walsh after playing a Zeppelin riff:
"Forgive me Jimmy"
I never would have known . . . 😂😘
He sold Jimmy his number 1 Les Paul, that was a ribbing from a special old buddy! Priceless!
5:15
The harmonic on the 7th fret of E string (low E is louder) is a B.
And the harmonic on the 5th fret of low E string is two octaves up == same pitch as the high E string.
I'm sure Joe knows this, but he probably didn't want to stuff the video with every possible side-note.
A Maple fretboard Les Paul looks so beautiful! The tuning tip was something i never wouldve thought about
"Some people might wanna argue, but they don't have a tone as good as I do." Period. Joe Walsh is one of the guys who REALLY knows tone. He could make a broomstick with a wire sound like a 59 Les Paul.
Six wires.
cause he used a 50's paul
I remember years ago reading an interview of him talking about amps: "Fender put all these parts in to make them sound nice. Well I went in took all those parts out and put others in to make 'em sound NOT nice!" :D
i know right
just saw joe live 2 months ago, he was amazing.
Freaking AWSOME!!! I've been playin for 50 years and you just blew my mind! THANKS!!!!
Joe Walsh is and has always been the coolest to play Rock n Roll, there is no one in second and the third place holder is a long way back.
Joe is just a certified badass!, a guitar master and technical virtuoso!
For a rookie like me...THAT was some great information! and WHO knows better than Joe?? Really cool to hear that info from a true rock n roll legend...like millions of other folks...I've enjoyed his music for years! I'll be adjusting my guitar soon!
Thanks Joe!! GOD SPEED and ROCK ON!!
I play the guitar and I appreciate his incredible abilities to show people how to tune and setup a guitar and really understand what you’re doing. Love him so very much! ♥️👍🏼

I'm a woman! A guitar player for most of my 60+ years.....Guitars are JUST like women! TRUST ME. They're also a LOT like men....same basic comparison. Love you Joe Walsh.
Good guitars are just like women. Bad guitars are just like men. I have been playing since college and that was 43 years ago.
Sweet Pea
Damn Skippy Sweet Pea! Just like engines!
You got to learn to tune us jusssssttttt right. ❤️👍🏻🤘🏻
Sweet pea SPREAD the love!
Fantastic, and what a compliment to Page at the end. Jimmy, so clever, and Joe smart enough to suss it out.
learnt more from joe in 20mins about how to tune a guitar than in my lifetime of over 65 years young and been and seen some great guitar heroes of the era one of the best Stuart Adamson Rip xxx
“I have pretty good pitch”. Makes me smile every time.
Very clear and with good humour as you'd expect from Joe....
Respect.
How can 795 people dislike a video with Joe Walsh showing us how to set up an electric guitar?
Because how is this going to help us? Us the people know nothing and if we relied on this our guitars would be bent out of tuning and everything unimaginable
He has that cool, drunk, rich uncle vibe. Amazing how he set that rig up without any gauges or rulers. Spectacular
Jonathan Black if you set up your own guitars you don't need gauges or rulers. when it feels right its right.
Etc.
except he isn't drunk. Nope-Joe sobered up years ago, good for him, it gave him his life back.
yup; my hero in Recovery. Calling people "drunk" willy nilly is a mark of THE IGNORANT.
Love Joe Walsh and the Eagles. Favorite Band ever. Thanks for this video Joe !
An episode of, “Mr. Walsh’s Neighborhood”. Keep it coming, Joe. Very informative.
The tuning up trick is such a valuable thing to know
I am not a guitar player; but, it is so fascinating to see what goes into making a guitar sound sweet. I enjoyed this video. Thanks, Joe.
Oh wow this is a set up tutorial. Amazing.
This rules.
Wow. This is literally everything you need to know to setup a guitar. Just wow. From joe friggin Walsh.
THX Joe !!!
One of the coolest dudes ever. All by feel man!
after all these years still use this tip. thats how he tells you not to only play but to know your instrument your thing. whatever you do in life. You have to be tuned up. get it?. work your instrument up and down a while to sound good
I could listen to Joe Walsh play Led Zeppelin for the rest of my life.
Joe Walsh gave Jimmy Page his #2 Les Paul when Page didn't own one. It's Mommy's #1 Les Paul. Joe's known a good playing guitar for a little while...

100% TRUE STORY
@@Head318Hunter are you aware Joe and Duane Allman were born on the same day in the same year? The creator was making slide guitar masters that day I suppose. lol
Travis Smith was it not Jimmy’s #1 that he bought from Joe? The one Joe had refinished but didnt really like? Theres an interview with Jimmy and his #1 on YT and he talks it through, briefly.
Travis Smith was it not Jimmy’s #1 that he bought from Joe? Theres an interview with Jimmy and his #1 on YT and he talks it through, briefly.
I LOVE Joe Walsh. This is so great that he took his time to do this. Great teacher he is and so patient. He still cracks me up. Would love to just hang out with him one day, bet he's loads of fun. Thanks Joe, I can't play guitar but HE CAN and I thoughorly enjoyed this. Learned a lot. 😍
One of the most informative videos on this subject I have seen
Great fan of Joe, saw him on his first tour with the Eagles in UK
Great guitarist
Love Joe Walsh! What an honor for him to teach how to manually tune!
Hi i just wanted to thank you again for being so supportive and following me on
my Journey. I love inspiring and encouraging others. People like you help me to keep showing up! Hope you are having an amazing day❤
I have no clue on how to play a guitar. But, when an expert is teaching, I'm listening anyway. My perspective is as an electronic technician.
I saw Joe do a show with a young band at Konocti a long ass time ago. I went not knowing what to expect.
It was a great show! A small, personal setting with some storytelling. Great guitar tones. An enthusiastic young band. Terrific slide playing. Classic tunes. Definitely a guitar great!
Joe;
Everything worked out great!
I went through your setup, spent an HOUR on it.
And the thing I was scared of was screwing around with the pickups.
You took my fears away.
I can't tell you how happy I am with the results, and it wasn't a big deal!
Thanks for the straight dope!
Mark
Yeah no cut dope from Walshy!!! Bringing the goods!! Watch out you took too much- you took too much tsk tsk
This is truly remarkable. The best thing the Eagles ever did was hire this master guitarist.
Biggest fact I’ve ever heard
uhh Joe founded the Eagles and then left for a while didn't he??
fullstrutn no
I like Joe Walsh, but he’s not even the best guitarist for the eagles.
Joe says " I have pretty good pitch" Understatement of the year lol
From James Gang to solo material, Joe has been a constant in the rock world for decades. Trustier than your pocket knife, and in perfect pitch, no less.
what a great natural teacher is joe walsh...
Man...this video should be viewed by EVERY guitarist that plays a Les Paul. I wish this video had existed when I was a teenager learning to play.
Best member of the Eagles hands down! POW right between eyes
I mean, considering that the eagles kinda suck, that's low bar. I much prefer him in James Gang or his solo work
@@kylejscheffler I agree....the eagles were so.....meh
@@kylejscheffler Eagles....low bar? On what planet?
He might be the best player, at least on the rock-oriented stuff, but it was Henley and Frey who created most of the great songs. The combination of those guys, along with the other rock-solid (so to speak) band members, was extraordinary. Great players and vocalists, great storytellers, great live performers, musically versatile, and brilliant in the studio -- how anyone can diss them with a straight face has always puzzled me.
I always thought Life of Illusion was written/ recorded after the Eagles first split up (80’s) for some reason......
I don't know "beans" about playing a guitar. But I sure got a laugh out of Joe! What a character!!

Played guitar for many years....never knew this!! Thanks, Joe!...and, not to state the obvious, but you rock...
He's out of his mind and a genius at the same time. What a legend !
Best way to describe him.
@@chuckfinley5206 "Genius and madness are frequent companions." -me
He lived dangerously when he was young and it nearly kiloed him. He is lucky he survived, he seems pretty intact too!
I have been playing for close to 50 years now. I never knew there was such a vast difference when you tilted the pickups. Will be looking at mine again. Thanks Joe!
Joe Walsh is hilarious.
Anyone who would entertain us must be full of fun - Joe Has that !!
It isn't true of all .
I laughed all through the video..funny as.
@@twscanada646 Was that The Band, with Robbie Robertson?
Plus has an ear for it. Most people his or my age have lost much of their hearing, but not Joe.
Great stuff. All vital information. Great way to balance the pickup output. Love the "Whole Lotta Love" tip.
Same thing with techs who tune on a bench, then you pick up the guitar and it is all out of tune. tune it in playing position too...
dont sight it ... keep it in playing position ,, fret it at 1 and 22 check with feelers / credit card
No offense but are you seriously trying to give tips to Joe Walsh
